In fact, Joel Embiid was one of the only players under contract. Even after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-tyrese-maxey-philly-agree-contract-extension">re-signing Tyrese Maxey</a> and bringing in several key free agents in order to make a legitimate championship push in the Eastern Conference, the Sixers still have some open roster spots to fill. Could Marcus Morris Sr. and Davis Bertans be the answers for Philadelphia to round out their roster late in free agency?</p><p>As things currently stand, a total of 13 players are under contract with the 76ers. Of these 13 players, Ricky Council IV is the only one with non-guaranteed clauses on his deal for the 2024-25 season, as his contract will be fully guaranteed in January. This leaves two open roster spots that could potentially be filled by Morris and Bertans.</p><p>The 76ers could really use some extra depth at the power forward position, which is why both players make sense. In fact, the Sixers <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-marcus-morris-dvis-bertns-nba-free-agency-cleveland-cavaliers-20240801.html?utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_campaign=edit_social_share_twitter_traffic&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=&amp;utm_term=&amp;int_promo=" rel="noopener">hold interest</a> in Morris and Bertans, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.</p><p>After being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-charlotte-makes-final-decision-on-veteran-sharpshooter">waived by the Charlotte Hornets</a> earlier this offseason, Bertans has yet to receive serious interest from teams around the NBA in free agency. However, he has shot 39.6 percent from three-point range for his career and can be an elite weapon for a playoff-contending team to have on their bench. If Bertans were to join the 76ers, the 31-year-old would be used as a catch-and-shoot specialist coming off screens on the perimeter.</p><p>Morris is a more complete player than Bertans, as his all-around offensive repertoire makes him one of the better free agents remaining. The 14th overall pick from 2011 has 13 years of experience under his belt, and he recently played for the Sixers during the 2023-24 season before finishing the year with the Cleveland Cavaliers. As Pompey notes, Morris has drawn interest from the 76ers, Cavs, Hornets, Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, New Orleans Pelicans, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Dallas Mavericks also showed interest in the veteran forward before they filled out their roster with other names in free agency.</p><p>No matter who the 76ers pursue to fill their final roster spots before training camp, they are only able to offer a minimum contract as a result of the signings they have already made this summer.</p><h2><b>76ers staying aggressive in NBA free agency</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tyrese-Maxey-and-Paul-George-at-the-All-Star-Game.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Daryl Morey and the 76ers front office have done their best to flip their roster around into one that has the capability of competing for a title. The Boston Celtics aren’t going anywhere at the top of the conference, which is why a drastic move was needed in Philadelphia.</p><p>That is why the 76ers ultimately pursued and signed nine-time All-Star and six-time All-NBA wing Paul George. Next to Maxey and Embiid, George finally gives the Sixers the other All-Star talent and reliable scoring option that they haven’t had through the years. Known for his two-way play and natural scoring abilities, George is set to take a tremendous amount of pressure off Embiid during the 2024-25 season. George has even gone so far as to claim that he is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-paul-georges-no-ego-pledge-underscores-winning-mentality" rel="noopener">fine taking a backseat to Embiid and Maxey</a>.</p><p>“There’s no ego with me,” George said this summer. “It’s not about shots for me, it’s not about having the ball in my hands the whole game. It’s about winning. I wanna make winning plays. I know over the course of a game when I need to be aggressive, when I need to raise the level. But for me, it’s about winning. That’s all I care about is trying to win, putting everything towards that. And that’s really the conversation we three need to have — myself, Joel and Tyrese.</p><p>“Whatever it takes, let’s go do it, let’s get the job done and then we just relay that to the team.”</p><p>Along with bringing in George, the 76ers also signed Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, Eric Gordon, and Reggie Jackson this offseason. The Sixers have interest in signing the power forward to a free-agency deal, according to multiple sources. The Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves have also expressed some level of interest, according to a source.”</p><p>From the sounds of it, 76ers will have ample competition for the veteran’s services. While the Pistons and Hornets can offer playing time, the Cavs, Mavs, Heat, Wolves, and 76ers are all expected to be in playoff contention next season.</p><p>“I’ve been in the league for 13 seasons,” <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-marcus-morris-impact-will-shape-cleveland-playoff-run">Morris said</a> in November. “I’ve always been a professional, always been a leader, and just helping young guys in any way, any capacity I can, using my voice. I have a high IQ. I’ve been around a lot of great coaches, played for a lot of great coaches, a lot of great teams so, just being myself man.”</p><p>Morris was acquired by the Sixers in Nov. 2023 as part of the return from the Los Angeles Clippers for James Harden. The following February, he was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs as part of the 3-team Buddy Hield deal.</p><p>Morris has averaged 16.2 points and 6.0 rebounds for the 76ers, Rockets, Suns, Pistons, Celtics, Knicks, Clippers, and Cavs in his 14-year career.</p><h2><b>Marcus Morris had playoff-team demand after Spurs buyout last season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Marcus-Morris.jpg"><figcaption>© Mike Watters-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>San Antonio acquired Morris in early February from a three-team deal that sent Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers and Buddy Hield to the Philadelphia 76ers. Several other teams were reportedly interested in acquiring Morris, including the Minnesota Timberwolves.</p><p>Morris fills a specific need for the Cavs as a bigger, stronger forward. Although he wasn’t a regular member of Cleveland’s rotation most nights, especially when the playoffs began, he did give Cleveland even more depth at a position of need. Morris can still contribute as a solid two-way player who can shoot lights out from the three-point line if his number is called. This also isn’t the first time he has voiced his issues with Bickerstaff’s game planning. All throughout Cleveland’s playoff run, Morris had expressed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33Jhyfeo1og" rel="noopener">frustration</a> on multiple occasions over not getting consistent minutes in the playoffs.</p><p>“It was funny — the first four games, I was like, ‘Damn, am I even going to play in the playoffs?’” Morris said after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/darius-garland-dazzles-cavs-game-5-win-over-magic">Cleveland’s Game 5 win</a> over the Orlando Magic.</p><p>In that Game 5 win, Morris gave the Cavs a spark against a Magic team that was frustrating them all series long. Morris played 26 minutes off the bench, chipping in 12 points and 3 rebounds in his 70th career playoff game. But, despite him being a spark, Morris eventually saw his minutes in flux with Bickerstaff and the Cavs coaching staff trying everything to win their first-round series against the Magic and prepare for the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.</p><p>But, to be fair to Morris, he wasn’t the only player to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSvxwi3Une4" rel="noopener">seemingly voice his frustration</a> about Bickerstaff’s coaching, especially in the first round against the Magic.</p><p>“You could tell that (Magic coach) Jamahl Mosley did an excellent job planning for this game,” said big man Jarrett Allen after Game 3 in Orlando. “There’s times when I was just in the corner, I stood in the corner last game, but, just overall, you could see tiny differences that accumulate into a lot.</p><p>“We felt like we were a step behind every single thing that they did. Whether there was someone driving to the rim, me standing in the paint, or just rebounding the ball. We were just a little slow.”</p><p>Considering all that, especially with Morris saying that there was a disconnect between <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavaliers-news-donovan-mitchells-role-in-j-b-bickerstaff-firing-broken-down">Bickerstaff and the Cavs</a>, it might be best for Cleveland to move on.</p><p>Despite his on-court and tactical flaws, Bickerstaff was the coach who helped build and develop the team into what it is today. But the Cavs cannot afford to become complacent. They are far too talented to settle for haphazard playoff exits. If Bickerstaff had lost the locker room this season and the Cavs decided to bring him back next season, it could’ve spelled disaster. Rather, he was just trying to come in and <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/evan-mobley-scores-17-cavaliers-rebound-embarrassing-loss-108486093" rel="noopener">set the tone</a> defensively.</p><p>“I just wanted to be physical,” Morris said, per Tony Withers of ABC News/AP. “Like I told the player (Richards), I wasn’t trying to hurt him. I’m just trying to set the tone, man. You’re rolling down the paint, catching lobs and we’re trying to stop that type of (stuff).”</p><p>“I wanted to play the game, I didn’t want to get thrown out, but I definitely wanted to put a little lick on him. I was happy the way we responded.”</p><h2><b>Marcus Morris Sr. establishes the standard</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Cavs-forward-Marcus-Morris-Sr-24-defends.jpg"></figure><p>With the playoffs beckoning, Marcus Morris Sr. wants the Cavs to know what it would take for them to overcome the obstacles that lie ahead.</p><p>“There’s been a lot of grueling games and I was just wanted to toughen us up. Step in front of it like, listen this is what’s going to be expected moving forward, not just for today. Set the precedent going into the playoffs. We’re not about to have anybody coming in here and doing what they want to do,” Morris added.</p><p>The Cavs are currently shorthanded, although they recently got Evan Mobley back in the lineup. Mobley should help with what Morris wants the Cavs to establish — a gritty defensive identity that would help them avoid the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-jarrett-allen-evan-mobley-show-the-lights-werent-too-bright-in-win-over-warriors">mistakes they made</a> in their first-round playoff exit last season.</p><p>Moving forward, hopefully Morris can do his job for the Cavs as an enforcer without costing his team on the court with some technical free throws or by leaving them one capable rotation player short.</p><h2><b>Cavs bringing out the best in Mook</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Cavs-center-Jarrett-Allen-31-guard-Darius-Garland-10-and-guard-Donovan-Mitchell-45-celebrate.jpg"></figure><p>Marcus Morris Sr.’s stock has fallen precipitously in recent years; now 34 years old, Morris has lost a step or two on defense, and the lift on his jumpshot isn’t quite what it used to be. Thus, it wasn’t at all surprising when the Los Angeles Clippers and later on, the Philadelphia 76ers, gave up on him.</p><p>The <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-marcus-morris-contract-details-cleveland-debut-revealed">Cavs then picked him up</a> amid injury woes to their key players, and Morris, at the very least, was a battle-tested veteran who can shoot and provide bit of an edge to the team. Morris appears to be making the most of his new opportunity, earning JB Bickerstaff’s trust with his toughness. It remains to be seen if he can make the playoff rotation, but it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if he did.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
