The injury occurred during the Pelicans’ preseason game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Oct. 5. Quint is my guy,” Looney said. “But it was anybody but me, it seemed like at this point.”</p><p>For Looney, it seemed like all the signs pointed toward his exit from the team. He didn’t want to blame the Warriors rookie. However, it was difficult feeling like the odd man out.</p><p>“They all seemed the same,” Looney added. “I don’t wanna put nobody out there. I have so much to be grateful and appreciative for over the past 10 years,” Looney penned. “This place, it’s truly changed my life forever.</p><p>“In some ways, I feel like I’ve been in the Bay so long that lots of people kinda forget that back when I got drafted by the Warriors, I was barely out of high school. Still just a kid, 19 years old.”</p><p>Looking back, Looney says he was the luckiest kid in the world. He was a teenager joining the Warriors dynasty while playing in an unforgettable environment.</p><p>“And look, Joe, don’t get me wrong. I love Chase Center. It’s great. Beautiful. I loved playing there. First-class everything. Don’t @ me. But Oracle? All those memories? Oakland? Those crowds? That NOISE? Oracle’s undefeated with me, for sure. It’s a shrine,” Looney adds. “Definitely the best arena I ever played in as far as a crowd goes, an energy. Game 2 against Dallas, at home in Chase Center, Looney said. “Third quarter. I’m at the line shooting free throws, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, down the rafters, here it comes…. As that’s happening, no lie, I’m basically like…. I’m confused. I’d heard MVP chants from crowds a ton over the years. For Steph, or Klay, or KD, for a lot of different players.</p><p>“I’ve always had <i>real</i> MVP-type guys on my team. So, I knew what I was hearing immediately. But I didn’t understand why the crowd was yelling it.”</p><p>Looney thought Stephen Curry was entering the game.</p><p>“In my head, I’m like: <i>Is Steph about to check into the game? What’s going on? </i>I definitely didn’t think it was for me. Like, seriously, that’s the kind of thing I dreamed of as a kid,” Looney added. “It couldn’t be for me. But…. <i>It was! </i>And when I realized it? I mean … that was an incredible moment right there. I’d gotten LOOOOOON chants before, which I absolutely loved. But MVP? For me? Come on now. To further their cause, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-new-orleans-signs-3-time-nba-champion-warriors-free-agency">signed three-time champion Kevon Looney</a> to a two-year, $16 million deal in the first day of free agency, bolstering their frontcourt and giving it the rebounding muscle that they sorely needed.</p><p>The signing of Looney allows the Pelicans to bring along their young big men, Yves Missi and Derik Queen, more slowly. And at such a low cost, this shouldn’t prohibit New Orleans from making other moves to improve the roster. This signing, while crowding their frontcourt even further, is also going to bring some much-needed leadership and level-headedness in the team’s locker room.</p><p>All in all, the Pelicans’ decision to sign Looney should help their cause for the 2025-26 season. And this also reunites Looney with a former teammate of his on the Golden State Warriors in Jordan Poole — someone he won a championship with back in 2022. Poole is <a href="https://twitter.com/DaltonJ_Johnson/status/1939840055633428785" rel="noopener">definitely ecstatic</a> that he’ll be teaming up with a familiar, beloved face.</p><p>“Omg!!! Reporters can be subjected to some frustrated demeanor from the coaches they interview, or they are exposed to the hazards of standing close to the hardwood, such as being hit with a basketball. On Tuesday, Kerith Burke of NBC Sports Bay Area found out the hard way just how dangerous the job can be. Thankfully Kevon Looney was by her side.</p><p>Prior to the Warriors’ 104-93 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, Burke was interviewing Looney about what the recipe for success for Golden State will be as they head into a game without Stephen Curry, who was out due to rest. Some Warriors players were shooting the ball near them, and the ball bounced towards Burke, nearly hitting her in the head. There are certainly plenty of Warriors fans who feel the same way after everything the 29-year-old center has done for the team since being drafted 30th overall in 2015.</p><p>It took Looney a bit of time to cement himself as a rotation player, but he’s been part of three championship winning teams, and he played a prominent part on those squads as well. He’s an incredible offensive rebounder who gives it his all every time he’s on the court, and he’s also surprisingly mobile defensively, allowing him to keep up with much quicker players on the perimeter.</p><p>He may not be featuring as much in the Warriors’ rotation anymore, but even head coach Steve Kerr will agree that he’s a lifesaver — always ready to contribute when called upon.</p><h2><b>Warriors answer the call amid Stephen Curry’s rest day</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Warriors-All-Star-Stephen-Curry-1.jpg"><figcaption>D. However, the injury does not appear likely to cost him any time.</p><p>In his heroic 18-point performance against the Thunder, Looney suffered a nasal fracture. However, he will simply apply a face mask and <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1885145042039509048" rel="noopener">play through the fracture</a>, per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater. The Warriors have two days between their games against Oklahoma City and the Phoenix Suns.</p><p>Looney’s 18 points in 25 minutes were a season-high. He added three rebounds, four blocks and two assists while notching a team-high plus-minus of +14. However, he played behind Quinten Post — who made his first career start in the game — instead of Trayce-Jackson Davis, who did not play in the contest. Looney started the second half over Post, who took the court for just eight minutes.</p><p>Powered by Looney’s energy off the bench, the Warriors erased a 14-point deficit to defeat the Thunder 116-109. The thrilling victory bumped them up to 24-23 on the year with eight games remaining until the All-Star break.</p><h2><b>Warriors continue six-game home stand against Suns</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Kevon-Looney_cad112.jpg"><figcaption>Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Now riding a two-game win streak and victors in three of their last four games, the Warriors have seemingly re-discovered their rhythm on their current six-game home stand. Golden State’s back-to-back wins over the Utah Jazz and Thunder give them the most momentum they have had in months ahead of a matchup with the Suns.</p><p>Like the Warriors, the Suns have hit their stride over the last week, playing much better than their record indicates. Phoenix is coming off a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves but is 3-1 in their last four games and 8-1 in their last 11.</p><p>Both the Suns and Warriors are two of the top teams to monitor ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Both teams are involved in the ongoing Jimmy Butler saga, with Golden State likely shopping Jonathan Kuminga and Phoenix potentially moving Bradley Beal. Already battling a slew of injuries in the first part of the season, the Warriors lost Kevon Looney midway through the game <a href="https://x.com/WarriorsPR/status/1882293225404448859" rel="noopener">due to an illness</a>.</p><p>Looney has been playing well for Golden State. The team is 2-0 in his last five appearances where he saw at least 20 minutes of action, and he averaged 7.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.</p><p>Looney’s absence forced head coach Steve Kerr <a href="https://x.com/DannyEmerman/status/1882287471599526165" rel="noopener">to once again make adjustments</a> in the Warriors’ rotation. Trayce Jackson-Davis started the second half over Looney and Quinten Post replaced him halfway through the third, per Danny Emerman of Bay Area News Group. Looney also didn’t come out of the locker room for the second half.</p><h2><b>Kevon Looney should be ready for Warriors’ next game</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Kevon-Looney.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Ahead of a matchup with the Chicago Bulls on Thursday, the Warriors are optimistic that Looney will be available to return to the court.</p><p>Golden State’s rebounding was strong against the Kings, despite missing one of their go-to players in that department. Jackson-Davis pulled down eight boards in 24 minutes, and Post with six in 15 minutes.</p><p>Looney has a chance to make it back for Thursday night’s game, which will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-pinpoints-issue-downfall-kings">help Kerr and the Warriors re-establish their rhythm</a> with the starting group. The 28-year-old center <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/43499015/golden-state-warriors-post-worst-home-loss-steve-kerr-era" rel="noopener">recently addressed</a> the team’s struggles since their previous stretch of NBA dominance, per ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk.</p><p>“Seems like an eternity ago,” Warriors center Kevon Looney said when asked how long ago the 2022 NBA championship feels like. “We have had a lot of iterations of the team since then. Each season brings on a new challenge. That year seems further and further away. But hopefully, we can get back to that feeling of being a champion. But we got a long way to go.”</p><p>The Warriors sit at 21-22, and on the outs of the Western Conference’s top-10 for the moment. Some things never seem to change, like the Warriors winning ways and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-draymond-green-gets-himself-ejected-for-no-reason-vs-grizzlies">Draymond Green collecting technical fouls</a>.</p><p>Unfortunately, it can’t all be good news. Center Kevon Looney is out and <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1858624257993089061" rel="noopener">will not play</a> in Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers, per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.</p><p>“Kevon Looney is out tonight for the Warriors at Clippers. Illness. He wasn’t at shootaround. Steph Curry and Lindy Waters III are still listed as questionable. Both went through shootaround this morning in Los Angeles.”</p><p>Looney provides size and is wide-bodied with a lower center of gravity to match up against opposing big men. In last month’s 112-104 loss to the Clippers, he played 20 minutes and posted 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals. In that game, Ivica Zubac, the Clippers’ starting center, scored 23 points and collected 18 rebounds, six assists, two steals and one block in 38 minutes.</p><h2><b>Warriors rolling to start 2024-25 season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Warriors-Kevon-Looney-boxing-out-Celtics-Luke-Kornet.jpg"><figcaption>© Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>In Brett Siegel’s latest <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-power-rankings-24-25-week-4-rockets-warriors-turn-back-clocks" rel="noopener">NBA Power Rankings</a>, the Warriors held down the No. 2 spot for the second-straight week.</p><p>“There have been a total of six instances in which the Golden State Warriors have started a season 9-3 or better since Steve Kerr became the head coach of the team a decade ago. The Warriors went to the NBA Finals all six times, only losing in 2016 and 2019.</p><p>“This 10-2 start by Golden State is very reminiscent of their start during the 2021-22 season, where everyone overlooked Stephen Curry’s team because their defense was leading the way and setting the tone, unlike their offense of the past.</p><p>Nearly a month into the season, the Warriors’ defense is still very strong, and their 11- or 12-man rotation has yet to really crack or show any deficiencies. For being the league’s smallest team, it’s quite impressive to see this group rank second in total rebounds per game and third in offensive rebound.</p><p>“Effort and intensity are the two best words to describe the Warriors right now.”</p><p>Not only is Steph Curry performing like usual, the Warriors have a burgeoning number of young players coming into their own like Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Buddy Hield has also been lights out coming off the bench, averaging 17.7 points per game.</p><p>Podziemski recently spoke about feeling like home with the Warriors and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-brandin-podziemski-dishes-paul-george-lauri-markkanen-trade-rumors">franchise’s trust in him</a>, via ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.</p><p>“You feel the respect and love from Mike Dunleavy, [owner] Joe Lacob and our front office team of how much they value me after just seeing one year of what I can do,” Podziemski said. “It’s not like you’re just being traded for another role player; it’s All-Stars you’re talking about.
