That player happens to be J.J. Barea.</p><p>Barea was Doncic’s teammate for two seasons from 2018 to 2020, being a veteran mentor to the young star. Doncic started out as a rookie while Barea was playing the second-to-last year of his career.</p><p>NBA insider Marc Stein provided intel on what the Nuggets might be planning to revamp their coaching staff. One of their options is Barea, <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1939143873189568619" rel="noopener">believing they have strong interest</a> in the former guard.</p><p>“The Nuggets, I’m told, have also shown strong interest in ex-Mavericks guard J.J. Barea for a spot on Adelman’s staff,” Stein said.</p><p>“Barea has been HC for multiple teams in his native Puerto Rico’s Baloncesto Superior Nacional.”</p><h2><b>What lies ahead for Nuggets this offseason</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/nuggets.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It would be an interesting move for the Nuggets to pursue Luka Doncic’s former teammate in J.J. Barea to add to their coaching staff. His international coaching experience may prove to be valuable to Denver’s prospects of managing players who come abroad.</p><p>The Nuggets are coming off a 50-32 record throughout the 2024-25 season. They reached the West Semifinals after beating the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round in seven games. However, their season came to an end after falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games, who went on to win the title.</p><p>This marks the second consecutive exit from the second round of the playoffs for the Nuggets. They haven’t made a deep run since their title run in 2023, which has been difficult after losing key pieces of their championship core.</p><p>Denver has three players to address this summer. Russell Westbrook, DeAndre Jordan and Vlatko Cancar may be free agents. Westbrook has a player option to pick up or decline but improving their depth will be a point of emphasis.</p><p>The Nuggets hope to return to championship contention, especially with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray still in command. That changed, of course, when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/lakers-news-mavericks-luka-doncic-anthony-davis-trade">Mavs traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers</a> this past February. The Mavs were saved by luck (literally) after overcoming a 1.8 percent chance to land the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, leading to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-dallas-officially-selects-cooper-flagg-2025-nba-draft">selection of Cooper Flagg</a> this past Wednesday.</p><p>Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic were past Mavericks franchise superstars. Cooper Flagg is expected to become the next face of the franchise in Dallas. However, that doesn’t mean Doncic and Flagg should be compared to one another.</p><p>Comparisons have begun to surface between the two. Other than their connections to the Mavs, though, there simply are not many similarities between Flagg and Doncic.</p><h2><b>Luka Doncic, Cooper Flagg feature different styles of play</b></h2><p>Doncic is an elite three-level scorer. His defense is, well, questionable at best. Doncic plays the game of basketball with passion, isn’t afraid to talk trash and argue with referees, but his effort on the defensive end of the floor played a role in Dallas deciding to move in a different direction. Mavs GM Nico Harrison consistently used the phrase “defense wins championships” to defend moving on from Doncic.</p><p>Flagg, meanwhile, features a balanced attack on the floor. He isn’t necessarily elite at any one thing (yet), but he’s extremely good at almost everything. Flagg features the ability to score from anywhere on the court, he plays the game hard and has a much higher defensive ceiling than Doncic. From purely an athletic standpoint, Flagg gives the Mavs more than Doncic in that sense.</p><p>At 6’9″, Flagg gives Dallas versatility as well. He can guard multiple positions. The Mavericks will be able to trust him on opposing teams’ best players. Doncic is not a candidate to guard the best player on another team, though.</p><p>We aren’t here to purely criticize Doncic, however. He is the better offensive player without question. “Luka Magic” is almost impossible to contain.</p><p>Flagg can score at all three levels, though. He shot 48.1 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point land in his first (and only) season at Duke. The 18-year-old’s offensive game could end up becoming elite at some point down the road.</p><h2><b>Flagg features an MVP ceiling</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cooper-Flagg_ee1fbb.jpg"><figcaption>© Bob Donnan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Luka Doncic and Cooper Flagg are both great players. Comparing Flagg to Doncic is unfair, though. Luka is a guard who focuses on offense, while Flagg — although he can play guard — is a forward with both offensive and defensive prowess.</p><p>In the end, the media is going to do what the media does and compare the two players. After all, it’s almost as if Doncic is passing the torch to Flagg — even if it’s been passed unwillingly since it came to fruition after a trade.</p><p>Flagg features the ceiling of an MVP. Doncic failed to win the award with the Mavericks (although he probably could have won it in 2023-24). The comparisons between the two are expected, but that doesn’t make them right. Placing that kind of pressure on an 18-year-old doesn’t need to happen, yet we know it will.</p><p>Regardless, Flagg is focused on what he can control. He isn’t worried about outside noise and expectations. Flagg is going to place his attention on working hard and playing the game of basketball to the best of his ability. People will continue to talk, make predictions, draw comparisons and more, but Flagg is simply preparing to begin his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

According to Dave McMenamin ESPN, Doncic <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45598239/nba-offseason-2025-hearing-luka-lebron-los-angeles-lakers-offseason" rel="noopener">is still motivated</a> by everything that happened following the Mavericks’ shocking decision to trade him to the Lakers in February.</p><p>“Doncic remains motivated by how the Dallas Mavericks treated him in the aftermath of the trade and how the Lakers’ season ended, and has committed to an offseason training and nutrition program, sources told ESPN,” McMenamin wrote in a recent article.</p><p>Doncic now has a full offseason with his new team. In February, he had to immediately make the adjustment to playing for his first franchise other than the Mavericks in the NBA. Doncic displayed signs of his MVP-caliber play in LA, but one has to imagine he will take a step forward after a full offseason of preparation with the Lakers.</p><p>The 26-year-old averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He also shot 43.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from beyond the arc. Injuries limited Doncic during the 2024-25 season, but he played well while on the floor. When healthy, Luka is an MVP candidate.</p><p>The Lakers’ outlook is intriguing. With LeBron James and Luka Doncic leading the way, they will likely be a serious contender in 2025-26. LA also needs to think about the future, though. They are beginning the process of building around Doncic while also still trying to compete in the near future.</p><p>If Doncic does indeed have extra motivation — which is being reported — he may even take a step forward. Although Doncic is becoming a veteran in the NBA, he still is only 26 years old. Luka could realistically get even better and that is a frightening thought for opposing teams.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
