A star of George’s caliber is incredibly hard to find, but allowing George to walk <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-kris-dunn-russell-westbrook-trade-nearly-solidifies-2024-25-opening-night-roster">gave the Clippers a number of options</a> to improve their team. Among the biggest moves they made were the additions of Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn.</p><p>Jones Jr. was an unexpected addition after he made an agent change before free agency and complicated his negotiating capabilities with the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs pivoted to New Orleans Pelicans free agent Naji Marshall, clearing the path for Derrick Jones Jr. to find a new home with the team that suddenly had the space to sign him. Jones Jr. was signed to a three-year, $30 million deal.</p><p>Kris Dunn was a free agent guard from the Utah Jazz and was acquired in the sign-and-trade that included guard Russell Westbrook. He was ultimately signed to a three-year, $17 million deal, effectively taking over the backup point guard spot that Westbrook struggled with last season.</p><h2><b>Derrick Jones Jr. and Kris Dunn’s impact on the Clippers</b></h2><p>The Clippers started the season with a loss against the Phoenix Suns in the first ever game at Intuit Dome. That was a close game, however, with both Jones Jr. and Dunn showcasing portions of their skillsets on both ends of the floor, but primarily on defense.</p><p>Winning cures everything, however, and allows some of the performances to stick out even more. That’s exactly the case with the impressive two-game road trip the Clippers just had against the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Clippers-James-Harden-vs.jpg"><figcaption>© Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>LA defeated the Nuggets and Warriors in a couple of close games, with Dunn and Jones Jr. being key contributors to back-to-back impressive performances.</p><p>Through these first three games, Kris Dunn has <a href="https://twitter.com/TomerAzarly/status/1851005687750672561" rel="noopener">recorded 12 deflections</a> to go along with his six steals. In the preseason, the Clippers had the second-best defensive rating in the league at 94.2 points per 100 possessions, behind only the Portland Trail Blazers.</p><p>Through the first three games of the regular season, the Clippers have the third best defensive rating in the league at 103.2 points per 100 possessions. They trail only the Oklahoma City Thunder (90.8 DRTG) and Golden State Warriors (95.9 DRTG).</p><p>Their opponents haven’t been easy either. They lost an overtime thriller against Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal and the Phoenix Suns. In what was an emotional game with the full unveil of the Intuit Dome, Durant drilled a game-tying fadeaway in the final seconds to force overtime, where the Suns ended up winning.</p><p>The Clippers then went to Denver on the first night of a back-to-back where they beat three-time MVP Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets in a place they haven’t won since Christmas Day 2020. And that was a game without fans. The last time the Clippers beat the Nuggets in Denver where fans were able to attend was February 2018, almost six years ago.</p><p>On the second night of a back-to-back set, the Clippers went to San Francisco to face a well-rested Golden State Warriors team that had won both of their first two games against the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers by 35+ points. Another team-wide effort led to another big victory.</p><p>James Harden has recorded three straight double-doubles for the Clippers to start the year.</p><p>Ivica Zubac is averaging 22.7 points, 14 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game as he leads the league in boards.</p><p>Norman Powell recorded a 37 point game against the Nuggets, including 22 points in the fourth quarter.</p><p>Derrick Jones Jr. had 14 first-half points against the Warriors, keeping the Clippers in it while James Harden found his shot and Norman Powell dealt with foul trouble.</p><p>Kris Dunn had six points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals, and <a href="https://twitter.com/FlyByKnite/status/1850767779810726269" rel="noopener">seven deflections</a> against the Warriors in the win as well.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">According to the NBA's tracking data, in addition to his 4 official steals this evening, LA Clippers guard Kris Dunn racked up 7 deflections.</p><p>— Justin Russo (@FlyByKnite) <a href="https://twitter.com/FlyByKnite/status/1850767779810726269?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 28, 2024</a></p></blockquote><p><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p></figure><p>And just wait until Kawhi Leonard returns, hopefully healthy.</p><p>This is what the Clippers envisioned when they let Paul George walk to free agency: A much more complete team centered around a star or two, but with much better complementary talent and specialists. </p><p>Now with a five-game homestand coming up, the Clippers have a chance to continue establishing themselves as one of the grittiest teams in the league.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

From the Lob City era to the Kawhi Leonard-Paul George era, he brings you everything you need to know about the Clippers.In his off time, Tomer likes to play basketball, video games, and draw.You can follow his Twitter for all Clippers content.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Exclusive</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>LAS VEGAS, NV — The Los Angeles Clippers took one final step towards solifying their opening night roster for the 2024-25 NBA season on Thursday when they finalized an agreement to trade Russell Westbrook to the Utah Jazz for Kris Dunn.</p><p>As part of the sign-and-trade agreement, Kris Dunn is signing a three-year deal worth $17 million. That should solidify what will be the Clippers roster heading into the 2024-25 NBA season.</p><h2>Russell Westbrook Trade</h2><p>As the NBA’s Summer League began, the Clippers had two remaining objectives: Find a trade partner for Russell Westbrook in a deal that would bring back Kris Dunn in a sign-and trade. The other was to find a taker for PJ Tucker.</p><p>Westbrook picked up his player option for the 2024-25 season despite knowing that the Clippers were not interested in retaining his services, league sources told ClutchPoints. It’s unclear whether Westbrook was aware of the interest by the Denver Nuggets at the time, but opting in guaranteed him money heading into next season, which is 100 percent the right decision as a player.</p><p>The Clippers, however, immediately began looking at trade packages that would help them land Dunn while also not ridding themselves of any assets in the process. When trade talks initially began, the Jazz were willing to help facilitate a trade to get Kris Dunn to his desired spot, but were unwilling to take on Westbrook’s deal.</p><p>After weeks of searching for a third team to take on Westbrook’s deal with the idea of waiving him to hit free agency, the Clippers were able to entice Utah to make the one-for-one deal by adding in a second round pick swap as well as cash to make up for having to waive him.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Denver-expected-to-sign-Russell-Westbrook-after-Clippers-Jazz-trade.jpg"><figcaption>CP</figcaption></figure><p>According to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, the <a href="https://x.com/Tjonesonthenba/status/1814029355770851530">second round pick swap</a> will be for the year 2030.</p><p>The Clippers and Westbrook’s representation had been working on deals over the last few weeks, and Russell’s intentions were always to end up joining Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets once he cleared waivers. He’ll have the chance to officially do so in a couple of days.</p><h2>PJ Tucker’s Future</h2><p>All the Clippers have left now is what to do with PJ Tucker.</p><p>Tucker, who has had a fine NBA career and won an NBA Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021, is way past his prime. He believes he’s still able to contribute on a championship contending team, and after seeing him outscore Paul George in the second half of an elimination Game 6 against the Mavs, maybe that’s true.</p><p>But after being given opportunities by Tyronn Lue and the team, he proved to be inconsequential. Tucker opted into the final year of his deal, which is set to pay him $11.5 million. Now, the Clippers have a number of options they can consider.</p><p>The Clippers can waive and stretch his deal, which would mean he’d be a $3 million cap hit every year over the next three years. They can also just waive him outright and be done with the deal entirely after this season. A buyout is also something the Clippers would consider, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-inside-pj-tuckers-frustrations-and-future-with-clippers">Tucker himself told ClutchPoints</a> multiple times that a buyout is not on the table for him. Lastly, they can find a trade partner for him — a championship contender convinced they could use him — but even that seems like a long shot considering the assets they would need to include to move off of his deal.</p><p>At this stage, it remains unclear what happens with Tucker. The team could certainly use his roster spot going into the season, whether it be for a future player or a guy like Jordan Miller, who is having an exceptional Summer League in Las Vegas thus far.</p><p>Beyond that, the Clippers roster, however, looks pretty much set. There were rumblings about the team potentially adding Tyus Jones to the roster via a sign-and-trade, but league sources told ClutchPoints that the Clippers were not a strong destination for Jones, with the team focused on acquiring Kris Dunn in a sign-and-trade.</p><p>There have also been reports linking the Clippers to Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, but sources have told ClutchPoints the reported interest has not been coming from the LA Clippers’ side. Additionally, the team is hard-capped at the first apron with this sign-and-trade of Dunn.</p><p>President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank essentially confirmed that when speaking with members of the media earlier this week, stating that the Clippers were not going to make a, ‘reckless,’ move that would impact their long-term flexibility in an attempt to find an immediate third scorer.</p><p>“In terms of being opportunistic via trades, we’ll always look out for that,” Lawrence Frank said. “So I think we’re going to be highly competitive in the short term while looking for opportunities get better and also we want to maintain some flexibility in the longterm. For that sustainability, we’re not going to all of a sudden say, ‘okay Paul’s out, let’s go run and do something that maybe doesn’t fit within the big picture that could be reckless.’ We’re not going to do that at the expense of trying to find a third scorer. Team building for each team is going to be different with this new CBA, the ages of your best players and what they’re making impacts what you do. So we’ll look at everything, but we’re not going to be reckless if it really sacrifices future flexibility going forward because I think we’re going to be very good in the short term and we’re also going to have flexibility in the long term to make this a sustainable organization that’s always in pursuit of winning championships.”</p><p>Now that they have their guy, the roster is just about set for the 2024-25 season.</p><h2>The Clippers Expected Roster For The 2024-25 Season</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Nicolas-Batum-James-Harden-Kawhi-Leoanrd-Los-Angeles-Clippers.jpeg"><figcaption>CP</figcaption></figure><p>James Harden will start at point guard with Kris Dunn backing him up. Between the strong playmaking and scoring punch that Harden provides as well as the defensive versatility that Dunn will bring, the Clippers have a strong point guard tandem.</p><p>After being named a starter last year, Terance Mann is expected to retain that position on opening night with Norman Powell backing him up. The Clippers and Mann’s camp have initiated extension talks, but there’s no timeline on that getting done. Essentially a home-grown talent, another strong year should be in store for Terance Mann. Meanwhile, Norman Powell’s scoring is going to be even more vital this year with Paul George out of the picture. Powell, who took on more of a catch-and-shoot role last year once James Harden arrived, is expected to have much heavier on-ball usage next year.</p><p>Derrick Jones Jr. fresh off of a strong playoff run with the Dallas Mavericks, is expected to start as well with Amir Coffey backing him up. Jones Jr. made it a point to say he was the number one on-ball defender last year, and he’ll take on the nightly challenge of defending the opposing team’s best players. Amir Coffey had a strong year last year, but struggled in the playoffs. He’ll look to make another jump for the Clippers.</p><p>Kawhi Leonard, despite reports that he was not fond of starting at the power forward slot, will be back in that role again to start next season. Leonard is expected to be healthy and available at the start of training camp. With Leonard’s return also comes the return of Nicolas Batum and his ‘Batum Batallion.’ Batum will slot in as the backup power forward, spacing the floor out and occasionally taking on strong defensive matchups to help relieve Leonard of the two-way workload over an 82-game season.</p><p>Finally, Ivica Zubac will start at center and should be a much more featured player in the Clippers offense. Last season, Zubac averaged a career high 11.7 points on 64.9 percent shooting to go along with his 9.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game. He’s another guy the Clippers are in extension talks with and another guy the Clippers feel is a home-grown talent, so a big year is in store for Zubac as well. Mo Bamba, who is coming off a solid year with the Philadelphia 76ers, is expected to be the backup center for the Clippers next season. He shot 49 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three while averaging 1.1 blocks in just 13 minutes a game last season.</p><p>In addition to those 10 players, the Clippers will also have Kevin Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland on the roster, but it’s unclear what their futures look like at the moment. Kobe Brown, Moussa Diabate, Jordan Miller, and Cam Christie will round out the roster. There’s a potential path to playing time for guys like Brown or Diabate, especially with the glaring need for youth and athleticism, but it’s far too early to tell what that will look like right now.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The league <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/kris-dunn-jabari-smith-jr-suspended-after-altercation" rel="noopener">announced the suspensions</a> on Sunday, via the NBA’s official website.</p><p><i>“Utah Jazz guard Kris Dunn has been suspended two games without pay for initiating an altercation and throwing a punch at Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr., who has been suspended one game for fighting with Dunn, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations.”</i></p><h2><b>Rockets’ Jabari Smith Jr. gets slapped with suspension</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Jabari-Smith-Jr.-Rockets-warming-up-before-a-game.jpg"><figcaption>Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Rockets will be without Smith for one game after the NBA handed down a suspension on the young forward due to his role in an on-court altercation with Dunn. This is an unfortunate development for the former Auburn Tigers star, especially since his suspension came not long after he put up a stinker in a recent matchup against the Chicago Bulls.</p><p>Smith scored just five points on a poor 2-for-10 shooting from the field and 0-for-4 shooting from behind the arc in 22 minutes of action during last Thursday’s 127-117 loss at home at the hands of the Bulls.</p><p>Smith was looking to recover from that bad performance when he stepped on the floor versus the Jazz but instead was able to play for just nine minutes before getting kicked out of the ball game after his scuffle with Dunn. Before he left the Jazz game, the 20-year-old Smith had generated only five points, two rebounds, and two assists while shooting 2-for-3 from the field in the nine minutes he was inside the court. The Rockets still won the game, though, to the tune of a 147-119 score to extend their win streak to eight games.</p><h2><b>Kris Dunn also gets suspended</b></h2><p>Dunn got a harsher suspension from the league, as he will be out for the next Jazz games for his role in the altercation. The league gave him a slightly more serious penalty after the NBA determined that he initiated the fight. It did not help Dunn’s case that he also threw a punch at Smith.</p><p>The former first-round pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves coughed up just six points on 1-for-3 shooting from the field and added a rebound in the six minutes he saw action against the Rockets. Dunn, who has not scored more than eight points in any of his last seven outings, will be eligible to come back from his suspension on Mar. 29 against, interestingly enough, the Rockets again, but it’s going to be in Salt Lake City. Hopefully for Smith and Dunn, they have already put the altercation behind them and will not let their history distract them the next time they share the court.</p><p>On the season, Dunn, who is a product of the Providence Friars basketball program, is averaging 5.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists with a 47.1 field goal percentage,</p><h2><b>When will Jabari Smith Jr. return from suspension?</b></h2><p>As for Smith, he will be eligible to get back to action from his suspension on Wednesday when the Rockets kick off a two-game road trip with a showdown against the powerful side of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder. The teams, or more specifically Dunn and Smith, came out swinging in the second quarter. Just moments into the second quarter, the two began grabbing each other’s jersey at the free-throw line and pushing one another. Things quickly escalated, as both threw and missed punches as referees and teammates ran in to intervene.</p><p>Both players were ejected from the game and will likely be slapped with at least a one-game suspension by the NBA for fighting.</p><p>Dunn, who had struggled for years in the league, has seemingly found a home in Utah. A former fifth overall pick, Dunn bounced around the NBA, playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks, and Portland Trail Blazers, in addition to the G League, before signing a 10-day contract with the Jazz in February 2023. He eventually inked a multi-year deal with Utah and has established himself as one of the best defensive guards in the NBA.</p><p>Smith was selected by the Rockets with the third overall pick in the 2022 draft. In his second year, Smith has improved his efficiency, improving his points, rebounds, assists, and steals game averages while shooting at higher clips from the field, three-point range, and free-throw line.</p><p>With Smith playing well <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-jalen-greens-insane-hot-streak-eye-opening-comparison-ime-udoka">alongside Jalen Green</a>, Houston is on a hot streak and threatening the Golden State Warriors for the 10-seed in the West. Doncic even pulled off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-luka-doncic-explodes-historic-nba-triple-double-half-jazz" rel="noopener">historic first half</a> in which he skewered Utah’s defense for 29 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds for a triple-double in just the initial 24 minutes of the contest. Overall, Doncic had 40 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes to lead the Mavs to an easy 147-97 victory.</p><p>It’s perfectly understandable if Dunn and the rest of the Jazz were annoyed by the brilliance of Doncic, as they had no answer to the Mavs weapon. I’ve been through the G League, I’ve been waived, I’ve been traded, I’ve had injuries, so I’ve seen what the league as a business is about and throughout it, I’ve come to understand that it is a business and how to be a pro, on and off the court.”</p><p>Although Dunn has only played in six games this season, the Jazz could choose to invest in what they’ve seen from the 28-year-old in a small sample size. Dunn is the best defender that they have on the roster because of his natural talent and instincts. However, he also has been impressive as a ball-handler and facilitator with a true point guard’s mentality, an element that’s been missing since veteran Mike Conley Jr. was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.</p><p>Dunn is averaging 12.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.7 steals in 23.3 minutes per game for the Jazz this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The point guard is also dishing 4.5 assists and snagging 3.8 rebounds per game in just over 22 minutes of action. He has been a welcome addition to a group that is doing their best to hang onto one of the last spots in the NBA Play-In Tournament.</p><p>Dunn came into the league with much fanfare after being a key catalyst of a massive cultural renovation in Providence. He helped the program end a decade-plus drought in the NCAA Tournament with three consecutive trips to the Big Dance. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. Things quickly went downhill after that, though.</p><p>He shot under 38 percent from the floor his rookie season and then was included in the trade that sent Zach LaVine to the Chicago Bulls and landed Jimmy Butler in Minnesota. Dunn had his three best years in the Windy City before bouncing around the league a bit. It seemed that a lengthy NBA career would not be in the cards.</p><p>However, Dunn’s determination allowed him to work his way through the Los Angeles Clippers’ G-League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go. In 13 games, he shot a blistering near-60 percent from the field (41 percent 3-point shooting).</p><p>The 31-33 Jazz are in a tricky situation with a rebuild possibly on the horizon for 2023-24. For now, though, the team is forging ahead with the hopes of being in the Western Conference postseason picture come April.</p><p>Dunn furthering his redemption arc in Salt Lake City fits nicely into that plan.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Nonetheless, as the aggressive Collin Sexton remains out with a hamstring injury, Dunn has made quite the impression. Though not particularly shifty, hes a high-level ball-handler who can get into the lane with ease. Using his strength, he can often get a floater off against tough defenses. Such was the case on Friday, as Dunn played the second-most minutes of any player in the second unit, only behind rookie wing Ochai Agbaji.</p><p>He did, however, go 1-4 from 3-point range. His struggles shooting from deep have been the primary reason he has had trouble sticking on a roster despite having multiple attributes you would want in a player. However, for a team that is missing the defensive prowess and playmaking ability of Mike Conley Jr., Dunn provides a lot of what Conley could bring regardless.</p><p>As the Jazz are currently in the playoff hunt, Dunn’s defense could be particularly useful in the postseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Atlanta gets a quality defensive guard that they can pair alongside star guard Trae Young, who, despite his impressive offensive repertoire, has some known deficiencies on the other side of the floor. Dunn has become one of the top perimeter defenders in the NBA. He should be able to cover Young’s defensive shortcomings on the perimeter.</p><p>This will be the former Providence standout’s third stop in the NBA. After initially starting out his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Dunn spent three seasons with the Chicago Bulls.</p><p>Last season, Dunn saw a dip in playing time for the Bulls, averaging just around 25 minutes compared to nearly 30 minutes through his first two seasons with the franchise. In 51 games, including 32 starts, the former no. 5 overall pick turned in nightly numbers of <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dunnkr01.html">7.3 points</a>, 3.6 assists, and 2.0 steals, while shooting a career-best 44.4 percent from the field.</p><p>Dunn has yet to develop a sound offensive game through his four-year career, lacking the ability to shoot consistently from the perimeter. Shooting has become a premium for most guards around the league. However, Dunn’s defense has made him a valuable role player in the NBA. Certainly, his defensive prowess will be a good addition to an offensive-minded team like Atlanta.</p><p>The Hawks were pretty active on day 1 of free agency and continue to be so on the second day. They landed quite a big fish, signing veteran forward Danilo Gallinari to a three-year, $61.5 million contract.</p><p>And it doesn’t seem like they are done. Several reports claim that Atlanta is in the driver’s seat to land free agent guard Bogdan Bogdanovic.</p><p>After finishing with the second worst record in the East last year, the Hawks are making a huge push to make the playoffs next season.
