In another injury-riddled season for the veteran guard, Ball averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 steals in 35 games last season. However, the now 27-year-old has had consistent trouble with his left knee and joins the Cavs after a 38-game season with the Chicago Bulls.</p><p>Considering that was after two full seasons missed, the Cavs have every right to be careful with his playing time, something they seem intent on being.The Cavaliers are implementing a workload management schedule for Lonzo Ball to help him return to form while minimizing risk,</p><p>According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Ball is unlikely to play in back-to-backs and will have his minutes carefully managed during stretches <a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/533CSeuiEK6Yun8I45mM50" rel="noopener">that feature multiple games in a short span.</a></p><p>“I know that the Cavs are having conversations as an organization about no back-to-backs for Lonzo Ball. If it’s three games in four nights, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo. If it’s five in seven, be cognizant of that when it comes to Lonzo,” Fedor said on the Wine and Gold Podcast.</p><p>The Cavaliers expect Ball to step into the role vacated by Ty Jerome, who had a breakout year but has since joined the Memphis Grizzlies. On paper, Ball may be the perfect replacement, and even a considerable upgrade.</p><p>However, what that translates in practice will be down to how well Lonzo Ball re-integrates into the NBA grind. Having only played 35 games since January 2022, Ball remains in recovery mode despite continued workouts and individual training. The player himself is aiming high, claiming that getting a ring will be the aim.</p><p>“[The Cavs] were [the No. 1 seed] in the East last year, so everybody knows that it’s pretty much ring or nothing,” <a href="https://cavsnation.com/news/cavs-news-lonzo-ball-great-situation-bulls-trade">Lonzo Ball said.</a></p><p>For now however, the player will be focussed on getting back to his best. He showed flashes of his past self last season, averaging 7.6 points, 3.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game on more than 50% shooting efficiency. Generally, straight swaps involve a straight salary match while taking into account other details such as the number of years left on player contracts and future expectations.</p><p>However, this deal, according to journalist Keith Smith, was facilitated using a rather sneaky salary cap rule which allowed the two teams to participate without altering their financial outlook for the upcoming season.</p><p>Due to an injury protection clause in Lonzo Ball’s contract, Chicago was compelled to utilize $11 million of their $17.18 million traded player exception (TPE) from the earlier Zach LaVine–Sacramento Kings trade to absorb Okoro’s contract. Hence, instead of processing the swap as a traditional salary match, this maneuver not <a href="https://x.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1945339934409461945" rel="noopener">only adhered to the clause restrictions</a> but also generated a brand-new $11 million TPE for Cleveland, offering them added flexibility moving forward.</p><p>The Bulls’ LaVine exception, originally worth $17.18 million, has $6.18 million remaining and is set to expire on February 3, 2026, per Sportrac. On the other hand, Cleveland’s freshly created TPE from the Okoro trade is valued at $11 million and expires on July 6, 2026. </p><p>The Cavaliers also possess another exception from the Georges Niang trade with Atlanta, valued at $8.5 million and available through early February 2026. While the specific language of Ball’s clause has not been disclosed, it is understood that it impacted Chicago’s ability to process the trade without invoking the TPE mechanism.</p><p>This simple workaround effectively leveraged the LaVine exception and turned a simple swap into a nuanced agreement. Lonzo Ball, who played just 35 games last season after returning from a two-and-a-half-year absence due to persistent knee injuries, had signed a two-year, $20 million extension earlier in February.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/chicago-bulls/chicago-bulls-grade-lonzo-ball-isaac-okoro-trade">Okoro, on the other hand, is owed $11 million</a> for the upcoming season and joins a Bulls squad looking to shore up its defensive identity on the wing.
