After all, they were coming off a season in which they won the fewest games in the NBA last season with 17. They have always seemed to throw the season around March and April, with the likes of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-news-john-stockton-calls-out-utah-tanking-strategy">Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler being “rested”</a> for what one would presume are tanking purposes.</p><p>But under the watchful eye of head coach Will Hardy, the Jazz can be very competitive, especially towards the start of a new campaign. On Monday night, the Jazz, after being pushed to the brink by the Phoenix Suns, managed to pull out a 138-134 win in overtime — with Markkanen going off for 51 points on 14-32 shooting from the field.</p><p>Markkanen’s talent can never be questioned, as he remains one of the most versatile scorers in the league and one of the most efficient all while moving smoothly despite standing at 7’0″. And with his career-high scoring effort in the Jazz’s second win of the season in three games, he <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1983020719676981342" rel="noopener">became the first player</a> in franchise history to score at least 50 points in a single game since Karl Malone put up 56 all the way back in 1998, as pointed out by ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>This incredible performance from Markkanen also marks the fourth time this season that someone has crossed the 50-point barrier. For Serbia, it was deja vu after also falling in the Round of 16 in 2022 against Italy.</p><p>Finland came out firing, racing to an 11-1 lead and finishing the first quarter up 16-5. Serbia clawed back to tie the game at 28-28 in the second quarter and went into halftime ahead 48-44, with Jokic scoring 16 first-half points. But the Finns refused to fold, keeping the score tight and entering the final quarter with a 68-66 advantage.</p><p>The game swung back and forth in the last 10 minutes. Serbia went on a 6-0 run to lead 77-75 with under five minutes left, but Elias Valtonen turned the contest with a remarkable stretch. Valtonen scored 8 of his 13 points in the final two minutes, including two three-pointers and a tip-in, putting Finland up 87-81 with 53 seconds to play.</p><p>Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, Finland’s star and one of the tournament’s top scorers, anchored the team with 29 points, 7–8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3–4 steals, depending on the source. Mikael Jantunen added 15 points, while 19-year-old Miro Little impressed with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. That, as well as some offseason moves, is why some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/9fc40870/lauri-markkanen">believe Lauri Markkanen</a> could be traded sooner rather than later.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz">With the Jazz</a>, Markkanen seemingly blossomed into a star; in his first season with the team, he blew away all expectations by averaging career-high 25.6 points per game while shooting nearly 50% from the field and 40% on 3-pointers. Over the past two seasons, Markkanen’s numbers have decreased, and so has Utah’s win total; after a 37-45 campaign in Markkanen’s first season, the Jazz won 31 games in 2023-24 and only 17 games this past season as part of the worst record in the NBA.</p><p>Shortly after his hiring, new Jazz president of basketball operations Austin Ainge, the son of Utah CEO Danny Ainge, indicated the team isn’t interested in tanking this year. But the team certainly hasn’t done enough to make fans believe they are much different from a year ago. Although they acquired Jusuf Nurkic from the Charlotte Hornets and selected Walter Clayton Jr. and Ace Bailey in the first round of the draft, they shipped out Collin Sexton, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-news-jordan-clarkson-breaks-silence-utah-buyout">bought out Jordan Clarkson</a>, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-trade-grade-john-collins-deal-clippers-heat">and traded John Collins for Kyle Anderson</a>, a future second-round draft pick, cash, a trade exception, and the small contract of Kevin Love, who is also expected to be bought out.</p><p>While these moves certainly seem logical for a team in Utah’s position, it does not inspire confidence in their ability to compete, even with Markkanen playing at his best. So could a trade involving the “Finnisher” happen? Maybe, but it is reportedly not likely.</p><p>According to ESPN, it “is not Utah’s intention” <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-rumors-bill-simmons-hints-lauri-markkanen-trade-availability">to trade Markkanen</a>, in spite of their forward-looking moves this offseason.</p><p>“It would be too much to describe Markkanen as untouchable, but the Jazz still project the All-Star forward as a key player in their future core,” ESPN’s insiders wrote.</p><p>“Utah listened to offers for Markkanen last summer, but none of the talks with other teams ever came close to tempting CEO Danny Ainge and GM Justin Zanik to make a trade. The Jazz ultimately awarded <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/9fc40870/lauri-markkanen/contract">Markkanen a five-year, $238 million maximum renegotiation and extension</a>, allowing him to sign the deal last Aug. 7 and making him ineligible to be traded before last season’s deadline.”</p><p>The value of Markkanen, 28, was almost certainly at its peak in 2023 or 2024 — before he signed his new deal, the extension part of which begins this coming season. He will earn $46.4 million in Year 1 and $46.1 million, $49.8 million, and $53.5 million from 2026 to 2029, respectively. Although teams could theoretically trade for him despite the pricetag, the likelihood will certainly decrease once teams near the completion of their rosters this summer.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They are rebuilding through the draft, which had Bill Simmons comment on the star forward’s future with the franchise.</p><p>Markkanen became a star player for the Jazz in the 2022-23 season, earning an All-Star selection as a result. Even though Utah hasn’t returned to the postseason since his arrival, Markkanen provides their fans with high-level performances as a quality scorer and shooter.</p><p>His services would be beneficial for teams looking to compete for titles, which had Simmons give his thoughts on what’s going on with Markkanen and the Jazz. According to him on his podcast, he thinks <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-bill-simmons-podcast/id1043699613?l=en-GB&amp;i=1000712054902" rel="noopener">there is a chance he would be available</a> if the right offer appears.</p><p>“Around the league, people seem to feel like Markkanen isn’t not available…I’m on high alert with Utah. Austin took that job. He had a quote in the press conference that I thought kind of gave me one of those where he was just like, yeah, we’re not tanking anymore. He just said it matter of factly. It’s like, all right,” Simmons said.</p><p>“I would not be surprised if they get aggressive and said, okay, let’s start coming up with something here. Like, let’s figure out how to piece two for one. And if the one isn’t a star, at least it’s somebody who raises…But they’re like in that spike. Meanwhile, Utah was unable to construct a roster that was able to withstand the better teams in the Western Conference. As a result, Utah has remained in the NBA lottery since 2023.</p><p>After three seasons with the Jazz, Markkanen is averaging 23 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He is shooting 47.3% from the field, including 38% from beyond the arc, and 88.3% from the free-throw line.</p><p>The Jazz have solid players in Markkanen, Walker Kessler, Jordan Clarkson, and Colin Sexton among others. However, it is clear they will have to make moves through the draft and free agency to return to playoff contention. And Bill Simmons is already thinking of trades to split up the threesome.</p><p>Once the 76ers signed George in the offseason, fans and analysts begged Philadelphia, like most years, as a contender to get out of the Eastern Conference and potentially compete for a championship. Unfortunately, nothing even resembling that happened, as Embiid and George both began the year injured, and it never got much better from there. All three of Embiid, George, and Maxey missed time due to injury — they missed a combined 134 games this season — and rarely shared the court.</p><p>As a result, the 76ers sunk to near to the bottom of the Eastern Conference and never recovered. Philadelphia finished the season 24-58, which was bad enough for fifth-worst in the NBA. The bright side is that the record, as well as some lottery luck, landed the Sixers the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-rumors-philly-draft-trade-strategy-reiterated-marc-stein"> could prove to be valuable in a trade.</a></p><p>That last part is especially intriguing to Simmons, whose infatuation with hypothetical trades is well-documented. And in this case, the popular NBA podcaster wondered <a href="https://youtu.be/tssP_fIV6mI?list=PLYHjB_Comy8RBysZtkqGfChKg1eUdYx4C&amp;t=3587" rel="noopener">aloud if a trade of</a> Paul George and No. 3 pick for<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-rumors-lauri-markkanen-trade-interest-again-theres-catch"> Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen</a> would be mutually beneficial.</p><p>“I don’t even know if that makes sense for Philly, but I just wonder if Philly is looking at trades like that with the third pick,” Simmons said.</p><p>“I hate that trade for everyone involved,” Zach Lowe responded, before expanding how he might tweak it.</p><p>“Now, if you tell me I’m the Jazz and I can reroute Paul George somewhere else for something less damaging to my cap sheet for the next three years and I get the number three pick, then it starts to be somewhat interesting to me,” Lowe said. “But Markkanen is pretty good, and the Paul George contract is not so good, although I think it will get rehabbed this year. I think we’ll think differently of Paul George in about six months.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-news-utah-hires-danny-ainge-celtics-lead-front-office"> Jazz’s recent hiring of Austin Ainge</a> as president of basketball operations, as well as Ainge’s comments, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/utah-jazz/jazz-news-new-utah-executive-shuts-down-tanking-narrative">signal the organization is shifting away from tanking</a> and into a more competitive direction. While the ping pong balls weren’t quite kind enough to land Cooper Flagg, they did give Daryl Morey a top-tier asset to work with this offseason.</p><p>Philadelphia surely has no plans of going into a rebuild. With Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain returning from injury next season, this squad is likely just a move or two away from being a contender in the Eastern Conference when healthy. As a result, Morey and the rest of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-daryl-morey-seems-end-speculation-plan-no-3-pick">76ers’ front office could look to move that pick</a> along with Paul George to upgrade the roster.</p><p>The 76ers will be looking at stars on the trade market, even though it’s unclear which ones may be available this offseason. However, Kevin Durant and Lauri Markkanen are two players that Philly <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45179882/2025-nba-mock-draft-projecting-all-59-picks-post-combine-cooper-flagg-dallas-mavericks" rel="noopener">could be targeting</a>, according to Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo of ESPN.</p><p>“Some teams expect the Sixers to be active in trade conversations, with names such as Kevin Durant (Phoenix) and Lauri Markkanen (Utah) as potential targets in packages that could include Paul George and the No. 3 pick,” Givony and Woo wrote. “Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey has made a career of being active and aggressive on the trade front, but historically, it’s rare to see a top-three pick being traded.”</p><p>Any trade involving the third pick would be a big risk for the 76ers to take, as it would be a bet on a roster that has not been able to stay healthy in recent years. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-paul-george-drops-scrambling-admission-joel-embiids-unavailability">Embiid specifically has seen the injury concerns</a> ratchet up over the last couple of seasons, so mortgaging the future to support this current version of the team is a big gamble.</p><p>On the other hand, adding another star such as Durant or Markkanen to a roster that already includes Embiid and a pair of promising young guards could easily make the 76ers into a contender in an Eastern Conference that will be in flux during the 2025-26 season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The bet was that the Jazz would be picking high in the NBA Draft as a result of their struggles, but that isn’t necessarily the case.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/jazz-news-dwayne-wade-sends-reminder-after-utah-heartbreaking-lottery-fall">ping pong balls were not kind to the Jazz</a> at all, and now Utah will be picking No. 5 overall despite having the worst record in the NBA in 2024-25 at 17-65. While that is still a good pick in a very good draft class, it is far from the haul that is Cooper Flagg or Dylan Harper at the very top.</p><p>Now, the Jazz enter another offseason wondering what to do with their roster, especially star forward Lauri Markkanen. The former Cleveland Cavaliers standout has been the subject of trade rumors for years now, but his value is lower now after a contract extension, some injuries and a down season overall.</p><p>Still, if the Jazz want to move completely toward their young core with whoever they add at No. 5 this summer, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-1-0-who-goes-no-2-after-mavericks-cooper-flagg">could still look to move off of Markkanen</a> and other teams will be interested, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints</p><p>“Rival teams are expected to once again inquire about Lauri Markkanen, but his trade value has decreased significantly after signing an extension last summer,” Siegel wrote. “The massive haul Utah could have received for Markkanen last summer isn’t expected to be available this time around.”</p><p>While Markkanen’s production may not look like what it did a year or two ago, his skillset would still fit right in with what a contending team would want at the forward spot. The Arizona product is an elite shooter and has some shot creation chops off the bounce, which he has gotten a chance to refine over the last few years on a bad Jazz team.</p><p>Markkanen isn’t elite on defense, but he can slide his feet and has very good positional size, which should make him an asset for any team at the very least. Especially now that the price in a possible trade for him has gone down, expect a lot of very good teams to be calling Utah about its franchise player in the coming months.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
