He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Dallas Mavericks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Tuesday, it was reported that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-fans-celebrate-kyrie-irvings-next-extension-with-dallas">Dallas Mavericks have come to terms with Kyrie Irving</a> on a contract extension, with Irving declining his $43 million player option for next season to sign a three-year, $119 million deal. While this is shrewd business, provided, of course, that Irving returns to full strength after tearing his ACL in early March, there remains a big void in the Mavericks backcourt, as Irving, at best, may not be back until January.</p><p>At the very least, this Irving extension is structured in a way that allows the Mavericks to open up the taxpayer midlevel exception worth $5.7 million. They aim to use this newfound cap flexibility to try and find a stopgap option at the point, with names such as D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul, Malcolm Brogdon, and Dennis Schroder <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45578603/mavericks-kyrie-irving-declining-player-option-intends-sign-3-year-119-million-contract" rel="noopener">emerging as potential targets</a> for the Mavs in free agency, as per Shams Charania of ESPN.</p><p>This report tracks with the intel that ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has; according to Siegel, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-4-0-latest-intel-kevin-durant-trade">Mavs “are exploring ways to convince Chris Paul</a> to sign with them in free agency”. Alas, Paul could very well choose to sign elsewhere, which is why Dallas is keeping their options open — hence the potential for someone like Russell, Brogdon, or Schroder to end up with the Mavericks.</p><p>Considering how the Mavericks’ main strength is having a deep frontcourt, they will need a point guard to set the table and get them their touches where they’re comfortable. Paul, among those four, is the best fit when taking this into account.</p><h2><b>Assessing the Mavericks’ need at point guard</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Mar-24-2025-Brooklyn-New-York-USA-Dallas-Mavericks-guard-Kyrie-Irving.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Perhaps the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-rumors-dallas-explore-point-guard-market-trades-free-agency">Mavs are also looking for someone</a> to at least be a reasonable facsimile of Irving and his playstyle; Irving is more of a scorer than a playmaker, doing his damage by being one of the best three-level scorers in the entire association.</p><p>Russell’s stock has dipped, but he is the best shooter from beyond the arc among those four and his pull-up threat could be very useful in big Mavericks lineups that should dominate the glass. He also has some experience playing alongside Anthony Davis, so that should help matters as well.</p><p>Brogdon is a locker-room leader and the most efficient scorer of the bunch. Alas, he is a major injury risk; will the Mavericks want someone as injury-prone as Brogdon to cover for their already injured point guard in Irving?</p><p>Schroder provides downhill attacking and is a menace on the defensive end. He too has experience playing alongside Davis. But he is the worst shooter of the four, and the Mavericks may want a more consistent pull-up threat to at least help with the floor-spacing considering how many big men Dallas are going to have to give playing time to.</p><p>All four options for the Mavericks have their merits. It will all boil down to who’s going to be available for them and who’s going to be willing to sign with the team. But if they had the luxury of choice, Russell appears to be their best option if they are unable to sign Paul, if only because he’s the youngest among the four and the Mavs have the defensive weapons to cover for his shortcomings on that end of the floor.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Among those whom the Wizards traded away are Kyle Kuzma, Jonas Valanciunas, and Marvin Bagley III — getting Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart, among others, in return. However, Washington was not able to trade away veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, who is in the final year of his contract worth $22.5 million. Nonetheless, a team that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-clippers-celtics-malcolm-brogdon-botched-trade">nearly traded for Brogdon in the past, the Los Angeles Clippers, remain interested.</a></p><p>It was always going to be difficult for the Clippers to bring Brogdon in via trade. But staying with the Wizards until the end of the season makes no sense for the veteran guard, making a buyout agreement likely. To that end, the Clippers <a href="https://x.com/BrettSiegelNBA/status/1887600280608350216" rel="noopener">will be a huge player</a> for Brogdon’s services, as per Brett Siegel and Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.</p><p>As one would recall, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-malcolm-brogdon-prepared-to-be-a-clipper-twice-this-summer">Clippers nearly pulled off a trade for Brogdon</a> prior to the start of the 2023-24 season. Fresh off a campaign in which he won the Sixth Man of the Year award with the Boston Celtics, LA looked at 32-year-old guard as someone who can initiate offense for the team — the point guard they’ve needed for so long.</p><p>Alas, the Clippers decided to pull out of the trade due to concerns surrounding Brogdon and his health. Brogdon then ended up on the Portland Trail Blazers via the Jrue Holiday trade, and this past offseason, he was moved once again, this time to the Wizards by way of the Deni Avdija deal.</p><p>Brogdon’s health remains a huge question mark, but when available to suit up, he can still help a team with contending aspirations such as the Clippers.</p><h2><b>Clippers look to keep up in the Western Conference arms race</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-la-makes-surprising-bogdan-bogdanovic-terance-mann-trade-with-hawks">Clippers pulled off two trades prior to the deadline</a>, bringing in Bogdan Bogdanovic from the Atlanta Hawks as well as taking a chance on MarJon Beauchamp. Bogdanovic, in particular, could be a huge addition, giving an infusion of shooting and a bit of shot-creation off the Clippers bench.</p><p>Malcolm Brogdon will be such a welcome addition as well. He could back up James Harden quite nicely, and in the aftermath of Kevin Porter Jr. and Bones Hyland’s departures, Brogdon’s skillset as a playmaker who can create his own shot would be a hand and glove fit on Tyronn Lue’s squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jimmy-butler-heat-trade-intel-nba-cap-crisis-siegels-scoop">Wizards will likely buy out</a> the veteran’s contract if they don’t trade him before the Feb. 6 deadline, via NBA insider Brett Siegel.</p><p>“In regards to the NBA buyout market, there are going to be very few options available. [Bruce] Brown could be a prime buyout candidate if he is not traded, and the same can be said for Wizards guard Malcolm Brogdon,” Siegel said. “The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year won’t be with Washington for too much longer, as it’s expected that the two sides will part ways either by trade or a buyout, sources said.”</p><p>Buyouts are when a team and player agree to end their contract early in exchange for the player giving up some salary. Doing so with Brogdon (foot) would give Washington more cap room and more playing time for its other guards. The 32-year-old is averaging 24.8 minutes across 18 games thus far.</p><p>“Brogdon could command a strong market for teams seeking backcourt help if he were to be let go by the Wizards,” Siegel continued. “The Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Clippers, and Hawks would all be attractive destinations for him.”</p><h2><b>Wizards got Malcolm Brogdon as temporary “culture builder”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Malcolm-Brogdon.jpg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Portland Trail Blazers traded Brogdon along with Bub Carrington, a 2029 first-round pick, a 2028 second-rounder, and a 2030 second-rounder to the Wizards in July for Deni Avdija. The deal worked out for both sides, as Avdija is Portland’s fourth-leading scorer with 14.1 points per game on 46.2% shooting across 28.4 minutes, while Carrington leads all rookies in minutes, assists, and steals. However, the 2016 second-round pick admitted that he may not be with the Wizards long-term.</p><p>“That’s something they’re trying to get to pay off, this is a long-term process. That’s three, four, five years down the road, we want the habits we’re building today and the money we’re spending today to pay off at that point,” he continued. “I might not even be here to see it but my job is to make sure we’re taking steps this year to plant those seeds.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-malcolm-brogdon-wins-sixth-man-of-the-year-award">2023 NBA Sixth Man of the Year</a> is in the last year of his contract, so he could get traded in-season or walk to a playoff contender in free agency. I’ve always had extended family in DC that I visited growing up, ended up coming to school here, an hour and a half down the road,” he said. “My wife is from Northern Virginia, so man, this is like a full-circle moment for me to be able to play for the Wizards. It’s a team I’ve always wanted to put the jersey on for. I’m super excited to be here.”</p><p>Brogdon had a prolific career on the Virginia Cavaliers from 2011-16. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year earned numerous honors, including ACC Player of the Year (2016), consensus first-team All-American (2016), Naismith award finalist (2016), and three first-team All-ACC selections. The university retired his No. 15 jersey on February 20, 2017.</p><p>With the DMV area playing such an important role in Brogdon’s life, it makes sense why he’s invested in helping a young team in the early stages of a rebuild. However, the 6-foot-4, 229-pounder is still just as valuable on the court as he is in the locker room.</p><p>Brogdon instantly upgrades Washington’s perimeter defense and shooting, as he’s only a year removed from shooting a career-high 44.4% from deep on the Boston Celtics. Players like Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George will all benefit from playing with a reliable “three and D” veteran.</p><p>Whether Brogdon stays for half the season, the whole season, or even re-signs, he has the chance to pay it forward to a city he has a soft spot for.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

When he's not telling the stories of your favorite sports team, Peter can be found recording the next garage rock classic in his basement studio, whipping up an authentic Italian meal in the kitchen, or trying to figure out the appeal of Minecraft with his 9-year-old son in the living room.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Mini-Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Just hours ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-trade-key-vet-and-lottery-pick-to-wizards-ahead-of-nba-draft">traded a piece</a> that many expected to be dealt this offseason, sending veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon along with the 14th pick in Wednesday’s draft to the Washington Wizards for forward Deni Avdija.</p><p>The Blazers also sent the second most favorable of their three 2029 first-round picks along with two second-round picks as part of the deal as well.</p><p>Brogdon, a former Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year award winner, didn’t have a place on a Blazers squad that is looking to rebuild with young pieces. With Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe needing to play development minutes and Anfernee Simons the best scorer on the team, Brogdon was the odd man out.</p><p>With Brogdon off to Washington, the Blazers land an emerging small forward in Deni Avdija. The no. 9 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the 23-year-old Avdija had a breakout season last year for the Wizards. He put up 14.7 points and 7.2 rebounds a night in 75 games played.</p><p>The Blazers sincerely needed an upgrade on the wing and have found it – to a degree – with Avdija, who is a solid defender, rebounder, and passer that can assist with help-side playmaking. Avdija has also begun to show a legitimate 3-point stroke last season. The career 32 percent 3-point shooter shot better than 37 percent from the arc in 2023-24.</p><p>The Blazers are clearly banking on Avdija’s upside at a position of need. He’s an affordable long-term option that is locked up through 2028 on a declining 4-year/$55 million deal. That price, and the fact that he has already demonstrated in his age-23 season greater contribution than they’re likely to get from the no. 14 pick on Wednesday, makes the trade a worthwhile swing for the Blazers.</p><p>While trading a player of Brogdon’s caliber along with a pair of first rounders and a pair of second rounders seems like a steep price – and it is – if Avdija takes another step this season like he did last year, Portland has found their wing of the future.</p><h2><b>Blazers’ trade of Brogdon the first domino to fall?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Jerami-Grant.jpg"><figcaption>© Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The move also makes financial sense for the Blazers as they’ll gain some much-needed flexibility. Portland went into the offseason over the $178.7 million first apron, making it difficult to make any moves. They are now $4.2 million below the luxury tax by moving off Malcolm Brogdon’s $22.5 million and the no. 14 overall pick.</p><p>Perhaps the reason Portland was willing to give up so much in the deal was in fact this financial flexibility. This makes it much easier to trade Jerami Grant this offseason. With the cap increasing, and one less year remaining on it, Grant’s contract looks a lot more palatable to teams in need of some offensive firepower that may already have their 1a and 1b players. Perhaps when the Los Angeles Lakers strike out on adding an All-Star to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Blazers can send them Grant in exchange for pieces and future picks that will backfill what was lost in the Brogdon deal? Just something to think about.</p><p>The Blazers were a poor team last season. With a potentially historic 2025 draft coming up, they have little incentive to improve this year. So why did they add Avdija? It makes sense if other moves to remove some vets from the roster are coming down the line. Once that happens, and Portland adds a (hopefully) top end 2025 pick, the makings of a young core will be in place with Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan, next-year’s pick that could be Cooper Flagg, and Avdija.</p><p>That’s worth an extra first rounder in a year where you will be drafting three times in the first round.</p><p><b>Final trade grade: B</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

A source close to the team says that Brogdon received platelet rich plasma therapy.</p><p>Brogdon last played for the Blazers on Feb. 2 in Portland’s loss to the Denver Nuggets. He was ruled out of the team’s next game with a right knee contusion, missed Portland’s next two home games due to an unspecified illness, and now is out due to the elbow issues.</p><p>The Blazers could use his leadership on the court. Currently mired in an eight-game losing streak, Portland is 15-24 when Brogdon plays, and a staggering 0-17 when the veteran guard is out. Having Brogdon as a veteran presence on the floor has proved beneficial for a young Blazers team that is in the early stages of a rebuild. He has proved especially effective as a mentor for rookie guard Scoot Henderson, playing a key role in the youngster’s development throughout the season.</p><p>Amid the backcourt injuries, the Blazers traded for Dalano Banton and signed Ahston Hagans off of their G League squad Rip City remix.</p><p>On the season, Brogdon is averaging 15.7 points and 5.5 assists for Portland this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He was ruled out of the team’s next game with a right knee contusion, missed Portland’s last two home games due to an unspecified illness, and now is out due to the elbow issues.</p><p>The Blazers are dealing with multiple injuries to their backcourt rotation in addition to Brogdon. Rookie guard Scoot Henderson has missed the last two games with a foot sprain. Anfernee Simons missed Portland’s loss to the Pelicans after spraining his ankle in the team’s overtime loss to the Detroit Pistons, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-shaedon-sharpe-surgery-timeline-revealed" rel="noopener">Shaedon Sharpe had surgery</a> to correct an abdominal issue last week that will see him miss at least six more weeks.</p><p>Fortunately for Brogdon and the Blazers, the news of his injury and treatment comes right as the NBA prepares to enter the All-Star break. After this week’s two games at home against Minnesota on Tuesday and Thursday, the Blazer don’t have another game until the following Friday at home against the Nuggets.</p><p>With all of the backcourt injuries, the Blazers signed Ashton Hagans of the G-League Rip City Remix to a 10-day contract last week. As of now, however, Brogdon appears to be staying in Portland, with the Blazers content to hold onto Brogdon unless they are bowled over with an offer.”</p><p>Brogdon would be quite an addition to the 76ers if such a trade pushed through. On the season, the former Virginia Cavaliers star is averaging 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 41.2 percent from behind the arc. However, the 76ers will need to further impress the Blazers if the latter are to cough up the 2022-23 NBA Sixth Man of the Year winner via a trade.</p><p>Brogdon has one more year left on his current deal which is set to expire by the end of the 2024-25 NBA season. Before he arrived in Portland, he played for the Boston Celtics for just a season. While his stint with the Celtics was short, Brogdon was a tremendous impact player off the bench for Boston. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-interest-pj-washington-bruce-brown-jr-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">Knicks have a legitimate chance</a> to make it to the NBA Finals and they should be going all-in this season. They already made one major move in trading for OG Anunoby, and another deal could put New York in a great spot to contend for a championship.</p><p>The Portland Trail Blazers, meanwhile, are in the middle of a rebuild. They have three core players in Anfernee Simons, Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-malcolm-brogdon-prefers-remain-blazers-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">Blazers need to build around</a> that trio, meaning Portland’s other valuable players are better used trade chips to acquire future assets. This contrast makes the Knicks and Blazers ideal trade partners.</p><p>A hypothetical Brogdan trade between New York and Portland <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/insider/story/_/id/39408945/2024-nba-trade-deadline-six-big-trades-want-see-lakers-hawks-nets-knicks-76ers" rel="noopener">was recently proposed</a> by ESPN’s  Chris Herring. Let’s break down the deal and give each team a grade.</p><h2><b>Knicks get: </b></h2><p><i><b>Malcolm Brogdon</b></i></p><h2><b>Trail Blazers get: </b></h2><p><i><b>Evan Fournier, 2024 first round pick and 2025 second round pick</b></i></p><p>In this deal, the Knicks acquire a versatile two-way player who can contribute in many ways in exchange for a seldom-used bench piece and future draft picks.</p><p>Malcolm Brogdon can play a supporting role in the starting rotation, and he could just as easily lead the team’s second unit. This by itself makes Brogdon incredibly valuable, because while a strong starting rotation is important, it is equally vital to make sure that your bench players do not blow the game when the starters need to rest.</p><p>Brogdon is capable of playing on and off the ball. He is a strong cutter and three-point shooter who would fit in well in New York while playing off of Jalen Brunson’s creation ability.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers get Evan Fournier and two draft picks. Fournier is a useful player but he won’t get Portland back into playoff contention by himself. Rather, this is about helping the Blazers accelerate their rebuild.</p><h2><b>Knicks still need more firepower after adding OG Anunoby</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/OG_Anunoby_s_honest_take_on_looming_Raptors_game_sums_up_human_aspect_of_trades.webp"></figure><p>The Knicks recently traded for two-way star OG Anunoby, who was previously with the Toronto Raptors. Anunoby brings a strong defensive presence to the Knicks, along with scoring capabilities.</p><p>However, Anunoby is best suited as a tertiary scoring option. He is capable of creating for himself, but is at his best when he is playing off of somebody else.</p><p>Anunoby’s handles are adequate, but he can sometimes struggle to get by defenders in isolation, and he is prone to turning the ball over.</p><p>When Anunoby has other playmakers to initiate the offense, he is lethal. When his teammates can get a defense off balance, Anunoby can leverage his top-tier athleticism and instincts to take advantage of the opportunity and make the defense pay.</p><p>While the Knicks have one elite creator in Jalen Brunson who can make plays for himself and others, Brunson is the only true perimeter creator. Brogdon would bring ball-handling skills to serve as a secondary initiator, efficient scoring and additional defense.</p><h2><b>Portland can flip Fournier for additional assets</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/NBA_rumors_Malcolm_Brogdon_prefers_to_remain_with_Blazers_at_trade_deadline.webp"></figure><p>Evan Fournier will be an unrestricted free agent in 2025. This will give Fournier some value to the Blazers as a future trade asset. At next year’s trade deadline, the Blazers should be able to flip Fournier to a team looking to clear up cap space by acquiring an expiring contract in exchange for a player with a contract the team wishes to move, along with one or multiple draft picks as compensation.</p><p>The first round pick Portland will acquire from the Knicks is likely to fall in the late teens to the mid-twenties, but this will still be valuable to Portland. The 2024 draft class isn’t particularly top-heavy and doesn’t have a consensus top player. However, there is depth, and some good players are likely to fall in the draft.</p><p>Depending on where New York’s pick falls, Portland can package that selection with their own to move up a few slots in the order. Or, they can use it to add two young, cost-controlled players to complement their emerging core.</p><p>This would be an opportunity for the Blazers to draft a wing such as Zaccharie Risacher with their own pick, and then add a big man with New York’s pick such as Kel’el Ware or even potentially Donovan Clingan. This deal would give the Blazers three first round picks, as they also have a pick from Golden State that is top-four protected.</p><h2><b>Blazers get enviable flexibility, but could get more for Brogdon</b></h2><p>This deal by itself would give the Blazers incredible flexibility, with the opportunity to draft three potential contributors or to package their picks and move up for a player that Portland’s front office really likes.</p><p>Brogdon is a good player, and Portland may be able to find a better deal. They would be wise to try and get at least another second round pick out of the Knicks in this deal, but they could do a lot worse than the added draft flexibility they will get from this deal.</p><p><i><b>Portland Trail Blazers Grade: B+</b></i></p><h2><b>The Knicks get an excellent fit for a reasonable cost</b></h2><p>The Knicks will be adding an efficient player who addresses their most pressing needs. They will only lose a projected late first round pick, a second round pick and a player on the end of their bench. Brogdon played 38 minutes, but he struggled from the floor.
