Thybulle is a two-time member of the All-Defensive Team. He was dealing with knee soreness throughout the preseason and decided to address it now rather than let the injury linger.</p><p>Thybulle is heading into his sixth NBA season. He was taken in the first round (20th overall) in the 2019 draft by the Boston Celtics but was traded to the 76ers immediately. He was an important player for Philly for years before they decided to part ways.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-player-shock-nba-breakout-2024-25-season"> The Blazers</a> are a young team who are in the midst of a rebuild and Thybulle gives them ample experience.</p><p>The Blazers ranked 23rd in the Association in defensive rating last season and finished the campaign with a poor 21-61 record. Portland will be hoping Scoot Henderson can take a major jump in Year 2 after showing promise at times in his rookie season. There’s definitely some talent on this roster; they just lack veteran presence. Thybulle is one of their oldest players alongside Deandre Ayton and Jerami Grant.</p><p>Portland is 2-1 in preseason action so far and will face the Utah Jazz on Friday evening. But the Portland Trail Blazers rookie boasts rare physical tools for a point guard regardless, his broad shoulders, long, chiseled arms and massive hands certainly set to ease his acclimation to the speed and strength of NBA opponents. It’s not like his gaudy dimensions have cost Henderson much speed, burst or leaping ability, either. He’s already a top-five athlete among NBA floor generals at just 19 years old.</p><p>As much as that physical prowess will help Henderson throughout his NBA career, he’s still learning how to best apply it on defensive end of the floor as the 2023-24 regular season dawns. Just ask Matisse Thybulle, who compared his young teammate to an oversized, <a href="https://twitter.com/highkin/status/1715470339457851815" rel="noopener">accidental school-yard bully</a> given his propensity for fouling during preseason action.</p><p>“You ever see kids who grow to be way bigger and stronger than everyone else early on, and they’re accidentally hurting people? That’s Scoot at this point,” Thybulle said of Henderson, per Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report. “He’s so strong and athletic, and he’s got to learn how to use those things to his advantage, as opposed to having them used against him. Because he’s so strong, he can blow up a lot of plays and get over screens, but with these savvy vets, if you use too much force, it’s going to end up being a foul. For him, it’s finding that balance. It’s always going to be hard for rookies. The refs aren’t giving you the benefit of the doubt. I think he’s going to learn. It’s trial by error, and it’s frustrating. But he’s lucky he has the intangibles. He has the strength, he has the athleticism. He joined G League Ignite as a 17-year-old, biding his time with the developmental program for two seasons until becoming draft eligible following 2022-23.</p><p>Just like Henderson’s body and athleticism will help him ease into life in the NBA, so will that ample experience running the show against high-level competition. He’s Portland’s undisputed starting point guard entering 2023-24, a role he seemed mostly prepared for during preseason action. Henderson averaged 13.5 points and 5.8 assists across four exhibition games, enduring relative struggles with his jumper and ball security while nevertheless proving his worth as a day one starter with obvious poise and pace as a playmaker.</p><p>Eventually reaching his sky-high ceiling will depend most on how Henderson’s shot develops in coming years. But the aspect of his game that needs most work in wake of the preseason is defending without fouling. Henderson averaged a <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/stats/2024/Per_36/Qualified/fouls/All/desc/1/Preseason?rookies=" rel="noopener">whopping 5.7 fouls per-36 minutes</a> in the preseason, highest among all rookie guards. He fouled out in 31 minutes against the Phoenix Suns in his second exhibition game, too.</p><p>Henderson’s intersection of physicality, playmaking feel and burgeoning skill makes him one of the most exciting lead guard prospects to enter the league in recent memory. Very few rookies are net positive players, and fewer still are quality defenders. It’s likely only a matter of time until <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-scoot-henderson-gets-100-real-on-need-to-improve-ahead-of-rookie-season" rel="noopener">Henderson is a force</a> on both sides of the ball. However, adding a defensive star like Thybulle would have benefitted their roster as well. Dallas was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavs-offer-sheet-to-matisse-thybulle-after-grant-williams-sign-and-trade-revealed" rel="noopener">reportedly interested</a> in adding him, but things simply could not come to fruition since Portland matched the offer.</p><p>If Thybulle did indeed want to join Dallas, one has to wonder how he will fare upon his expected return to Portland. He’s still a player who’s going to give everything he has, but perhaps a trade request could be made at some point down the road.</p><p>Thybulle spent the first few years of his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was never much of an offensive threat, but established himself as a reliable defensive presence. Between his hustle and skill on the defensive side, many teams began to develop interest in acquiring him.</p><p>Thybulle was traded from Philadelphia to the Blazers this past season. Portland clearly was impressed by his performance since they kept him on the team instead of letting him walk and joining the Mavs.</p><p>Dallas will likely continue to pursue defensive-first players with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the charge on offense. The Dallas <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-blazers-matisse-thybulle-offer-sheet">Mavericks signed Thybulle</a>, a restricted free agent, to a three-year, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavs-offer-sheet-to-matisse-thybulle-after-grant-williams-sign-and-trade-revealed" rel="noopener">$33 million offer sheet.</a> On Thursday, the Blazers <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1676978032546856961?s=12&amp;t=bm8qRt18zuhlXFzV7rKRAQ">matched</a> the Mavs’ offer for Thybulle, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.</p><p>Highkin said that the Blazers <a href="https://twitter.com/highkin/status/1676765337390551041" rel="noopener">always planned</a> to keep Thybulle regardless of how the roster looks for next season. Portland received Thybulle from the Philadelphia 76ers as part of a four-team trade in February. The swingman started all 22 games he played with the Blazers, averaging 7.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.</p><p>Thybulle is an elite defender and should fit well into Portland’s long-term plans, though there was always the chance he’d rather join the Mavs and at least have a shot at playing postseason basketball, something the Blazers are unlikely to do in the next couple of years. Thybulle is a two-time All-Defensive Second-Team player and has the ability to guard multiple positions.</p><p>The Blazers will love to have that sort of player in their starting lineup and saw enough from Thybulle last season to make him that player. Thybulle can also shoot the three fairly well. Once Tybulle signs the offer sheet, the Portland Trail Blazers will have two days to match it.</p><p>It remains to be seen what the Blazers will do, though they certainly have bigger issues to address after Damian Lillard requested a trade. The situation might play well in the Mavs’ favor, though it won’t be a surprise if Portland decides to match. After all, Thybulle is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA over the last four seasons, having won two All-NBA Defensive Second Team honors in both 2021 and 2022.</p><p>Should the Mavs be able to acquire Thybulle, they would be able to solidify and fix their biggest issue from last season: defense. Free agency also saw them bring back sharpshooter Seth Curry, who suited up for Dallas for two seasons (2016-17 and 2019-20), shooting 43.9 percent from 3-point range in that stretch.</p><p>Prior to that, the Mavs added forward Olivier Maxence-Prosper and center Dereck Lively II via the 2023 NBA Draft, making good on their promise to add defensive pieces that can complement and support a leaky defensive backcourt of Luka and Kyrie.</p><p>Now, as Dallas marches on, they have their eyes a pair of restricted free agents.</p><p>The Mavs, per NBA insider Marc Stein, “have interest in two restricted free agents <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/what-im-hearing-as-nba-free-agency" rel="noopener">as they seek to address</a> their significant need for a good defender on the wing: Portland’s Matisse Thybulle and Boston’s Grant Williams.”</p><p>“The Blazers and Celtics have been sending behind-the-scenes signals to interested teams that they intend to match any offer sheet for Thybulle or Williams,” Stein adds.</p><p>The Mavs still have the $12.4 mid-level exception at their disposal to make another roster addition, which could be the Portland Trail Blazers’ Matisse Thybulle or Boston Celtics’ Grant Williams.</p><p>Barring a trade, Williams — who has long been linked to Dallas — may be a better fit for their roster as currently constructed.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After originally making a name for himself with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Portland Trail Blazers acquired Thybulle during the 2022-23 season. Portland was impressed by Thybulle and will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-free-agency-plans-matisse-thybulle-revealed" rel="noopener">try to keep him</a> on the roster. However, he’s likely to draw interest from around the NBA in free agency.</p><p>Without further ado, let’s take a look at the three best free agency destinations for Matisse Thybulle.</p><h2><b>3. Los Angeles Lakers</b></h2><p>The Lakers used a second-half resurgence to reach the NBA playoffs. Los Angeles then performed well during the postseason prior to being swept in the Western Conference Finals by the Denver Nuggets.</p><p>LeBron James and Anthony Davis led the Lakers this past year, while a number of role players stepped up around them. However, the Lakers still endured struggles on defense and in long-range shooting. As a result, Thybulle would make sense for the Lakers.</p><p>LA would need to figure out their financial situation first. They have a number of looming free agents who they may opt to re-sign. If they can find the money to pay Matisse Thybulle though, he would be a strong option in 2023 NBA free agency.</p><p>He shot just under 39 percent from beyond the arc after joining the Trail Blazers last season. Additionally, he’s always been known for his defense prowess. In fact, one may argue that Thybulle would be the perfect addition for the Lakers.</p><p>However, Los Angeles checks in as the third best landing destination for him.</p><h2><b>2. Houston Rockets</b></h2><p>The Rockets are on the verge of turning things around. Following another down year during the 2022-23 campaign, their core is developing and the prospect of possibly adding James Harden has fans excited. But Harden won’t automatically change everything about the Rockets. Houston still needs to add important depth/role players.</p><p>The Rockets struggled in a number of different facets this past season, notably dealing with defensive concerns. Matisse Thybulle would be a tremendous signing in that sense for Houston.</p><p>Thybulle and the 76ers didn’t <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-joel-embiid-admits-hes-unhappy-with-matisse-thybulle-eye-opening-comments-on-philly-stint" rel="noopener">end on the best of terms</a>. Regardless, he played a pivotal role while in Philadelphia early in his career. Despite still being a young player, Thybulle has already been in the league since 2019. As a result, his veteran leadership would be crucial for this Rockets team as well.</p><p>Any offense he provides would simply be icing on the cake. He’s never been a player who averages many points, but Thybulle is capable of making a bucket when it counts. And as aforementioned, he’s proven to be an efficient shooter at times.</p><h2><b>1. Portland Trail Blazers</b></h2><p>Finally, the best option for Matisse Thybulle in free agency is a return to Portland.</p><p>Thybulle turned his season around in 2022-23 following a difficult start with Philadelphia. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-matisse-thybulle-speaks-out-on-improved-shooting-after-trade-to-blazers" rel="noopener">He even admitted</a> that playing with Damian Lillard and the Blazers helped him get back on track.</p><p>“Having that belief too, and also just at that point, too it was just like a belief,” Thybulle <a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/lists/matisse-thybulle-enjoyed-time-with-sixers-opens-up-on-being-traded/" rel="noopener">said</a>, via Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire. “Like he saw something in me that wasn’t showing up in the numbers. So to have that kind of support from your head coach and then also like having known Damian for a while, knowing that I had that support from him too. I think it just allowed for me to step into that role a little bit more seamlessly.”</p><p>The Blazers seem to want Thybulle back, and he probably wouldn’t mind returning either. Since he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers at this season’s trade deadline, Thybulle has not only increased his shot attempts from three-point range, but he’s improved his shooting percentage as well. Thybulle <a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/lists/matisse-thybulle-enjoyed-time-with-sixers-opens-up-on-being-traded/" rel="noopener">attributed</a> his shooting to the belief the Blazers have in him as per Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire.</p><p>“Having that belief too, and also just at that point, too it was just like a belief. Like he saw something in me that wasn’t showing up in the numbers. So to have that kind of support from your head coach and then also like having known Damian for a while, knowing that I had that support from him too. I think it just allowed for me to step into that role a little bit more seamlessly,” Thybulle said.”</p><p>Whatever it was, Thybulle has become a much more willing and confident shooter for the Blazers. In ten games with the Blazers so far, Thybulle is taking 4.4 attempts from three-point range and knocking them down at a 40.9 percent clip, both career-highs. In 10 games with Portland, Thybulle has not only started in every game but averaged what would be a career-high 30.4 minutes per game if extrapolated for the entire season.</p><p>Though highly regarded as a disruptive defensive presence, Thybulle is also averaging 7.5 points per game on 40.9 percent shooting from 3-point range with the Blazers. His ability to fit into the 3-and-D archetype in the backcourt, particularly when assessing the defensive potential of volume scorers Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons, is a fine change of pace for Portland.</p><p>Players like Cam Reddish and Shaedon Sharpe may be more highly touted because of their potential as two-way playmakers. Nonetheless, Billups makes it clear that Thybulle’s focus on defense and unselfish play are valuable to him as well.</p><p>“He’s the type of guy that we like, that’s going to compete on the defensive end and is going to play a selfless game on the offensive end,” says Billups. “And he’s just a winning spirit.”</p><p>That’s certainly high praise from Billups, a former NBA player and champion that was as well-known for his defense and unselfishness as his penchant for hitting big shots.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Portland Trail Blazers wing was traded by the Philadelphia 76ers a month ago and the change of scenery has done him well, as he explained in a recent interview.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-signs-point-to-sixers-matisse-thybulle-trade-before-deadline" rel="noopener">writing was on the wall</a> for Thybulle’s future with Philly leading up to the trade deadline. The 26-year-old wing said that he encountered more <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-matisse-thybulle-portland-trail-blazers-20230310.html" rel="noopener">“fear-based play”</a> with the Sixers than he has in his 10 games so far with the Blazers, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.</p><p>“Any player that’s playing out of a place of fear is going to struggle,” Matisse Thybulle said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Like there’s going to just be friction in everything you try to do. But when you play for a place of just discipline and receptiveness to what the game’s giving and what you are reading from it. The Sixers took part in a four-team trade that netted them Jalen McDaniels and cost them Matisse Thybulle.</p><p>While the Sixers also received two future second-round picks and sent one out, the crux of the deal was receiving McDaniels, a young, athletic forward from the Charlotte Hornets that the team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-grades-after-trading-matisse-thybulle-for-jalen-mcdaniels-at-trade-deadline">hopes can be an upgrade</a> over Thybulle, who will join the Portland Trail Blazers. McDaniels met with head coach Doc Rivers as Morey met with reporters but will be out in the Sixers’ Friday matchup against the New York Knicks due to the trade still being processed.</p><p>“First of all, I just want to say thank you to Matisse,” Morey said to open the press conference. “Great run here, gave us a lot of great minutes, became a fan favorite and we wish him all the best in Portland. We know he’s gonna have a long NBA career.”</p><p>After wishing the former Sixer well, Morey pivoted to the newest one, who he said has the potential to become a starter. “A big theme of our season this year was to prepare for the playoffs and the championship, as you guys know. We wanted to make sure we gave Doc as many two-way players as possible,” he said. “And we think Jalen is one of the up-and-coming solid defenders and is somebody that’s a little easier to keep on the floor in a lot of matchups. We like what he brings and we’re excited.”</p><p>McDaniels, who turned 25 years old a week ago, averages 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game this season. The 6-foot-9 wing shoots 44.7 percent from the field, 32.2 percent from deep and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line. His NBA experience to this point has come only on Hornets teams that never came close to being title contenders. To the Sixers, that isn’t a massive issue.</p><p>“We looked at all options for the team. We really think Jalen’s sort of a hidden gem,” Morey said. “Sometimes when teams struggle that much, there are players in there that really just need an opportunity to show what they can do on a better team.”</p><p>While Jalen McDaniels is bigger than Matisse Thybulle and has shown more potential on the offensive end, Thybulle’s defense made him one of the Sixers’ <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/PHI/2023.html#pbp::11" rel="noopener">most impactful players</a>. Trading him for McDaniels seems like a lateral move as his role will likely be the same as Thybulle’s — use his athleticism to his advantage, play good defense and take open shots. What exactly makes him an upgrade, then?</p><p>“I think it’s pretty straightforward,” Morey said. “If you’re making it harder for the team on offense, I think it makes it harder to keep you on the floor defensively.” While McDaniels’ shooting splits are below average, his free-throw percentage suggests he has the potential to be a solid shooter, which Thybulle never consistently was. In 55 games last season, McDaniels shot 38.0 percent from deep.</p><p>The Sixers making only one move that cost them a rotation player suggested that they were eager to decrease their payroll and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-phillys-main-trade-deadline-focus-will-annoy-fans" rel="noopener">duck the luxury tax</a>, which the McDaniels-Thybulle swap accomplished. Morey addressed those concerns when asked about them.</p><p>“The focus was just [to] make the team better. We feel like we did that,” he said. “I think as part of my job, I have to look at the bigger picture. The Philadelphia 76ers ended up making just one move, which was centered around a swap of Matisse Thybulle for Jalen McDaniels. It’s a move that could work out for the Sixers but is far from a hugely impactful one.</p><p>The Sixers’ <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-trade-deadline-sixers-get-jalen-mcdaniels-send-matisse-thybulle-to-blazers" rel="noopener">only move on deadline day</a> was taking part in a three-team trade with the Charlotte Hornets and Portland Trail Blazers. They sent out Thybulle and a 2023 second-round pick while receiving McDaniels and two future second-round picks (one in 2024 and another in 2029). The move got them <a href="https://www.libertyballers.com/2023/1/17/23506715/repeater-tax-could-affect-how-sixers-approach-trade-deadline-daryl-morey-josh-harris?_ga=2.214694674.447171560.1675978104-347070200.1675889020&amp;_gl=1*uvhzxo*_ga*MzQ3MDcwMjAwLjE2NzU4ODkwMjA.*_ga_2M5GYNY1YS*MTY3NTk4MDM1MS4zLjEuMTY3NTk4MDM2Ni40NS4wLjA." rel="noopener">below the luxury tax threshold</a>, avoiding that tax and the repeat offender tax.</p><p>Despite a lot of holes to fill on the roster — just about all of which were laid out in their most recent loss to the short-handed Boston Celtics — the Sixers made just one move ahead of the trade deadline. Let’s give grades to what they did and did not do.</p><h2>Jalen McDaniels-Matisse Thybulle swap: C+</h2><p>The Sixers’ rotation will seemingly stay the same with a simple swap involving two defensive-minded wings. His shooting splits — 53.4 percent from inside the arc, 32.2 percent from behind it, 84.6 percent from the free-throw line on low volume — are not that impressive and his ability to create his own shot is not to be consistently trusted.</p><p>McDaniels being a questionable upgrade over Thybulle is even worse considering that he will be an unrestricted free agent after the season while Thybulle will be restricted. Although the Sixers have his bird rights, re-signing him is more complicated. Getting an additional second-round pick is nice but neither of them is likely to be as valuable as the one they traded away. Plus, one of them will not convey until well after Joel Embiid’s prime.</p><p>It should also be noted that years ago, <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/story/2019-06-07/jalen-mcdaniels-court-case-videos-sdsu-aztecs-basketball-nba">two lawsuits were filed against McDaniels</a> over him filming women performing intimate acts without their consent and sharing it among friends, which had serious adverse effects on the women’s lives. He apologized to them afterward and seemingly took responsibility for his behavior during the pre-draft process.</p><p>Just how well Jalen McDaniels can fit into a team with legitimate playoff aspirations remains to be seen, though surrounding him with more talent could help bring out the best in him. On paper, the Sixers got a potential upgrade off the bench and got more second-round picks to use in future trades. We’ll see how far that actually moves the needle for them.</p><h2>Not trading for a backup center: D-</h2><p>The Sixers’ recent history with the backup center position has been as sore of a subject as there can be. When there were rumors that the team was looking to add another backup alongside Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed, fans were ecstatic. Those hopeful feelings faded after the 3:00 PM EST trade deadline passed as teams all over the league found backup big men for prices that Philadelphia seemingly could have matched.</p><p>Jarred Vanderbilt was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-sixers-eyeing-trade-for-jazz-big-man-as-joel-embiid-backup" rel="noopener">reportedly a top target</a> for the Sixers but he ended up being used in a three-team deal. Still, Mo Bamba was traded for only Patrick Beverley (who was waived) and a second-round pick. Mike Muscala was traded for second-round picks. Guys like Andre Drummond and Kelly Olynyk weren’t moved but also could have likely been moved by their respective teams for the right price.</p><p>The Sixers should see plenty of names in the buyout market with the likes of Nerlens Noel, Serge Ibaka, Khem Birch potentially up for grabs. Although none of them seem like huge difference-makers, Philly could find an upgrade. This is the lone reason why they don’t get an “F” here. Refusing to add a single center in the buyout market would be a team building malpractice.</p><p>The good news for the Sixers is that the Eastern Conference playoff picture didn’t get that much tougher. Although the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics each found upgrades in the form of Jae Crowder and Muscala respectively, the Nets are starting over and the Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t make a single move. Some other teams below them made moves but the Sixers still have the potential to make a playoff run.</p><p>That potential combined with just one seemingly lateral move makes the 2023 trade deadline disappointing for the Sixers. They didn’t fix any currently existing issues and suggested to their fans that simply saving money was their overall priority. If McDaniels isn’t a big upgrade and they still fail to fix the backup center issue, Philly may have wasted its best chance in years to make a deep playoff run.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Matisse Thybulle is going to the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Hornets forward Jalen McDaniels is joining the Sixers.</p><p>Thybulle is <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1623737940655370248?s=20&amp;t=Cl6juBFEPGMzzvIdVU90vw" rel="noopener">heading to the Blazers</a> while the Sixers receive McDaniels, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Sixers will give up a <a href="https://twitter.com/KyleNeubeck/status/1623740597432463361?s=20&amp;t=bolZBqXLr1DD_cAxQNtB5g">2023 second-round pick</a> that belongs to Charlotte, perhaps their biggest trade chip, but also net two future second-round picks, according to Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice. Although his defense has been helpful for the Sixers, his offense has failed to come around. He will serve as the replacement for Josh Hart in the Trail Blazers’ lineup.</p><p>Jalen McDaniels, a 25-year-old forward on an expiring contract, gives the Sixers athleticism and versatility at the forward spot.
