They defeated the Washington Wizards for their eighth straight victory, which put with within one half-game of the second-place Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference standings. And on the whole, things are looking pretty good in the Big Apple.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/indispensable-knicks-player-expectations-karl-anthony-towns">Karl-Anthony Towns has continued his dominance</a>. Mikal Bridges has kept up his strong play. And everyone else has stepped up as needed (see Josh Hart in the Knicks most recent win). But one addition that’s already been made can help the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-landry-shamet-addresses-key-need">Knicks take the next step, Landry Shamet. </a></p><p>Shamet is a sixth-year veteran with a proven skill set. In short, he shoots the lights out.</p><p>He has <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shamela01.html" rel="noopener">career averages</a> of 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game, and he has converted 38.4% of three-point attempts. And he’s pretty darn efficient, too. He averaged just seven field goal attempts per game through his career. But the Shamet signing isn’t about how much he can score. It was more about who he relieves and how that can help keep the team fresh for a deep playoff run.</p><h2><b>Mikal Bridges could burn out at anytime </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Mikal-Bridges-driving-to-the-basket-against-the-Washington-Wizards.jpg"><figcaption>Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>To fully appreciate the Shamet signing, we’ll have to examine Bridges, and—to a lesser extent—OG Anunoby. Bridges leads the entire NBA in minutes per game, despite being new to the Knicks and taking on an entirely new role (i.e., going from a first option to the team’s third or fourth option). While Bridges has been an iron man, to say the least, through his basketball career, it is entirely conceivable that he suffers an injury at any point in time. And it’s more likely given how much he’s played this season, and all prior seasons.</p><p>In addition to leading the league in minutes per game, Bridges has appeared in all of the Knicks’ 33 games so far. In fact, he hasn’t missed a single professional game through his career.</p><p>What’s more, Tom Thibodeau is obviously prone to leaning on his stars a little more heavily than most coaches. Case in point, he has kept his starters in <i>deep</i> into the fourth quarter of virtually every blowout win this season. Granted, it’s understandable to keep starters when leads are virtually never safe. But Thibodeau receives a good deal of criticism about this, and Bridges might just bear the brunt of it.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet to the rescue</b></h2><p>But it’s not entirely coach Thibodeau’s fault. The Knicks roster construction has demanded that Thibodeau lean on his starters. Entering the season, there were only two legitimate bench players who could handle significant roles (due to injuries)—Miles McBride and Cam Payne. There was not a legitimate shooting guard who could confidently defend most NBA twos (and there still isn’t a legitimate backup wing).</p><p>With the arrival of  Shamet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-injury-update-sheds-light-contract-situation">who would have been a Knick sooner if not for a shoulder injury</a>, coach Thibodeau can now insert the Wichita State alum into situations for between 1o and 20 minutes per game. That will likely benefit Bridges more than anyone.</p><p>Despite <i>just</i> joining the Knicks, Shamet is averaging 9.2 minutes —and 4.3 points on 75% three-point shooting with a +6.7  plus-minus—per game. And the Knicks’ most recent win exemplifies exactly how Shamet can help.</p><p>He played 11 minutes, which alleviated some of the burden on Bridges. The Villanova alum played just 36 minutes against the Wizards, whereas he’d averaged 41.2 minutes per game through the team’s previous 10 games. That’s a notable difference, and it adds up over the course of a season.</p><h2><b>Shamet might benefit OG Anunoby and Josh Hart, too</b></h2><p>While Shamet is just six-foot-four, his presence will probably impact the team’s bigger wings, as well. How so? We know that coach Thibodeau isn’t going to play Bridges 10 minutes less per game. Bridges is far more durable than Anunoby. So, it stands to reason that he will, instead, slide Bridges and Hart to the three and four, respectively, for some of Shamet’s minutes. That means fewer minutes for Anunoby.</p><p>Anunoby is averaging 36.6 minutes per game through the season. However, he played 34 or fewer minutes in two of New York’s previous three games—and they were the two games in which Shamet played 10 or more.</p><p>To be fair, looking at Shamet’s impact on Anunoby’s minutes is difficult as there has been  far too small a sample size to extrapolate how coach Thibodeau will augment rotations. But it’s important to remember that while position-less basketball is a pipe dream, the modern NBA does allow for freer use of players depending on opponent rotations.</p><p>In other words, New York could easily play Jalen Brunson, McBride, Shamet, Hart, and Towns for stretches. They could even have Shamet as a four for short periods of time. And coach Thibodeau has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt. So, sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride—because the Knicks are better prepared for a deep run now with Shamet than they were a short while ago. And much of that has to do with the idea that Bridges may get a little more rest along the way.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The signing comes after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-make-final-landry-shamet-roster-decision">New York waved Shamet earlier this year</a> after he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-exits-hornets-game-in-pain-injury">suffered a shoulder injury in a pre-season game</a>. But Shamet joining the team was always part of the plan, and he adds another versatile veteran to the Knicks bench. Now, the Knicks look poised to be even better than expected considering <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-recent-success-molded-mikal-bridges-fit">how well they’ve played of late</a>, and Shamet adds importance depth, and shooting to a team in desperate need of both things.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet signing helps Knicks out in a position of need</b></h2><p>Shamet is a six-year veteran with <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shamela01.html" rel="noopener">career averages</a> of 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game, and he has converted 38.4% of three-point attempts, according to basketball reference. Prior to last season, Shamet’s career <i>low</i> was 8.3 points per game (36.8% three-point shooting).</p><p>Granted, Shamet’s stat line was less impressive last season (7.1 points on 33.8% three-point shooting); however, that can be a result of one of two things: he played a career-low 15.8 minutes per game, and he had fewer open looks as a result of the Washington Wizards lack of offensive threats.</p><p>Regardless, Shamet is a gifted shooter who coach Tom Thibodeau values because of his experience playing with Cam Payne and Mikal Bridges (while on the Phoenix Suns). He is unlikely to play major minutes, as Payne is the backup point guard and Mikal Bridges and Miles McBride have most of the shooting guard minutes locked down. Still, the six-foot-four-inch shooting guard represents another shooter with a real NBA pedigree, and that can be meaningful.</p><h2><b>Knicks’ depth is improved by Shamet</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Landry-Shamet-converts-a-layup-against-the-Minnesota-Timberwolves-in-a-pre-season-matchup.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Knicks rotation can absolutely use another shooting guard. The depth chart is awfully thin at the moment. Beyond their starting five, the Knicks play only four players, consistently—Miles McBride, Precious Achiuwa, Cam Payne, and Jericho Sims. Sims and Achiuwa are both big men who are entirely necessary considering a lack of size in the starting five.</p><p>In other words, the Knicks bench boasts only two non-big men, and both are point guards (or traditional point guard size). So, if Bridges, Josh Hart, or O.G. Anunoby get into foul trouble or—God forbid—get injured, there were no notable backups, until now.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet as an insurance policy</b></h2><p>Landry Shamet is as much an insurance policy as he is a weapon. His experience and cool demeanor mean he can hold down the fort for an extended period of time without the team coming completely undone. Sure, New York needs its starters to succeed on a bigger scale (e.g., in the playoffs), but having capable depth is incredibly important.</p><p>Think back to last season. After going on an absolute heater after adding Anunoby, New York struggled without Anunoby and Julius Randle. Why? Because two capable forwards were out at the same time for a number of months. But the presence of Hart (and to a lesser degree, Achiuwa) helped the Knicks stay afloat. So, instead of going 7-20 (or possibly worse), the Knicks went 13-14, keeping them in prime playoff position.</p><p>Of course, it felt like the world was ending in the moment; but in hindsight, going without Anunoby and Randle didn’t do <i>that</i> much damage. Shamet can play a similar role if needed (which hopefully is not).</p><p>To be clear, there is still more to do in terms of fleshing out the depth chart. Specifically, New York still needs a bigger wing (we see you, TJ Warren). However, that’s a problem for another day. For now, the Knicks just added a tangible piece to a team that was dangerously thin at his position. And just think, the Knicks front office has another month-and-a-half to maneuver before the trade deadline.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-tie-nba-3-point-record-opening-night-vs-knicks">Celtics tied the NBA record for three-pointers made</a> in a game in the season opener, and now it appears that the Knicks are trying to add some more firepower into their arsenal.</p><p>The Knicks are trying to add sharpshooters Landry Shamet and Matt Ryan to their team, but they aren’t going about it in the way that you might think. Both players are eligible for the NBA G League Draft, which will take place on Saturday.</p><p>The Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1849890333292888486" rel="noopener">have the top two picks</a> in the draft and could use them to pick up the two snipers, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.</p><p>“Landry Shamet and Matt Ryan, players the Knicks are known to covet when they take their roster from 12 to 14, are both eligible for Saturday’s @nbagleague draft, sources say,” Stein reported on X, formerly Twitter. “Westchester owns the top two picks; drafting Shamet enables the Knicks to supervise his shoulder rehab.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-make-final-landry-shamet-roster-decision">Knicks waived Shamet on Saturday</a> after he sustained a shoulder injury during a preseason game. They have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-targeting-sharpshooter">also been linked with Ryan</a> as this season has gotten underway, and this could be their easiest route to getting him in the building.</p><h2><b>Knicks hoping season opener isn’t a sign of things to come</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Tom-Thibodeau.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Knicks-Celtics matchup to open the NBA regular season on Tuesday night was billed as a blockbuster matchup between the two best teams in the Eastern Conference on paper, but what transpired on the court was anything but a marquee contest.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-panic-meter-after-embarrassing-season-opener-vs-celtics">Celtics ran the new-look Knicks off of the court</a>, knocking down an absurd amount of three-pointers on their way to a 132-109 win. The margin of victory probably could have been larger had the Celtics not spent the last six minutes shooting exhibition-like three-pointers in an attempt to break the all-time NBA record, which they tied but never eclipsed.</p><p>The Knicks are hoping that’s not a sign of things to come for a team that went all-in this offseason and traded for Karl-Anthony Towns to add some scoring punch to their frontcourt. Despite the discouraging loss, there are signs that the Knicks should land on their feet and be just fine.</p><p>This roster is too talented to not perform well as long as they’re healthy. Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby form one of the best defensive duos in the league on the wing and Jalen Brunson proved last season that he can get a bucket with the best of them.</p><p>In the middle, Towns gives the Knicks a shooter that they didn’t have before, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-stephen-a-smith-disbelief-latest-mitchell-robinson-injury-update">should get Mitchell Robinson back</a> at some point to help out the defense. New York had gotten an extensive look at the players that were added before training camp, and they made a move on one standout contributor on Saturday: former Los Angeles Clippers guard Landry Shamet.</p><p>The Knicks <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1847737102714204590" rel="noopener">are waiving</a> Shamet from their roster, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports. Shamet had an admirable preseason, averaging 10.8 points per game. New York will likely maintain their roster at 12 players and bring Shamet back once he recovers from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-exits-hornets-game-in-pain-injury" rel="noopener">his shoulder injury</a>, Charania added.</p><p>ESPN Front Office Insider Bobby Marks <a href="http://New%20York%20is%20allowed%20to%20have%20fewer%20than%2014%20players%20on%20their%20roster%20but%20for%20no%20more%20than%2028%20total%20days%20during%20the%20regular%20season%20and%2014%20consecutive%20days%20at%20a%20time." rel="noopener">provided more insight</a> on Charania’s report regarding the Knicks’ roster status:</p><p>“New York is allowed to have fewer than 14 players on their roster but for no more than 28 total days during the regular season and 14 consecutive days at a time,” Marks wrote on X (formerly Twitter).</p><p>Hopefully, Landry Shamet will undergo a speedy injury recovery and find his way back on New York’s roster. The ex-Clippers guard has played for five different NBA teams since being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018. His other bylines include the Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns, and Washington Wizards.</p><p>Shamet is a valuable sharpshooter who can boost the Knicks’ floor spacing, should the team bring him back. ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel explained why <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-injury-update-sheds-light-contract-situation">Shamet’s presence would be well</a> for New York.</p><p>“It would make sense for New York to keep Shamet despite his injury since he has always been a reliable three-point shooter.
