I was a little surprised, it was a little last minute, but that’s out of my control, and I tend to not focus on things I can’t control.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-zach-kleiman-getting-roasted-nba-trade-deadline-deal-dud-marcus-smart-jake-laravia">Grizzlies dealt Smart</a> and a 2025 first-round pick (protected 1-14) to the Wizards for Marvin Bagley III, Johnny Davis, and a 2025 second-rounder as part of a three-team deal with the Sacramento Kings. Memphis likely wanted to get Smart’s $20.2 million salary off the books, as he’s struggled with injuries and declining play recently. However, the three-time All-Defensive first-teamer is confident that he can help Washington’s young core.</p><p>“Just my experience. I’m in my 11th season, I played for really good teams up until now, and I was able to do some things with them, and just to bring that experience over here,” Smart explained. “Young group of guys really looking to figure it out in this league, and just helping them with that.”</p><h2><b>Marcus Smart is impressed with Wizards’ Bub Carrington</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/IMG_1049.jpeg"><figcaption>Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Speaking of the young guys, rookie guard Bub Carrington dropped a career-high 23 points (9-13 FG, 5-7 3PT) with seven assists, four rebounds, and one steal in 38 minutes on Saturday. Smart, who had a front-row seat for the performance, said that he sees himself in the 19-year-old.</p><p>“Yeah, for sure. The way that he’s able to get downhill and put pressure on the defense is definitely a sight to see,” the 2014 first-round pick said. “Me being a guard, a bigger guard as well, that can get downhill as well, to be able to come in and work with Bub and see him progress [is great]. No one knew each other on the team, we’re just getting a lot more comfortable with each other. We’re playing more together on both ends of the floor, defensively especially. We’re focusing more on being in help spots, not leaving guys on islands, rotating. We’ve had a lot of growth on that end.”</p><p>Indeed, comparing the February Wizards to the start of the campaign is night and day. Washington (9-43) was winless in November but is 3-2 in its last five games, and both losses were competitive. Friday’s loss was especially impressive, as the Wizards fell just 134-124 to the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers (42-10).</p><p>Part of that improvement is due to defense, as Carrington said. Although it’s just a five-game sample size, Washington is allowing only 115.6 points per game in February, compared to 124 in October and 122.9 in November. However, it still ranks last in the league with 121.6 points per game allowed on the season, and Trae Young’s 35-point (13-26 FG, 5-14 3PT), 14-assist outing on Saturday was a sobering reminder of that.</p><p>With that being said, bumps in the road are acceptable as long as there’s steady improvement. The trade deadline was a rotational reset, as the departures of Kyle Kuzma and Jonas Valanciunas left extra minutes for the young players.</p><p>While Smart and the newly acquired Khris Middleton will take some of that playing time when they suit up, it’s still a good sign that almost all of the Wizards’ young players have contributed recently.</p><p>Fellow rookie Kyshawn George (ankle) had 17 points (6-11 FG, 4-6 3PT) with five rebounds and two assists against the Cavs, while 2023 second-rounder Tristan Vukcevic had 12 points (4-9 FG, 2-5 3PT) with six rebounds off the bench in Wednesday’s 119-102 win over the Brooklyn Nets. The 21-year-old is a two-way player, so him contributing meaningfully at the NBA level already means well for his development. George scored 17 in that game as well.</p><p>Meanwhile, sophomore guard Bilal Coulibaly had 26 points (9-16 FG, 4-8 3PT) with five rebounds and three assists in Monday’s 124-114 win over the Charlotte Hornets. These quality individual outings are not only fun to watch, but they show that Washington’s rebuild is on the right track.</p><p>Next up is the San Antonio Spurs (22-28) at Capital One Arena on Monday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The guard is also a married man and a father, so let’s learn a bit more about Marcus Smart’s wife Maisa Hallum and how these two came together.</p><p>It was certainly a busy 2023 offseason for Smart and his wife. Smart had spent his entire career with the Boston Celtics, but on June 22, 2023, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-marcus-smart-blindsided-celtics-3-team-trade">he was traded in a package that landed the Celtics Kristaps Porzingis</a>.</p><p>Smart is a former first-round pick and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, becoming only the second point guard to ever win the award and the first guard to win it since Gary Payton in 1996.</p><p>Defensive Player of the Year is just one of many of Smart’s accolades. He is also a three-time All-Defensive First-Team selection, a member of the 2015 All-Rookie Second Team, and a three-time recipient of the NBA Hustle Award. The guard has averages of 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals in his career. Smart set a career high in assists per game in 2022 with 6.3.</p><p>Smart has played in 11 seasons and is a gritty player with a number of accomplishments that any team would want on their squad, but his biggest accomplishments happened off the court. Not much is known about Smart’s wife. It was revealed that she grew up in California.</p><p>Hallum is an entrepreneur and businesswoman. She is the founder and creative director of Sousa Swim, a swimwear company. The 30-year-old has struggled with injuries and declining play since then, but his reputation as one of the most physical defenders in the NBA makes him one of the best possible mentors for Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, and Johnson.</p><p>Speaking of Johnson, the rookie already flashed his potential on Friday with two points (1-of-4 FG), four assists, and one rebound in 9 minutes off the bench. Coulibaly was picked No. 8 overall in 2023, while Alex Sarr (No. 2), Carrington (No. 14), and George (No. 24) are all fellow rookies.</p><p>That’s in addition to the king’s ransom of draft capital the organization owns over the next few years. The Wizards will get their 2025 lottery pick back from the New York Knicks this summer, and now they have the Grizzlies’ pick as well. Memphis will almost certainly convey the selection given that it’s currently the second seed in the West at 35-16.</p><p>Washington will also get its 2026 first back from the Knicks if it stays at the bottom of the standings, as the pick is protected 1-8. Even if it does convey the pick, it can now fall back on Philadelphia’s selection that year.</p><p>The Wizards also have first-round pick swaps with the Phoenix Suns in ’26, ’28, and ’30 from the Bradley Beal trade, as well as the ’28 swap with Milwaukee from the Kuzma trade. They also own a first in ’27, two in ’29, one in ’30 (via GSW, protected 1-20), and one in ’31. The team still has a stash of future seconds too.</p><p>This is plenty for Washington to hang its hat on as it slowly builds through player development, especially because it didn’t trade any important assets. Giving up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-kyle-kuzma-doesnt-want-washington-plan">the disgruntled Kuzma</a> was inevitable, and dealing Valanciunas allows Sarr to shine at center. Bagley and Davis are backups on expiring contracts, and Butler is a promising, but expendable role player. Parting with six seconds is a lot, but the Wizards were never going to use all of them anyway.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-malcolm-brogdon-a-top-clippers-option-after-expected-wizards-buyout">Keeping Malcolm Brogdon</a> for the remainder of the season is also shrewd, as he was rumored to be a buyout candidate. He explained more via the Daily Memphian about <a href="https://dailymemphian.com/section/sportsmemphis-grizzlies/article/49741/memphis-grizzlies-general-manager-zach-kleiman-marcus-smart-jake-laravia-trades" rel="noopener">the decision to move the veteran guard</a>.</p><p>“Rather than do something to try and win a press conference, the focus (became) different,” Kleiman said. “It was like, ‘How do we best position ourselves to keep this team and roll forward with the guys that we believe in?’</p><p>“And, ‘How do we put ourselves in a position this offseason and beyond where we can retain and add to the roster in a way where everything is on the table with a lot of flexibility?’</p><p>Kleiman is referring to the salary cap, a figure that some teams disregard. Even with the new rules put in by the NBA for the first and second tax aprons, teams flirt with that area. For the Grizzlies, they want to remain competitive but have that flexibility. Teams like the Phoenix Suns can’t make many moves because of the tax apron.</p><p>As a result, teams like the Grizzlies can swoop in and sign a marquee free agent, without any competition from opposing teams.</p><h2><b>The Grizzles, Marcus Smart deal was a salary move</b></h2><p>Dumping Smart might not have been the smartest basketball move, but it was a nice salary move. After all, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-bob-myers-reveals-attempted-kevin-durant-trade">Bob Myers accidentally leaked that the Grizzlies were trying to trade for Kevin Durant</a>. For that to have happened, they would’ve needed to take on his salary.</p><p>The 35-16 Grizzlies have a compelling case for a marquee-free agent to sign there. They are missing that premier No. 1 scorer. While Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. have been exceptional, adding a top-tier veteran could be the deciding factor.</p><p>Either way, Memphis will continue to try and keep the winning a constant. They trail only 6 games to the Oklahoma City Thunder. With a Top 5 scoring offense, the Grizzlies have proven that they can keep up with the league’s best.
