Celebrity Net Worth estimates Markelle Fultz’s net worth in 2021 to be at least $5 million.
The Upper Marlboro, Maryland native was a five-star recruit out of high school. He led DeMatha Catholic to their second consecutive conference championship in his senior year, setting the school’s single-season record for assists with 278. Fultz also participated in both the McDonald's All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic.
In 2016, Fultz played with Team USA at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. He was named MVP of the tournament, leading the Americans to gold.
On August 21, 2015, the 6'3'' guard committed to the University of Washington.
Unfortunately, the Huskies posted an ugly 9-22 record that season. Despite his team's struggles, Fultz was named First-Team All-Pac-12 and a Third-Team All-American, averaging 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.
After his lone year as a Husky, Fultz declared for the 2017 NBA draft where he was selected with the first overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. His rookie contract with the Sixers was worth $37.4 million over four years.
The Sixers were hopeful The Process would pay with a promising young core of Fultz, Ben Simmons, and Joel Embiid. However, Fultz’s rookie campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the season's vast majority.
The mysterious injury, eventually described as scapular muscle imbalance, left Fultz with a significant decrease in range of motion, preventing him from utilizing his normal shot release. The injury saga was a hot-button topic in sports media, raising the question of how much of Fultz's shooting struggles were due to physical injury rather than a crisis of confidence.
"My shoulder is the main reason why my shot’s doing that," Fultz said of his jumper at the time, per CSN Philly’s Jessica Camerato.
Despite initially being shut down for the rest of his rookie season, Fultz was declared fit to return on March 26, 2018. Just two weeks later, Fultz became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double at the age of 19 years old and 317 days, a record broken by LaMelo Ball last season.
Fultz was named a starter in the backcourt for Philadelphia the following season, but was ultimately replaced by Jimmy Butler after the Sixers acquired the multi-year All-Star via trade. The injury drama continued, too. It got to the point that Fultz’s agent, Raymond Brothers, announced that the young guard would not participate in any team activities until undergoing further evaluation on his shoulder.
His injury was eventually diagnosed as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), which affects nerves between the neck and shoulder. Before the end of the 2018-19 season, the Sixers traded Fultz to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Jonathan Simmons and a protected 2020 first-round pick.
"Get right, and everything will take care of itself," he said in a 2019 Bleacher Report article after the trade. "Nobody here is rushing me. Everybody here is just open to me getting right and healthy first."
"I'm definitely getting better each and every day," Fultz said. "That's what a lot of people didn't know about TOS: It's very tricky, and the pain is different for different people. But that's what I'm working on now in rehab: just getting better each and every day. And the progression that I'm making is very good."
In his first year with the Magic, Fultz showed flashes of the talent that made him a former No. 1 pick, averaging 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Prior to the start of the 2020-2021 NBA season, he signed a contract extension worth $50 to stay with the Magic for three more years.
Unfortunately, after getting paid and finally finding his footing in the NBA, Fultz suffered another major blow as he tore his ACL in a January game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, sidelining him for the remainder of 2020-21.
Markelle sent a tweet after his ACL injury:
Despite all of the injury woes suffered in the early stages of his career, Fultz still got the bag with the Magic and seems a fixture of the team's ongoing rebuild. If healthy, he could form a devastating two-way backcourt with rookie Jalen Suggs, eventually helping Orlando reach heights untouched since Dwight Howard left the team a decade ago.
For now, Fultz can rest somewhat easy while rehabbing from injury, confident he's a fixture of the Magic's plans—and he might get paid big once again if he performs even better when he gets back on an NBA floor.
