Although Kyrie would surely love to earn the award, being selected as a finalist is an honor. Mavs head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1907573230145052931" rel="noopener">reacted to</a> Irving’s accomplishment before Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>“For Kai to be in that category is great,” Kidd told reporters. “It’s well-deserved. It just shows what the players think about Kai and the impact that he has on and off the floor… Not just our guys wearing Anta but everyone else around the league starting to wear Anta, it just shows the belief, or the confidence that they have in Kai. It’s really cool to see him hopefully get that award… Hopefully he does get that award.”</p><p>Kidd is hopeful that Irving will win the award. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jarrett Allen, Jrue Holiday, Franz Wagner and Dorian Finney-Smith are the other five finalists.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-out-injury-torn-acl">Irving’s season is unfortunately already over</a>, as he suffered a torn ACL in March. The injury was a devastating blow for both Kyrie and the Mavs. Dallas is still looking to reach the postseason via the NBA Play-In Tournament, but making a deep playoff run will be difficult without Irving.</p><p>The good news is that Anthony Davis and Daniel Gafford recently returned from injuries, while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dereck-lively-ii-playing-mavericks-hawks-injury-report">Dereck Lively II is expected to return</a> for Wednesday night’s Hawks-Mavericks clash.</p><p>Will the Mavs clinch a postseason spot? It remains to be seen, but they won’t give up. There is no denying the fact that Irving’s presence has been missed on the floor in recent action.</p><p>As for the NBA Sportsmanship Award, players around the league will ultimately select which finalist will take home the Joe Dumars Trophy. This would lead to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-out-injury-torn-acl">Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving suffering from a torn ACL</a> among other players suffering severe injuries which led to Davis speaking about his star teammate’s injury.</p><p>While injuries are typical in the NBA and any sport, there is no doubt that Dallas has experienced extremely unfortunate circumstances. Davis would speak on seeing Irving’s injury, his emotions, and <a href="https://andscape.com/features/a-super-tight-bond-anthony-davis-trying-to-make-playoff-push-with-dallas-mavericks/" rel="noopener">speaking about the team’s luck</a> in itself in a recent interview with Marc J. Spears of AndScape.</p><p>“In basketball, man, s— happens,” Davis said. “[It’s] Kind of been going around the league, not even just the league but in sports in general, freakish injuries. I saw [Irving’s] play. Once he stepped in, he went down for a split second. The first thing I thought was, ‘Please, don’t let it be his ACL.’ And I went to go check on him, and he said it right then and there. I was like, ‘[expletive] .’ I could just tell how it was.”</p><p>“We went from that to Gaff [Gafford] with his knee, Ex [Exum] with his hand, and O-Max [Prosper] with his hand,” Davis continued. “Then you had B-Will [Brandon Williams] with his hammy and D-Live [Lively] already had his foot, J-Hardy [Jaden Hardy] with his ankle. Like f— man, we can’t catch the break, Caleb [Martin], with everything he got going on. PJ’s [Washington’s] ankle. The former Los Angeles Lakers power forward would further talk about Irving and speak about the communication with him since the season-ending injury.</p><p>“But in [Irving’s] instance, during that time, I let him have time to himself, his team, and everything,” Davis said. “And then obviously, I was in the back with him, gave him some space, and then once he did everything he needed to do, he came back to the locker room where I was at. And his whole mood was just different as far as he was like, ‘Hey listen, ain’t nothing I can do about it.’ His mindset went from ‘f—’ to let’s get ready to start this rehab process and get back. So that’s the opposite, tough injury, but I know he’s had some pretty significant injuries, the kneecap and everything, and he came back the same Kai.”</p><p>“So, it’s my job to hold the fort down the rest of the season and then go into next season with some of the offseason things that we’re pretty sure we’re going to do,” Davis continued. “Then, have him have his time to get back healthy, get back right, come in, and be Kyrie again.”</p><p>Dallas is currently 36-38 which puts them 10th in the Western Conference.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Dallas Mavericks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving has been feeling the love from the fans ever since<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-out-injury-torn-acl" rel="noopener"> he tore his ACL</a> on March 3 against the Sacramento Kings. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-sends-heartwarming-message-fans-amid-acl-injury" rel="noopener">Irving generously kept fans up to speed</a> about his condition. </p><p>On Wednesday, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-kyrie-irving-undergoes-successful-surgery-on-acl-tear" rel="noopener">Irving successfully underwent surgery</a> to repair his ACL at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. In response, fans flooded social media with messages of support and encouragement. He came to life after the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-mavericks-luka-doncic-anthony-davis-trade">Mavericks </a><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-mavericks-luka-doncic-anthony-davis-trade">unexpectedly traded Luka Doncic</a> to the Los Angeles Lakers. Irving averaged 26.5 points per game, 5.1 assists, and 5.1 rebounds since the trade. </p><p>While the fans were despondent following the trade, some going as far as <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/mavericks-raise-ticket-prices-after-luka-doncic-trade-citing-ongoing-investments-in-the-team-213630744.html#:~:text=More%20NBA%20news&amp;text=The%20Mavericks%20reportedly%20offered%20refunds,6%20record%20since%20trading%20Don%C4%8Di%C4%87." rel="noopener">cancelling their season tickets</a>, Irving made it a point to <a href="https://www.basketballnetwork.net/latest-news/kyrie-pleads-with-mavs-fans-to-move-on-from-the-luka-trade" rel="noopener">tell the fans to move pass it</a>. </p><p>“I don’t want anyone to play the blame game,” Doncic said.</p><p>Irving admitted it was an <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25174893-kyrie-irving-reflects-emotional-luka-doncic-lakers-trade-i-struggled-little" rel="noopener">emotional roller coaster</a> to play without Luka or play against him. </p><p>According to CBS Sports, the Mavericks had a <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/betting/news/how-kyrie-irvings-season-ending-injury-impacts-mavericks-odds-nba-futures/#:~:text=They%20had%20a%2037.8%25%20chance,chance%20to%20lift%20the%20trophy." rel="noopener">37.8% chance of making the playoffs</a> before Irving’s injury. Those chances have now slipped to 24.4%. </p><p>The Mavericks stand at 35-38 and have lost 12 out of their last 16 games since Irving’s absence. It is safe to say that the Mavericks will have an even greater uphill climb with the season entering its final stages. </p><p>In the post-Luka trade, Irving was their ultimate spark in terms of veteran leadership and commanding presence. Bryant <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e4HX-3lGU4" rel="noopener">tore his ACL on April 12, 2013</a> against the Golden State Warriors. But Bryant stayed in to shoot his free throw attempts, hitting both. Bryant eventually left the game and his season ended.</p><p>Irving’s moment occurred before the 12-year anniversary of that Bryant ACL shot. He’s since watched Dallas try to stay in the race for the Western Conference playoffs.</p><p>The Mavs sit at 35-38 overall and at 11th place in the conference standings. They’re 23-25 against the western franchises. Irving has received plenty of support following the injury, but a concerning narrative has surfaced as well.</p><p>After the Mavs traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis appeared in just over 30 minutes of a game before suffering an injury. AD has not played in a contest since. With a number of other Mavs injured as well, Irving played the most minutes per game of any player in the league for over a month.</p><p>When Irving went down with the ACL injury, some fans, and even media members, took the opportunity to create a narrative that Dallas over-played Irving which led to the injury. The narrative serves as an accusation of sorts. Blaming the Dallas Mavericks’ organization for a star player getting injured is something that should not be taken lightly.</p><p>Of course, many fans, and even the aforementioned media members, are still dealing with the frustration of the Doncic trade. Creating a narrative out of frustration with an organization is unfair, unless the narrative is based on nothing but factual evidence. Kyrie did not have to share this post, but his decision to do so is of the utmost importance for a Mavericks’ organization that needs some positive publicity at the moment.</p><h2><b>Kyrie Irving’s decision is crucial for Mavericks</b></h2><p>There are still likely going to be critics of the Mavs’ decision to play Irving over 38 minutes per game over the past few weeks before the injury. Sure, playing a veteran that many minutes who is going to be 33 years old soon is not exactly ideal. But this was seemingly a freak injury. Placing the blame on the Mavericks organization for Irving suffering a torn ACL on the aforementioned specific play against the Kings is unfair.</p><p>Again, the frustration of the 2024-25 season has likely led many to overlook the possibility of a freak injury in this scenario. Doncic was traded, AD is injured, the Quentin Grimes deal did not go according to plan. Frustration should not cloud judgement, though, especially from media members who are supposed to serve fans with nothing but the facts. As a reporter myself, I will trust Irving in this situation.</p><p>Kyrie Irving clearly heard the noise based on his comment on the Instagram Story. He knows the Mavs are receiving backlash at the moment. Irving also understands how narratives can grow out of control and turn into untrue but believed stories.</p><p>The Mavs should thank Irving for posting that story to Instagram. It will serve as a deciding factor in potential arguments about the injury narrative. Many fans believe that the trade initiated a cataclysmic sequence of events, one that includes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-news-kevin-durant-emotional-reaction-kyrie-irving-season-ending-injury">Kyrie Irving suffering a torn ACL</a> versus the Sacramento Kings on March 3.</p><p>A theory is floating around that the star point guard’s increased usage resulted in him sustaining the season-ending injury. He is <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1898423192273957122" rel="noopener">challenging that notion</a>, however.</p><p>“Too many minutes???” Irving posted on Instagram. “Or did I get knocked off balance?” Since the Mavs traded his backcourt mate Luka Doncic in February, the 32-year-old guard was averaging an NBA-high 39.3 minutes per contest (more than three minutes per game than he was previously playing). Fatigue can lead to body imbalance, but Irving is seemingly contending that he lost his footing because he was fouled while driving to the basket.</p><p>This stance echoes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-fires-back-narrative-kyrie-irving-injury">what Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said</a> after the devastating news broke. He called the injury a freak accident and rejected the idea that the minutes increase caused the incident. Though, the very fact that Irving is hurt so frequently does make one wonder why the Mavericks did not bring in someone to help ease his burden after they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-mark-cuban-reveals-glaring-issue-luka-doncic-trade">sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers</a>. Or, as many will argue, they could have just hung on to the Slovenian superstar in the first place.</p><p>There is no point in looking in the rear-view mirror anymore, however. Dallas will not be able to escape the criticism for as long as Doncic and LA are prospering, but the players must do their best to block out all the noise and focus on the task at hand.</p><p>Regardless of how bleak the future might currently seem, the fact remains that the Mavs still own the final NBA Play-In Tournament slot in the Western Conference. It would be extremely difficult to win two road games without the dynamic Kyrie Irving leading the way, but the squad still has a chance to sneak into the playoffs. And hope, however fleeting it may be, is something this fan base desperately needs.</p><p>The severely shorthanded Mavericks will try to end a four-game losing streak when it next faces the visiting Phoenix Suns, the team that currently sits two and a half games behind them for 10th place in the West. The injury was the latest in a series of unfortunate events that began when the team shockingly traded away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in early February.</p><p>Irving has received an outpouring of support from across the NBA world in the wake of his injury, and recently, the 32 year-old took to his account on X, formerly Twitter, to <a href="https://x.com/KyrieIrving/status/1897696661822201978" rel="noopener">share a quote</a> from the late Kobe Bryant to give some perspective.</p><p>“‘May you always remember to enjoy the road, especially when it’s a hard one.’ Black Mamba,” wrote Irving.</p><p>Irving had developed a close bond with Bryant during their time in the NBA together, and in many ways, the late superstar’s impact on Irving’s game can be seen in the way he plays.</p><p>Bryant always faced adversity with a strong mindset, which seems to be the approach that Irving is taking in the wake of his injury as well.</p><h2><b>A lost season for the Mavericks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Irving-is-helped-off.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Just over a month ago, things were looking optimistic for the Mavericks. The team was doing a solid job of holding down the fort during Luka Doncic’s injury, and they were making a habit out of defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder, the only team that was far ahead of them in the Western Conference standings.</p><p>Fast forward just over thirty days, however, and the Mavericks find themselves in arguably the worst position in the entire NBA. With the injury has come speculation that head coach Jason Kidd isn’t a fan.</p><p>For instance, one report suggested that Irving’s injury was because of his minutes. From the beginning of January to his injury, he was amongst the top in the league in minutes played.</p><p>While that might be a logical explanation, Kidd explained that the injury was a ‘freak accident.’ However, the head coach elaborated that <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44128699/kidd-irving-injury-freak-accident-not-result-big-minutes" rel="noopener">there’s more to the story</a>.</p><p>“We’re talking about one play,” Kidd said via Jamal Collier of ESPN. “Not many before that. This isn’t supposed to be a rest league.”</p><p>The rest league mantra that Kidd is referring to is one that many around the NBA have participated in. Load management has become <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/jan/22/nba-tv-ratings-changes-load-managment-three-pointers" rel="noopener">an increasing point of discussion</a>. As a result, some of the league’s best have rested when their record might say otherwise.</p><p>However, the Mavericks were teetering between a play-in and a playoff spot. When they had Luka Doncic, they were for certain a lock to make the playoffs.</p><h2><b>Jason Kidd feels the Mavericks after Kyrie Irving’s injury</b></h2><p>Without the Slovenian superstar, it forced Irving to play hero ball. Still, the latter was exceptional and truly put the franchise and the city on his back.</p><p>The Mavericks head coach acknowledged that. He also detailed the discrepancy there is with injury and playing time.</p><p>“Kai is our leader,” Kidd said. “Kai also was playing at a high level; maybe some of the best basketball he’s played in his career. We can’t talk from both sides and say our stars don’t play enough minutes and guys don’t play enough. They rest. But now we’re saying they play too much.”</p><p>There’s quite the juxtaposition with stars playing too many minutes and taking rest days. It feels that no matter how much or how little these players are on the court, there is always criticism.</p><p>Either way, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-kyrie-irving-jaden-hardy-injury">Mavericks have a long road ahead of them</a>. After they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks by 30 points on Wednesday, it might be the dagger that the team is waiting for.</p><p>A franchise-altering trade, mixed with losing Irving isn’t what anyone expected. There’s roughly a nine to 12-month window for his recovery. With over a month remaining in the NBA season, the Mavs can realistically end up in the conversation for the No. 1 pick based on their performance moving forward.</p><p>It goes without saying, but teams such as the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets lead the way as the top possible destinations for Flagg given their disappointing seasons. Washington currently holds the worst record in the NBA.</p><p>Still, anything can happen in the lottery. The worst team doesn’t always have the best luck. The Mavs’ record will ultimately go a long way toward determining their odds in the lottery. With a month to go and a plethora of injuries, however, anything truly can happen.</p><p>In all reality, the chances of the Mavericks ending up with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft are fairly slim, but nothing is out of the question.</p><h2><b>How would Cooper Flagg fit on the Mavericks’ roster?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Cooper-Flagg-during-Duke-game-in-2025.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>If Dallas does land the No. 1 pick and selects Flagg first overall, how would the Duke basketball star fit on the roster?</p><p>At 6’9″, Flagg offers versatility. He can run the wing as a shooting guard or small forward. If necessary, he can even play power forward. The 18-year-old features size and athleticism which will help him at the NBA level. He appears to be ready for the NBA.</p><p>The Mavericks lineup could realistically feature Kyrie Irving (once he returns from his torn ACL), Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively II and Flagg. If the Mavs wanted to go smaller, they could move AD to center and play PJ Washington alongside Irving, Thompson, and Flagg.</p><p>Drafting Cooper Flagg would allow Mavs head coach Jason Kidd to be more creative with his lineups. Flagg’s fit would be almost perfect with the Mavericks, but it remains to be seen if Dallas will emerge as a serious contender for the 2025 NBA Draft No. 1 overall pick.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
