Further updates will be provided as appropriate.”</p><p>In the first quarter of the 76ers’ 118-105 loss to the Raptors, Walker <a href="https://x.com/Eurohoopsnet/status/1900103877053096152" rel="noopener">jumped for a rebound and slammed his head</a> right on the floor of Scotiabank Arena. He immediately went back to the locker room and was ruled out for the rest of the game. However, one low-risk, high-reward move that the reigning champion <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-boston-grade-lonnie-walker-nba-free-agency-signing">Celtics did make is to bring in free agent Lonnie Walker IV</a>.</p><p>Walker addressed <a href="https://x.com/RealBobManning/status/1838671388548251687" rel="noopener">his role</a> on the team in an interview with NBC Sports Boston during the Celtics’ media availability on Monday per Bobby Manning of CLNS Media.</p><p>“I’m still on an E10. I’m not on a guaranteed contract yet, so right now I’m really just trying to earn that guaranteed contract and play to the best of my ability.”</p><p>Walker is absolutely correct. This offseason, Walker signed a fully non-guaranteed one-year Exhibit 10 contract. During training camp and the preseason, it will be up to him to prove that he deserves a guaranteed contract and a spot on the Celtics’ 15-man roster.</p><p>14 of the Celtics’ 15 roster spots are accounted for. That means that Walker will likely be competing with Ron Harper Jr., Tristan Enaruna and Dmytro Skapintsev, who all also signed E-10 contracts, for the final spot. Walker has the most NBA experience of that group, and should be considered an early favorite to make the roster. Despite that, Walker’s comments show that he is taking the preseason seriously and understands the position he is in. Even if he does make the roster, minutes will be difficult to come by. It seems like Walker is up for the challenge.</p><h2><b>What Lonnie Walker IV’s role with the Boston Celtics could be</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/09-24-24-walker-image.jpeg"><figcaption>© Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-kevin-ollie-explains-lonnie-walker-disappearance-hot-start">Walker spent last season with the Brooklyn Nets</a> before signing with the Celtics this offseason. Through 58 games while averaging 17.4 minutes per game, the 6-4, 25-year-old guard scored 9.7 points per game and shot 38.4% from three. Walker also spent a year with the Los Angeles Lakers after being drafted by San Antonio Spurs out of Miami with the 18th overall pick of the 2018 draft and playing the first four seasons of his career in San Antonio. Walker scored a career-high 12.1 points per game as the Spurs’ sixth man in the 2021-2022 season.</p><p>While Walker will likely not play a significant role for the Celtics if he does indeed earn a guaranteed contract, he can still provide value with his three point shooting and athleticism off the bench. The Celtics do not have a lot of guard depth off the bench beyond Payton Pritchard. Brad Stevens and Boston’s front office made it their mission to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-2024-offseason-recap-big-spending-impact-potential-dynasty">bring back every key player</a> from this past year’s title team, yet they recently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-boston-adding-ex-lakers-weapon-two-peat-pursuit">added Lonnie Walker IV late in free agency.</a></p><p>Walker, who has always been known for his scoring abilities as a shooting guard off the bench, recently spent the last two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers. He proved to be a valuable scoring weapon for both organizations, which is why it was shocking to see teams passing up on him in free agency despite having the ability to sign him to a minimum contract.</p><p>Although the Celtics ended up signing Walker at the end of August, he did not get a standard deal with the team to fill their final roster spot. Walker signed an Exhibit 10 contract in Boston, meaning the 25-year-old guard will be eligible to receive a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5731401/2024/08/29/lebron-james-jayson-tatum-netflix-celtics-nba-the-bounce/" rel="noopener">substantial bonus</a> if he is waived after training camp and ends up playing for the Maine Celtics in the NBA G League. As of right now, this appears to be the most likely of scenarios, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.</p><p>If Walker is to be waived by the Celtics while on his Exhibit 10 contract in training camp, then the former first-round pick will still be a player Boston can keep their eyes on in the G League. In 58 games, all of which he came off the bench in, Walker averaged 9.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and 38.4 percent from three-point range.</p><p>No matter where he is on the court, Walker has proven to always be a scoring option, which makes him a really intriguing addition for the Celtics. Even though he has agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract, the dynamic guard can still prove to be an impactful talent in Boston.</p><p>If there is one weakness that the Celtics have, it is their lack of bench depth. Tatum, Brown, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis make up arguably the best starting group in the league, but if Boston gets hit hard with injuries, their depth is not all that impressive. Al Horford, Luke Kornet, Payton Pritchard, and Sam Hauser were the only four players to see legitimate minutes off the bench in the second unit last season, as Xavier Tillman Sr. joined the mix in the playoffs due to Porzingis’ injury.</p><p>Since the Celtics don’t necessarily have a real scoring weapon on their bench, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-boston-grade-lonnie-walker-nba-free-agency-signing">Walker could actually prove to be useful</a>. Yet, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens worked his magic on a tight budget <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1828949505711939938?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1828949505711939938%7Ctwgr%5E6b3fbdeaf906d0116504fca359b7dee51f1819e3%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.clutchpoints.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D3009796action%3Dedit" rel="noopener">and landed</a> former Brooklyn <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-boston-adding-ex-lakers-weapon-two-peat-pursuit">Nets guard Lonnie Walker IV</a> on a one-year, Exhibit 10 contract, per ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>With an E10 deal, Walker can earn a bonus of up to $75,000 if he’s waived following Celtics training camp or spends at least 60 days in Portland playing in the G League with the Maine Celtics. Although the former first-round pick is still in the prime of his career, he’ll have to fight for the 15th and final spot on Boston’s roster ahead of the 2024-25 regular season.</p><p>But before training camp begins in late September, let’s look at the Celtics’ move for Walker and grade Stevens’ offseason efforts.</p><h2><b>Grading the Celtics’ Lonnie Walker signing</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Lonnie-Walker-IV-shooting.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With this most recent acquisition, Stevens and the rest of Boston’s front office have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-brad-stevens-reveals-moment-kristaps-porzingis-trade-essential">revealed a pattern</a> in their free agency moves. When a certain player goes off against the C’s, they take notice and monitor their foe’s availability during the offseason.</p><p>For instance, center Kristaps Porzingis absolutely torched Boston at the end of the 2022-23 campaign. To close the regular season, he dropped 32 points (14-21 from the field), 13 rebounds, and six assists in just 34 minutes during the Wizards’ 130-111 upset win over the Celtics. A few months later, Stevens took a huge swing and traded Celtics veteran Marcus Smart for the Latvian big man. This monumental decision gave Boston a dominant shot-blocker who efficiently scored on the other end of the floor and it was one of the first steps that helped secure banner no. 18.</p><p>The Celtics also got forward Oshae Brissett, point guard Dalano Banton, and a few other subtle additions after they put on a show against Boston with their former teams. While Banton is currently with the Portland Trail Blazers and Brissett is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-boston-forward-makes-significant-contract-decision-nba-title-win">likely leaving the Green Team</a> this summer, they’re both a part of a clear trend that could now be carried on by Walker.</p><p>With Brooklyn, the 25-year-old enjoyed playing opposite of the Celtics. Even though Boston dominated the head-to-head matchup, winning all four of its meetings with the Nets last season, Walker performed well. These games didn’t amount to much for Brooklyn, but they likely caught the attention of Stevens and earned Walker a shot with a championship contender.</p><p>His showings against the C’s weren’t flukes either. Off the bench, he averaged 9.7 points in under 18 minutes per game. Moreover, in 2o23 Walker displayed his talents in the playoffs against the dynastic Golden State Warriors. The ex-Los Angeles Laker dazzled in the Western Conference Semifinals, recording all 15 of his points in the fourth quarter of Game 4 en route to a 104-101 comeback win.</p><p>Following this taste of postseason glory, it must’ve been difficult for Walker to go to New York and join a subpar team with plans for rebuilding and not the playoffs. Either he impresses like he did in previous seasons and makes the team or is waived (or sent to the G League) with little harm done to the Green Team’s pockets.</p><p>If Walker qualifies for the final roster, he should be able to gel with the current rotations. The former McDonald’s All-American came off the bench in all 58 of his games last season, meaning he’s not expecting a starting role in Boston. That works for the Celtics, as guys like Jrue Holiday, Jaylen Brown, and former San Antonio Spurs teammate Derrick White would all receive the starting nod over Walker.</p><p>Once again, it seems like Stevens has brought in a hungry, skilled player without sacrificing much. And if the best-case scenario occurs, Walker could provide scoring in droves off the pine and bolster an already star-studded group aiming for back-to-back titles.</p><p><b>Grade: A</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After signing for the minimum, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-lonnie-walker-iv-reveals-reason-league-leading-stat-breakout">Brooklyn Nets guard emerged</a> as one of the team’s top offensive threats to open the year, averaging 15.7 points on 50/47/79 shooting splits over his first 15 appearances.</p><p>The former first-round pick <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-film-study-under-radar-brooklyn-signing-lonnie-walker-iv-prominent-role-2023-24">presented an efficient three-level scorer</a> in the Nets’ second unit. Despite the Nets ranking 24th in offense under interim head coach Kevin Ollie, the 25-year-old has averaged 11.6 minutes over their last eight games, the 11th-most on the team. The declining trend culminated in a DNP-CD Wednesday at Washington despite Cam Johnson and Dennis Smith Jr. missing the game.</p><p>Ollie revealed the reason for Walker’s lack of playing time ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Chicago Bulls.</p><p>“It’s part of the rotation,” the coach said. “I keep telling him it’s not all just about scoring. It’s about doing all the other little things: playing defense, rebounding, making the right plays, and that’s just how it is. So having him continue to understand that. He has <a href="https://dunksandthrees.com/player/1629022">posted a -0.4</a> defensive estimated plus-minus, ranking in the 64th percentile among shooting guards, per DunksandThrees.com.</p><p>His rebounding, however, has left something to be desired. Walker is averaging 4.3 rebounds per 36 minutes, the third-fewest on the Nets, ahead of just Cam Thomas and Dennis Schroder.</p><p>The Miami product has struggled mightily in recent weeks amid his minutes decrease. Walker is averaging 2.8 points on 23.7 percent shooting from the field (9-of-38) and 9.5 percent from three (2-of-21) over his last eight appearances. Despite the dramatic turn of events, the former first-round pick is <a href="https://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/nets/nets-lonnie-walker-iv-ljfxoree" rel="noopener">rolling with the punches</a> in his sixth NBA season, per Newsday’s Evan Barnes.</p><p>“I don’t think it negatively affects me. You might have your ups and downs, your days where you might not feel as much,” he said. “But for the most part, I got a great family around me that really supports me and I understand that there’s light at the end of the tunnel… It’s all about growth. I think that’s something that I’m trying to accomplish.</p><p>“I haven’t reached my prime yet, in my opinion. So just trying to reach that moment and continue to get those building blocks.”</p><p>Lonnie Walker IV’s diminished role does not bode well for the prospect of him returning to Brooklyn in 2024-25. The Nets currently have $125 million committed to 11 players on their books for next season. With the luxury tax set for $172 million and Nic Claxton expected to command a deal north of $20 million annually, Brooklyn could have roughly $27 million to fill three remaining roster spots.</p><p>Walker’s play early this year should be enough to earn him a raise above the minimum. After missing the team’s last three games due to left hamstring tightness, Lonnie Walker might return for Saturday’s matchup with the San Antonio Spurs, according to head coach Jacque Vaughn.</p><p>Walker <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-brooklyn-will-remain-shorthanded-vs-cavs-with-cam-johnson-lonnie-walker-iv-sidelined" rel="noopener">has been the Nets</a>‘ most productive bench scorer this season, averaging 12.3 points per game on 48/44/77 shooting splits. However, he’s struggled to stay on the floor, missing 17 games due to a left hamstring strain. The offseason minimum signing revealed before that injury that he had been playing through a painful left knee ailment since Brooklyn’s second game of the season.</p><p>Cam Johnson has been ruled out for Saturday’s contest after missing the Nets’ last three games due to left adductor tightness. Like Walker, Johnson has battled multiple lower extremity injuries early this season. The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter missed all of training camp due to a left hamstring strain. He returned for Brooklyn’s season opener but suffered a left calf strain that sidelined him for seven games.</p><p>After signing a four-year, $94.5 million <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/cam-johnson-2023-free-agency" rel="noopener">contract this summer</a>, Johnson has averaged 13.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 46/40/74 shooting splits over 40 games this season.</p><p>Dorian Finney-Smith has missed Brooklyn’s last six games due to an ankle sprain and is considered day-to-day. Day’Ron Sharpe <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-dayron-sharpe-miss-at-least-two-weeks-left-knee-injury">has been out for over a month</a> due to a hyperextended knee, and it remains unclear when he will return.</p><p>“Still no bodies still around him. He’s been more 1-on-1 with a coach,” Vaughn said of Sharpe’s recovery. “He’s been able to get up and down a little more since the last time I updated you guys. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics have seen just the slightest amount of slippage in their winning ways recently. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jaylen-brown-considering-nba-slam-dunk-contest-participation" rel="noopener">Although the Celtics</a> defeated what was left of the Memphis Grizzlies by 40 points Sunday, the team did suffer two rather dispiriting losses in the past ten days, ironically to both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-marcus-smart-admission-td-garden" rel="noopener">though Tatum has</a> continued to play at an MVP level all the while.</p><p>While they certainly would appear to have the foundations of a championship level of team, the Celtics are <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/andrew-wiggins-appears-to-be-warriors-biggest-trade-chip-but-a-deal-remains-a-challenge-225816934.html" rel="noopener">apparently not content</a> ahead of the upcoming NBA trade deadline Thursday, and some interesting names have been thrown into the rumor mill who could theoretically provide Boston with some additional depth on the wings.</p><p>“Boston has been weighing various options who could deepen the Celtics’ bench, according to league sources. Boston will likely be limited to adding pieces through its $6.25 million traded-player exception with which the Celtics could bring on a veteran target such as Otto Porter Jr., sources said,” reported Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. “Another name on Boston’s radar: Nets guard Lonnie Walker, who’s generated a wealth of interest from playoff teams while playing well on a minimum contract, sources said.”</p><p>It’s easy to see why the Celtics’ brass would have interest in both Lonnie Walker and Otto Porter Jr. Porter Jr. played an underrated role in the Golden State Warriors most recent title run in 2022, while Lonnie Walker singlehandedly won the Lakers a playoff game last year with a fourth quarter takeover against those same Warriors.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Cam Johnson (left adductor tightness) and Lonnie Walker (left hamstring tightness), who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-brooklyn-loses-key-scorer-lethargic-loss-stephen-curry-warriors" rel="noopener">exited Monday’s loss</a> to the Golden State Warriors and did not return, were both ruled out.</p><p>Their absences mean Jacque Vaughn’s squad will be without four rotation players vs. Dallas, with Dorian Finney-Smith and Day’Ron Sharpe already sidelined. Vaughn said Johnson and Walker both received MRIs, which are still being assessed.</p><p>Johnson, who signed a four-year, $94.5 million contract this offseason, missed Brooklyn’s entire preseason after suffering a left hamstring strain days before the start of training camp. He returned for the season opener but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-cam-johnson-calf-injury-status-vs-celtics-in-season-tournament">suffered a left calf strain</a> that sidelined him for seven games. The 6-foot-8 forward has averaged 13.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists on 46/40/74 shooting splits over 40 appearances this season.</p><p>Walker missed 17 games early this season due to a strain in his left hamstring. Before the injury, he revealed he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-lonnie-walker-iv-reveals-painful-knee-ailment-after-injury-scare-vs-wizards" rel="noopener">playing through a painful left knee ailment</a> since Brooklyn’s second game of the year.
