I don’t mean to throw shots at anybody. … But they look like a better team without Garland on the floor,” Anderson told reporters. “Now I don’t know the numbers or anything, but I think it played more into their favor once Garland wasn’t on the floor. They were able to dictate the tempo and get more stops on defense, it’s harder for us to score.”</p><p>The numbers gave his comment some teeth. The Cavs, without All-Star point guard Darius Garland for the final two games due to a lingering big toe sprain, clamped down defensively. With Garland on the court, Cleveland had a defensive rating of 119.8. Without him, that number dropped to a suffocating 93.3. Miami never scored more than 89 points again.</p><p>But don’t try telling the Cavs that they’re better off without their starting point guard.</p><p>“I don’t listen to that,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said. “I think we’re better with our All-Star point guard, personally.”</p><p>Atkinson has seen the speculation. He’s heard the chatter. He just doesn’t believe in it. Nor do Garland’s teammates.</p><p>“He’s huge,” Hunter said of Garland. “He scores. He facilitates. I think he stepped it up on the defensive end from what I watched this year as well. He’s a leader on this team. He’s a vocal guy. I love playing with him.</p><p>“We need him back for sure.”</p><h2><b>The Cavs’ depth has stepped up in Darius Garland’s absence</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Darius-Garland-dribbles-Cavs-Heat.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Cavs are hoping they’ll have Garland when their second-round series against the Indiana Pacers. Garland remains day-to-day with a sprained big toe, an injury he’s been battling since the end of the regular season and one Atkinson called “tricky.”</p><p>“The toe’s a tough one,” Atkinson said. “There’s pain and all that. But the good thing when we watch him shooting right now, he’s moving well.”</p><p>Garland has not progressed to contact drills and is officially day-to-day leading up to Game 1.</p><p>It’s a frustrating situation for both Garland and the team. He was off to a strong start against the Heat, scoring 27 and 21 points in the first two games. But after tweaking the toe again, the decision was made to sit him. The Cavs didn’t blink.</p><p>Ty Jerome and Sam Merrill filled in admirably. Max Strus and Jarrett Allen elevated their play. Evan Mobley continued his two-way evolution. And, as always, Donovan Mitchell led with poise and purpose.</p><p>It was a showcase of depth, not an indictment of Garland.</p><p>“It shows our depth,” Hunter explained. “We have a lot of guys that could play, even dudes that don’t play at all, and they can come in and contribute. D.G. is a big part of this team, and obviously you can’t make up what he does with just one player, so we had to come together as a team and try to pick up that slack.”</p><p>Indeed, that’s what these Cavs have become known for. Not one star. Not two. A balanced, cohesive group that won 64 games with contributions across the board. Seven different Cavs, including Garland, scored in double figures during the sweep.</p><h2><b>Darius Garland helped Cleveland adjust to Miami’s pressure</b></h2><p>Still, Garland was at the center of Miami’s frustrations before he exited the series. After Game 2, he made headlines for pointing out Miami’s defensive weak links, suggesting the Cavs’ strategy was to “pick on” Tyler Herro and others. That drew a response from Herro and from Bam Adebayo, who took shots at Garland’s defense in return.</p><p>Technically, everyone had a point.</p><p>Garland was being targeted. Opponents shot 12-of-18 against him as the primary defender, per NBA.com’s matchup tracking. But to say the Cavs are better without him is to ignore the adjustments they made defensively, the natural evolution of a playoff series, and the sheer gap in talent between Cleveland and the overwhelmed eighth-seeded Heat.</p><p>“I think we started figuring some things out,” Atkinson explained. “Remember, earlier we were having a problem with Davion Mitchell getting downhill. We kind of adjusted to putting a bigger player on him. How we were playing Bam in the pick-and-roll. That was another one. Started to jam him more, so he didn’t get that pocket pass.”</p><p>Donovan Mitchell echoed that.</p><p>“I think as you go through a series, you learn more and more about tendencies,” Mitchell added. “You saw last year, the same way we played in Game 1 was not the same way we played in Game 7, because at that point, you know everything they’re running, you know where they want to go. As the series progresses, naturally, you’re going to be better just because you’ve seen the same team.”</p><p>What happens next will be a different test altogether.</p><p>Indiana brings a different kind of challenge, especially with the electric Tyrese Haliburton running the show. The Cavaliers know they’ll need point-of-attack defenders, smart switches, and sustained pressure. Atkinson hasn’t decided on a starting lineup if Garland can’t go. Merrill was the plug-in starter against Miami, but against Indiana, a more defensive-minded option could be on the table.</p><p>That decision is for another day. For now, all eyes are on Garland, and all ears are tired of the narrative. No, the Cavs don’t believe they’re better without him. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Miami Heat</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Recently, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heats-erik-spoelstra-sums-up-jimmy-butler-drama-led-season-with-embarrassment-take">Miami Heat were</a> on the wrong end of the most lopsided playoff series in NBA history, being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-bam-adebayo-reveals-how-captain-status-made-cavs-sweep-harder-to-stomach">outscored by the Cleveland Cavaliers</a> by 122 points in their four-game sweep. Miami had previously become the first tenth seed ever to backdoor their way into the playoffs via the play-in tournament, and they looked every bit the part during the disastrous series vs Cleveland.</p><p>One player who didn’t see much action during the Cavs vs Heat series was Kyle Anderson, who played a major role in Miami’s final play-in win over the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>During his exit interview on Wednesday, Anderson <a href="https://x.com/HeatCulture13/status/1917635041665880394" rel="noopener">took a shot</a> at Cavaliers guard Darius Garland, who missed the two contests in Miami.</p><p>“If you want my honest answer… they look like a better team without Garland on the floor. I think it played more to their favor once Garland wasn’t on the floor,” said Anderson when asked why the Heat looked so much worse in Games 3 and 4 as opposed to the first two games, via Heat Culture on X.</p><p>The Cavs indeed look much more dominant in the two games without Garland on the floor, though that by no means should indicate they are a better team without him. After winning at least 56 games for just the second time in team history, Anthony Edwards led them on a journey to their second-ever appearance in the Western Conference Finals. At some point, all good things come to an end, and the Timberwolves <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-most-to-blame-for-brutal-game-5-loss-to-mavericks">ran into problems with the Dallas Mavericks</a>, who took Minnesota out in five games to advance to the 2024 NBA Finals. Now, the Timberwolves embark on an offseason full of question marks regarding what their roster will look like heading into the 2024-25 season. One of these big questions revolves around Kyle Anderson and his future with the franchise.</p><p>Anderson has been in Minnesota each of the last two seasons, proving to be a terrific two-way player who helps provide stability coming off the bench. While they would more than likely want to keep him this offseason, the Timberwolves are going to need to make some tough financial decisions that could involve letting Anderson walk in free agency.</p><p>At his end-of-season press conference on Friday, Anderson spoke about his time with the Timberwolves and <a href="https://youtu.be/k7nKIKdxKSY?si=ZI9HJ29WAiFT0zV9" rel="noopener">what is to come</a> as he becomes a free agent.</p><p>“I haven’t had conversations [about] what team I’ll be with next season,” Anderson responded when asked about if he has given thought to what the future holds for him. “I kind of want to give all of my focus and energy towards the season right now and the Minnesota Timberwolves. For the Timberwolves, their first order of business will begin in free agency with Anderson.</p><p>As he gets ready to become an unrestricted free agent, Anderson could be pursued by several teams around the league, given his two-way presence on the wing. Add Jaden McDaniels’ contract to the equation, and the Timberwolves already exceed $150 million in total payroll between the four players. This essentially means that Minnesota will be forced to fill out the rest of their roster with minimum contract-like players since Naz Reid and Mike Conley combine for over $20 million in salary as well.</p><p>As things currently stand, the Timberwolves are projected to be over the second tax apron for the 2024-25 season.</p><p>This is the main reason why Anderson returning to Minnesota is not a forgone conclusion. Sure, he is not the best player on the team, but Minnesota understands how important Anderson is to their success.</p><p>He is also a veteran. His experience is something that will only help matters for Minnesota.</p><p>Anderson made his NBA debut in 2014-15 with the San Antonio Spurs. In 2018-19 , Anderson joined the Memphis Grizzlies. With San Antonio and Memphis, Anderson established himself as a capable role player who could impact the game in multiple ways.</p><p>And he has continued to build upon that reputation since making his debut with the Timberwolves in 2023-23.</p><p>In the end, Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns will lead the way for the Timberwolves. Beal’s right leg made contact with Anderson’s right midsection when he was airborne, causing the latter to immediately grab at his side in pain before hobbling to the sideline. Adding insult to injury for Anderson and the Wolves, Beal completed an and-1, too.</p><p>Anderson was initially listed as questionable to return due to a <a href="https://twitter.com/Twolves_PR/status/1781782497358962766">right hip pointer</a>. But he’s 6’8 with a 7’3 wingspan and has some of the most disruptive hands in basketball, making him a solid option checking star forwards in isolation. Durant does most of his damage with size and length instead of off-dribble burst at this point of his career, too, all the more reason that Anderson is Minnesota’s best option defending him behind Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels.</p><p>As this series continues, don’t be surprised if the Timberwolves lean into lineups featuring Anderson at power forward against Phoenix should they struggle to string together stops. Anderson isn’t an imminently threatening three-point shooter like Towns and Reid, but he’s a natural playmaker, smart cutter and opportunistic scorer off the bounce from short mid-range.</p><p>Coupled with his prowess as a primary <i>and </i>help defender, those attributes could ensure Anderson plays an outsized role in what could be the most exciting series of the first round—health provided, of course. The naturalization became official, and now he will suit up for Team China once the FIBA World Cup begins.</p><p>Anderson’s citizenship got finalized, and his great-grandfather was a Chinese national from the area of Shenzhen, making things a bit easier to get done in time.</p><p>Anderson just finished up his first season with the Timberwolves after coming over from the Memphis Grizzlies. This past year, he averaged 9.4 PPG with 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists and played more than 28 minutes per context. According to the latest <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2023-04-24_07PM.pdf" rel="noopener">injury report</a> released by the NBA, Timberwolves power <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-rudy-gobert-breaks-silence-kyle-anderson-beef" rel="noopener">forward Kyle Anderson</a> is out for Tuesday night’s game at Ball Arena because of a left-eye injury.</p><p>Kyle Anderson was not able to finish <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/minnesota-timberwolves-3-bold-predictions-for-game-4-vs-nuggets" rel="noopener">Game 4</a> of the series after he got inadvertently hit in the face by teammate Anthony Edwards in the fourth quarter. Before he exited, Anderson had posted 11 points, five assists, six rebounds, two steals, and a block while shooting 5-for-7 from the field in 22 minutes coming off the bench. He also ended up with a plus/minus of plus-8, tied for the highest among Timberwolves players.</p><p>Kyle Anderson’s absence for Game 5 is a significant blow to the Timberwolves, who are already missing Jaden McDaniels because of a fracture in his right hand and Naz Reid because of a left scaphoid issue. Meanwhile, Jaylen NBowell is labeled questionable ahead of Game 5.</p><p>So far in the first round, Kyle Anderson is carrying averages of 8.5 points on 50 percent shooting from the field, 4.0 rebounds,, 4.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks. He is not posting scintillating numbers against the Nuggets but he’s chipping in a little bit of everything for the Timberwolves, who are just a loss away from elimination.</p><p>With Anderson out, the Timberwolves will likely have to give more minutes to Taurean Prince and add more to the plate of Edwards, Rudy Gobert, and Karl-Anthony Towns.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

We just gotta flip that switch. We’re totally capable and things should go our way next game. Definitely.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The in-game altercation between <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-charles-barkley-clowns-rudy-gobert-vs-lakers" rel="noopener">Rudy Gobert</a> and Kyle Anderson could not have come at a worse time for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-timberwolves-anthony-davis-play-in-plan-per-chris-finch" rel="noopener">Minnesota Timberwolves</a>. The fight went down during their last game of the regular season, which has now led to Gobert getting suspended for Tuesday’s all-important Play-In clash against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. I think we went in the direction of getting closer.”</p><p>Conley is clearly taking a glass-half-full approach here as he spills on the aftermath of the unsavory Gobert-Anderson incident. You would expect nothing less from a tenured veteran, and honestly, Conley wouldn’t have come out and admitted that there’s a major divide in the locker room because of this incident even if it were true. At this point, we’ll just have to take his word for it.</p><p>Everything will be put to the test on Tuesday when the Timberwolves take to the court against a surging and fully healthy Lakers side. That happens all the time in sports. I feel like people are acting like they’ve never seen it before,” Anderson told reporters on Tuesday monring, per Chris Hine of the Star Tribune. “We’re grown men. We’re able to put it behind us. We both want to win. We spoke about it that night and just seeing how everything is playing out is kind of lame, honestly. We’re teammates at the end of the day. I don’t want it to be a Kyle vs. Rudy thing. That’s never the case. I always got my teammates’ back, and we moved on.”</p><p>Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, those mended fences won’t make Gobert available for Tuesday night’s clash with the Los Angeles Lakers. With Gobert and Anderson arguing while on the sideline in their win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, Gobert took things to another level when he threw a punch at Anderson. The two were quickly separated, but by then, the damage was already done.</p><p>Now, with a chance to earn the seven seed and officially make the playoffs, Minnesota will be without one of their top players in Gobert. The star center has had a rocky first season with the Timberwolves, and this will surely only add to his increasingly frustrating situation.</p><p>Either way, Rudy Gobert will return for Minnesota’s next game, whether they are playing in their second Play-In Tournament game, or if they advance to the playoffs as the seven seed.
