Fans made sure the team hears it, too. Two games into the 2025-26 season, the energy inside American Airlines Center has shifted from hopeful to hostile. Even a future Hall of Famer like Klay Thompson faces the full weight of the criticism. After another disheartening loss, the sharpshooter confronted the team’s struggles and the fan reaction head-on with refreshing honesty.</p><p>The Mavericks stumbled out of the gate in the 2025-26 NBA season. They have dropped to 0-2 after two rough home outings. Their revamped lineup featuring Cooper Flagg and Anthony Davis still hasn’t clicked. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-burned-film-loss-spurs">Dallas opened the season by losing</a> 125-92 to Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. They then blew a 14-point first-half lead before falling 117-107 to the Washington Wizards. Injuries to Daniel Gafford and Kyrie Irving have slowed the team’s offense. They have looked flat and inconsistent. As they prepare for their next game against the Toronto Raptors, the Mavericks must find a way to deliver their first win.</p><p>After the Wizards loss, fans voiced their anger. <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46716877/mavs-drop-0-2-fire-nico-chants-grow-louder-dallas" rel="noopener">They chanted, “Fire Nico”</a> toward general manager Nico Harrison. Thompson, who scored eight points on 2-of-7 shooting, addressed the criticism candidly, via Tim MacMahon of ESPN.</p><p>“You got to give ’em something to cheer for,” he said. “I got to give ’em something to cheer for. It’s the nature of the game, man. I’ve been there. I was a fan for 20 years before I got in the NBA. I would’ve definitely criticized players. We deserve a lot of criticism. We’re the ones out there making it happen.”</p><p>Yes, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-cooper-flagg-fire-nico-chants-aac">Flagg and others ignored the fan noise</a>. That said, Thompson confronted it directly and spoke with accountability. He refused to deflect or downplay the anger.</p><p>“There’s always this urgency,” Thompson said. “It’s embarrassing, especially for myself [after] talking championship preseason. But there’s only one way out—stick together, get better, and work harder every day.”</p><p>Thompson’s transparency can hopefully breathe life into a franchise still searching for direction. His words should challenge his teammates and front office to respond with the same honesty and intensity. The Mavericks have floundered early. However, if they harness Thompson’s resolve, they can turn frustration into fire. He averaged 14.0 points and 3.4 rebounds as well. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to showcase any of this with Dallas missing the playoffs, but he did bring his best in the Play-In Tournament.</p><p>In the Mavs’ 120-106 win over the Kings, Thompson scored 23 points on a scorching 8-for-11 from the field. He nailed five threes and silenced the Sacramento crowd on the road. Then, when the team took on the Memphis Grizzlies for the eighth seed, Thompson dropped 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The Mavericks will have two games in Los Angeles against the Lakers (and two at home in Dallas) during the 2025-26 regular season. Perhaps she will appear at those as well.</p><p>Megan Thee Stallion and Thompson made their relationship official over the summer. Thompson was spotted in the back of one of her Instagram posts, and they would later make things official.</p><p>Previously, Megan Thee Stallion was in a relationship with another NBA star, Torrey Craig. Now, she is going steady with Thompson, who is going into his 13th season in the NBA.</p><p>Thompson began his career with the Golden State Warriors. He played the first 11 years of his career with the Warriors, winning four NBA Championships and making five NBA All-Star teams.</p><p>He signed with the Mavericks ahead of the 2024-25 season. Following one of the practice days, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd revealed an intriguing lineup experiment — one that surely caught Klay Thompson’s attention. It’s worth noting that a lineup experiment in training camp does not guarantee anything, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-reveals-potential-cooper-flagg-plan">Kidd has previously mentioned</a> being open to flexibility when it comes to Cooper Flagg’s position on the floor.</p><p>“We had the big group out there,” Kidd <a href="https://x.com/NationMffl/status/1974305949138759744" rel="noopener">told reporters</a> at training camp, quote via MFFL NATION on X, formerly Twitter. “Ryan (Nembhard) running the point with Cooper, D-Live (Dereck Lively II), AD (Anthony Davis) and PJ (Washington).”</p><p>Nembhard, a two-way player, joined the “big lineup” during the training camp practice. If this look ever became more than a strategy for specific scenarios and turned into a starting lineup, however, D’Angelo Russell (until Kyrie Irving returns from ACL surgery recovery) would likely join Davis, Flagg, Washington and Lively.</p><p>So, what does that mean for Klay Thompson? Russell, Thompson, Flagg, Washington and Lively could end up starting. The center competition will be worth keeping an eye on, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-daniel-gafford-miss-weeks-concerning-injury">Daniel Gafford is currently dealing with an injury</a>. The Mavs could even turn to a Russell, Thompson, Flagg, Washington and Davis starting lineup.</p><p>In other words, Dallas certainly has options. Kidd told reporters at Media Day that there is no set lineup yet. Thompson is seemingly not guaranteed to start. With that being said, there is certainly still a chance that Mavs fans will see Thompson on the floor to kick things off on opening night.</p><p>Either way, the Mavericks will need Klay Thompson’s shooting this season. It is no secret that Dallas has turned to a defensive-focused roster. The team’s defense could be great — and players such as AD, Flagg and Irving (again, once Kyrie returns) will lead the offense — but the team’s three-point shooting may be questionable.</p><p>If Thompson can shoot the ball up to his standards, then Dallas’ offense will receive a pivotal boost regardless of whether or not he starts.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The first overall pick will be eager to prove that he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-cooper-flagg-opens-up-funny-moment-bronny-james-matchup">belongs in the NBA and make an immediate impact for the Mavericks</a>, who are entering their first full run in the post-Luka Doncic era.</p><p>On Tuesday, the Mavericks opened their training camp, and Flagg was ready to be a sponge and soak up everything he could to help him prepare for the upcoming season.</p><p>His efforts didn’t go unnoticed among his teammates, particularly Klay Thompson, who <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeACurtis2/status/1973165752913109437" rel="noopener">gave a glowing review</a> of the 18-year-old forward’s first practice.</p><p>“Cooper did great. And that’s what I do,” he continued.</p><p>Thompson is heading into his second year with the Mavericks and his 13th overall in the NBA. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 2011 NBA Draft, and he won four NBA Championships with them. Additionally, he was a five-time NBA All-Star and All-NBA Third Team twice with the Warriors.</p><p>His first season with the Mavericks was disappointing. Thompson averaged just 14 points per game, the lowest since his rookie season. When asked about goals for the upcoming season, Thompson revealed one specific feat he would like to accomplish in addition to bringing home his fifth NBA championship. The Mavs star is <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1972713590655189301" rel="noopener">hoping to join</a> the exclusive 50/40/90 club.</p><p>Only nine players have ever accomplished the feat in the NBA — Larry Bird, Mark Price, Reggie Miller, Steve Nash, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Malcom Brogdon and Kyrie Irving. Irving, who of course plays alongside Thompson in Dallas, may be able to give him some advice for achieving the goal.</p><h2><b>Will Klay Thompson join 50/40/90 club?</b></h2><p>Klay has shot 40 percent from beyond the arc or better in all but three seasons of his NBA career. He has shot 90 percent or better from the free throw line in three separate years. However, he has yet to shoot 50 percent or better from the field, with his career-high being 48.8 percent — something he accomplished in 2017-18.</p><p>Thompson had a respectable 2024-25 season — his first campaign in Dallas. However, he shot a career-low 41.2 percent from the field. His 39.1 three-point shooting percentage was the third worst mark of his career. Thompson did record the second best free throw percentage of his career, shooting 90.5 percent from the line.</p><p>Joining the 50/40/90 club will be difficult for Thompson at this point in his career. While he has steadily improved his free throw shooting, Thompson’s efficiency from the floor has dropped. When Thompson is determined to accomplish something, though, doubting him is a risky thing to do.</p><p>Klay Thompson is going to do everything he can to bounce back and find more consistency with his shot from the floor.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dirk-nowitzki-dishes-truth-on-dallas-2025-26-outlook">Mavs are expected to bounce back</a> following a 2024-25 campaign that saw them get eliminated in the NBA Play-In Tournament. At the moment, Dallas is preparing for the upcoming season as the offseason moves forward. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson are <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/monday-best-the-latest-nba-personnel?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=173664251&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">leading the way</a> when it comes to offseason “bonding.”</p><p>The Mavs held a “bonding camp” earlier this month, Stein reports. Thompson was reportedly “urging” for this event to take place. Stein also reports that Davis hosted a dinner for his teammates.</p><p>Chemistry plays a pivotal role in team success. It’s easy to place all of the focus on statistics, but what happens behind the scenes often leads to those stats. Davis and Thompson stepping into leadership roles is important.</p><p>The Mavericks’ franchise was shaken in February of 2025 following the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-mavericks-luka-doncic-anthony-davis-trade">shocking Luka Doncic trade</a>. Davis, of course, was traded to the Mavs as part of the deal. He is seemingly taking steps forward to assume a leadership role with his new team.</p><p>Kyrie Irving is another leader on the roster. However, he won’t be able to lead from an on-court standpoint until later in the season, as Irving is not expected to return until early 2026 while recovering from ACL surgery. The Mavericks will need Davis and Thompson to lead the way to begin the season.</p><p>According to Stein’s reporting, it seems as if both future Hall of Famers are already accepting the role during the NBA offseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After his opponent narrowly missed an opportunity, Klay proceeded to sink back-to-back shots en route to a victory. Following a brief postgame celebration, Thompson could be heard yelling, “who next!”</p><p>After the game, Klay Thompson — who was wearing a Tennessee Titans jersey — even took time for a brief interview.</p><p>“Titans might have lost today, but I’m winning in life because I’m 1-1 on the billiards table,” Thompson said. “I ain’t leaving here with… an L. I’m going home with a W.”</p><p>In addition to basketball — and now playing pool — Thompson is known for his love of the ocean and sailing. He is often referred to as “Captain Klay” because of his love for being on the water. When the Mavs played the Warriors in Thompson’s initial return to San Francisco this past season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/mavericks-news-klay-thompson-reacts-warriors-captain-hat-tribute">Warriors gave fans captain hats</a> as a way to honor Thompson.</p><p>Thompson is hoping to help the Mavericks return to the NBA playoffs during the 2025-26 season. In his first season in Dallas last year, the Mavs reached the NBA Play-In Tournament but were unable to book their ticket to the playoffs.
