Thompson is no longer the player he once was during his heyday, but he still remains one of the most high-volume three-point marksmen in the entire association. Thus, replacing Derrick Jones Jr. with Thompson means that Doncic and Irving will have even more space to work with.</p><p>However, there’s no reason for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-klay-thompson-message-doubters-preseason-debut">Mavericks to risk the health</a> of either Doncic or Irving after the grueling playoff run they had, so it makes sense that they had to sit out their preseason contest against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. But this meant that Thompson had to take on the role of the first offensive option — something he’s not particularly equipped to handle at this stage of his career.</p><p>Thompson promptly went on to put up a goose egg during the Mavericks’ 110-96 preseason defeat to the Clippers. But his long track record of solid outside marksmanship should ease some of the Mavericks’ fans worries surrounding Thompson.</p><p>As the Mavs Film Room account on X (formerly known as Twitter) pointed out, Thompson, in his final 25 regular-season games for the Warriors, <a href="https://x.com/MavsFilmRoom/status/1846204527600410993" rel="noopener">shot 41.6 percent</a> from deep on 9.7 attempts per game. Thompson still requires plenty of defensive attention along the perimeter, and the Mavericks know that he’ll be playing a much more comfortable off-ball role when Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are back.</p><p>Moreover, a Warriors fan on Reddit reminded the Mavericks faithful that Thompson is a <a href="https://twitter.com/trixi705/status/1846121981978050598" rel="noopener">notoriously slow starter</a>. This, perhaps, is even truer now that Thompson is older and worse as a player. Klay Thompson is dealing with back tightness, while PJ Washington is battling hip tightness.</p><p>“He did the walk-through, did some stuff on the floor,” Kidd said of Thompson. “Then he got his treatment, so we will see how he feels tomorrow.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-klay-thompson-playing-dallas-jazz">Thompson made his Mavs debut</a> on Thursday and played well for the most part. The Mavs are hoping Thompson’s injury concern is not anything serious. They will monitor the situation before making a decision on his official availability for Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.</p><p>Washington has yet to play in a preseason game. Thompson’s first point came via a free-throw while he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/klay-thompson-buries-first-nba-basket-after-warriors-split">connected on a three-pointer for his first made basket</a>. He only played in the first half as the Mavs ease him back into action, as Thomas finished the game with 10 points on 3-9 shooting from the field and 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. He added three assists.</p><p>One element of Thompson’s game that has been questioned over the past couple years is his defense. Thompson <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1844576490186306025" rel="noopener">believes he can still defend at a respectable level</a> and he wants to prove his doubters wrong.</p><p>“Well, it’s really nice when you have great offensive players like Luka (Doncic) and Kai (Kyrie Irving), you don’t feel like you have to shoulder the load as much on that side of the ball,” Thompson said. “I can kind of get back to guarding like I have in the past. I still want to, you know, get rid of that notion that I’m not the same defender as I once was. I truly believe I am. I’m excited to prove people wrong that I can still guard the elite players in this league.</p><p>“I thought it (Thursday’s game) was a good step in the right direction for me. Just challenging the ball-handler and switching onto whoever. I take great pride in guarding. I’m excited to do whatever it takes to help this team.”</p><p>He played well for the most part in his Mavs preseason debut. Thompson admitted he was nervous for the game given all of the hype surrounding his move to Dallas.</p><p>“I was nervous for like, four days,” Thompson said. “I haven’t been that nervous I don’t think since the 2015 Finals Game 1.”</p><h2><b>Jason Kidd addresses Klay Thompson’s first Mavericks game</b></h2><p>The Mavs were defeated by the Utah Jazz 107-102. Dallas is now 0-2 in the preseason. Nevertheless, Mavs fans were happy to see Thompson make his Mavs preseason debut. Of course, his regular season debut when the games start counting will not come until October 24, but Mavericks fans still wanted to see him in action.</p><p>Mavs head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1844568590952907180" rel="noopener">shared his thoughts</a> on Thompson’s play.</p><p>“It was good,” Kidd said of Thompson’s Mavs preseason debut. “He had some great looks. I thought he did a great job in the 18 minutes that he played. I thought he had some great looks and he got going there behind the arc.”</p><p>The pick-and-pop was a trend throughout the game for Thompson. He set a number of screens and proceeded to end up behind the three-point line. So will that be a strategy moving forward for the Mavs?</p><p>“I think it’s just the guys getting used to playing with Klay… Just understanding that’s something he’s done his whole career,” Kidd said. “For his movement, I thought his movement was a positive. While Klay Thompson sat out the Mavericks first preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies, he made his first appearance in Dallas jersey against the Utah Jazz in their second preseason game.</p><p>Thompson <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1844539541106889105" rel="noopener">got his first bucket</a> as a Maverick early in the second quarter with the Mavs trailing, 24-18. He came off an off-ball screen from Daniel Gafford, took a pass from Spencer Dinwiddie, and promptly buried a three-point shot. As of halftime, Thompson had ten points and three assists while shooting 3-of-5 from three-point range.</p><p>That’s something Mavericks fans are going to get used to this season, Thompson coming off screens using off ball movement and freeing himself up for three-point shots. That was a staple of the Golden State Warriors offense.</p><p>Thompson joined the Mavericks this offseason via a sign and trade deal involving the Warriors, Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets. Prior to that, he had spent his entire career with the Warriors.</p><p>The four-time NBA champion was unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension with the Warriors. Throughout the 2023-24 season, it just seemed like a split in the offseason was inevitable.</p><p>The No. 11 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Thompson had developed into a crucial piece of four championship teams. Alongside Stephen Curry, the duo was nicknamed the “Splash Brothers” due to their uncanny ability to get hot from three-point range.</p><p>Thompson made five consecutive All-Star appearances with Golden State before his run was cut short due to back to back major injuries that forced him to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.</p><p>He’s made a remarkable comeback though. The 22-year-old was left slack-jawed and speechless Wednesday night upon learning the Golden State Warriors would’ve set a franchise record for made threes in their <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/gsw-vs-sac-0012400023/box-score#box-score" rel="noopener">122-112</a> win over the Sacramento Kings if the game had been played during the regular season.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Kuminga’s response to finding out that the 28 threes the Warriors made tonight would be a franchise record if it were a regular-season game:</p><p>“For real? Not only were the new-look Dubs coming off a putrid performance from beyond the arc in their exhibition opener, but they’re still adjusting to life without a franchise icon who has a legitimate case as the second best shooter ever.</p><p>Kuminga, of course, enjoyed a front row seat for Klay Thompson’s shot-making exploits over the first three years of his career. An easy assumption coming into 2024-25 is that Golden State would rely less on the long ball now that Stephen Curry’s Splash Brother plays for the Dallas Mavericks. A concerted and extended effort to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jonathan-kuminga-faces-harsh-warriors-reality-contract-season">deploy Kuminga</a>, a developing long-range shooter, at small forward alongside two bigs during preseason seemingly supports that notion, too.</p><p>But Steve Kerr has repeatedly stressed he wants Golden State to launch even more triples this season, and Kuminga certainly looked comfortable spotting up from deep on Wednesday while shooting 4-of-7 on threes, none of which came from the corner.</p><p>Significant for the Warriors as major shooting strides would be from Kuminga, he’s not one of the players specifically tasked with replacing Thompson in the lineup. That onus falls to De’Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield, among others, both of whom flamed nets against the Kings while utilizing some of the same actions and concepts Thompson did with the Dubs for over a decade.</p><h2><b>Warriors’ Buddy Hield, De’Anthony Melton did best Klay Thompson impression vs. Kings</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Warriors-Buddy-Hield-reacts-during-a-preseason-game.jpg"><figcaption>Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Golden State didn’t add a plug-and-play replacement for Thompson over the summer. As much as he’s declined defensively since suffering those devastating back-to-back leg injuries a few years ago, Thompson still holds value on that end due to his positional size, strength and experience. Every team in the NBA wants a 6’7 sharpshooter who isn’t an abject negative defensively. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-klay-thompson-contract-free-agency">Thompson in Dallas</a>, the Dubs don’t have one anymore.</p><p>From purely a shooting perspective, though, Hield is close to Thompson’s modern-day equal—an imminent and flammable threat from beyond the arc who confidently lets fly off movement and off-platform, striking constant fear in the heart of defenses.</p><p>How many times did Thompson create just a sliver of space for Curry to shoot with small-small ball screens? Hield helped bail Golden State out of what would’ve been a wasted possession late in the first quarter on Wednesday, setting a random ghost screen for Melton late in the shot clock. Look how much extra room just Hield’s presence creates for Melton as Malik Monk is wary of him quickly popping behind the arc for an open triple.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Wide pindowns are a staple of pretty much every NBA offense. Unfortunately for most of the league, there are only so many players who boast the pristine footwork, quick release and mental processing speed to exploit defenders cheating under off-ball screens.</p><p>Hield, like Thompson, will almost always make defenses pay in that scenario.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Hield is definitely the Dubs’ closest working facsimile to Thompson, but he’s hardly the only one picking up the four-time champion’s slack from deep. Melton is fresh following a season mostly marred by a back injury, poised to blow his career-high of 5.6 three-point attempts per game out of the water.</p><p>“It’d be hard for us to win a lot of games unless we shoot high-volume threes,” Kerr said <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1844246144995766617">after the game</a>, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “What I like about this team is that even though we’ve lost Klay, we have more shooting depth. We have, I think, more guys who can step in from one night to the next and make threes. It’ll be a big part of our team for sure.”</p><p>Golden State, believe it or not, can run successful split actions without either Splash Brother. Melton had cashed three triples by the time both De’Aaron Fox and Keon Ellis followed him on this late first-half possession, freeing Hield for one of the easiest looks he’ll get before the regular season tips off in a couple weeks.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>The Warriors aren’t content to simply run it back with a different cast of characters in 2024-25, though. Losing Thompson isn’t this team’s only change offensively; so is its overall means of attack.</p><p>Thompson worked off hundreds if not thousands of flare screens during his storied tenure with the Dubs. Melton does just that in the clip below, but from a set play favored for years by new Warriors assistant and longtime Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts as opposed to the general flow of Golden State’s read-and-react offense.</p><p>Melton catches with a clear advantage after Kevon Looney’s flare, attacking the switch off an over-aggressive close-out. He also knows that Hield had just received an exit screen from Kyle Anderson on the other side of the floor, sparking confusion that leaves the Dubs’ new best non-Curry shooter wide open on the wing as the ball creases the paint.</p><p>Splash.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Preseason games are mostly for public fodder. What happens behind closed doors in practices, shootarounds and film sessions matter just as much to teams as exhibition play itself. The Dubs definitely can’t count on approaching or surpassing the franchise record for made threes on a nightly basis come the regular season.</p><p>Still, Golden State’s historic hot hand on Wednesday revealed more than this revamped roster’s ability to replicate Thompson’s long-range volume. With players like Hield and Melton in the fold, the Warriors can use the same plays and a similar—if more structured and intentional—overall offensive approach to generate threes that they did while winning four titles with Thompson wearing blue and gold.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The three options that they have as a potential starter at the two also provide different dimensions to the team. Now, it remains unclear which dimension the Warriors will be prioritizing.</p><p>If the Warriors want better two-way balance, they could start De’Anthony Melton alongside Stephen Curry. Melton has the length and instincts to smother opposing ballhandlers, and he is active in the passing lanes as well. He is a streaky shooter, however, and he doesn’t provide much playmaking. But he is far and away the best perimeter defender the Warriors have at either guard position.</p><p>If they want a player who can keep the offense humming, Brandin Podziemski is their guy. Podziemski has impeccable feel for the game, and his movement off the basketball as well as his understanding of the Warriors system has made him a favorite within the organization.</p><p>With the departure of Klay Thompson, the Warriors could then roll with one of the greatest shooters of all time to replace him in Buddy Hield. Not to mention, he and Curry are neck-and-neck in one category.</p><p>The two players are <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask?q=most+three+pointers+made+since+2016-17+season" rel="noopener">first and second in most threes made</a> since the 2016-17 season (Hield’s rookie season). Curry leads with 2,154, while Hield has 1,924. The newest Warrior is ahead of all-stars like James Harden and Damian Lillard. Although Thompson was one of the emotional leaders, the basketball side of things will be more of the same for Kerr.<br><br>“So I don’t anticipate a difficult transition basketball-wise,” Kerr said. “It’s more just the emotional void of Klay being gone after being so close with him and going through so much with him. That part is really sad. But you have to move on.”</p><p>The Warriors have another two weeks before the regular season begins. With Thompson in Dallas and Hield in Golden State, the roles will be similar but different. There will be plenty of small ball lineups just like there have been in seasons prior. Dwyane Wade left the Miami Heat after 13 seasons before ultimately returning, and LeBron James has played for three different teams over his Hall of Fame career. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-draymond-green-klay-thompson-gone-mavericks">Klay Thompson’s decision to leave the Golden State Warriors</a> was a little different than other legends who have switched teams in the offseason, especially since Thompson was supposed to retire in a Warriors uniform next to Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-klay-thompson-future-amid-diminishing-role">idea of Thompson leaving Golden State had been growing</a> ever since the start of the 2023-24 season. With the five-time All-Star wanting a new extension and to be paid like his counterparts, it seemed inevitable that change was going to happen for the Warriors, an organization that had changed the landscape of the league over the last decade with their four title runs since 2015.</p><p>Even with Thompson now a member of the Dallas Mavericks, a bitter rival of the Warriors, his legacy will always be cemented in the Bay Area. The four championship runs Thompson went on with Curry and Green will never be erased, and this bond these three players share will never be broken.</p><p>Then again, it appears as if Steph and Draymond are both ready to flip the page and <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/41669062/steph-curry-draymond-green-golden-state-warriors-klay-thompson" rel="noopener">show Klay that he made the wrong decision</a>.</p><p>“Through training camps and practices, we played against each other on opposite teams,” Curry said, via ESPN, “but nothing like an actual competitive NBA game. So they’ll have the ceremony … and I’m going to be fully engaged and present and making sure you celebrate him the way he’s supposed to. And then after that, it’s war. That’s how we’re all built.”</p><p>If anyone is ready for the matchup against Thompson, it is Green. Thompson and Green will remain close friends off the court, but when the Warriors play the Mavericks, we should expect nothing less than a lot of talking between the former teammates.</p><p>“It’s a happy divorce, if there’s a divorce,” Green stated. “A lot of divorces are nasty. This ain’t one of them. I don’t even qualify it as a divorce. It’s just the next chapter in all of our lives. Curry, Green, and Thompson basically came into the league with one another and turned a failing organization into one of the greatest in all of professional sports.</p><p>While they may not be teammates anymore, this relationship will still be strong moving forward.</p><p>“It’s weird, we talked about [taking the boat out] when we first came into the league, stuff that we used to do together,” Curry said. “Then you start having families, me and Draymond have multiple kids and schedules going crazy. But I will get on this boat at some point, even though we’re not teammates anymore.</p><p>“You’re friends first, teammates second. And that is how the relationship is, and we will always be. I wish it was both. But I love Klay. I respect him for 78 games out of the year. I won’t say I’ll be rooting for him, but I’ll be watching him. The other four games we play him, I’ll be ready to go at him.”</p><p>Draymond may be ready to run through Klay’s chest when they play against one another for the first time on November 12, but at the end of the day, these three stars are brothers. The move was heartbreaking for Warriors fans, as Thompson played a pivotal role in four championship victories. Additionally, Thompson’s departure had a significant impact on Warriors players. Draymond Green recently revealed the exact moment in which he realized Thompson was likely going to leave.</p><p>According to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN, Green <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/41669062/steph-curry-draymond-green-golden-state-warriors-klay-thompson" rel="noopener">revealed that</a> Thompson called him during the summer, something the former Warriors guard rarely did.</p><p>“He gone,” Green said he told his wife, according to ESPN. “He didn’t say nothing yet. But he gone.”</p><p>Thompson then told Green his free agency plans, as he planned to head to the Mavs.</p><p>Klay Thompson had spent his entire career with the Warriors, winning championships alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. However, a contract extension failed to come to fruition ahead of Thompson’s contract year in 2023-24. That led to intense speculation about Thompson’s potential departure.</p><p>Golden State was then eliminated from the postseason in a play-in game defeat. Thompson had a respectable regular season, but he struggled in the play-in game. It was a sour note to end his Warriors career on, but fans and the team will remember all of the positives that Klay brought to the Warriors.</p><p>He approached the game in a professional manner and emerged as one of the greatest three-point shooters of all-time. Thompson, as aforementioned, became a four-time champion with the Warriors as well. Thompson’s teammates are also thrilled for the opportunity to play alongside another future Hall of Famer.</p><p>The Mavericks now have three future Hall of Famers on the roster with Thompson, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Dallas’ depth is enticing as well, and the Mavs should have a realistic opportunity to make another NBA Finals run.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Warriors are in an uncertain position. Curry and Green are set to lead the roster once again. Yet, this isn’t the same Golden State team that was formerly a dynasty.</p><p>There are currently no guarantees when it comes to the 2024-25 Warriors. Could they compete and earn a play-in or official playoff spot? Sure, but Golden State is certainly not a championship favorite this year. Of course, counting out any Stephen Curry-led team is risky.</p><p>Nevertheless, Thompson and the Warriors are headed on two different paths. Golden State may need to enter a rebuild soon, while Thompson is hoping to earn at least one more championship in his career.</p><p>Klay Thompson will make his return to play his former team on November 12 when the Warriors host the Mavericks. Thompson and Irving are out for “rest,” as teams are often cautious about stars’ playing time in the preseason. However, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said that Thompson and Irving <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1843416351693775140" rel="noopener">will most likely play</a> in the Mavs’ three remaining preseason games.</p><p>The Mavericks are set to host the Utah Jazz on Thursday night. Thompson and Irving could end up making their 2024-25 NBA preseason debuts on Thursday evening according to Kidd’s comments.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-klay-thompson-contract-free-agency">Thompson, who was acquired by the Mavericks during the offseason</a>, is one of the best three-point shooters of all-time. Still, it will be an adjustment for Thompson with a new team, as he had previously spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors. The Mavericks want their stars to develop chemistry by playing alongside one another in the preseason.</p><p>It is still uncertain as to when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-luka-doncic-calf-injury-training-camp">Luka Doncic will return as he is battling a calf injury</a>. At the very least, the Mavs want Irving and Thompson to develop experience playing alongside one another.</p><p>“The continuity is getting better each day, those two (Irving and Thompson) coach each other,” Kidd said. “They both didn’t want to come out of any reps, which is cool. Klay wants to do every rep.”</p><p>Kidd added that he is hopeful to have Doncic return “soon” so the three stars can continue to develop chemistry with each other. With that being said, Doncic does not have an official return timeline as of this story’s writing.</p><h2><b>Mavericks’ preseason outlook</b></h2><p>Staying healthy is the primary goal for the Mavs in the preseason. Of course, getting healthy can be added to that goal with players such as Luka Doncic and PJ Washington (Washington is dealing with a hip injury, but it’s not considered serious) battling injury concerns.
