The two have clashed for years, their personalities and principles often at odds. But in a rare turn of humility, the First Take host is now walking back some of his harshest words about the Dallas Mavericks star.</p><p>During the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, Smith <a href="https://www.nj.com/sports/2025/10/espns-stephen-a-smith-applauds-nba-players-covid-stance-we-see-all-the-conspiracy-theories-props-to-him.html" rel="noopener">admitted he might have gone too far</a> when criticizing Irving during his tumultuous Brooklyn Nets stint, particularly around the guard’s decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine, NJ reports. “Kyrie’s a good brother. We used to butt heads because he used to miss work too damn much,” Smith said. “And I’m like, yo man, this brother’s electrifying, I want to see this brother dancing on the basketball court. I don’t want to hear no sh*t about no COVID vaccines. Get your a** on the court. We see you. Now, obviously in hindsight, the brother’s right because we see all the conspiracy theories that came out. And props to him for having the foresight to see that. We didn’t see that at the time.”</p><p>Smith didn’t specify what “conspiracy theories” he was referring to, but his comments suggest a new level of empathy toward Irving’s perspective. It’s a striking reversal from his earlier stance, when he accused Irving of arrogance and selfishness for defying team and league protocols.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><h2><b>From Villain to Vindicated</b></h2><p>When Irving refused the vaccine during his Nets tenure, the move sidelined him for much of the 2021–22 season and made him a lightning rod for criticism. Smith led that charge, publicly blasting the guard for “letting down” teammates and fans. But in the years since, Irving has rebuilt both his image and his career. His resurgence with Dallas, capped by a trip to the 2024 NBA Finals, reminded everyone just how special he is when he’s locked in.</p><p>The conversation now reflects something deeper: a recognition that players, even polarizing ones, have the right to stand by their beliefs. While Smith’s claim that Irving was “right” may not align with medical consensus, the CDC and FDA still recommend the vaccine for most adults, it shows how public opinion can evolve once emotions settle.</p><p>At its core, Smith’s comments seem less about the science and more about understanding. He’s acknowledging that while he and much of the sports world painted Irving as a villain, the guard’s stance came from personal conviction, not malice. The only problem at the time was fitting Westbrook into the deal, which was a move that the Brooklyn Nets weren’t interested in making at the time. Ahead of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-lebron-james-stat-projection-basketball-reference">James’ 23rd NBA season in 2025-26</a>, he’s still chasing his second championship with the Lakers.</p><p>James was interested in swapping Westbrook, his Lakers teammate at the time, for Irving, which got back to Russell. It’s what led to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-the-bothering-truth-behind-russell-westbrook-snubbing-lebron-james-in-sl-revealed" rel="noopener">an awkward noninteraction between James and Westbrook</a> at a Summer League game in July, per Yaron Weitzman.</p><p>“The scene became the talk of the night. Side-by-side images contrasting how LeBron and Westbrook had interacted at summer league the previous year—they’d entered the building together and sat next to each other—made the rounds on social media. The noninteraction was red meat for talking heads. It also sparked concerns within the team’s new coaching staff,” Weitzman wrote.</p><p>“We knew that we’d have to bring Westbrook off the bench eventually because things weren’t a good fit,” a Lakers coach said. “But seeing that play out that night it was like, ‘Oh, these mother******* aren’t even talking to each other.’”</p><p>Irving was entering the final year of his contract, a player option worth $36.9 million, and wanted an extenstion, which the Nets were not willing to do given Irving missed chunks of the regular season, and refused to get a COVID vaccine. He was also suspended for promoting an antisemetic documentary on social media. Brooklyn was not willing to extend his deal. Therefore, Kyrie asked for a trade, with the Lakers mentioned as one of his preferred destinations.</p><p>However, it didn’t get him any closer to LeBron and the Lakers.</p><h2><b>Nets, Lakers reportedly discussed a Kyrie Irving trade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lakers-LeBron-James-Russell-Westbrook.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Gray-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Lakers never came close to poaching Irving from the Nets in exchange for Russell Westbrook. The trade attempt also fractured Lakers All-Star LeBron James’ relationship with Westbrook.</p><p>“Negotiations between the Lakers and Nets went nowhere. Pelinka never showed any real interest in Irving. And even if he had, the Nets had no desire to take Westbrook back,” Weitzman wrote. “Irving picked up his option and remained in Brooklyn, but by then the damage was done. Because of the NBA’s salary-matching rules, the only way for the Lakers to acquire Irving would have been by dealing Westbrook.</p><p>“Westbrook knew this, and he knew that LeBron did as well. Irving suffered the ACL injury back in March and was out for the rest of the season. The Mavericks ended up rallying to make the play-in, defeating the Sacramento Kings in the opening round, before falling to the Memphis Grizzlies.</p><p>Irving currently does not have a concrete timetable for his return, and at the start of training camp, Mavericks head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-bad-reporting-kyrie-irving-injury">Jason Kidd slammed an erroneous report that suggested Irving</a> was ahead of schedule in his recovery.</p><p>The nine-time All-Star was originally acquired by the Mavericks via the traded deadline during the 2022-23 season. Although the team failed to to make the playoffs upon his arrival, Irving played a major role during the Mavericks’ 2023-24 run to the NBA Finals.</p><p>Before the injury last season, Irving had appeared in 50 games for the Mavericks at a little over 36 minutes per game. He had been averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 47.3 percent shooting from the field, 40.1 percent shooting from the three-point line and 91.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>The Mavericks will open the 2025-26 season on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at home against the San Antonio Spurs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Last season’s 39-43 record only earned them a place in the play-in, where the Memphis Grizzlies eventually knocked them out in the absence of Kyrie Irving.</p><p>The nine-time All-Star’s season had ended long back in March, when he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. Irving suffered a torn kneecap back during the 2015 NBA Finals and has since had regular trouble with his left knee.</p><p>With no clear return timeline as things stand, the Mavericks have made multiple moves in the offseason, headlined by the arrival of Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 pick of the 2025 draft. All signs point to them still having the personnel to compete with the best in the West.</p><p>Add to that the fact that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irvings-immediate-training-camp-move-will-excite-fans">Kyrie is expected to return in time for the postseason</a>, and there is considerable room for things to get interesting.</p><h2>Kyrie Irving will return to become the Mavs’ best player</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Mavericks-Kyrie-Irving-Mavericks-Anthony-Davis.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Historically speaking, Irving has always returned from major absences to shut down critics in glorious fashion. What he brings to the court has never been in doubt, and his numbers post-return have always been at his usual levels.</p><p>At the time of his injury last season, Irving was the only player in the NBA who averaged at least 20 points while shooting at least 40% from the three-point line and 90% from the free-throw line.</p><p>“Kyrie is the heart and soul of this team, and he has embraced the city of Dallas as his home and our fans as an extension of his own family,” the Mavericks GM Nico Harrison <a href="https://www.espn.in/nba/story/_/id/44107102/sources-mavericks-kyrie-irving-torn-acl-rest-season" rel="noopener">had said at the time,</a> per ESPN.</p><p>And while doubts are bound to linger considering it is another major injury, the Mavs are still set up as a Kyrie team. They added D’Angelo Russell as a free agent to cope with his absence, but will still rely on his ball-handling and playmaking to get the best out of their other stars, Cooper Flagg included.</p><p>His absence last season immediately resulted in the Mavs’ title odds dropping from 66-1 to 200-1. While the front office has made multiple moves, the Mavs only look like a top Western Conference team with Kyrie leading the charge.</p><h2>The Mavericks will exceed expectations next season</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Cooper-Flagg-during-Media-Day.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-USA TODAY</figcaption></figure><p>On paper, when Dallas have all of their players available, they look capable of competing with any team in the NBA. Their frontcourt consists of Anthony Davis, Derrick Lively II and Daniel Gafford, while their backcourt depth boasts of Kyrie, Klay Thompson and D’Angelo Russell. Add to that a combo forward potentially capable of doing it all in Cooper Flagg and a strong bench unit, and the Mavs only have injuries to worry about.</p><p>We expect Kyrie Irving to make a strong return to the team, which should result in the Mavs exceeding expectations and going on a surprise postseason run that gives some of the best teams a run for their money. The obvious concern, the fact that two of their best players in AD and Kyrie are prone to injuries, remains.</p><p>However, despite the difference in timelines between Cooper Flagg and the superstars that surround him, there is no reason why a fit and firing Mavericks roster cannot push for postseason success.</p><h2>The Mavericks will rebuild with Kyrie at the helm</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Mavericks-guard-Kyrie-Irving.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Irving is a future HOF superstar who has done it all. Add to that his basketball IQ, and Irving seems to be the ideal mentor for Cooper Flagg as he begins life in the NBA.</p><p>“His work ethic and absolute dedication to his craft, it’s cut from the cloth of greats. The Mavericks have so much frontcourt depth that all they need is some quality backcourt play to get them back to playoff contention. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-surprising-admission-future-retirement">Kyrie Irving out until perhaps January</a>, the onus will be on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dangelo-russell-kyrie-irving-jason-kidd">D’Angelo Russell to hold the fort</a> in the meantime.</p><p>But it looks like Irving is closer to returning than one would expect. Irving was not just present for the Mavericks’ Media Day session on Monday, he was also in attendance for their first day of training camp. As much as Dallas can overwhelm the opposition with their size and defensive prowess, they might have a hard time generating enough point from the perimeter for it to matter if they don’t get Irving back to full strength.</p><p>But it is definitely a very good sign that Irving is back out with his teammates on the court. Sure, they got Cooper Flagg after they missed the playoffs when the injury bug ravaged the entire team towards the end of the 2024-25 season, but it’s still befuddling that they traded away one of the five-best players in the league without even drumming up a bidding war.</p><p>But now, the Mavericks, despite putting the Doncic era in the rearview mirror, have reasons to be hopeful for the future. They have a stout defensive core that can match up with any team in the league, and a star duo of Irving and Anthony Davis, while it would have been much better five years ago, isn’t very shabby anyway.</p><p>The hope, of course, is that Irving returns to superstar form when he’s back out on the court, which is not a guarantee considering he’s a small guard coming off a torn ACL.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In Rose’s prime, he was the youngest MVP! If D.
