Turning 33-years-old in September, the Australian guard will be leaving the NBA to once again <a href="https://nbl.com.au/news/united-secures-return-of-aussie-great" rel="noopener">play for Melbourne United</a> in the NBL.</p><p>“I’m really excited to be coming back to Melbourne United,” Dellavedova said, per the team’s press release. “I want to come back and win a Championship here. It’s a great club that has a really strong culture and I’m happy to be back a part of it.”</p><p>Spending the 2021-22 season with Melbourne, Dellavedova decided to make a one-year return to the NBA to be a veteran presence for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-mike-brown-wins-coach-of-the-year-award-after-snapping-16-year-playoff-drought" rel="noopener">Mike Brown</a> and the Kings. His role was limited, but the veteran guard proved to be a valuable asset in the locker room during the team’s historic 48-34 season. Playing for Brown when he coached Cleveland during Dellavedova’s rookie season played a factor in him joining Sacramento this past season.</p><p>Dellavedova has rejoined Melbourne on a new two-year deal and has his <a href="https://www.espn.com/nbl/story/_/id/37659939/nbl-matthew-dellavedova-returning-melbourne-united" rel="noopener">sights set</a> on participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics for Australia, as he told ESPN recently that playing in both the World Cup and Olympics is a goal of his.</p><p>Over the span of his nine seasons in the NBA, Dellavedova made a name for himself by being a tough-minded defender. He spent the first three seasons of his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers, proving to be a key role player during their title run in 2016. The 31-year-old, who currently plies his trade with Melbourne United in his native of Australia, got posterized in a pretty bad way and it nearly led to a violent fight between players of the two teams.</p><p>Dellavedova’s Melbourne United were taking on SEM Phoenix on Saturday and at one point, the former Cavs stud found himself on the wrong end of a LeBron James-like poster dunk (sort of reminds me of LeBron’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-QTiByTKaI">epic slam</a> on Jason Terry many years ago). According to reports, the 30-year-old has decided to part ways with the Cavs to return to his native of Australia.</p><p>According to <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2021/07/matthew-dellavedova-to-leave-nba-join-melbourne-united-of-the-nbl.html">Chris Fedor of cleveland.com</a>, Delly has agreed to terms with Melbourne United of the NBL. The 6-foot-3 point guard parts ways with the Cavs after six seasons on two separate stints.</p><p>Dellavedova joined the Cavs as an undrafted rookie in 2013. He was part of the LeBron James-led 2016 side that historically won the NBA title over the Golden State Warriors.</p><p>After that memorable season, the Cavs traded Dellavedova to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he spent the next three years of his career. He then re-joined the Cavs as a free agent in 2018. Delly’s current deal expired at the end of the 2020-21 campaign which made him an unrestricted free agent. Cleveland decided not to offer him a new contract, and he also wasn’t able to secure a new deal with any other team in the NBA. This led to his decision to head back home to Australia to join the domestic league.</p><p>Dellavedova holds career averages with the Cavs of <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dellama01.html#all_per_game-playoffs_per_game">5.3 points</a>, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. He played just 13 games for Cleveland <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-kevin-love-speaks-out-on-the-impact-matthew-dellavedova-has-on-cleveland/">last term</a>, averaging 17.2 minutes off the bench.</p><p>Matthew Dellavedova is a well-loved figure among the Cavs faithful and everything he’s contributed to the franchise is appreciated. Hoping to preempt a potential drive from the Warriors point guard, Dellavedova met Curry just behind the arc, looking to use his upper-body strength to push the former-MVP off course and deny him an angle towards the interior. Unfortunately for Delly, Steph is a lot stronger than he looks.</p><p>Not only did Curry get the better of their collision in the midrange–sending the Cavs guard flying towards the baseline–but Steph promptly recovered and reversed course back out towards the arc, firing a dagger three-point shot that extended the Warriors lead back to double-digits.</p><p>Not only did the sequence help pace the Warriors to a victory over Cleveland Thursday night, but it was yet another example of the type of heroics Steph has displayed as of late. Over the past eight contests entering their game against the Cavaliers, Curry has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/golden-state-warriors/stats">averaged</a> over 38 points per game, on 55% shooting from the field, and 49% from three, a staggering performance that has catapulted him back into MVP consideration.</p><p>As Dellavedova can tell you, Steph continues to find new ways to embarrass opponents.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Upon both of their awaited returns, Love <a href="https://www.basketballnews.com/stories/return-of-love-dellavedova-gives-cavs-hope-for-playoff-push">spoke about the impact</a> that Dellavedova has on the Cavaliers.</p><p>During a conversation about Dellavedova, Love pinpointed the veteran point guard as the ‘lifeblood of the team’. After a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, J.B. Bickerstaff also shared his thoughts on Dellavedova returning to the lineup to aid the team moving forward.</p><blockquote>“It just goes to show you his commitment, his dedication, but what intelligence can bring to the game,” Bickerstaff said, via the Associated Press. “His mind wasn’t off for 13 months. When you play the way that he plays and you think the game that way that he thinks it, you can have an impact. Toughness on the defensive end, leadership, he’s always a bonus.</blockquote><p>Due to a myriad of injuries, Dellavedova made his <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-matthew-dellavedova-forecast-will-get-cleveland-fans-excited/">season debut</a> on Thursday, logging 16 minutes for the Cavaliers. While he didn’t record a single point, he dished out five assists, and he made a few efforts plays that were appreciated by his head coach.</p><p>Though, it should be noted that Dellavedova was with the Milwaukee Bucks for a couple of seasons before landing back with Cleveland. Love and Dellavedova remain as the only two players remaining from the 2016 NBA Championship team on the Cavaliers. Nevertheless, it’s apparent that Love and other members of the Cavaliers believe Dellavedova is a key contributor to the team, whether he’s notching numbers in the box score or not.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
