All three contracts are non-guaranteed deals.</p><p>As things stand, only one of Shamet or Brogdon could make the roster. The two would need to compete for the spot in new head coach Mike Brown’s first Knicks training camp. However, some ‘expect’ the team to make a move to <a href="https://x.com/SbondyNBA/status/1966522723028324858" rel="noopener">clear space for both players</a>, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.</p><p>Shamet and Brogdon both had opportunities to sign with other teams but elected to sign non-guaranteed contracts with the Knicks, sources familiar with the situation told ClutchPoints. This could indicate confidence from both players that they will make the 2026 roster.</p><p>If New York does make a trade, one of their four rookies drafted in 2024 could be on the move. The Knicks have received at least one offer for one of their second-year players this week, league sources told ClutchPoints. The expectation of several league sources is that the organization will trade a player for draft capital to clear a roster spot.</p><p>Jalen Brunson, Miles ‘Deuce’ McBride, and new additions in Jordan Clarkson and Brogdon would give the team depth at guard. This could logjam incoming second-year guard Tyler Kolek behind the group of veteran ball handlers. Moving Kolek could afford the 24-year-old opportunity that he would not get in New York. At least one opposing team has demonstrated interest in Kolek this offseason, ClutchPoints also learned.</p><p>Leon Rose’s front office entered 2024-25 knowing that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-process-replace-tom-thibodeau-shouldnt-confuse-fans">the Knicks’ true championship window</a> would open in the 2025-26 season. Drafting four rookies was an integral part of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/sources-2-knicks-draft-targets-keep-eye-on">Knicks’ cap gymnastics last offseason</a>. It allowed them to add Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns in the same summer. Brogdon played for the Washington Wizards last season where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds but only appeared in 24 games.</p><p>Last season, he shot a career-low 29% from the 3-point line, but ranked fourth in 3-point field goal percentage the two seasons before that with players who had attempted at least 300 3-point attempts.</p><p>Brogdon is now entering his 10th season in the league, and he should be depth for the Knicks’ guard depth that also includes Jalen Brunson and Jordan Clarkson. The one thing that the Knicks lacked last year was depth behind Brunson, and now they have two quality guards who can come in and give him a break.</p><p>In 2017, Brogdon won Rookie of the Year, and in 2023, he won Sixth Man of the Year, becoming one of two players to win both awards in their career next to Mike Miller. Brogdon has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, and Wizards.</p><p>The Knicks are poised to be a top team once again in the Eastern Conference as they’ve brought back the same team that helped them get to the Conference Finals. The biggest chance they made was on the bench, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mike-brown-next-head-coach-tom-thibodeau-firing">hiring Mike Brown</a> as the head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau days after they were eliminated in the playoffs.</p><p>If Brown can implement his system and the Knicks can learn it quickly, they could start the season on a high note. Another season with Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns should also build their chemistry after a strong year last season. The move gives the Lakers the point-of-attack defender that they so desperately needed to help out a backcourt of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.</p><p>Despite this move, the Lakers may not be done adding to their backcourt depth just yet. Recently, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel reported on the Lakers’ current cap situation and another name they could reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-nba-intel-chris-paul-bradley-beal-marcus-smart-deals">have interest in.</a></p><p>“The Lakers now have 14 players under contract for the 2025-26 season and are just over $1 million from the first-apron tax line. While the Lakers could pursue other veterans still available in free agency with their final roster spot, they would first need to free up space to do so,” reported Siegel.</p><p>“(Malcolm) Brogdon, a player Los Angeles expressed trade interest in before the 2025 NBA trade deadline, remains on their radar should the team free up extra funds in a small consolidation trade.”</p><p>Brogdon won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award with the Boston Celtics in 2022-23 and has since spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards alongside Smart.</p><h2><b>A busy week for the Lakers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Luka-Doncic-1.jpg"><figcaption>Jonathan Hui-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>By signing Smart, the Lakers added a recent Defensive Player of the Year award winner and a player who has improved his three-point shot dramatically over the course of his career.</p><p>At this point, it’s unclear whether head coach JJ Redick will look to insert Smart into the starting lineup ahead of Reaves in order to give the Lakers more defensive stability or if it will be Smart coming off the bench.</p><p>Another option could be to start Smart alongside Doncic and Reaves, slide LeBron James to the power forward spot and move Rui Hachimura to the bench.</p><p>Whatever option they choose, the Lakers are undeniably a more balanced team now that Smart is on the roster, and the team-friendly nature of the deal makes it so that his well-documented injury history won’t be too much of a risk.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Washington Wizards hold the rights to Brogdon, but they have shown a willingness to listen to teams throughout the league to make a potential sign-and-trade. Brogdon has a history of being a reliable guard, so it’s no wonder many teams are competing for his services. He would be an instant help, wherever he might end up.</p><p>NBA insider, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, reported <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-bradley-beals-future?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=167737792&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email">that eight teams have </a><a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-on-bradley-beals-future?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=167737792&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">contacted</a> the Washington Wizards about Brogdon with varying interest levels. That list includes the Clippers, Suns, Lakers, Warriors, Timberwolves, Pelicans, Kings, and Bucks.</p><p>He also discussed the guard market and said it should become clearer once Beal’s decision is finalized.</p><p>He said, “Other players whose options will likely become clearer once Beal lands include Westbrook, De’Anthony Melton, and Ben Simmons. When healthy, Melton is not an outright point guard but has proven to be a strong point-of-attack defender at multiple positions.”</p><p>Bradley Beal is the big domino waiting in the wings across the NBA in the backcourt. Once Beal is bought out or traded, the floodgates will open, and multiple teams will get involved in the backcourt market, and the fact that Brogdon has such a high list of suitors only strengthens that outlook.</p><p>Injury issues have stunted Brogdon’s growth in the NBA, with him only playing in 70 or more games since his rookie year. He is so sought after because all these teams need depth in the backcourt.</p><p>The Los Angeles Clippers and the Golden State Warriors need another guard behind James Harden and Steph Curry. The Phoenix Suns <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/the-move-suns-must-make-2025-nba-free-agency">are also desperate to find a steadying force at point guard</a> because they are argued not to have a true point guard outside Collin Gillespie.</p><p>The option of returning to the Milwaukee Bucks is also on the table. The Bucks are starving for backcourt help after parting ways with Damian Lillard.</p><p>Teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the New Orleans Pelicans, and the Sacramento Kings do not need as much help in the backcourt as the Clippers, Warriors, Bucks, and the Suns.</p><p>The 32-year-old Brogdon played in only 24 games for the Wizards last season, averaging 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game, while shooting 43.3 percent from the field, but only 28.6 percent from behind the three-point line. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Dallas Mavericks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Tuesday, it was reported that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-fans-celebrate-kyrie-irvings-next-extension-with-dallas">Dallas Mavericks have come to terms with Kyrie Irving</a> on a contract extension, with Irving declining his $43 million player option for next season to sign a three-year, $119 million deal. While this is shrewd business, provided, of course, that Irving returns to full strength after tearing his ACL in early March, there remains a big void in the Mavericks backcourt, as Irving, at best, may not be back until January.</p><p>At the very least, this Irving extension is structured in a way that allows the Mavericks to open up the taxpayer midlevel exception worth $5.7 million. They aim to use this newfound cap flexibility to try and find a stopgap option at the point, with names such as D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul, Malcolm Brogdon, and Dennis Schroder <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45578603/mavericks-kyrie-irving-declining-player-option-intends-sign-3-year-119-million-contract" rel="noopener">emerging as potential targets</a> for the Mavs in free agency, as per Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>This report tracks with the intel that ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has; according to Siegel, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-4-0-latest-intel-kevin-durant-trade">Mavs “are exploring ways to convince Chris Paul</a> to sign with them in free agency”. Alas, Paul could very well choose to sign elsewhere, which is why Dallas is keeping their options open — hence the potential for someone like Russell, Brogdon, or Schroder to end up with the Mavericks.</p><p>Considering how the Mavericks’ main strength is having a deep frontcourt, they will need a point guard to set the table and get them their touches where they’re comfortable. Paul, among those four, is the best fit when taking this into account.</p><h2><b>Assessing the Mavericks’ need at point guard</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mar-24-2025-Brooklyn-New-York-USA-Dallas-Mavericks-guard-Kyrie-Irving.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Perhaps the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-rumors-dallas-explore-point-guard-market-trades-free-agency">Mavs are also looking for someone</a> to at least be a reasonable facsimile of Irving and his playstyle; Irving is more of a scorer than a playmaker, doing his damage by being one of the best three-level scorers in the entire association.</p><p>Russell’s stock has dipped, but he is the best shooter from beyond the arc among those four and his pull-up threat could be very useful in big Mavericks lineups that should dominate the glass. He also has some experience playing alongside Anthony Davis, so that should help matters as well.</p><p>Brogdon is a locker-room leader and the most efficient scorer of the bunch. Alas, he is a major injury risk; will the Mavericks want someone as injury-prone as Brogdon to cover for their already injured point guard in Irving?</p><p>Schroder provides downhill attacking and is a menace on the defensive end. He too has experience playing alongside Davis. But he is the worst shooter of the four, and the Mavericks may want a more consistent pull-up threat to at least help with the floor-spacing considering how many big men Dallas are going to have to give playing time to.</p><p>All four options for the Mavericks have their merits. It will all boil down to who’s going to be available for them and who’s going to be willing to sign with the team. But if they had the luxury of choice, Russell appears to be their best option if they are unable to sign Paul, if only because he’s the youngest among the four and the Mavs have the defensive weapons to cover for his shortcomings on that end of the floor.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Among those whom the Wizards traded away are Kyle Kuzma, Jonas Valanciunas, and Marvin Bagley III — getting Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart, among others, in return. However, Washington was not able to trade away veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, who is in the final year of his contract worth $22.5 million. Nonetheless, a team that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-clippers-celtics-malcolm-brogdon-botched-trade">nearly traded for Brogdon in the past, the Los Angeles Clippers, remain interested.</a></p><p>It was always going to be difficult for the Clippers to bring Brogdon in via trade. But staying with the Wizards until the end of the season makes no sense for the veteran guard, making a buyout agreement likely. To that end, the Clippers <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1887600280608350216" rel="noopener">will be a huge player</a> for Brogdon’s services, as per Brett Siegel and Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.</p><p>As one would recall, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-malcolm-brogdon-prepared-to-be-a-clipper-twice-this-summer">Clippers nearly pulled off a trade for Brogdon</a> prior to the start of the 2023-24 season. Fresh off a campaign in which he won the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Boston Celtics, LA looked at 32-year-old guard as someone who can initiate offense for the team — the point guard they’ve needed for so long.</p><p>Alas, the Clippers decided to pull out of the trade due to concerns surrounding Brogdon and his health. Brogdon then ended up on the Portland Trail Blazers via the Jrue Holiday trade, and this past offseason, he was moved once again, this time to the Wizards by way of the Deni Avdija deal.</p><p>Brogdon’s health remains a huge question mark, but when available to suit up, he can still help a team with contending aspirations such as the Clippers.</p><h2><b>Clippers look to keep up in the Western Conference arms race</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-la-makes-surprising-bogdan-bogdanovic-terance-mann-trade-with-hawks">Clippers pulled off two trades prior to the deadline</a>, bringing in Bogdan Bogdanovic from the Atlanta Hawks as well as taking a chance on MarJon Beauchamp. Bogdanovic, in particular, could be a huge addition, giving an infusion of shooting and a bit of shot-creation off the Clippers bench.</p><p>Malcolm Brogdon will be such a welcome addition as well. He could back up James Harden quite nicely, and in the aftermath of Kevin Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland’s departures, Brogdon’s skillset as a playmaker who can create his own shot would be a hand and glove fit on Tyronn Lue’s squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jimmy-butler-heat-trade-intel-nba-cap-crisis-siegels-scoop">Wizards will likely buy out</a> the veteran’s contract if they don’t trade him before the Feb. 6 deadline, via NBA insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>“In regards to the NBA buyout market, there are going to be very few options available. [Bruce] Brown could be a prime buyout candidate if he is not traded, and the same can be said for Wizards guard Malcolm Brogdon,” Siegel said. “The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year won’t be with Washington for too much longer, as it’s expected that the two sides will part ways either by trade or a buyout, sources said.”</p><p>Buyouts are when a team and player agree to end their contract early in exchange for the player giving up some salary. Doing so with Brogdon (foot) would give Washington more cap room and more playing time for its other guards. The 32-year-old is averaging 24.8 minutes across 18 games thus far.</p><p>“Brogdon could command a strong market for teams seeking backcourt help if he were to be let go by the Wizards,” Siegel continued. “The Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Clippers, and Hawks would all be attractive destinations for him.”</p><h2><b>Wizards got Malcolm Brogdon as temporary “culture builder”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Portland Trail Blazers traded Brogdon along with Bub Carrington, a 2029 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2030 second-rounder to the Wizards in July for Deni Avdija. The deal worked out for both sides, as Avdija is Portland’s fourth-leading scorer with 14.1 points per game on 46.2% shooting across 28.4 minutes, while Carrington leads all rookies in minutes, assists, and steals. Carrington, Kyshawn George, and Bilal Coulibaly are all people who have learned from the former Rookie of the Year.</p><p>At the same time, Brogdon has a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/20242/malcolm-brogdon" rel="noopener">$22.5 million salary</a> on his expiring contract this season, via Spotrac. That along with the former Boston Celtic’s injury issues make him hard to move at the deadline. If they can’t flip him for assets, it makes sense for the Wizards to save money and a roster spot by buying him out now.</p><p>At this stage in their rebuild, keeping older veterans for the entirety of their contracts isn’t the best business move, as they’d likely walk in free agency. That’s why Brogdon, Kyle Kuzma, and Jonas Valanciunas have all been mentioned in the rumor mill. That’s the first thing they said to me, ‘We wanna build culture the right way here, you’re a culture guy, we brought you in here to help us do that.’ In my mind, I’m thinking “Alright, I wanna see you guys do your part,’ and they are, they’re doing their part,” Brogdon said. “And that might not be a 50-win, 60-win season right now, you know.”</p><p>Brogdon praised the organization for investing in player development. However, the 2016 second-round pick admitted that he may not be with the Wizards long-term.</p><p>“That’s something they’re trying to get to pay off, this is a long-term process. That’s three, four, five years down the road, we want the habits we’re building today and the money we’re spending today to pay off at that point,” he continued. “I might not even be here to see it but my job is to make sure we’re taking steps this year to plant those seeds.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-malcolm-brogdon-wins-sixth-man-of-the-year-award">2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year</a> is in the last year of his contract, so he could get traded in-season or walk to a playoff contender in free agency. I’ve always had extended family in DC that I visited growing up, ended up coming to school here, an hour and a half down the road,” he said. “My wife is from Northern Virginia, so man, this is like a full-circle moment for me to be able to play for the Wizards. It’s a team I’ve always wanted to put the jersey on for. I’m super excited to be here.”</p><p>Brogdon had a prolific career on the Virginia Cavaliers from 2011-16. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year earned numerous honors, including ACC Player of the Year (2016), consensus first-team All-American (2016), Naismith award finalist (2016), and three first-team All-ACC selections. The university retired his No. 15 jersey on February 20, 2017.</p><p>With the DMV area playing such an important role in Brogdon’s life, it makes sense why he’s invested in helping a young team in the early stages of a rebuild. However, the 6-foot-4, 229-pounder is still just as valuable on the court as he is in the locker room.</p><p>Brogdon instantly upgrades Washington’s perimeter defense and shooting, as he’s only a year removed from shooting a career-high 44.4% from deep on the Boston Celtics. Players like Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George will all benefit from playing with a reliable “three and D” veteran.</p><p>Whether Brogdon stays for half the season, the whole season, or even re-signs, he has the chance to pay it forward to a city he has a soft spot for.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

When he's not telling the stories of your favorite sports team, Peter can be found recording the next garage rock classic in his basement studio, whipping up an authentic Italian meal in the kitchen, or trying to figure out the appeal of Minecraft with his 9-year-old son in the living room.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Mini-Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Just hours ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-trade-key-vet-and-lottery-pick-to-wizards-ahead-of-nba-draft">traded a piece</a> that many expected to be dealt this offseason, sending veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon along with the 14th pick in Wednesday’s draft to the Washington Wizards for forward Deni Avdija.</p><p>The Blazers also sent the second most favorable of their three 2029 first-round picks along with two second-round picks as part of the deal as well.</p><p>Brogdon, a former Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year award winner, didn’t have a place on a Blazers squad that is looking to rebuild with young pieces. With Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe needing to play development minutes and Anfernee Simons the best scorer on the team, Brogdon was the odd man out.</p><p>With Brogdon off to Washington, the Blazers land an emerging small forward in Deni Avdija. The no. 9 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the 23-year-old Avdija had a breakout season last year for the Wizards. He put up 14.7 points and 7.2 rebounds a night in 75 games played.</p><p>The Blazers sincerely needed an upgrade on the wing and have found it – to a degree – with Avdija, who is a solid defender, rebounder, and passer that can assist with help-side playmaking. Avdija has also begun to show a legitimate 3-point stroke last season. The career 32 percent 3-point shooter shot better than 37 percent from the arc in 2023-24.</p><p>The Blazers are clearly banking on Avdija’s upside at a position of need. He’s an affordable long-term option that is locked up through 2028 on a declining 4-year/$55 million deal. That price, and the fact that he has already demonstrated in his age-23 season greater contribution than they’re likely to get from the no. 14 pick on Wednesday, makes the trade a worthwhile swing for the Blazers.</p><p>While trading a player of Brogdon’s caliber along with a pair of first rounders and a pair of second rounders seems like a steep price – and it is – if Avdija takes another step this season like he did last year, Portland has found their wing of the future.</p><h2><b>Blazers’ trade of Brogdon the first domino to fall?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Jerami-Grant.jpg"><figcaption>© Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The move also makes financial sense for the Blazers as they’ll gain some much-needed flexibility. Portland went into the offseason over the $178.7 million first apron, making it difficult to make any moves. They are now $4.2 million below the luxury tax by moving off Malcolm Brogdon’s $22.5 million and the no. 14 overall pick.</p><p>Perhaps the reason Portland was willing to give up so much in the deal was in fact this financial flexibility. This makes it much easier to trade Jerami Grant this offseason. With the cap increasing, and one less year remaining on it, Grant’s contract looks a lot more palatable to teams in need of some offensive firepower that may already have their 1a and 1b players. Perhaps when the Los Angeles Lakers strike out on adding an All-Star to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Blazers can send them Grant in exchange for pieces and future picks that will backfill what was lost in the Brogdon deal? Just something to think about.</p><p>The Blazers were a poor team last season. With a potentially historic 2025 draft coming up, they have little incentive to improve this year. So why did they add Avdija? It makes sense if other moves to remove some vets from the roster are coming down the line. Once that happens, and Portland adds a (hopefully) top end 2025 pick, the makings of a young core will be in place with Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan, next-year’s pick that could be Cooper Flagg, and Avdija.</p><p>That’s worth an extra first rounder in a year where you will be drafting three times in the first round.</p><p><b>Final trade grade: B</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

A source close to the team says that Brogdon received platelet rich plasma therapy.</p><p>Brogdon last played for the Blazers on Feb. 2 in Portland’s loss to the Denver Nuggets.
