The Pistons opted to add another young player to fold on Wednesday afternoon when they reunited with Kevin Knox, despite the fact they traded him away just a few months ago.</p><p>After struggling to find a role with the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks, Knox signed with the Pistons last year and was a decent shooter for them off the bench, hitting 46.9 percent of his shots from the field and 37.1 percent of his threes. Knox was traded to the Trail Blazers where he played a bit of a bigger role, but after he went through the offseason without finding a new home, he opted to return to Detroit on a <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1722306546896388529" rel="noopener">one-year deal</a>.</p><p>Via Shams Charania:</p><p>“Free agent forward Kevin Knox has agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Pistons, sources tell The Athletic. Knox returns to Detroit, where he played 42 games a season ago.”</p><h2><b>Kevin Knox once again could find himself growing alongside the Pistons</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/pistons-news-ausar-thompson-slaps-detroit-with-reality-check-about-major-shortcoming-after-loss-to-blazers.jpg"></figure><p>After being taken with the ninth overall pick of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Knicks, Knox has struggled to find a role for himself in the NBA to this point. While his per game numbers weren’t explosive with the Pistons last year (5.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 0.4 APG, 46.9 FG%), his shooting splits show that he could be primed for a bigger role if he can continue to shoot the ball effectively.</p><p>Given how he is joining the Pistons a bit late here, Knox will likely have to work on re-integrating himself into the team over the next few weeks. But after being a solid bench piece for them last season, Knox’s return to Detroit should be a welcome sight. Both Kevin Knox and Saddiq Bey had been in the league for a couple of years now and they no doubt took Ivey under their wing and helped get him acclimated to the NBA.</p><p>This season, Knox had been averaging 5.6 points per game and 2.6 rebounds with shooting splits of 46.9 percent and 37.1 percent shooting from the three-point line while playing in 42 games. Bey was averaging 14.8 points and 4.6 rebounds with shooting splits of 40.4 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three-point range. Knox will be on his fourth team in five years while Bey had spent all of his seasons in the league with the Pistons thus far.</p><p>The Pistons still have some solid young pieces, including Ivey who is one of the team’s centerpieces. Unlike some of his 2018 draftmates, the 9th overall pick failed to find any semblance of form with the New York Knicks. It’s gotten to the point where prior to the Cam Reddish <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-new-york-acquiring-cam-reddish-trade-hawks/">trade</a> that brought him to the Hawks, Knox has relegated to the end of the bench.</p><p>Knox’s benching on the Knicks has left his father, Kevin Knox Sr., incredibly confused. Speaking to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/01/14/kevin-knoxs-father-happy-son-will-get-fresh-start/">New York Post</a>, Knox Sr. openly questioned the team’s decision to leave his son on the bench, saying:</p><blockquote>“That’s a great question for [Knicks head coach] Tom Thibodeau. I think we turned the corner. Everybody could see the progression of a young Kevin Knox where he wasn’t really a defensive liability. I think Tom Thibodeau did a great job helping Kevin be a better defensive player. At some point, I think he did become that. He’s always had that stroke and so it become puzzling throughout the organization on why he wasn’t playing Kevin.”</blockquote><p>Early on in his career, Knox was infamous for being a traffic cone on defense. Despite his physical tools, the ex-Knicks forward looked absolutely lost on defense at times. However, as Knox Sr. pointed out, the Kentucky alum has made significant strides with regards to his defense.</p><p>Kevin Knox II will have a chance to revive his career in Atlanta, where he’ll be playing alongside fellow 2018 draftee Trae Young. Now playing in his fourth professional campaign, the 22-year-old is barely seeing action as he was dropped out of the team’s rotation yet again.</p><p>Knox is currently averaging meager numbers of 4.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.4 assists in eight games played this season. As of the moment, it is already clear that he doesn’t fit within Tom Thibodeau’s system and might be better off playing for another team that will be willing to give him opportunities on the floor.</p><p>In fact, the former Kentucky product continues to garner <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-rumors-the-surprising-new-york-player-garnering-trade-interest/">interest</a> from other teams that are interested in trading for his services in the near future. It can’t be denied that Knox still has a promising future in the league, given his young age and untapped potential that can only be maximized by an organization that is willing to trust his capabilities on the floor.</p><p>With that said, here are three squads that could take a gamble and potentially benefit from acquiring Kevin Knox this season:</p><h2><b>Kevin Knox Trades</b></h2><p><b>3. Houston Rockets</b></p><p>Without a doubt, the Houston Rockets’ rebuilding mode is in full swing as their current roster is mostly composed of youngsters. Despite the youth movement, head coach Stephen Silas still has a couple of veterans in his team with the likes of Eric Gordon and Danuel House Jr.</p><p>At their age, it would be better for them to be traded to a team with playoff aspirations like the Knicks in exchange for a young player in Knox. He can potentially find more opportunities in Houston to prove his capabilities and eventually join its young core composed of Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. that might emerge to be a deadly duo in the years to come.</p><p>With a 9-20 record in the Western Conference, the 2021-22 season of the Rockets is not looking pretty but it might just be a good place for Kevin Knox to hone his skills and gain a sizable role moving forward.</p><p><b>2. Orlando Magic</b></p><p>Another rebuilding team in the Orlando Magic has already begun shipping their vets in exchange for young talents who they can further develop for the future. After cleaning house, the team now has a handful of promising pieces in Cole Anthony, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and Wendell Carter Jr., among others.</p><p>Knox could very well fit into the picture if he manages to find himself landing in central Florida soon. So far, the Magic’s wing rotation needs more depth behind Wagner as well as their power forward spot behind Carter and Chuma Okeke. Both of which can be filled by Knox who stands at 6-foot-7 and is versatile enough to play at the 3 and 4 spots.</p><p>Knox’s shooting could also come in handy for Orlando, given that they don’t have that many snipers that can space the floor and serve as deep threats on the court. With a less crowded frontcourt rotation, the forward can potentially earn more minutes and produce valuable contributions for a Magic side that is struggling to get wins this season.</p><p><b>1. Detroit Pistons</b></p><p>Perhaps the most intriguing landing spot for Kevin Knox would be the Detroit Pistons. Head coach Dwane Casey and his men may find themselves settling in the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings when the regular season ends. However, it can’t be denied that this team could potentially end up being special in the years to come, especially with the addition of No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham at the helm.</p><p>Despite the potential, the Pistons still have some pieces that possess a questionable dynamic with the team in the likes of Josh Jackson and Hamidou Diallo who were drafted in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Perhaps trading them to teams that know how to better utilize them can eventually give them a new lease in their careers, similar to the situation of Knox.</p><p>Meanwhile, now playing in his fourth season, the Arizona native can land in Motor City and serve as one of the leaders of this young team. Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti will likely want a first-round pick and a young prospect amid his rookie contract, multiple league officials believe.According to the source, that young player preferably is Knox, the ninth pick in the 2018 NBA Draft coming off a disappointing sophomore campaign.</blockquote><p>While Knox has really struggled in his first two seasons in the NBA, the Knicks reportedly would prefer to keep him and include either Frank Ntilikina or Dennis Smith Jr. in a trade for Paul. A player like Julius Randle may also be involved.</p><p>However, the Thunder already have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in place. They also reportedly aren’t fans of Smith.</p><p>As for Chris Paul, he’s 35 years old and at the tail end of his Hall of Fame career. However, he’s better than any other point guard the Knicks have on their roster at the moment and Leon Rose is desperate to get some star power in The Big Apple.</p><p>For the Thunder in 2019-20, Paul <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/chris-paul/a53c094a/">averaged</a> 17.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game while shooting 48.9 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from beyond the arc and 90.7 percent from the free-throw line. That is production the Knicks would love to get from their starting point guard spot under new head coach Tom Thibodeau.</p><p>Moving forward, though, Paul is owed a ton of money. Even though Knox has certainly struggled at times, perhaps a 140-game sample size isn’t yet enough to make a potentially drastic move.</p><p>The Knicks originally selected Knox with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. As a rookie in 2018-19, Knox appeared in 75 regular season games en route to making 57 starts and averaging 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 28.8 minutes per outing.</p><p>Meanwhile, over the course of 65 regular season appearances and just four starts in 2019-20, Knox averaged a mere 6.4 points across 17.9 minutes. According to <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/04/18/knicks-mailbag-leon-rose-not-sure-if-kevin-knox-is-the-answer/">Marc Berman of the New York Post</a>, newly-appointed Knicks president Leon Rose is unsure if Knox should be a part of the team’s future.</p><p>Overall, Knox has been a bit of a mixed bag since being drafted ninth overall in 2018 out of Kentucky. After showing promise as a rookie, Knox has seen his role shrink dramatically in his second year.</p><p>The 6-foot-7 forward has gone from playing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/kevin-knox/ac2109dd/">28.8 minutes</a> per contest and starting in the majority of the Knicks’ games to playing just 17.9 minutes a game and starting only four of the 65 games he appeared in before the season was postponed.</p><p>And while the Knicks, as a whole, have been a disaster this season, Knox has been particularly bad. The former five-star prospect is putting up just 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game this season. To make matters worse, Knox has been terribly inefficient as well, shooting 35.9 percent from the field and 32.7 percent from deep.</p><blockquote>“Not giving him a runway after the All-Star break was one of the odder things going on in the NBA,’’ one NBA personnel man told Berman. “His motor isn’t high enough yet, but you needed him to play more.’’</blockquote><p>Still, the former top-10 pick is only 20 years old and has plenty of room to grow as a basketball player. The second-year forward covered topics such as his college career, his favorite teammates and even Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.</p><p>Speaking of James, Knox mentioned the four-time MVP as one of his idols growing up and talked about his relationship with the Lakers star and the advice he gave Knox when he entered the league.</p><blockquote>[“LeBron] gave me a couple of tips here and there. It was just a great talk. Anytime you get to talk to a player like LeBron, you just sit there and listen, you don’t really say much, just soak it all in. You really just listen to the advice that he’s giving you,” Knox said.</blockquote><p>After a stellar freshman season at the University of Kentucky, Knox entered the 2018 NBA draft. After being selected No. 8 overall by the Knicks, Knox went on the have a solid rookie campaign putting up 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.</p><p>However, the 20-year-old forward has seen his playing time and efficiency <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-rumors-kevin-knox-considered-soft-not-tough-enough/">dip in year number two</a> as the former Kentucky star is averaging just 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.</p><blockquote>“I think one of the biggest things that he said was, ‘Just stay locked in throughout the whole season.’ There’s going to be ups and downs, social media is going to try to bring you down, there’s going to be times when they hype you up, but he was just telling me to stay levelheaded because there’s times he doesn’t have great games. Since then, his numbers have been in a steep decline. A sophomore campaign filled with expectations has so far been a display of offensive fragility. The short 2019-20 saw him average a disappointing 6.4 points on 35.9 percent accuracy. Even when small forward starter Marcus Morris left, Knox stayed on the bench.</p><p>His recently improved defense has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-hc-david-fizdale-emphaisizing-defense-rebounding-on-kevin-knox/">somewhat satisfied</a> coaches. However, fellow 2018 picks have relatively been more productive on both ends of the court. One NBA college scout noted that Knox wasn’t creative enough on offense, especially compared to fellow Kentucky alum Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.  The former 11th pick has been thriving in Oklahoma City alongside Chris Paul, putting up 19.3 points while sitting on a West playoff spot.</p><p>It is important to note, however, that Knox is still 20 years old and has plenty of room to develop. The Knicks organization is certainly taking into account the young forward’s admirable work ethic and slowly improving defense. But Knicks forward and former Kentucky standout Kevin Knox firmly believes that his former coach won’t leave the school for New York.</p><p>According to Knox, who spent one year in Kentucky, Calipari ‘runs the state’ and it’s unlikely that he’ll trade that post for a job opportunity in the NBA, even more so the struggling Knicks.</p><blockquote>“When Cal says he’s not going to do something, he’s pretty solid he’s not going to do it,” Knox told <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/02/11/john-caliparis-knicks-denial-backed-by-julius-randle-and-kevin-knox/">reporters</a> when asked. “I think he’s came out with multiple reports saying he didn’t want to do it. Cal loves Kentucky. He runs that state, the fans love him there. He’s got the basketball program on lock there, so I don’t think he will leave that opportunity to keep helping kids get to the NBA. That’s something that he really loves to do. I think when he said he wasn’t going to, I think he’s kinda sold on that. He coached the Nets franchise and tallied a 72-112. His college coaching career, meanwhile, boasts of an impressive 768-216 in 28 college seasons which included stints at Massachusetts and Memphis. He entered Tuesday with a 323-76 record in 11 seasons at Kentucky, including the 2012 NCAA championship.</p><p>If we are to believe the Knicks sophomore, then we won’t be seeing Calipari along the Knicks’ sidelines yelling out instructions. Rumors <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-jeff-van-gundy-tom-thibodeau-expected-to-be-on-leon-roses-coaching-list/">reveal that the organization</a> has included Jeff Van Gundy and Tom Thibodeau in the shortlist. Recently, the 20-year-old revealed that he suffered a previously undisclosed knee injury in the summer, which might have had an effect on his rather unimpressive campaign thus far.</p><blockquote>“I got a lot of work in the beginning of the summer,’’ Kevin Knox said, via <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/01/07/kevin-knox-reveals-summer-injury-as-knicks-minutes-dwindle/?utm_source=twitter_sitebuttons&amp;utm_medium=site%20buttons&amp;utm_campaign=site%20buttons">Marc Berman of the New York Post</a>. “It was a little knee injury. The injury stopped me from working out for a month or two, but it didn’t have anything to do with the summer.’’</blockquote><p>To be clear, Knox himself stated that he has fully recovered from the injury, and that this has had no adverse effect on his play this season. Then again, it must have been more than a minor tweak if it cost him a couple of months on the sidelines.</p><p>Right now, Knox is logging just <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/knoxke01.html#all_per_game">19.4 minutes</a> per ballgame, which is significantly lower than his 28.8 minutes played in his rookie year last season. In his rather modest time on the floor, the former ninth overall pick’s production has likewise been limited, with Knox averaging 7.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks, as well as 1.2 3-pointers per contest.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/marcus-morris/b2fb098c/">Marcus Morris</a> has been outstanding for the Knicks all season long, and he has certainly been eating up the minutes at the four spot. But I do think a little bit of tough love on some of these young guys isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”</blockquote><p>Knox got plenty of run last season after he was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, but he has struggled to see the floor as Fizdale continues to spread the minutes this year. The former Kentucky star is averaging just 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds on less than 20 minutes per game and a mere 6.5 shot attempts per contest. Although he is shooting 38 percent from deep, he has been brutal in the mid range.</p><p>The Knicks fell to 4-15 after losing to the Sixers, and they are just a half-game out of last place in the Eastern Conference. This season was not supposed to be another rebuild. However, Jalen Rose thinks that the team has potential superstars in their roster in RJ Barrett and Kevin Knox.</p><p><a href="https://www.sny.tv/nets/news/jalen-rose-nets-kevin-durant-was-really-considering-knicks-in-free-agency-decision-wouldve-been-different-if-not-for-injury/311225324">SNY’s Ian Begley</a> revealed what the analyst and former Knick thinks about the team’s young wing players.</p><blockquote>“I think Knox is slept on, I think he’s going to have a breakthrough season. RJ Barrett, anytime you play alongside Zion (Williamson at Duke), people sleep on the fact that he actually led the team in scoring. So he put in work at Duke and I think both of those guys have potential. I think they’re both versatile.”“You know what I like about both of those guys? And I say this as a member of the media but also as an elder statesman in the league, I always bet on guys that would be successful if they didn’t have basketball. If you look at both of them, they come from good families, they’re well spoken, they’re humble, smart. They’re measured. And they just happen to be talented athletes. To me, those are the characteristics that embody success and they both have it.”</blockquote><p>Knox had a good season for a rookie. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 72 games. Meanwhile, Barrett showed plenty of potential as Williamson’s running mate. He was actually considered the first overall pick in the 2019 rookie class before Zion exploded for the Blue Devils.</p><p>While the Knicks are expected to miss the playoffs again, the future is looking bright for them.
