However, second-year wing Kyshawn George once again showed why he’s one of the most <a href="https://x.com/WizPRStats/status/1992442093944586717" rel="noopener">important pieces of their rebuild</a> in Saturday’s 121-120 loss to the Chicago Bulls (9-7), per Wizards PR.</p><p>“Kyshawn George is the youngest of six players across the league this season, and just the second Wizard since 2012 to record 15+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and 4+ steals in a game (Russell Westbrook, Apr. 14, 2021),” the team reported.</p><p>George finished with 17 points (5-14 FG, 1-3 3-point), 12 rebounds, seven assists, and four steals over 36 minutes. The 21-year-old led Washington in rebounds, assists, and steals, but also led with four turnovers.</p><p>George’s outing ended with a missed shot and a turnover when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/chicago-bulls/bulls-news-nikola-vucevic-satisfied-win-wizards">Wizards were down by one point</a> over the final 30 seconds, but his two-way effectiveness helped them have a chance to win at the end in the first place. While the former Miami Hurricane almost quadruped his season average in steals (1.1) during the game, the rest of his numbers were in line with his usual output.</p><p>George is second on the team this year with 16.5 points per game on 48.4 percent shooting (44 percent 3-point) and 6.3 rebounds while leading in assists (4.9), steals, and turnovers (3.5). The high turnover rate is a product of his on-ball reps, as Washington has been running sets with the Swiss-Canadian international at point guard due to the roster not having a soldified player in that role.</p><p>The organization wanted second-year guard Bub Carrington to become the lead guard this season, but that hasn’t gone well. The 20-year-old is averaging 6.3 points on just 34.3 percent shooting (44.7 percent 3-point) with 3.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists against 2.3 turnovers over 25.4 minutes. He’s scored double-digit points in only three of his 16 games and is third-to-last on the team with a <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?TeamID=1610612764&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=NET_RATING" rel="noopener">-24.1 net rating</a>, per NBA.com.</p><p>Carrington was better as a rookie last season when he played in his natural position as a combo guard. The former Pittsburgh Panther had a 5.8 percent higher field goal clip despite averaging 2.7 more attempts, and his assist-to-turnover ratio was higher by 0.81.</p><p>Carrington’s struggles at point are partially why the Wizards are trying George in that role, but that also limits the latter player’s catch-and-shoot opportunities. This will likely be a problem for the rest of the season unless Carrington improves, so they must live with George’s high turnover rate considering his effectiveness in everything else.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/why-alex-sarr-wizards-fans-excitement-kyshawn-george-2">George and second-year center Alex Sarr</a> have been Washington’s best players this season, which shows that the rebuild is on track despite the win-loss record. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-cam-whitmore-bright-future-admission">third-year forward Cam Whitmore’s</a> ascension cannot be ignored either.</p><h2><b>Wizards may look like geniuses for Cam Whitmore trade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Cam-Whitmore.jpg"><figcaption>Erik Williams-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-acquiring-cam-whitmore-in-trade-with-rockets">Whitmore, who Washington acquired from the Houston Rockets</a> for two second-round picks over the summer, tied with veteran guard Corey Kispert for the team lead with 20 points (7-10 FG, 2-4 3-point) over just 18 minutes off the bench. The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder added seven rebounds and two assists while tying with Carrington for second on the team in plus/minus (plus-four).</p><p>Whitmore has now shot at least 50 percent from the field in six of his last seven games and scored 19-plus points in three of them. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-why-rockets-traded-cam-whitmore-wizards-over-other-offers">former Houston Rocket</a> finished with just two points (1-3 FG, 0-1 3-point), one rebound, and two turnovers across 11 minutes.</p><p>That’s not what the Wizards envisioned when they traded for Whitmore in July, but second-year wing Kyshawn George explained how they can <a href="https://x.com/joshvaldez100/status/1985012634899361895" rel="noopener">utilize his talent</a> after Saturday’s 125-94 loss to the Orlando Magic.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">I asked Kyshawn George last night what Cam Whitmore adds to the offense:</p><p>“His physicality. He adds another weapon…”</p><p>To George’s point, the one time Whitmore scored on Monday was when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-alex-sarr-bub-carrington-franchise-history-all-rookie">second-year guard Bub Carrington</a> fed him a lob on a cut to the basket in transition that resulted in an alley-oop slam with 1:21 left in the third quarter. The play can be found <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwvG5X6qkc8" rel="noopener">starting at 11:46</a> in the following YouTube highlight video.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>George also lobbed a pass to Whitmore from just inside the three-point line on a fast break in the first quarter of Washington’s 139-134 overtime loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 28, which the <a href="https://x.com/WashWizards/status/1983318044836544689" rel="noopener">latter player finished</a> with an emphatic one-handed dunk. Those are just two examples of his speed and athleticism paying off around the rim, but he has yet to score more than 14 points in a game this season and has scored 10-plus only twice.</p><p>Part of that is because Whitmore ranks ninth on the team with 15.9 minutes per contest as he adjusts to his new squad. The former Villanova Wildcat has to compete for playing time in a crowded rotation, but he also hasn’t made the most of his time on the floor yet.</p><p>For example, head coach Brian Keefe called a timeout and yelled at Whitmore after he missed a stepback three on the previous possession during the Wizards’ 117-107 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 24. Keefe was also upset when the 21-year-old <a href="https://x.com/GregFinberg/status/1985515946577154490" rel="noopener">turned the ball</a> over after driving into a crowd of Knicks players in transition on Monday.</p><p>However, the second-year coach also complimented Whitmore after the Magic game, when he scored eight points (3-7 FG, 2-3 3-point) with two rebounds and two steals in 16 minutes.</p><p>“I thought he was one of the guys that created energy tonight and did a good job defensively on some of their guys,” Keefe told ClutchPoints. “He was attacking the rim. I was really pleased with him.”</p><p>If Whitmore gives effort defensively, limits turnovers, and takes shots within the flow of the offense moving forward, he should get more minutes. But the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder must do those things consistently to stand out on a young core with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/why-alex-sarr-wizards-fans-excitement-kyshawn-george-2">George (17.9 points per game), second-year center Alex Sarr</a> (17.3 PPG), and rookie guard Tre Johnson (12.3 PPG) all establishing themselves as building blocks so far.</p><p>Whitmore’s size and explosiveness going downhill are why the Rockets drafted him No. 20 overall in 2023, but the team considered him expendable after adding future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant to a core of 2025 All-Star big man Alperen Sengun, 2025 All-Defensive First Team guard Amen Thompson, and 2023 All-Rookie Second Team forward Jabari Smith Jr.. Now that he’s on a squad focused on developing young players instead of contending, there’s no excuse for him not to prove himself. His fate depends on his ability to listen to the coaching staff and adjust accordingly, as well as his teammates feeding him when he finds space on cuts to the basket.</p><h2><b>CJ McCollum gives Tre Johnson flowers</b></h2><p>Meanwhile, Johnson is having no trouble doing what he was known best for as a prospect: scoring the basketball. The No. 6 overall pick has notched double-digit points in six of seven games thus far and is shooting 35.7 percent from deep, which is <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/leaders?StatCategory=FG3_PCT&amp;PerMode=Totals&amp;Scope=Rookies" rel="noopener">tied for ninth among rookies</a> while ranking third with 15 total attempts made, per NBA.com. The former Miami Hurricane was one of Washington’s three first-round rookies entering last season, but he was the only one not selected in the lottery. Now, he might be the best piece of the young core.</p><p>George doesn’t have Bilal Coulibaly’s perimeter defensive skills, Sarr’s rim-protection, Tre Johnson’s three-point prowess, or Bub Carrington’s midrange effectiveness, but he’s the most versatile of the group. Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-bilal-coulibaly-expected-miss-beginning-season-thumb-surgery">Coulibaly is out with a thumb injury</a>, Wednesday’s game showed that reality.</p><p>George had the most points, assists, and blocks among him, Sarr, Johnson, and Carrington in the contest. The 21-year-old had two fewer rebounds than the seven-foot Sarr, and his field goal percentage was just 3.3 percent lower than Sarr’s despite taking five more shots. He also had just one fewer three-point shot made in two fewer attempts than Johnson, while he, Johnson, and Carrington each had a steal.</p><p><b>UPDATE: </b>George followed that up with a career night in Friday’s 117-107 win over the Dallas Mavericks, notching 34 points (11-15 FG, 7-9 3-point) with 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals over 35 minutes. He led the team in points and rebounds while also tying Sarr for the most blocks. Additionally, he tied for second in assists and steals while topping the squad with a plus-14 plus/minus.</p><p>Although Washington is still figuring out who will be its franchise cornerstone, George is making the best case for that title so far. For example, his <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?Season=2024-25&amp;TeamID=1610612764&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=NET_RATING" rel="noopener">-10.1 net rating</a> was the best of the young core sans Johnson, who played his one year at Texas University, per NBA Advanced Stats. Net rating is the offensive rating minus the defensive rating, both of which the 2024 No. 24 overall pick also topped the young core in.</p><p>George also averaged just five points on 30.8 percent shooting (12.5 percent 3-point) with 2.8 boards last October, but more than doubled those scoring and rebounding averages in February while adding 9.9 points to his field-goal percentage and almost quadrupling his three-point clip. The work didn’t stop after the season ended in April, as the 6-foot-8, 200-pounder got more reps in during Summer League and with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/wizards-news-wiz-kids-offering-fans-hope-overseas-tournaments">Canadian national team in the FIBA Americup</a>. Now, he’s a different player.</p><p>If George continues playing like he did on Wednesday and Friday, he’s a lock to make his first Rising Stars team and be one of the NBA’s most improved hoopers. Most importantly, he’ll give hope to a Washington fanbase that hasn’t experienced an Eastern Conference Semifinals appearance since 2017 or a conference finals berth since 1979.</p><p>It’ll take more than George’s ascension for the franchise to reach those heights again, but between the development of the aforementioned players as well as whoever it drafts in the 2026 lottery, there’s reason to believe it will in the coming years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

You just see the evolution day to day,” the 21-year-old said. “We work together every single day, we’re getting better together every single day. It’s super promising for the future.”</p><p>Washington is now 6-8 over its last 14 games, an impressive stretch for a 12-49 squad. The rookies are a big reason, as at least one has scored double-digit points in 12 straight contests. George’s progress is especially noticeable, as he’s shot 41 percent from deep since Feb. 5 after shooting 12.5 percent in October, 27.8 in November, 26.7 in December, and 31.5 in January.</p><p>However, the No. 24 overall pick isn’t satisfied.</p><p>“Definitely room for improvement. The numbers say I got better, but there’s so much more I can show, and be way more efficient,” he continued. “But I trust my work and I’m confident in my shot. If I’m open, I’m gonna let it fly.”</p><p>George continues to contribute across the board as well. The Miami alum led the Wizards with six defensive rebounds against the Jazz while adding two assists, a steal, and a block across 34 minutes. He also led with eight defensive boards in their 106-90 loss to the Miami Heat on Monday and eight assists in their 113-100 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday.</p><p>That’s not bad for a late first-round pick who flew under the radar before the trade deadline this season. Unlike Sarr, Carrington, and Bilal Coulibaly, George wasn’t named to the Rising Stars team, so he had the most to prove after the All-Star break. Luckily for Washington, the Swiss-Canadian international has stepped up.</p><h2><b>Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington impress Wizards’ Brian Keefe</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Wizards-Alex-Sarr.jpg"><figcaption>© Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Meanwhile, Sarr is back on track after playing just two games in February due to an ankle injury. The No. 2 overall pick scored 21 points (8-12 FG, 2-4 3 PT) with five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal in 29 minutes against Utah (15-47). Washington head coach Brian Keefe likes how he’s looked.</p><p>“You see his versatility, right? I think that’s what we all have been impressed with, is his ability to do multiple things on the court,” he said. “Playmake, handle the ball, switch pick and rolls, be a rim protector, and then a floor spacer. He’s learned, he’s getting better, but he’s getting more consistent at things that he’s really strong at. We’re learning his game as we go, but we’re not gonna put a ceiling on Alex. We’re gonna continue to push him to expand because he’s got some unique skill sets.”</p><p>Sarr’s 66.7 field goal percentage was the Wizards’ highest despite being tied for their second-most shot attempts. It also tied for the seven-footer’s most efficient game yet, as he scored 18 points with the same clip in Washington’s 110-98 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on Jan. 5. If he consistently makes over half his shots while maintaining his season averages of 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest for the rest of the season, he’ll re-enter Rookie of the Year conversations.</p><p>Additionally, Carrington has been just as impressive as Sarr and George. The No. 14 overall pick scored 12 points (4-10 FG, 0-3 3 PT) with a team-high nine assists on Wednesday. He also added two steals and two blocks in 34 minutes. This was the second straight game that he led Washington in dimes, as he had seven against Miami.</p><p>While Carrington’s shooting just 32.4 percent in March, he boasted a career-high 50 percent clip in February. Keefe talked up the Pitt alum after Friday’s practice.</p><p>“Bub’s been terrific. He’s been great all year,” he said. “One thing he does is, he’s one of the guys that helps us get into our offense well. He pushes the pace, gets the ball kicked ahead. And then we see his activity on the defensive end, his ability to rebound. He’s growing each month, so we’ve been really pleased with his development.”</p><p>Although the Jazz are also rebuilding, it’s a good sign that the Wizards’ rookies can already anchor a victory against another NBA team with Jordan Poole (elbow) out. They’re only just beginning, so imagine what they’ll do going forward as they keep improving.</p><h2><b>Justin Champagnie proves his worth</b></h2><p>Another storyline from Wednesday’s win was Champagnie’s quality effort. The 23-year-old led Washington’s bench with 17 points (5-9 FG, 4-7 3 PT) in his second game since signing a new four-year, $10 million contract on Sunday. It’s not a one-possession game, it’s not a two-possession game, it’s not a three-game year,” the 21-year-old said after Thursday’s practice. “There’s so much that’s been going on, and it’s just being able to stick with it, stay confident in your abilities, and keep doing what you do.”</p><p>George struggled initially, but his recent play has assured that he can be an important part of Washington’s rebuild. The No. 24 overall pick has improved in almost every statistical category throughout the season, averaging 10.8 points on 40.7 percent shooting (44.7 percent 3 PT) with 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, one block, and 1.3 steals per game across 29.9 minutes in February. That’s double his December scoring average and on better efficiency. He shot just 31.7 percent from the field that month, and 26.7 percent from deep.</p><p>However, George’s defense is the biggest surprise. The 6-foot-8, 200-pounder had just 0.6 steals and 0.9 blocks a night in December, and his recent uptick in the former has ballooned his season average to 0.9, which ties the San Antonio Spurs’ Stephon Castle atop the rookie class. The 25-year-old is still growing himself, but a team’s best player often sets the tone in the locker room, and his commitment to mentoring and settling down the Wizards’ youngsters has yielded results. He could have easily checked out until he got traded to a contender, but he stayed patient.</p><p>Poole, of course, benefits by leading the team. That role has elevated the former Golden State Warrior’s game, as he’s averaging the most points (21), assists (4.8), three-point percentage (37), steals (1.4), blocks (0.5), offensive rebounds (0.5), and minutes (31.3) of his career. His stock has never been higher, and he’s now establishing himself as a legitimate second or third option on a contender.</p><p>With two seasons left on Poole’s contract, this will be a long-term partnership unless Washington flips him for assets at some point. Either way, the Michigan alum’s mentorship will strengthen the squad for the long haul.</p><h2><b>Khris Middleton likes Wizards’ spirit</b></h2><p>Speaking of veteran presence, the recently acquired Middleton is another good player to learn from. You can tell the inexperience at times with us as a group through stretches, how sometimes we kind of go wild, I guess,” Middleton admitted on Friday. “But that’s part of it, that’s part of the learning experience. That’s part of playing fast also, learning when to push the pace and learning when to try to get the best shot to slow things down, but I think overall the group has been great.”</p><p>The Wizards are 1-2 with Middleton in the lineup, and both losses were competitive. The first game was a 104-101 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks, the team that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/bucks-news-khris-middleton-wizards-kyle-kuzma-trade">traded him to Washington</a> on Feb. 5. The second was a 107-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets, and the last was Wednesday’s 129-121 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.</p><p>The Wizards’ only recent blowout was a 110-90 road defeat to the Orlando Magic when both Middleton and Marcus Smart were out with injuries on Sunday. It’s a small sample size, but the veterans are essential to the operation.</p><p>“They’re a positive team, they wanna win, they compete hard every night,” the former Olympian continued. “That’s what I want. You can’t really control the wins and losses, all you can do is control your habits, and every day these guys have great habits.”</p><p>Middleton and Smart will be even more important against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday, as Poole (elbow) is out while Alex Sarr (ankle) is a game-time decision. Malcolm Brogdon (ankle), who hasn’t played since the All-Star break, will miss the game as well.</p><p>While Washington never intended to contend this season, having competitive veterans who want to win along with developing youngsters is an essential balance. Without the former, the team could have spiraled amid the struggles.</p><p>Now, the Wizards’ young players are well-positioned to support whoever the team lands with its 2025 and ’26 lottery picks for years to come.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
