However, the hard fouls from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-old-nikola-jokic-beef-returns-full-force-lunatic-top-20-take">Nikola Jokic and Markieff Morris in 2021 on one another sparked their rivalry</a>. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal spoke with Morris about the play, questioning whether or not the foul was dirty. He argued against what Morris did against Jokic.</p><p>While the two-time MVP is not a dirty player, Jokic is definitely a physical one. His passing and shooting ability are his calling cards. However, the Serbian superstar is a capable bruiser, setting the tone for Denver down low. The physicality he plays with has led to multiple confrontations throughout his career, including the one with Morris in 2021.</p><p>At the time, Morris was a role player on a Heat team coming off a deep playoff run. Miami’s success relied on their toughness, and their entire roster embodied their rough style of play. In O’Neal’s opinion, though, the contact between Morris and Jokic <a href="https://youtu.be/eYBs_USe6BY?t=1029" rel="noopener">was unnecessary</a>. The former Lakers center defended Denver’s big man on Wednesday’s episode of <i>The Big Podcast with Shaq.</i></p><p>“I know, but you’re my boy,” O’Neal told Morris. “And I know if I hit you, you’re going to hit me back and I know if you hit me I’m going to hit you back. So if you hit him first and he hits you back that’s a cheap shot?”</p><p>“If he hit me from behind I think that’s a cheap shot,” Morris said, defending himself. “I’m physically walking away so I’m not even like in the mode of knowing you’re about to hit me. It’s like a car crash.”</p><p>Jokic and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-nikola-jokic-denver-wins-first-championship-game-5-demolition-heat">Nuggets got their revenge against the Heat in the 2023 NBA Finals</a>. Denver beat Miami 4-1 in that series to help their center secure the first title of his career. He has not averaged more than 10 minutes a game since the 2022-23 season. Additionally, he’s averaged only 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game since the 2020-21 campaign.</p><p>So when he initially heard the news that he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-markieff-morris-maxi-kleber-defend-luka-doncic-amid-reports-of-conditioning-issues">traded to the Lakers by the Dallas Mavericks</a> ahead of the 2025 NBA trade deadline, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ccn-jmvuCL8&amp;t=182s" rel="noopener">he was confused</a>.</p><p>“When it first happened, I was in shock because, obviously, you know, I haven’t played in a couple of years. My first thing was ‘Who the hell wants me?'” Morris told his brother Marcus during a recent episode of the “TWIN$nWIN$” podcast. “Who wants to trade for me?”</p><p>But Markieff also said that reaction came before he learned that superstar guard Luka Doncic was part of the trade.</p><p>Markieff had only played seven games for the Mavericks before the trade, scoring just a total of 12 points with eight rebounds and six assists through 41 minutes, so the idea that a team wanted his services appeared to come as a surprise for the 35-year-old former Kansas Jayhawks star. It only made much more sense to him once the complete details of the trade were laid out.</p><h2><b>Markieff Morris returns to the Lakers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Indiana-Pacers-forward-Jarace-Walker-5-moves-the-ball-against-Los-Angeles-Lakers-forward-Markieff-Morris-88.jpg"><figcaption>Gary A. Meanwhile, Dallas got Anthony Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. As for the Jazz, they received Jalen Hood-Schifino and a pair of second-round picks.</p><p>Markieff, however, will have the power to decide which direction he will go after the end of the 2024-25 NBA season, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-markieff-morris-contract-2024-25-season">he is on an expiring contract</a> that is paying him just north of $2 million this campaign.</p><p>While not expected to produce ample numbers for the Lakers, Markieff brings experience, toughness and depth to his new team’s frontcourt.</p><p>Markieff, who was selected in the first round (13th overall) by the Phoenix Suns in the 2011 NBA draft, is familiar with the environment in LA. Doncic was traded alongside Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis and Max Christie, with Jalen Hood-Schifino heading to the Utah Jazz.</p><p>The trade caught everyone completely off guard and by surprise, with many even thinking ESPN’s Shams Charania had his social media account hacked. Within 20 minutes, other NBA insiders confirmed ESPN’s report.</p><p>Among the reasons the Mavs reportedly traded away the 25-year old Luka Doncic were concerns about his conditioning. The Slovenian superstar has dealt with a handful of calf issues over his young career, and a few outlets reported his fondness for alcohol.</p><p>On Tuesday morning, following Luka Doncic’s introductory press conference at the Lakers practice facility, Markieff Morris made sure to shut down those criticisms.</p><p>“He’s a great guy, man,” <a href="https://twitter.com/TomerAzarly/status/1886835619692675199" rel="noopener">Markieff Morris told ClutchPoints</a> on Tuesday morning. “Super low maintenance. Don’t need much. One of the only guys I’ve been on a team with that’ll play though any injury if he can get on the court. I hear stuff about him not being in shape, but if you can go in an NBA game and get 30, 15, and 10 like it’s nothing, then I don’t know what shape is. I don’t… I’m confused. You’ll see it really soon. With stuff like that and attention, I think there’s always positive and negative things that come out. But, you know, he’s a very good person, he’s a very hard worker, he’s a very great teammate. He’s grown over the years and he’s always pushed his teammates to become better. I have nothing but positive things to say about him.”</p><p>One outlet even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-mavericks-conditioning-concerns-big-motive-for-luka-doncic-lakers">reported that the new Lakers’ star was eyeing 270 lbs</a> after missing the last month due to a calf strain.</p><p>“The biggest thing, when talking to people around the league, was the concern about Luka’s conditioning. As we all know, and as has been reported, he’s gotten up to 270 pounds. The Dallas Mavericks were feeling like it could end up being a Joel Embiid-type situation.”</p><p>In just 22 games this season, Luka Doncic is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. The Mavericks were rumored to have interest in re-signing Morris throughout the offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-markieff-morris-message-dallas-free-agency">Morris also seemed to have interest in returning to Dallas</a>. Sure enough, an agreement was reached but the terms of the deal have yet to be announced.</p><p>Morris, 35, is not going to make or break the Mavs’ season. However, Mavericks players appeared to appreciate having Morris on the roster throughout the 2023-24 season. He only averaged 8.3 minutes per outing across 26 games played, but Morris’ veteran leadership was crucial to the team’s success.</p><p>The forward has played at the NBA level since 2011. He understands what it takes to compete in the NBA. Morris is able to offer advice to younger players while leading by example during practices. He is well-respected and his leadership certainly played a role in the Mavericks’ decision to agree to re-sign him.</p><h2><b>What Markieff Morris move means for Mavericks’ roster</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Markieff-Morris-before-game-2-of-the-2024-NBA-Finals.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Mavs roster was already set with 15 contracts. That means the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-aj-lawson-roster-markieff-morris">Mavericks will need to clear a spot on the roster</a>. Perhaps Dallas will consider making a trade. If not, though, the Mavs may need to release a player.</p><p>Dwight Powell is the Mavs’ longest tenured player and Dallas seems to want to keep him on the roster. Powell doesn’t offer much production at this point, but he does provide respectable depth.</p><p>AJ Lawson’s two-way deal was converted to an NBA contract in 2023-24. With the Mavs likely not being willing to move on from Powell, Lawson’s future with the team may be in question with the Morris move.</p><p>Olivier-Maxence Proser and Jaden Hardy are young players with especially intriguing ceilings. The same can be said for Lawson, but the chances of Dallas moving on from Prosper or Hardy appear to be slim.</p><p>Dante Exum may be another candidate, but he does provide necessary guard depth.</p><p>The Mavs will need to make a difficult decision. Signing Morris would require the Mavs to make another roster move, however. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-aj-lawson-roster-markieff-morris">AJ Lawson has been mentioned as a possible candidate</a> to lose his roster spot in the event that Morris is re-signed.</p><p>The Mavs appreciate what Lawson brings to the table, though. His upside is also quite intriguing. But Morris’ veteran leadership proved to be valuable during the 2023-24 campaign. He saw just 8.3 minutes of action in those contests.</p><p>Again, though, the leadership element is what stands out for Morris. Some teams may opt against using a roster spot on a player who is primarily a veteran leader above all else. However, the Mavericks enjoyed having Morris on the team. If he impacts winning, which he certainly did in 2023-24, there is an argument to be made for re-signing him.</p><p>Lawson is a talented young player, though.
