A few days later, fellow Celtics center <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-spurs-pursue-key-celtics-free-agent-luke-kornet" rel="noopener">Luke Kornet was sent to the San Antonio Spurs</a>. </p><p>On Monday, the Celtics <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1939837536127553947" rel="noopener">officially signed</a> Minnesota Timberwolves center Luka Garza to a two-year, $5.5 million fully guaranteed deal, per Shams Charania of ESPN. </p><p>Garza is coming off a season in which he played 5.6 minutes per game and averaged less than five points and rebounds per game. As for Portzingis, he averaged 19.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game with the Celtics. </p><p>Portzingis played two seasons in Boston (2023-2025). He played 57 games in his first season and 42 in his second while battling injuries. While his stint was short, Portzingis won an NBA championship with the Celtics in 2024. </p><p>That year, he became the first Latvian player to win an NBA championship. Kornet played five seasons in Boston and was also part of the 2024 championship team. </p><p>He averaged 5.2 points per game and shot 53.6% from the field.  As for Garza, he has been in the league since 2021, when the Detroit Pistons drafted him. </p><p>He has been with the Timberwolves since 2022. Throughout his career, he has shot 49% from the field and 31.4% from the three-point line. </p><h2><b>What does Luka Garza bring to the Celtics? </b></h2><p>Garza is a young, irreverent player still looking for his big break. In terms of scoring, he can be effective in the paint and on the perimeter. </p><p>Additionally, Garza can be a significant force in rebounding and is also very athletic. Garza will be a backup center, providing considerable minutes off the bench. </p><p>In other words, he will be in the same position as Kornet. When it comes to utilizing the pick and roll, Garza can use his size (7 foot 1) to his advantage when it comes to cutting to the basket for easy points. </p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The move signals that the Hawks’ front office is committed to building a contender around point guard Trae Young in the short term while still maintaining their flexibility.</p><p>On Thursday, Porzingis made some of <a href="https://x.com/HawksFanTV/status/1938209565012607159" rel="noopener">his first remarks</a> since the trade, taking to Instagram to write “genuinely excited for what’s ahead” next to a ClutchPoints graphic of the Hawks’ potential new starting lineup (via HawksFanTV on X, formerly Twitter).</p><p>Porzingis had previously taken to X to thank the Celtics and the city of Boston for his time there.</p><h2><b>A big move for the Hawks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Hawks-star-Trae-Young-drives-down-the-court.jpg"><figcaption>Brett Davis-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>By trading for Porzingis, the Hawks were able to not only get off of their worst contract in Terance Mann but also bring in arguably the most accomplished player Trae Young has ever played with.</p><p>If he can stay healthy, Porzingis will provide the Hawks with an elite floor spacer and capable shot creator who can also protect the basket on the other end of the floor at an elite level.</p><p>Of course, the word “if” is a gigantic part of the above statement, as health is never a guarantee with the Latvian big man. This past postseason, it wasn’t an injury but rather a mysterious illness that severely hampered Porzingis during the Celtics’ playoff run, to the point where head coach Joe Mazzulla had to bench him.</p><p>Still, it was a relatively low-risk move for the Hawks, and they’ll have the ability to let Porzingis hit free agency next offseason if things don’t go according to plan.</p><p>It’s worth wondering how much of the Hawks’ aggression in making this move was due to how wide open the Eastern Conference seems to be, with multiple star players–including Porzingis’ former Celtics teammate Jayson Tatum–likely out for next season due to Achilles tears.</p><p>While it remains to be seen if it will work, the Hawks now have a clear and consistent vision for the first time in a while.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Orlando Magic already made their move, trading for Desmond Bane weeks ago to bolster their roster. Now, it’s the Atlanta Hawks’ turn, as they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">made a deal to trade for Kristaps Porzingis</a>, while sending George Niang to the Boston Celtics and Terance Mann to the Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>Porzingis has spent the past two seasons with the Celtics, and when he’s been on the floor, his impact shows up on both sides of the ball. Injuries and other health-related issues cut down his playing time, but when he was available, the Celtics knew what they were getting. With new ownership in Boston and plans to save money, there was a good chance he was <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1937644320070467798" rel="noopener">getting moved</a> in the offseason.</p><p>Porzingis has now found himself on the Hawks, where the style of offense should be somewhat similar to the Celtics when it comes to spacing the floor.</p><h2><b>Kristaps Porzingis gives the Hawks another floor spacer</b></h2><p>Throughout Porzingis’ career, he’s been one of the better perimeter shooting bigs in the league. Last season, Porzingis averaged 19.5 points per game, shooting 48% from the field and 41% from the 3-point line. The Hawks are probably licking their chops looking at that 3-point percentage, and over his career, he’s shot 37% from deep. The Hawks have shown that they want versatility from their centers, and that’s what they got last year from players such as Onyeka Okongwu, Larry Nance Jr., and Dominick Barlow, all players who could extend their range.</p><p>Though those players had the ability to stretch the floor, Porzingis is a tier above them in that category, and he’s shown that he can get hot at any minute. Outside of his 3-point shooting, he can be a mismatch in the mid-range and paint, and can shoot over almost any defender because of his 7’2 length.</p><p>With how teams would try to switch everything with the Celtics, Porzingis would find himself most of the time with an advantage on offense, and he easily made work of the opposition.</p><h2><b>The Hawks have a new </b>rim protector</h2><p>For the past few years, Clint Capela had been the anchor of the Hawks’ defense and was one of the better rim protectors in the league. After Okongwu was inserted into the starting lineup and there was less of Capela on the floor throughout the second half of the season, it was obvious that they needed someone who could be that true rim protector.</p><p>Coming into the offseason, the Hawks would have had chances to add someone either in the draft or free agency, but now, the issue may not be as pressing with Porzingis in the fold. At 7’2, he doesn’t even need to lift his feet off the ground at times to block a shot, but he can definitely meet somebody at the rim if he has to. The frontline of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/hawks-news-dyson-daniels-reveals-key-led-to-steals-record-atlanta">Hawks’ defense was already good with Dyson Daniels</a>, but now, opposing teams will have to deal with Porzingis once they get in the paint.</p><h2><b>Porzingis brings ‘optionality’</b></h2><p>General manager Onsi Saleh used the word “optionality” faithfully in his pre-draft availability with the media a few days ago, and he used it to describe the many avenues the Hawks could go into to improve their roster. When speaking about Porzingis, the Hawks can deploy him in different lineups that can help on both sides of the ball. With Porzingis’s ability to shoot the ball at a high level, they can pair him and Okongwu together in the frontcourt in some situations if they want to go big and match up with other teams.</p><p>Of course, people will want to know who starts between Porzingis and Okongwu, but that shouldn’t matter right now. In any situation, Okongwu will be playing the most minutes out of both of them, and Porzingis may be better off playing around 20-25 minutes to keep him fresh throughout the season.</p><p>Overall, the Hawks got a key chess piece on their team with Porzingis, and with the No. 13 pick and free agency coming up, there will be many more ways to help this team turn into a contender in the Eastern Conference.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It was his first game back since straining his calf in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, and his timely return helped transform him into a fan favorite.</p><p>Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only health issue Porzingis would encounter as a Celtic. The 7-footer <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-kristaps-porzingis-opens-up-illness-game-6-loss">came down with an unidentified viral illness</a> during the 2024-25 regular season and the lingering effects of that sickness seemingly zapped him of all his abilities in the playoffs.</p><p>Although he didn’t miss a single postseason outing in 2025, Porzingis was not himself, averaging just 7.7 points per game while shooting an abysmal 31.6% from the field. Since Boston’s ugly exit from the Eastern Conference Semifinals in May, the 2024 NBA champion is reportedly feeling better.</p><p>“Thanks for all the support and questions about my health,” he <a href="https://x.com/NoaDalzell/status/1937537274067005532" rel="noopener">posted on Instagram</a>. “I’ve been feeling excellent all offseason and looking forward to a healthy and strong [EuroBasket].”</p><h2><b>What’s next for Kristaps Porzingis?</b></h2><p>In August, Porzingis will be representing his home country of Latvia in the 42nd edition of the EuroBasket championship. He missed out on the 2024 Summer Olympics due to injury, and it’s no secret that the ex-Celtic is eager to lead his national team.</p><p>Once Porzingis’ summer ends, he’ll head to Atlanta (barring another trade) in preparation for the 2025-26 regular season. The Hawks, led by four-time All-Star Trae Young and promising youngsters Dyson Daniels and Jalen Johnson, have bigger expectations than usual. Adding Porzingis, who’ll earn almost $31 million next season, signals that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-rumors-atlanta-targeting-nickeil-alexander-walker-kristaps-porzingis-trade">they believe they can compete in an Eastern Conference</a> that’s as unpredictable as ever.</p><p>While one would expect Porzingis to be upset or angry after being moved off a perennial playoff team in the Celtics, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Boston got Holiday from Portland after the Damian Lillard trade, and Porzingis came from the Washington Wizards in the three-team Marcus Smart trade.</p><p>Holiday brought championship experience from the Milwaukee Bucks and played a key role in helping the Celtics secure the 2024 title over the Dallas Mavericks. Porzingis’ Boston tenure was often marred by injury, including during the 2024 championship run, but he still made key contributions when he was on the floor.</p><p>Unfortunately, Tatum’s Achilles tear expedited a breakup of the championship core. While that might sting Celtics fans, ducking the second apron gives the Green Team financial flexibility and the ability to build around the star duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.</p><h2><b>Are the Celtics eyeing a big man for the draft?</b></h2><p>One of the best ways to improve under the new CBA is through the draft. And it’s probably not a coincidence that the Celtics are making moves right before the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.</p><p>With Porzingis out, Boston’s big men include Al Horford, Luke Kornet, and Neemias Queta. Horford turned 39 years old this summer and even though the vet already has a potential Hall of Fame resume, he’s shown no signs of wanting to retire ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.</p><p>He, like Kornet, is currently a free agent. Bringing both bigs back without breaking the bank seems like the most logical course of action for the Celtics, but that would still make them a little hollow at center. Queta, who turns 26 in July, would ideally succeed Horford or Kornet and take a chunk of their minutes when necessary.</p><p>That’s not the strongest set of centers given Horford’s age and the fact that Kornet and Queta have both never started more than 18 games in a single season. Or someone else?</b></h2><p>A possible trade candidate is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-sam-hauser-franchise-record-jazz">sharp-shooter Sam Hauser</a>. Thanks to his contract extension last summer, he’ll earn around $10 million next season and $45 million total from now through 2029.</p><p>There are plenty of teams in the market for 3-point shooting, making Hauser a hot commodity. And since the Celtics just brought in a 3-point specialist in Niang and already roster a 24-year-old bench shooter, Baylor Scheierman, they might have even more reason to let Hauser go.</p><p>Conversely, they could flip Niang on draft night before he settles in and retain Hauser, a former G-Leaguer who the C’s have spent nearly five years developing. In a three-team deal involving the Atlanta Hawks and the Brooklyn Nets, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">the Celtics offloaded Kristaps Porzingis</a>. In return, Boston received Georges Niang while Terance Mann and the No. 22 pick in this year’s NBA Draft went to Brooklyn.</p><p>The move was a necessity for the Celtics, whose payroll was simply too much to justify. However, Boston now has some flexibility when it comes to their bottom line moving forward. Despite the trade, Celtics guard Jaylen Brown is still in trade rumors as teams try to pry Boston’s secondary star away from them.</p><p>Here are our trade grades for the Porzingis deal for the Hawks and Celtics.</p><h2>Atlanta Hawks: A-</h2><p>Entering the offseason, the Hawks had a $25 million trade exception they wanted to use. After a disappointing season in 2024-25, Atlanta has some big holes to fill. One of them was their center spot. Onyeka Okongwu replaced Clint Capela in the starting lineup after an injury took him out for a stretch. However, the spacing left Trae Young having to do a lot of heavy lifting offensively.</p><p>To bring in Porzingis and only give up Mann and Niang and a draft pick is a fantastic outcome. The former NBA champion projects to be another premier pick-and-roll partner alongside Young. While Okongwu continues to develop his outside jumper, the seven-footer can operate as a floor spacer and shot blocker alongside him.</p><p>While Porzingis’ health is a question mark at this point in his career, he is well worth the risk. His arrival also helps keep Young in Atlanta as the team shuts down rumors surrounding their star. A <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/atl/atlanta-hawks" rel="noopener">starting five</a> featuring Young, Dyson Daniels, Zaccharie Risacher, Jalen Johnson, and Porzingis is a well-balanced defensive monster.</p><h2>Boston Celtics: B-</h2><p>This is the second Celtics trade made out of necessity, not desire. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-how-rafael-devers-trade-puts-new-spotlight-jaylen-brown-future">All eyes are on Boston</a>, which needs to cut its payroll in order to avoid the second apron and put themselves in position to rebound into contention when Jayson Tatum returns. That being said, their return is far less than they would have liked.</p><p>Georges Niang can play off of Joe Mazzulla’s bench, but doesn’t come close to replacing Porzingis’ absence. If there wasn’t enough already, this move puts even more pressure on Al Horford to hold down the middle of the Celtics’ defense. The 39-year-old might be the last rotational big left on Boston’s roster next season if they don’t retain Luke Kornet.</p><p>At the end of the day, Boston’s moves to add Holiday and Porzingis had the desired result. The Celtics won a title behind one of the most dominant starting fives in modern NBA history. Reports indicate that he’s heading to the Atlanta Hawks in part of a three-team deal.</p><p>The Hawks are acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics in a <a href="https://x.com/brettsiegelnba/status/1937644543907692597" rel="noopener">trade that includes</a> the Brooklyn Nets, according to insider Brett Siegel. Porzingis will now play alongside star guard Trae Young, giving Atlanta a new weapon for next season.</p><p>“BREAKING: The Atlanta Hawks are acquiring Kristaps Porzingis from the Boston Celtics in a 3-team trade with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Clutch Points.”</p><p>Atlanta is receiving Kristaps Porzingis, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1937644320070467798" rel="noopener">along with a second-round pick</a>, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Nets receive Terance Mann and the No. 22 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, while the Celtics get Georges Niang and a second-round selection.</p><p>“BREAKING: Boston, Atlanta, and Brooklyn are finalizing a three-team trade that sends Kristaps Porzingis and a second-round pick to the Hawks, Terance Mann and Atlanta’s No. 22 pick to the Nets, and Georges Niang and a second-rounder to the Celtics.”</p><p>This trade comes just a day <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/sources-implications-celtics-blazers-trade-jrue-holiday-anfernee-simons">after the Celtics had already dealt</a> Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Hawks become the next team to acquire another Boston star, as the Celtics are seemingly making big changes with Jayson Tatum expected to miss the entire season next year.</p><p>For Atlanta, the Hawks bring in a big man who can help stretch the floor as well. When healthy, Kristaps Porzingis is one of the most electric players in the league. However, his health is a bit of a concern. During his two seasons with Boston, Porzingis missed 65 total games out of a possible 164.</p><p>So, the Hawks will hope for a healthy Porzingis in Atlanta. This move is a bit stunning because the Blazers are the team that acquired Holiday for Damian Lillard two offseasons ago. Then, they flipped him to Boston. Jayson Tatum’s brutal injury shifted the course of the short-term future which will set them back a bit. The Celtics and Lakers are likely not going to agree on a trade, any time soon. The Bulls are in possession of the 12th overall pick, but there have been some rumors about Chicago trading up for a higher spot. We’ll have to wait and see how it plays out. Speaking of rumors, there has also been a lot of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-bulls-showed-jonathan-kuminga-interest-in-prior-star-trade-talks">talk about the Bulls being involved in other trades</a>. All in all, it’s shaping up to be a busy offseason.</p><p>One player to watch in terms of a Bulls trade is Golden State Warriors PF Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga to the Bulls has been a hot topic of discussion as of late, and it continues to look like Chicago’s big splash this offseason <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/inside-the-celtics-first-big-trade?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=166730327&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">could involve him</a>.</p><p>“We reported over the weekend that the Bulls are weighing a run at restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga by way of sign-and-trade talks with Golden State,” Jake Fischer said in a report. “There have been some fresh whispers since then about the Bulls angling to trade up from their No. 12 spot in Wednesday’s draft in pursuit of size.”</p><p>ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel also recently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-draft-big-board-4-0-ace-bailey-vj-edgecombe-questions-latest-intel">reported on the possibility of the Bulls trading up</a> to potentially take Ace Bailey:</p><p>“Multiple sources have also relayed intel about Chicago exploring the possibility of moving up in this year’s draft should Bailey be passed on by the 76ers, or another team that trades up, with the third pick,” Siegel said. “How the Bulls could possibly move up from the 12th pick to have a chance at selecting Bailey would be the ultimate question should the Rutgers star fall in the top five.”</p><p>Another big that has been mentioned as a target for the Bulls is Kristaps Porzingis. While the Bulls are looking to add some size and potentially trade away Nikola Vucevic, Fischer hasn’t heard anything about the team pursuing Porzingis.</p><p>“The Bulls are not currently chasing Porziņģis, league sources say, although some rival teams have been openly wondering if they might,” Fischer added. “Chicago is known, at the very least, to be evaluating the overall state of its center rotation with Nikola Vučević, after a strong season, having been pursued as a trade target since last February’s in-season trade deadline and now, at 34, entering the final season of his contract at $21.5 million.”</p><p>Nikola Vucevic seems to be the most likely trade candidate for the Bulls this offseason given his age and current value. The fact that the Warriors could use a veteran big with his skillset only amplifies the Jonathan Kuminga chatter.</p><p>A big offseason for the Bulls is underway, and we are close to seeing the dominos start to fall. He names Daniel Gafford and Nic Claxton as possible options, but it sounds like Los Angeles is more likely to go a different route at the center position.</p><p>“The talk at the start of the Lakers’ offseason was that Dallas’ Daniel Gafford and Brooklyn’s Nic Claxton were the two players who made the most sense.
