However, some ‘expect’ the team to make a move to <a href="https://x.com/SbondyNBA/status/1966522723028324858" rel="noopener">clear space for both players</a>, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.</p><p>Shamet and Brogdon both had opportunities to sign with other teams but elected to sign non-guaranteed contracts with the Knicks, sources familiar with the situation told ClutchPoints. This could indicate confidence from both players that they will make the 2026 roster.</p><p>If New York does make a trade, one of their four rookies drafted in 2024 could be on the move. The Knicks have received at least one offer for one of their second-year players this week, league sources told ClutchPoints. The expectation of several league sources is that the organization will trade a player for draft capital to clear a roster spot.</p><p>Jalen Brunson, Miles ‘Deuce’ McBride, and new additions in Jordan Clarkson and Brogdon would give the team depth at guard. This could logjam incoming second-year guard Tyler Kolek behind the group of veteran ball handlers. Moving Kolek could afford the 24-year-old opportunity that he would not get in New York. At least one opposing team has demonstrated interest in Kolek this offseason, ClutchPoints also learned.</p><p>Leon Rose’s front office entered 2024-25 knowing that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-process-replace-tom-thibodeau-shouldnt-confuse-fans">the Knicks’ true championship window</a> would open in the 2025-26 season. With Jalen Brunson leading the way, New York finished a couple wins short of the NBA Finals. Now, Landry Shamet is back with the team on a new deal.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/how-knicks-landry-shamet-boost-mikal-bridges-wing-rotation">Shamet became a key piece of the Knicks’ depth</a> as the season went on. In the playoffs, he was utilized as a shooter and showed some flashes against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. However, he entered the offseason as a free agent that New York did not prioritize. The Knicks made other moves before coming to the negotiation table with one of their role players.</p><p>While New York had more important things to address, adding more depth to the roster was a must. Luckily for the Knicks front office, the team did not lose any major pieces and added a few players who could help them take advantage of a wide-open Eastern Conference. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Shamet is back with the team <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1966223380472017205" rel="noopener">on a one-year deal</a>.</p><p>“Free agent guard Landry Shamet has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the New York Knicks, his agent George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group tells ESPN. Shamet stays with the Knicks for his 8th NBA season,” Sharania said.</p><p>With Brown at the helm, Shamet became a much more important piece to bring back on the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-starters-on-pace-for-bad-history-under-tom-thibodeau">Brunson and the rest of the starters played the lion’s share of the minutes</a> in the postseason. That came back to haunt them against the Pacers. Thus, he became a photographer at the US Open.</p><p>The Associated Press’ Brian Mahoney reported that the former Knicks sniper was snapping pictures for the United States Tennis Association (USTA). What started as a hobby <a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-open-landry-shamet-knicks-photos-8645f9d416d11e29f679bd533adbe540?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=share" rel="noopener">has become a passion</a> for Shamet.</p><p>“I think since I picked the camera up I don’t really foresee a day where I put it down. Even when we go on the road, I always have a camera with me. So whether it’s just like a hobby, walking around, shooting stuff that I like to maybe print out and put on the wall in my house, or doing things like this, it’ll always be there,” said Shamet.</p><p>He was present at Arthur Ashe Stadium to capture the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/golf/us-open-news-carlos-alcaraz-new-look-rory-mcilroy-verdict">title-clinching performances of Carlos Alcaraz</a> and Aryna Sabalenka. As an athlete as well, Shamet knows how important it is to chronicle career milestones.</p><p>“It was Shamet’s second year with an unpaid position with the USTA. In 2024, he was on the grounds during the first week of the tournament. This time, he performed well enough that he was asked to come on the final weekend,” reported Mahoney.</p><p>Shamet played 50 games with the Knicks last season, averaging 5.7 points on a career-high 46.7% shooting in 15.2 minutes off the bench. They defeated the Washington Wizards for their eighth straight victory, which put with within one half-game of the second-place Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference standings. And on the whole, things are looking pretty good in the Big Apple.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/indispensable-knicks-player-expectations-karl-anthony-towns">Karl-Anthony Towns has continued his dominance</a>. Mikal Bridges has kept up his strong play. And everyone else has stepped up as needed (see Josh Hart in the Knicks most recent win). But one addition that’s already been made can help the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-landry-shamet-addresses-key-need">Knicks take the next step, Landry Shamet. </a></p><p>Shamet is a sixth-year veteran with a proven skill set. In short, he shoots the lights out.</p><p>He has <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shamela01.html" rel="noopener">career averages</a> of 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game, and he has converted 38.4% of three-point attempts. And he’s pretty darn efficient, too. He averaged just seven field goal attempts per game through his career. But the Shamet signing isn’t about how much he can score. It was more about who he relieves and how that can help keep the team fresh for a deep playoff run.</p><h2><b>Mikal Bridges could burn out at anytime </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Mikal-Bridges-driving-to-the-basket-against-the-Washington-Wizards.jpg"><figcaption>Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>To fully appreciate the Shamet signing, we’ll have to examine Bridges, and—to a lesser extent—OG Anunoby. Bridges leads the entire NBA in minutes per game, despite being new to the Knicks and taking on an entirely new role (i.e., going from a first option to the team’s third or fourth option). While Bridges has been an iron man, to say the least, through his basketball career, it is entirely conceivable that he suffers an injury at any point in time. And it’s more likely given how much he’s played this season, and all prior seasons.</p><p>In addition to leading the league in minutes per game, Bridges has appeared in all of the Knicks’ 33 games so far. In fact, he hasn’t missed a single professional game through his career.</p><p>What’s more, Tom Thibodeau is obviously prone to leaning on his stars a little more heavily than most coaches. Case in point, he has kept his starters in <i>deep</i> into the fourth quarter of virtually every blowout win this season. Granted, it’s understandable to keep starters when leads are virtually never safe. But Thibodeau receives a good deal of criticism about this, and Bridges might just bear the brunt of it.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet to the rescue</b></h2><p>But it’s not entirely coach Thibodeau’s fault. The Knicks roster construction has demanded that Thibodeau lean on his starters. Entering the season, there were only two legitimate bench players who could handle significant roles (due to injuries)—Miles McBride and Cam Payne. There was not a legitimate shooting guard who could confidently defend most NBA twos (and there still isn’t a legitimate backup wing).</p><p>With the arrival of  Shamet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-injury-update-sheds-light-contract-situation">who would have been a Knick sooner if not for a shoulder injury</a>, coach Thibodeau can now insert the Wichita State alum into situations for between 1o and 20 minutes per game. That will likely benefit Bridges more than anyone.</p><p>Despite <i>just</i> joining the Knicks, Shamet is averaging 9.2 minutes —and 4.3 points on 75% three-point shooting with a +6.7  plus-minus—per game. And the Knicks’ most recent win exemplifies exactly how Shamet can help.</p><p>He played 11 minutes, which alleviated some of the burden on Bridges. The Villanova alum played just 36 minutes against the Wizards, whereas he’d averaged 41.2 minutes per game through the team’s previous 10 games. That’s a notable difference, and it adds up over the course of a season.</p><h2><b>Shamet might benefit OG Anunoby and Josh Hart, too</b></h2><p>While Shamet is just six-foot-four, his presence will probably impact the team’s bigger wings, as well. How so? We know that coach Thibodeau isn’t going to play Bridges 10 minutes less per game. Bridges is far more durable than Anunoby. So, it stands to reason that he will, instead, slide Bridges and Hart to the three and four, respectively, for some of Shamet’s minutes. That means fewer minutes for Anunoby.</p><p>Anunoby is averaging 36.6 minutes per game through the season. However, he played 34 or fewer minutes in two of New York’s previous three games—and they were the two games in which Shamet played 10 or more.</p><p>To be fair, looking at Shamet’s impact on Anunoby’s minutes is difficult as there has been  far too small a sample size to extrapolate how coach Thibodeau will augment rotations. But it’s important to remember that while position-less basketball is a pipe dream, the modern NBA does allow for freer use of players depending on opponent rotations.</p><p>In other words, New York could easily play Jalen Brunson, McBride, Shamet, Hart, and Towns for stretches. They could even have Shamet as a four for short periods of time. And coach Thibodeau has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt. So, sit back, buckle up, and enjoy the ride—because the Knicks are better prepared for a deep run now with Shamet than they were a short while ago. And much of that has to do with the idea that Bridges may get a little more rest along the way.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The signing comes after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-make-final-landry-shamet-roster-decision">New York waved Shamet earlier this year</a> after he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-exits-hornets-game-in-pain-injury">suffered a shoulder injury in a pre-season game</a>. But Shamet joining the team was always part of the plan, and he adds another versatile veteran to the Knicks bench. Now, the Knicks look poised to be even better than expected considering <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-recent-success-molded-mikal-bridges-fit">how well they’ve played of late</a>, and Shamet adds importance depth, and shooting to a team in desperate need of both things.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet signing helps Knicks out in a position of need</b></h2><p>Shamet is a six-year veteran with <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shamela01.html" rel="noopener">career averages</a> of 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game, and he has converted 38.4% of three-point attempts, according to basketball reference. Prior to last season, Shamet’s career <i>low</i> was 8.3 points per game (36.8% three-point shooting).</p><p>Granted, Shamet’s stat line was less impressive last season (7.1 points on 33.8% three-point shooting); however, that can be a result of one of two things: he played a career-low 15.8 minutes per game, and he had fewer open looks as a result of the Washington Wizards lack of offensive threats.</p><p>Regardless, Shamet is a gifted shooter who coach Tom Thibodeau values because of his experience playing with Cam Payne and Mikal Bridges (while on the Phoenix Suns). He is unlikely to play major minutes, as Payne is the backup point guard and Mikal Bridges and Miles McBride have most of the shooting guard minutes locked down. Still, the six-foot-four-inch shooting guard represents another shooter with a real NBA pedigree, and that can be meaningful.</p><h2><b>Knicks’ depth is improved by Shamet</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Landry-Shamet-converts-a-layup-against-the-Minnesota-Timberwolves-in-a-pre-season-matchup.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Knicks rotation can absolutely use another shooting guard. The depth chart is awfully thin at the moment. Beyond their starting five, the Knicks play only four players, consistently—Miles McBride, Precious Achiuwa, Cam Payne, and Jericho Sims. Sims and Achiuwa are both big men who are entirely necessary considering a lack of size in the starting five.</p><p>In other words, the Knicks bench boasts only two non-big men, and both are point guards (or traditional point guard size). So, if Bridges, Josh Hart, or O.G. Anunoby get into foul trouble or—God forbid—get injured, there were no notable backups, until now.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet as an insurance policy</b></h2><p>Landry Shamet is as much an insurance policy as he is a weapon. His experience and cool demeanor mean he can hold down the fort for an extended period of time without the team coming completely undone. Sure, New York needs its starters to succeed on a bigger scale (e.g., in the playoffs), but having capable depth is incredibly important.</p><p>Think back to last season. After going on an absolute heater after adding Anunoby, New York struggled without Anunoby and Julius Randle. Why? Because two capable forwards were out at the same time for a number of months. But the presence of Hart (and to a lesser degree, Achiuwa) helped the Knicks stay afloat. So, instead of going 7-20 (or possibly worse), the Knicks went 13-14, keeping them in prime playoff position.</p><p>Of course, it felt like the world was ending in the moment; but in hindsight, going without Anunoby and Randle didn’t do <i>that</i> much damage. Shamet can play a similar role if needed (which hopefully is not).</p><p>To be clear, there is still more to do in terms of fleshing out the depth chart. Specifically, New York still needs a bigger wing (we see you, TJ Warren). However, that’s a problem for another day. For now, the Knicks just added a tangible piece to a team that was dangerously thin at his position. And just think, the Knicks front office has another month-and-a-half to maneuver before the trade deadline.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-tie-nba-3-point-record-opening-night-vs-knicks">Celtics tied the NBA record for three-pointers made</a> in a game in the season opener, and now it appears that the Knicks are trying to add some more firepower into their arsenal.</p><p>The Knicks are trying to add sharpshooters Landry Shamet and Matt Ryan to their team, but they aren’t going about it in the way that you might think. The margin of victory probably could have been larger had the Celtics not spent the last six minutes shooting exhibition-like three-pointers in an attempt to break the all-time NBA record, which they tied but never eclipsed.</p><p>The Knicks are hoping that’s not a sign of things to come for a team that went all-in this offseason and traded for Karl-Anthony Towns to add some scoring punch to their frontcourt. Despite the discouraging loss, there are signs that the Knicks should land on their feet and be just fine.</p><p>This roster is too talented to not perform well as long as they’re healthy. Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby form one of the best defensive duos in the league on the wing and Jalen Brunson proved last season that he can get a bucket with the best of them.</p><p>In the middle, Towns gives the Knicks a shooter that they didn’t have before, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-stephen-a-smith-disbelief-latest-mitchell-robinson-injury-update">should get Mitchell Robinson back</a> at some point to help out the defense. The ex-Clippers guard has played for five different NBA teams since being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018. Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-landry-shamet-exits-hornets-game-in-pain-injury">suffered a shoulder injury in a preseason game</a> against the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday.</p><p>Initially, the severity of Shamet’s injury was not known, but it did not look good since he left the game in obvious pain holding his right shoulder. After undergoing further testing, the team revealed that Shamet had <a href="https://x.com/NY_KnicksPR/status/1847382161625928079" rel="noopener">dislocated his right shoulder</a> and that he will be re-evaluated at a later date.</p><p>This is not the best news for the team nor for Shamet, as he has been looking for a chance to make the Knicks’ opening-night roster. While it appears as if his contract with the team is now in jeopardy right before the start of the new season, the language that New York used in Shamet’s injury report suggests that they may keep him around.</p><p>The fact that the Knicks made it clear to state that Shamet would be re-evaluated at a later date makes it sound like he will be on the active roster ahead of the start of the new season. The Knicks currently have 12 players on their active roster and are $3.5 million below the second apron maximum of $188.9 million, which they are hard-capped at.</p><p>It would <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-new-york-secondary-players-2024-25-season">make sense for New York to keep Shamet</a> despite his injury since he has always been a reliable three-point shooter. While he has struggled to find his shot in the preseason, shooting just 30 percent from the perimeter in four games with the Knicks, Shamet has shot 38.4 percent from deep for his career. Last season with the Washington Wizards, Shamet averaged 7.1 points per game while shooting 33.8 percent from three-point range.</p><p>Shamet, who originally signed an Exhibit 9 contract with the Knicks in the preseason, is protected from injury and will receive some compensation from the team should he be waived between now and the start of the regular season. With training camp coming up soon, the Knicks just made a significant move to solidify the back-end of their rotation by signing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-washington-makes-11-million-landry-shamet-decision">former Washington Wizards guard Landry Shamet</a>.</p><p>Shamet <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1834958162706780399" rel="noopener">is signing</a> a one-year deal with the Knicks, according to ESPN’s NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>Before signing Shamet, the Knicks had one standard roster spot left heading into training camp.</p><p>Shamet, who appeared in 46 games for the Wizards last season and averaged 15.8 minutes per game put up 7.1 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 33.8% from three on 3.4 attempts. Shamet’s best season came in 2019-20 with the Los Angeles Clippers when he played 27.4 minutes and scored 9.3 points per game as an everyday starter on a playoff team.</p><p>The 27-year-old Shamet is entering his seventh season in the NBA. Shamet was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 26th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Wichita State before being traded to the Clippers during his rookie season. After spending one more year in Los Angeles, he then spent a season with the Brooklyn Nets. He then spent two seasons with the Phoenix Suns before joining the Wizards last year.</p><h2><b>Landry Shamet’s outlook with the New York Knicks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/09-14-24-shamet-image.jpg"><figcaption>© Stephen Lew-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Knicks’ depth was certainly a problem for them during the playoffs last year when their rotation was decimated by injuries, they made sure to address that this season through trades, free agency and the NBA Draft.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-2024-offseason-recap-mikal-bridges-trade-paves-path-title-contention">The biggest acquisition was of course Mikal Bridges</a>, who is expected to slot into the starting lineup alongside Jalen Brunson, O.G. Annunoby, Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson. However, other depth pieces, like Cam Payne, Tyler Kolek and now Shamet are all expected to be able to contribute off the bench and get real minutes, especially if there are any injury concerns.</p><p>Shamet has primarily played at the shooting guard position throughout his NBA career, but has handled the ball before and could run the point for the Knicks if necessary in a pinch. While he should not be ahead of players like Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride or Josh Hart on the depth chart, the 6-4 Shamet is a good enough three point shooter that he will get minutes.</p><p>Signing a player like Shamet does not necessarily move the needle for the Knicks. But, it does provide them with a veteran shooter who has legitimate playoff experience, someone any contending team would be happy to have.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Furthermore, the Wizards have made a decisive move on Landry Shamet’s contract that has implications for their 2024-25 roster.</p><p>Washington is declining Landry Shamet’s <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1809649472160559605" rel="noopener">$11 million option</a> going into the 2024-25 season, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The sharpshooting guard will now join the free agent market.</p><p>Landry Shamet joined the Wizards for the 2023-24 season after spending two years with the Phoenix Suns. The 27-year-old comes off a year with averages of 7.1 points per game. Shamet shot 33.8 percent on his three-pointers in 2023-24, but he is a career 38.4 percent shooter. It will be interesting to see if he takes a pay cut to return to the Wizards or joins another team during the 2024 NBA Free Agency Period.</p><p>One of the biggest highlights of Washington’s offseason has been their NBA Draft selection. The Wizards selected French big man Alexandre Sarr with their second overall pick. At 7’1″ with a 7’4″ wingspan, Sarr can cover ground like few can. Offensively, he can play on the perimeter or the post. The 19-year averaged 9.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game with the NBL’s Perth Wildcats. In addition, he shot 50 percent from the field and 27.6 on three-pointers.</p><p>ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-2024-nba-draft-grades-every-pick" rel="noopener">gave Washington’s draft grade</a> of Sarr an “A+”. This is what the insider had to say about Sarr:</p><p>“Alex Sarr got his wish of wanting to go second overall to the Washington Wizards instead of being in consideration for the Hawks’ No. 1 pick. It is clear to see that the Wizards are rebuilding, and they now get their hands on Sarr, who could end up being the best frontcourt player from this draft. His length and athleticism at the power forward and center positions make Sarr the perfect long-term prospect to pair with Bilal Coulibaly, whom Washington selected in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft. Most notably, Kyle Kuzma, one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-kyle-kuzma-still-being-linked-to-lakers-trade">Wizards’ go-to scorers</a> from 2023-24, could be moved during the offseason.</p><p>“Four names that have been consistently linked to the Lakers on the trade market have been Jerami Grant, Kyle Kuzma, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Cam Johnson,” Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported on July 3. “And as I recently reported at The Athletic, I’ve heard that the Lakers have held trade talks with Portland, Brooklyn, and Utah among other teams in recent days. So the Portland and Brooklyn talks would align with those players being on the trade market, and at this point, it’s a matter of haggling over picks and which players are involved.”</p><p>If Washington parts with Kuzma, it will shift the team into a further rebuilding state than they already are.
