The former Baylor freshman showed off many of the skills that made him <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-2023-nba-draft-class-taylor-hendricks" rel="noopener">the No. 16 pick</a> in the NBA Draft. In fact, he played so well in Las Vegas that the Jazz’s biggest concern about George’s NBA Summer League performance is that the magic won’t last.</p><h2><b>The Jazz’s biggest concern about Keyonte George after 2023 NBA Summer League is that his performance was a mirage</b></h2><p>Keyonte George had one of the best 2023 NBA Summer League performances in the entire league. His <a href="https://www.nba.com/2023-summer-league-vegas-player-stats?dir=D&amp;sort=PTS" rel="noopener">numbers in Vegas</a> were 24.9 points, 6.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game over the course of three games. He also shot 44.4% from 3-point range, going 12-of-27 from behind the arc and 52.3% from the field.</p><p>Cam Whitmore of the Houston Rockets, the Villanova star who fell from the projected top-10 to No. 20 in the 2023 NBA Draft won the NBA Summer League MVP Award, but he played three more games than George.</p><p>George still made the first-team NBA 2K24 All-Summer League along with Whitmore, Sam Merrill (Cleveland Cavaliers), Orlando Robinson (Miami Heat), and Hunter Tyson (Denver Nuggets). And all those players played at least one (if not two or three) more games than the young Jazz prospect.</p><p>Coming out of Baylor, we all knew the 6-foot-4 guard could shoot and score. But in NBA Summer League, he also ran the point and created shots for his teammate, which makes it seem like he can be a starting-caliber lead guard in the league.</p><p>Now, making first-team All-Summer League is great, but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee success at the next level. In the last three years (minus 2020, when there was no Summer League), the players to make these teams looked like this:<br>2022: Keegan Murray (MVP), Tari Eason, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Cam Thomas<br>2021: Cam Thomas (Co-MVP), Davion Mitchell (Co-MVP), Jalen Johnson, Trey Murphy III, Payton Pritchard, Jalen Smith, Obi Toppin<br>2019: Brandon Clarke (MVP), Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Jarrett Allen, Kendrick Nunn, Mitchell Robinson</p><p>When you look at this list, you’ll see several second-year players, but there are plenty of rookies who have already become solid to good NBA players. That includes Murray, Eason, Mitchell, Murphy, Clarke, Alexander-Walker, Allen, and Nunn.</p><p>However, there is one player who is on the list above twice, and his name (and game) brings up the biggest cause of concern for Keyonte George on the Jazz.</p><p>Cam Thomas is built for NBA Summer League. The 10-day run in Vegas is a glorified pickup game for some of the best basketball players in the world. Thomas is a ball-dominant (hog?) scorer who is going to put up points in any meaningless game he plays in.</p><p>However, when you put him in an NBA game where things like defense and playmaking matter, he’s a below-average player. Last season with the Brooklyn Nets, Thomas averaged 10.6 points, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 turnovers playing just 16.6 minutes per game in 57 games.</p><p>Additionally, when he was on the floor, he has a 27.8% usage rate. And while he didn’t play enough to qualify for the true NBA leaderboard in this category, that number would put him T-28 in the league with Jordan Clarkson and DeMar DeRozan (and ahead of players like Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, Jalen Brunson, two-time MVP Nicola Jokic, Kawhi Leonard, and others).</p><p>Cam Thomas is built for NBA Summer League. Now the Jazz have to hope that Keyonte George is not the same type of player.</p><p>George is a scoring force. He can go to the hoop, shoot from the outside, and has a midrange pull-up game that is rarely seen in the modern NBA. All those skills could be great in the league. However, they could be NBA Summer League skills that won’t translate in the pros.</p><p>This is a possibility and could be a concern for the Jazz. That said, there is so much more that George showed in his game this summer that likely puts him in the Keegan Murray, Davion Mitchell, Kendrick Nunn category than the Thomas camp.</p><p>George was great on the ball and created shots both for himself and others. And his potential as a playmaker is what sets him apart from a pure scorer who can score easier in Summer League than in the real league. Also, his shooting 44.4% from 3-point range gives him potential as a shooting specialist at the beginning of his career if the other areas come around slowly. That’s another thing Thomas doesn’t excel at, shooting 31.9% from deep in his NBA career.</p><p>The Keyonte George Jazz NBA Summer League performance left little concern for the franchise. And unless it was a total mirage, he should be an All-Rookie candidate in 2023.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With thousands of NBA fans, scouts, agents, executives and more heading west, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-summer-league-damian-lillard-pascal-siakam-trade-rumors-reactions" rel="noopener">Summer League</a> has become more than just a spectacle to welcome the stars of tomorrow to the NBA.</p><p>This summer’s showcase presented opportunity to so many youthful talents not only beginning their respective careers but those looking for more opportunity in the league. Several second and third-year players have made a name for themselves at Summer League through the years and now some of these players like Desmond Bane find themselves on max-level contracts heading into the new year.</p><p>Highlighted by first overall pick <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-biggest-concern-victor-wembanyama-2023-nba-summer-league-performance" rel="noopener">Victor Wembanyama</a>, this year’s Summer League was mainly about the incoming rookie class that is full of athletes and high-potential scorers. Brandon Miller and Scoot Henderson were also in action, yet these three top picks were not the standouts from their draft class in Las Vegas.</p><p>Value can be found at any point in the draft and teams begin to learn this based on what they see in Summer League. Regarding the draft, you don’t even need to be selected to make an impact in this league and we have seen this time and time again.</p><p>From first-round picks to second-round picks to players who went undrafted recently, here are the biggest winners coming out of Las Vegas Summer League.</p><h2><b>Keyonte George – Utah Jazz</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Biggest-winners-from-NBA-Summer-League-2023-1.jpg"></figure><p>While he only played in three games due to right ankle sprain, Keyonte George was by far the most spectacular rookie in Summer League this year. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2023-nba-mock-draft-5-0-draft-day-edition" rel="noopener">On Utah’s radar</a> throughout the pre-draft process, the Jazz identified George as a young player that could potentially lead their backcourt one day. He may very well be ready to do so right away during his rookie season after what he showed them in Las Vegas!</p><p>In the three games he played in, George averaged 21.7 points and 6.3 assists per game while shooting 52.3 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from three-point range. This is why the Jazz rookie was named to the 2K24 All-Summer League First Team.</p><p>Whether it was pulling up from deep in rhythm or attacking his opponent all the way to the hoop, George exerted confidence every single time he was on the floor. At just 19 years old, the former Baylor Bear looked like a multi-year veteran who had been to Summer League before.</p><p>After trading away Donovan Mitchell last season and Mike Conley Jr. this past year, the Jazz have left themselves thin in their backcourt. Finding a new, young guard who could play alongside Jordan Clarkson was a must for this team in the offseason, which is one of the reasons why they wanted to select George in this year’s draft. The 16th overall pick had himself some terrific showings in Summer League and his averages would be much higher if he didn’t get hurt ten minutes into his third game.</p><p>The Jazz have a very bright future ahead of them and their rookie guard may very well be in the running for more than All-Rookie honors this season. Keep an eye on George regarding the upcoming Rookie of the Year race.</p><h2><b>Cam Whitmore – Houston Rockets</b></h2><p>Once thought to be a Top-10 pick, possibly a Top-5 pick in this year’s draft, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-draft-2023-takeaways-recap-winners-losers-steals-victor-wembanyama" rel="noopener">Cam Whitmore slid</a> all the way out of the lottery and was taken with the 20th overall pick by the Houston Rockets. Similar to the Jazz with George, the Rockets were eyeing Whitmore during the pre-draft process and they believed that getting him as late as they did in the first-round was a steal.</p><p>Well, Whitmore certainly looked like the steal of this year’s draft at Summer League, as he was one of the top rookie performers and was recently named the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-cam-whitmore-summer-league-mvp-awards" rel="noopener">2023 Summer League MV</a>P.</p><p>Although you never want to see injuries, Amen Thompson going down with a leg injury ultimately proved very beneficial for Whitmore, as he became Houston’s top option with Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason being shut down as well after just two games. From scoring to defending to rebounding, Whitmore has done it all for the Rockets in Las Vegas and he has led them to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-cavaliers-summer-league-final-prediction-pick-how-watch" rel="noopener">Summer League championship game</a>, which will be played on Monday night.</p><p>Through five games, Whitmore has averaged 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 46.5 percent from the floor. He may only be shooting 29.3 percent from deep, but Whitmore’s defensive instincts have stood out and he set a Summer League record with eight total steals in one game.</p><p>How he will fit into the Rockets’ rotations this upcoming season is unknown, but Whitmore certainly proved that he can play and make an impact out on the wing.</p><h2><b>Orlando Robinson – Miami Heat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Biggest-winners-from-NBA-Summer-League-2023-2.jpg"></figure><p>Going undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, Orlando Robinson ended up signing a contract with the Miami Heat. Originally joining the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat’s G League affiliates, Robinson was waived and then re-joined the organization on a two-way contract. After being waived a second time, Robinson again re-joined the Heat on a two-way contract about a month later and spent the rest of the season with both Sioux Falls and Miami.</p><p>This offseason, the Heat signed the undrafted center to a standard contract and he was arguably the most outstanding player in Las Vegas. Robinson showcased his all-around game while leading the Heat to a 3-1 record in the games that he played in and he scored below 20 points just once.</p><p>His best game was came in Miami’s first of Summer League against the Boston Celtics, as Robinson recorded 36 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. In total, Robinson averaged 25.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 57.8 percent from the floor and 35.3 percent from three-point range.</p><p>The Heat just seem to have a knack for finding potential in undrafted talents and Robinson seems to be next up to break into Erik Spoelstra’s rotations with Miami. Behind Bam Adebayo, the Heat do not have much depth, which is why Robinson’s Summer League performances were special.</p><h2><b>Jaden Springer – Philadelphia 76ers</b></h2><p>At this point, there are a lot of unknowns surrounding <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-sixers-unreasonable-asking-price-james-harden-revealed" rel="noopener">James Harden</a> and whether or not he will be traded. The Philadelphia 76ers will be entering the 2023-24 season with high championship aspirations once again, regardless if Harden is on their roster, yet they have some holes to fill in their backcourt.</p><p>Ever since they drafted him in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft, Jaden Springer has been a prospect the Sixers have spent a lot of time fine tuning in the G League. Possessing a ton of two-way potential as a combo guard, Springer has a chance to really take a step forward into Philadelphia’s rotations this upcoming season, especially since Nick Nurse is now their defensive-minded head coach.</p><p>Leading the G League in steals this past season and named the 2023 G League Finals MVP after winning a title with the Delaware Blue Coats, Springer continued to find success in Summer League. In three games out in Las Vegas, Springer averaged 22.3 points, 3.7 rebound and 2.7 steals per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor.</p><p>He still needs to work on his perimeter game offensively, but Springer has proven to be a real impact defender and his length stands out at either guard position. The Sixers’ bench has been weak for quite some time and they will need someone to step up if they are to finally end the curse that has held them out of the Eastern Conference Finals over the years.</p><p>Springer had some terrific showings in the G League and he was one of the standout performers in Las Vegas over the last two weeks. If the 76ers are looking for new production in their backcourt, they should look no further than their 2021 first-round pick, as he is finally ready to make an impact at the NBA level.</p><h2><b>Hunter Tyson – Denver Nuggets</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Biggest-winners-from-NBA-Summer-League-2023-3.jpg"></figure><p>The Denver Nuggets have always been a organization that prides themselves on their draft evaluations and finding diamonds in the rough that everyone else overlooks. Things turned out pretty good with Nikola Jokic, a second-round pick in 2014, and now Denver is looking to find value in yet another second-round pick.</p><p>Obviously he won’t be anything like Jokic, but the Nuggets may have found one of the steals of this year’s draft in the second round with Hunter Tyson out of Clemson. A late riser during the pre-draft process, Tyson raised eyebrows with his play at the NBA Combine and his offensive game on the perimeter is what made him a threat entering Summer League.</p><p>Tyson stood out in all five games he played in for Denver in Las Vegas, averaging 20.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor and 18-36 from three-point range, exactly 50.0 percent. He earned 2K24 All-Summer League First Team honors as a result.</p><p>Three-point shooting was one of the main reasons why the Nuggets won their first title in team history this past season and in order to find more success moving forward, they will need impactful bench talents on the perimeter. Tyson proved that he could hold his own in Summer League and heading into his rookie season, the Nuggets can now be confident in his abilities when his number is called.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Victor Wembanyama was the headliner everyone flocked to see during the first weekend of Summer League. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-doubles-down-ugly-summer-league-debut" rel="noopener">After a shaky first game</a> with the San Antonio Spurs, the French phenom came back and proved why he is the next best thing in the league <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-summer-league-4-victor-wembanyama-reactions-vegas-second-game" rel="noopener">with his second performance</a>.</p><p>After two games, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-san-antonio-makes-massive-victor-wembanyama-summer-league-move" rel="noopener">Spurs decided to shut Wembanyama down</a> for the remainder of Summer League, which has cast the focus on others. Plenty of players have been making a name for themselves at this summer’s showcase, including both rookies and more experience players. In previous years, we have seen numerous second-year and third-year players make a sizable jump in their careers, and this has once again been the case at this year’s event.</p><p>Tyrese Maxey and Desmond Bane both played in Summer League after their rookie seasons, directly resulting in their roles with the Philadelphia 76ers and Memphis Grizzlies increasing, respectively.</p><p>Of course, everything we see on the basketball court in Paradise should be taken with a grain of salt, just like the feeling of hitting Blackjack when you are already down a few hands. Sure, it feels good, but there is still work to do.</p><p>That is the case with many of the standout talents at this year’s Summer League, as the few games they are playing in Vegas are just the start of a long journey ahead with the 2023-24 NBA season months away.</p><p>Five days of Las Vegas Summer League have come and gone, making quite a few players the biggest winners so far.</p><h2><b>Keyonte George – Utah Jazz</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-2023-nba-draft-grades-every-pick" rel="noopener">With three first-round picks</a> in the 2023 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz had a ton of options. Many anticipated them moving on from at least one of these picks, but they kept them all and focused on three areas of need. Taylor Hendricks was their first selection with the ninth overall pick, but it has been their 16th overall selection in Keyonte George who has completely dominated headlines through the first handful of days at Summer League.</p><p>George was a player on Utah’s radar leading up to the draft. Well, the Jazz may have their next best thing after trading Donovan Mitchell last offseason, as George has been nothing short of spectacular through his first two games.</p><p>In his first game, the former Baylor Bear recorded 33 points on 12-24 shooting and 10 assists. Six of his 12 made shots in this game came from three-point range. He then followed up this 33-point performance with 26 points on 9-15 shooting in his second game, also recording seven assists and two steals. Of these nine made shots, five of them came from beyond the arc.</p><p>Utah’s rookie has gone 11-25 from three-point range through two Summer League games in Las Vegas and has recorded a total of 17 assists while only turning the ball over six times. The only thing holding the Jazz back this season was their lack of production outside of Lauri Markkanen and Jordan Clarkson. This void may very well be filled by George from his very first regular season game in Salt Lake City. The Jazz got a steal with the 16th overall pick this year.</p><h2><b>The Houston Rockets</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/rockets-news-jabari-smith-jrs-strong-take-on-why-hes-playing-in-nba-summer-league-will-fire-up-houston-fans.jpg"></figure><p>Everything about the Houston Rockets has stood out to me during my time at Summer League. One of the worst teams in the league the last couple of seasons after trading former league MVP James Harden, the Rockets have been searching for answers on how to build a sustainable, versatile young core to usher in a new era.</p><p>In Summer League, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason really stepped up to prove their value. Both heading into their second seasons in the league, Smith and Eason have a chance to fill two different needs this organization has: secondary scoring and impact at the forward positions.</p><p>Starting with Smith, he proved he was too good for these games by recording 71 total points and 14 total rebounds in two days of action. Aside from hitting a game-winning three with less than a second left to take down Scoot Henderson’s Portland Trail Blazers, Smith just looks much more comfortable than he was to end the 2022-23 season with Houston. Not to mention, his voice in terms of leadership is louder and he physically looks stronger.</p><p>Not only was Smith <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-houston-makes-jabari-smith-jr-tari-eason-summer-league-decisions" rel="noopener">shut down after just two games</a>, but the Rockets did the same with Eason after he nearly recorded back-to-back double-doubles. Eason was all over the place in the two games he played in for Houston. He also looked a lot more comfortable playing out on the perimeter and shooting the ball. A threat to attack the basket on any given possession, as well as being able to crash the glass hard, Eason has a chance to be a very special do-it-all kind of player moving forward in Houston.</p><p>The Rockets had one of the best offseasons out of any team in the league and they continue to find success in Summer League.</p><h2><b>Leonard Miller – Minnesota Timberwolves</b></h2><p>Through the years, the Minnesota Timberwolves have looked to bring in versatile, lengthy forwards who can make an impact either on the wing or in the paint. Jaden McDaniels has turned into a high-impact player for them, and now Leonard Miller is already beginning to look like one of the steals of this year’s draft with his recent play.</p><p>Making seven shots in each of his first two games, Miller has scored a total of 36 points while shooting 4-8 from three-point range. Miller is long, he can guard multiple positions and perhaps the biggest thing that stands out about his play is how physical he is. Whether it is on offense or defense, the rookie is always looking to crash the glass and has found a lot of success doing so in Summer League.</p><p>Maybe he will not make that big of an impact early on in his rookie season, but there are minutes to be had in Minnesota. If he continues to grow his understanding for their system, it will be hard for head coach Chris Finch to keep Miller off the court. This kid has a chance to be a special player in Minnesota and will put on a show if given the opportunity.</p><h2><b>Max Christie – Los Angeles Lakers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/NBA-Summer-League-Standouts-Keyonte-George-steals-show-1.jpg"></figure><p>The Los Angeles Lakers and GM Rob Pelinka have made it very clear that they intend on winning and competing for a championship right now. Capitalizing on LeBron James’ last few seasons is all that matters, which is why they have been aggressive in terms of retaining and adding talent in free agency.</p><p>Outside of LeBron and Anthony Davis, minutes across the board are up for grabs in Los Angeles. Second-year guard Max Christie is definitely a candidate to see his role expand. The Lakers were very happy with Christie’s development during his rookie year, as he jumped back and forth between the NBA team and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.</p><p>Being a sponge most of his time in the NBA and soaking in the wealth of knowledge bestowed upon him, Christie has shown up to Summer League looking stronger, especially from a mental side of things. He has a high understanding for the game and has had no problem becoming the leader of the Lakers’ summer squad.</p><p>Christie’s shooting stroke looks smooth, he’s orchestrating his team’s offense and, surprisingly, the 2022 second-round pick has made a jump on the defensive end of the floor, blocking a total of six shots through two games. If Christie can brings this type of intensity every single night, he could become the next fan-favorite behind Austin Reaves.</p><h2>Orlando Robinson – Miami Heat</h2><p>No player had a better first game in Summer League this year than Orlando Robinson, as the Miami Heat big man exploded for 36 points on 13-22 shooting, as well as 11 rebounds and two blocks against the Boston Celtics. He came back down to earth a little bit in his second game, but he still managed to record 15 points and nine rebounds.</p><p>For years, the Heat have had a problem in their frontcourt given their lack of depth and size behind Bam Adebayo. Dewayne Dedmon, Cody Zeller, Omer Yurtseven and Precious Achiuwa have seen time at the center position, yet nobody has been able to make that big of an impact.</p><p>Could Orlando Robinson finally be the answer for the Heat behind Adebayo?</p><p>Robinson has made a very strong case for himself in Las Vegas. He recently signed a new two-year deal to remain with the Heat, and he would not have signed this deal if his role wasn’t going to expand. We know the success Erik Spoelstra has found with undrafted guys through the years, so perhaps he will be the next undrafted gem to success in Miami.</p><h2><b>Jaden Hardy – Dallas Mavericks</b></h2><p>If there is one thing the Dallas Mavericks lacked a season ago, it was secondary scoring alongside stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. They had some players step up over the course of the season, but nobody could ever provide secondary scoring on a consistent basis.</p><p>Jaden Hardy is a gifted scorer who always seems to know what to do with the ball in his hands. In Summer League, Hardy has been one of the best overall offensive players. Hardy is bringing the ball up the floor in rhythm and recorded back-to-back games with 24 points. While he still needs to improve as a perimeter shooting threat, there is no denying that Hardy has what it takes to become a starting shooting guard in this league.</p><p>One of those second-year players who could be prepared to take a massive leap forward, Hardy is definitely a player to keep an eye on in Dallas.</p><h2><b>Lester Quinones – Golden State Warriors</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/NBA-Summer-League-Standouts-Keyonte-George-steals-show-2.jpg"></figure><p>After a disappointing end to their season in the Western Conference Semifinals, the Golden State Warriors underwent some drastic changes. Mike Dunleavy Jr. is now the general manager of the team after longtime executive Bob Myers stepped down. In his first big act leading the front office, Dunleavy traded Jordan Poole and other assets to the Washington Wizards for future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul.</p><p>Along with Poole’s departure, 2022 second-round pick Ryan Rollins went to the Wizards while the Warriors also lost Donte DiVincenzo to the New York Knicks. There are minutes to be had on the bench in the backcourt, and Lester Quinones may be ready to step into a bigger role with this franchise after spending part of last season on a two-way contract in Golden State.</p><p>Quinones just has an understanding for how to score on the offensive end of the floor that you cannot teach, similar to how Poole was able to break down defenses for the Warriors. Now, Quinones is not as gifted of a scorer or athlete as Poole, but he’s a proven three-point shooting threat who does not hesitate with the ball in his hands. He also takes care of the basketball and makes good decisions, which is definitely the type of backup guard the Warriors need.</p><p>Scoring 15 points in his first Summer League game, followed by 26 points on 4-10 shooting from three-point range in his second game, Quinones has shown that he has improved over the last year. Golden State is always looking for confident shooters and players who do not overthink things on the offensive end of the floor. This describes Quinones’ game perfectly, which is why he may very well earn himself a roster spot with the Warriors this upcoming season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
