After former <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-is-ime-udoka-still-employed-by-boston-after-joe-mazzullas-extension">Celtics head coach Ime Udoka was dismissed from his post</a> due to his involvement in an improper relationship just days before the start of training camp, Mazzulla was asked to step up as the interim head coach. Naturally, it took him some time to adjust to the new role during the 2022-23 season, but he wasn’t alone in his venture into unfamiliar territory.</p><p>Veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon — who had never truly played for a major market team before — was dealt to the Celtics in July of 2022. Although the Atlanta native was used to the postseason, being in Boston is notably different from Indiana and Milwaukee.</p><p>Brogdon wasn’t fazed by the new digs or the bigger stage, as he went on to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-malcolm-brogdon-wins-sixth-man-of-the-year-award">become the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year with the Celtics</a>. Alongside Mazzulla, he learned more and more about what it means to be a Celtic. However, his time in Boston was cut short due to nagging injuries and the front office’s desire to shake things up after falling short in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals.</p><p>The C’s ultimately traded Brogdon in October of 2023, and his health issues persisted. The ex-Celtic played just 63 games over the course of two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards, respectively. The 2025-26 season could have been a potential turning point for him since he joined the New York Knicks, an expected championship contender in the wide-open Eastern Conference. Yet, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-malcolm-brogdon-retires-2025-26-season">Brogdon shocked the basketball world by announcing his retirement</a> on Wednesday afternoon.</p><h2><b>What did Joe Mazzulla say about Malcolm Brogdon’s retirement?</b></h2><p>Ahead of the Celtics’ preseason finale against the Toronto Raptors, Mazzulla expressed his respect for his former player.</p><p>“Obviously, he was the Sixth Man of the Year — it was our first year together,” he recalled. “I appreciate the grace that he showed and the patience that he showed and the openness that he showed for, you know, coming to a place and then working with a first-time coach. In fact, one of the first things he mentioned after clinching an NBA title in 2024 was how he wanted to thank all the Celtics who he worked with and who came before him for their help in capturing banner no. 18.</p><p>And while Mazzulla didn’t specifically mention Brogdon, the decorated guard was surely a part of his gratitude.</p><p>“I look at him and look at a guy that kind of has an identity and knows who he is and will be able to transition into anything that he does because of his work ethic, his mentality, but also how he just takes pride in learning and being well-educated,” Mazzulla complimented. “So, I think anything he does, he’ll be good at. Brodgon wrote a statement regarding his retirement, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.</p><p>“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” Brogdon wrote. “I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards. I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”</p><p>The Knicks signed Brogdon earlier in September as they wanted to add depth to their guard room. Brogdon played in four preseason games.</p><p>Brogdon played for the Washington Wizards last season, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds, but only appeared in 24 games. This would have been his 10th season in the league, and it was expected that he would have <a href="https://x.com/sbondynba/status/1978557060078797039?s=46" rel="noopener">made the final roster</a>, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.</p><p>“Malcolm Brogdon’s sudden retirement is a shocker. He was going to make the Knicks final roster and said in Abu Dhabi he was expecting to be an impact rotation player. But a career in the NBA took a toll, physically and mentally. And I heard it dawned on him in camp that some of the desire/hunger was lost,” Bondy wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>In 2017, Brogdon won Rookie of the Year, and in 2023, he won Sixth Man of the Year, becoming one of two players to win both awards in their career, next to Mike Miller. Brogdon has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, and Wizards.</p><p>Even with the loss of Brogdon, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-jordan-clarkson-sign-contract-new-york-jazz-buyout">Knicks still have solid point guard depth</a> behind Jalen Brunson, with Jordan Clarkson and Miles McBride being the other two options. This could indicate confidence from both players that they will make the 2026 roster.</p><p>If New York does make a trade, one of their four rookies drafted in 2024 could be on the move. The Knicks have received at least one offer for one of their second-year players this week, league sources told ClutchPoints. The expectation of several league sources is that the organization will trade a player for draft capital to clear a roster spot.</p><p>Jalen Brunson, Miles ‘Deuce’ McBride, and new additions in Jordan Clarkson and Brogdon would give the team depth at guard. This could logjam incoming second-year guard Tyler Kolek behind the group of veteran ball handlers. Moving Kolek could afford the 24-year-old opportunity that he would not get in New York. Brogdon played for the Washington Wizards last season where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds but only appeared in 24 games.</p><p>Last season, he shot a career-low 29% from the 3-point line, but ranked fourth in 3-point field goal percentage the two seasons before that with players who had attempted at least 300 3-point attempts.</p><p>Brogdon is now entering his 10th season in the league, and he should be depth for the Knicks’ guard depth that also includes Jalen Brunson and Jordan Clarkson. The one thing that the Knicks lacked last year was depth behind Brunson, and now they have two quality guards who can come in and give him a break.</p><p>In 2017, Brogdon won Rookie of the Year, and in 2023, he won Sixth Man of the Year, becoming one of two players to win both awards in their career next to Mike Miller. Brogdon has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, and Wizards.</p><p>The Knicks are poised to be a top team once again in the Eastern Conference as they’ve brought back the same team that helped them get to the Conference Finals. The move gives the Lakers the point-of-attack defender that they so desperately needed to help out a backcourt of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.</p><p>Despite this move, the Lakers may not be done adding to their backcourt depth just yet. Recently, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported on the Lakers’ current cap situation and another name they could reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-nba-intel-chris-paul-bradley-beal-marcus-smart-deals">have interest in.</a></p><p>“The Lakers now have 14 players under contract for the 2025-26 season and are just over $1 million from the first-apron tax line. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Dallas Mavericks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Tuesday, it was reported that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-fans-celebrate-kyrie-irvings-next-extension-with-dallas">Dallas Mavericks have come to terms with Kyrie Irving</a> on a contract extension, with Irving declining his $43 million player option for next season to sign a three-year, $119 million deal. While this is shrewd business, provided, of course, that Irving returns to full strength after tearing his ACL in early March, there remains a big void in the Mavericks backcourt, as Irving, at best, may not be back until January.</p><p>At the very least, this Irving extension is structured in a way that allows the Mavericks to open up the taxpayer midlevel exception worth $5.7 million. They aim to use this newfound cap flexibility to try and find a stopgap option at the point, with names such as D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul, Malcolm Brogdon, and Dennis Schroder <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45578603/mavericks-kyrie-irving-declining-player-option-intends-sign-3-year-119-million-contract" rel="noopener">emerging as potential targets</a> for the Mavs in free agency, as per Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>This report tracks with the intel that ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has; according to Siegel, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-4-0-latest-intel-kevin-durant-trade">Mavs “are exploring ways to convince Chris Paul</a> to sign with them in free agency”. Alas, Paul could very well choose to sign elsewhere, which is why Dallas is keeping their options open — hence the potential for someone like Russell, Brogdon, or Schroder to end up with the Mavericks.</p><p>Considering how the Mavericks’ main strength is having a deep frontcourt, they will need a point guard to set the table and get them their touches where they’re comfortable. Paul, among those four, is the best fit when taking this into account.</p><h2><b>Assessing the Mavericks’ need at point guard</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mar-24-2025-Brooklyn-New-York-USA-Dallas-Mavericks-guard-Kyrie-Irving.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Perhaps the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-rumors-dallas-explore-point-guard-market-trades-free-agency">Mavs are also looking for someone</a> to at least be a reasonable facsimile of Irving and his playstyle; Irving is more of a scorer than a playmaker, doing his damage by being one of the best three-level scorers in the entire association.</p><p>Russell’s stock has dipped, but he is the best shooter from beyond the arc among those four and his pull-up threat could be very useful in big Mavericks lineups that should dominate the glass. He also has some experience playing alongside Anthony Davis, so that should help matters as well.</p><p>Brogdon is a locker-room leader and the most efficient scorer of the bunch. Alas, he is a major injury risk; will the Mavericks want someone as injury-prone as Brogdon to cover for their already injured point guard in Irving?</p><p>Schroder provides downhill attacking and is a menace on the defensive end. He too has experience playing alongside Davis. But he is the worst shooter of the four, and the Mavericks may want a more consistent pull-up threat to at least help with the floor-spacing considering how many big men Dallas are going to have to give playing time to.</p><p>All four options for the Mavericks have their merits. It will all boil down to who’s going to be available for them and who’s going to be willing to sign with the team. But if they had the luxury of choice, Russell appears to be their best option if they are unable to sign Paul, if only because he’s the youngest among the four and the Mavs have the defensive weapons to cover for his shortcomings on that end of the floor.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Among those whom the Wizards traded away are Kyle Kuzma, Jonas Valanciunas, and Marvin Bagley III — getting Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart, among others, in return. However, Washington was not able to trade away veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, who is in the final year of his contract worth $22.5 million. Nonetheless, a team that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-clippers-celtics-malcolm-brogdon-botched-trade">nearly traded for Brogdon in the past, the Los Angeles Clippers, remain interested.</a></p><p>It was always going to be difficult for the Clippers to bring Brogdon in via trade. But staying with the Wizards until the end of the season makes no sense for the veteran guard, making a buyout agreement likely. To that end, the Clippers <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1887600280608350216" rel="noopener">will be a huge player</a> for Brogdon’s services, as per Brett Siegel and Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.</p><p>As one would recall, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-malcolm-brogdon-prepared-to-be-a-clipper-twice-this-summer">Clippers nearly pulled off a trade for Brogdon</a> prior to the start of the 2023-24 season. Fresh off a campaign in which he won the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Boston Celtics, LA looked at 32-year-old guard as someone who can initiate offense for the team — the point guard they’ve needed for so long.</p><p>Alas, the Clippers decided to pull out of the trade due to concerns surrounding Brogdon and his health. Brogdon then ended up on the Portland Trail Blazers via the Jrue Holiday trade, and this past offseason, he was moved once again, this time to the Wizards by way of the Deni Avdija deal.</p><p>Brogdon’s health remains a huge question mark, but when available to suit up, he can still help a team with contending aspirations such as the Clippers.</p><h2><b>Clippers look to keep up in the Western Conference arms race</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-la-makes-surprising-bogdan-bogdanovic-terance-mann-trade-with-hawks">Clippers pulled off two trades prior to the deadline</a>, bringing in Bogdan Bogdanovic from the Atlanta Hawks as well as taking a chance on MarJon Beauchamp. Bogdanovic, in particular, could be a huge addition, giving an infusion of shooting and a bit of shot-creation off the Clippers bench.</p><p>Malcolm Brogdon will be such a welcome addition as well. He could back up James Harden quite nicely, and in the aftermath of Kevin Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland’s departures, Brogdon’s skillset as a playmaker who can create his own shot would be a hand and glove fit on Tyronn Lue’s squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jimmy-butler-heat-trade-intel-nba-cap-crisis-siegels-scoop">Wizards will likely buy out</a> the veteran’s contract if they don’t trade him before the Feb. 6 deadline, via NBA insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>“In regards to the NBA buyout market, there are going to be very few options available. [Bruce] Brown could be a prime buyout candidate if he is not traded, and the same can be said for Wizards guard Malcolm Brogdon,” Siegel said. “The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year won’t be with Washington for too much longer, as it’s expected that the two sides will part ways either by trade or a buyout, sources said.”</p><p>Buyouts are when a team and player agree to end their contract early in exchange for the player giving up some salary. Doing so with Brogdon (foot) would give Washington more cap room and more playing time for its other guards. The 32-year-old is averaging 24.8 minutes across 18 games thus far.</p><p>“Brogdon could command a strong market for teams seeking backcourt help if he were to be let go by the Wizards,” Siegel continued. “The Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Clippers, and Hawks would all be attractive destinations for him.”</p><h2><b>Wizards got Malcolm Brogdon as temporary “culture builder”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Portland Trail Blazers traded Brogdon along with Bub Carrington, a 2029 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2030 second-rounder to the Wizards in July for Deni Avdija. The deal worked out for both sides, as Avdija is Portland’s fourth-leading scorer with 14.1 points per game on 46.2% shooting across 28.4 minutes, while Carrington leads all rookies in minutes, assists, and steals. That’s the first thing they said to me, ‘We wanna build culture the right way here, you’re a culture guy, we brought you in here to help us do that.’ In my mind, I’m thinking “Alright, I wanna see you guys do your part,’ and they are, they’re doing their part,” Brogdon said. “And that might not be a 50-win, 60-win season right now, you know.”</p><p>Brogdon praised the organization for investing in player development. However, the 2016 second-round pick admitted that he may not be with the Wizards long-term.</p><p>“That’s something they’re trying to get to pay off, this is a long-term process. That’s three, four, five years down the road, we want the habits we’re building today and the money we’re spending today to pay off at that point,” he continued. “I might not even be here to see it but my job is to make sure we’re taking steps this year to plant those seeds.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-malcolm-brogdon-wins-sixth-man-of-the-year-award">2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year</a> is in the last year of his contract, so he could get traded in-season or walk to a playoff contender in free agency. Brogdon, <a href="https://twitter.com/chasedcsports/status/1840919100941615536" rel="noopener">though, got lucky,</a> via Monumental Sports Network’s Chase Hughes.</p><p>“I feel like I’m coming back home. I’ve always had extended family in DC that I visited growing up, ended up coming to school here, an hour and a half down the road,” he said. “My wife is from Northern Virginia, so man, this is like a full-circle moment for me to be able to play for the Wizards. It’s a team I’ve always wanted to put the jersey on for. I’m super excited to be here.”</p><p>Brogdon had a prolific career on the Virginia Cavaliers from 2011-16. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year earned numerous honors, including ACC Player of the Year (2016), consensus first-team All-American (2016), Naismith award finalist (2016), and three first-team All-ACC selections. The university retired his No. 15 jersey on February 20, 2017.</p><p>With the DMV area playing such an important role in Brogdon’s life, it makes sense why he’s invested in helping a young team in the early stages of a rebuild. However, the 6-foot-4, 229-pounder is still just as valuable on the court as he is in the locker room.</p><p>Brogdon instantly upgrades Washington’s perimeter defense and shooting, as he’s only a year removed from shooting a career-high 44.4% from deep on the Boston Celtics. Players like Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George will all benefit from playing with a reliable “three and D” veteran.</p><p>Whether Brogdon stays for half the season, the whole season, or even re-signs, he has the chance to pay it forward to a city he has a soft spot for.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
