They gave up 72 points as they trailed by 16 points at halftime. They tried to make a rally as they reduced the deficit in the second half, but they were unable to keep up with Toronto down the stretch.</p><p>Ball movement and turnovers played key roles in this matchup. The Raptors constantly created shots, finishing with 37 assists, while limiting their turnovers to 13. It wasn’t the same for the Nets, dishing out 28 assists while turning the ball over 23 times.</p><p>Four players scored in double-digits on Brooklyn’s behalf, including Porter. Ziaire Williams had a solid display off the bench with 20 points, two rebounds and a steal. He shot 8-of-14 overall, including 4-of-8 from downtown. Egor Demin came next with 14 points and five rebounds, while Nic Claxton provided 13 points and 11 rebounds.</p><p>With their preseason over, the Nets will gear up for their regular-season opener. After six seasons in a complementary role with the Denver Nuggets, the 27-year-old has an opportunity to be the Brooklyn Nets’ leading man.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/grading-nets-michael-porter-jr-cam-johnson-trade-nuggets">Porter Jr.’s offseason trade reunited him</a> with Jordi Fernandez, who served as a Nuggets assistant from 2016 to 2022. Two days away from Brooklyn’s first preseason game, the Nets head coach outlined expectations for Porter Jr.’s expanded role.</p><p>“It’s not going to be better or worse, it’s just going to be different. He’s going to be asked to do different things,” Fernandez said. “I’m going to want him to be aggressive. I’m going to ask him to shoot the ball, to be the best cutter on the floor, because he’s a big target and a very good rebounder. So, if he’s a star in his role and plays through his strengths, I’m not going to be asking him to dribble too much because that’s not what I envision him to be very efficient at… But he can shoot, he can rebound, all those things that I just mentioned. I’m excited to watch him play in a different role.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-michael-porter-reveals-plan-break-through-nuggets-plateau">Porter Jr. has said he felt his ceiling “plateaued” in Denver</a> with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray dominating the offense.</p><h2>How Michael Porter Jr. is acclimating to new offensive role at Nets training camp</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Michael-Porter-Jr.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The 6-foot-10 forward <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/portemi01.html" rel="noopener">averaged</a> 17.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists on 49/40/78 shooting splits over his last three seasons. However, he’s never attempted more than 13.6 shots per game in his career. That number should rise on a Nets team with a severe shot-creation deficit.</p><p>Outside of Cam Thomas, whose Nets future looks increasingly uncertain after a failed contract negotiation, Porter Jr. is Brooklyn’s only high-level shotmaker.</p><p>“It’s just different spots on the floor that I’m trying to get comfortable in, specifically the mid-post area. I feel like I can score six to eight points easily, just getting comfortable in there, facing up, and shooting over the top, or bumping somebody and getting downhill,” Porter Jr. said of his new role. “So in camp, that’s been a place for me that I feel really comfortable in that mid-range area. Obviously on our Denver team, that was a kind of a spot that obviously Joker was in a lot, sometimes we post Aaron [Gordon] up in the mid post; but it’s somewhere that I feel very comfortable getting to my shot from, and I think that’ll be a place that down the stretch of games when things slow down, I can I can utilize that.</p><p>“But yeah, the role is different. We’re still exploring different things. But the coaches are doing a great job early on at training camp, having me run through different actions and do different things in the scrimmages, and I’m feeling pretty comfortable with it.”</p><p>While Porter Jr. will enjoy an expanded role, Fernandez must craft it within the constraints of the forward’s skill set. As the coach admitted, ball-handling is not one of Porter Jr.’s strengths. Those responsibilities will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-ben-saraf-reveals-how-brooklyns-rookie-point-guards-fit">primarily lie with Brooklyn’s trio of rookie point guards</a>: Egor Demin, Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf.</p><p>The Nets’ rookies will shoulder a heavy burden on a team without a veteran floor general. Brooklyn envisions Porter Jr.’s floor spacing, cutting, and secondary shot creation acting as a security blanket for its young ball handlers.</p><p>“He’s going to be great. He’s a player who opens up the court and is a target. And, again, he can shoot over people with playmaking inside,” Fernandez said.<br>“He’s a very good fit, or at least I envision him to be a very good fit. So once I kind of put all those pieces together, and I didn’t just pay attention to the physical side of things, I was able to have a very well-rounded approach to my rehab. And since then, I haven’t had any problems with my back. He was cheering people on. But it’s an 82-game season, so obviously there’s going to be highs and lows. Any player on the team—not just Russ— We were all kind of, at points in the season, tripping about minutes, tripping about this, tripping about that. So it was normal things through an 82-game season. But me and Russ had a good relationship. I looked up to Russ in a lot of ways.”</p><p>Westbrook has had a great career in the league, being on championship-caliber teams and also winning an MVP of his own. However, he struggled last playoffs while playing through a shoulder sprain, averaging 9.1 points and 5.5 rebounds on 39/34/71 shooting splits.</p><p>The forward <a href="https://x.com/YESNetwork/status/1970536523427922033" rel="noopener">revealed on Tuesday</a> at Nets media day that he could “barely lift his shoulder” during the playoffs. He added that he felt his struggles while playing hurt led to Denver trading him.</p><p>“When I had that injury, they told me it’s a three or four-month injury, like you’re probably done for the playoffs,” Porter Jr. said on YES Network. “But at that point, I didn’t feel like our team was deep enough to compete for a championship if I wasn’t at least out there as a decoy. I was putting myself in harm’s way from the media, the fans who were seeing me struggle and seeing me not being able to perform. And even if you’re not 100 percent, it’s the playoffs. So I kinda felt like, ‘What am I saving myself for?’ Even if I’m gonna get scrutiny from people, just go out there and risk it. And if it happens again next year and I’m in the playoffs and I’m not 100 percent, I’m going out there, regardless.”</p><p>While Porter Jr. feels his playoff struggles contributed to his getting traded, financials undoubtedly played a significant role in Devner’s decision. Swapping Porter Jr.’s $38.3 million salary for Johnson’s $21 million allowed the Nuggets to dip below the luxury tax and reset the repeater tax with a Christian Braun extension looming.</p><p>Johnson likely presents a slight upgrade over Porter Jr. Denver also added Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown on minimum contracts and acquired Jonas Valančiūnas in a trade.</p><p>Porter Jr. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCn9z3a35YQ" rel="noopener">feels Denver</a> has everything it needs to win another championship. Beautiful,” Hollinger wrote. “That Denver pick will take a while to deliver benefits, but the upside is undeniable. A lot of water can go under the bridge in seven years, but by 2032, Nikola Jokić will be 37. The Nuggets are likely to be at a low ebb after hemorrhaging draft picks to stay competitive in Joker’s prime while avoiding or minimizing their luxury-tax payments. The expected value on this pick is high, and here’s the other key: It doesn’t require the Nets to wait until 2032. That’s been his calling card for his entire career so far. His shooting was a key component to the Denver Nuggets’ recent championship, too. Despite getting some flak from fans due to his one-dimensional play, there’s no denying the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-michael-porter-jr-breaks-silence-brooklyn-trade"> now-Brooklyn Nets forward’s shooting ability</a>.</p><p>Porter seems to be extremely confident in his shooting. That’s already apparent in his style of play, but the Nets forward seemed to<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb4zlCmuY8o"> confirm his almost-irrational confidence in a recent Twitch stream.</a> Appearing on a Twitch stream, Porter said that there’s only one NBA player who’s “clearly” better than him in shooting ability: Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry.</p><p>” Stephen Curry—that’s the only one I’m giving like a clear ‘elite, can shoot better than me.’,” Porter said when asked about who’s a better shooter than him. “There’s dudes that are on the same level: I think Klay Thompson. KD, I think like… If I got in the gym, like Duncan Robinson—he probably can shoot with me. You know—Trae Young, Dame… But I think Steph is the only one that’s clearly a better shooter.”</p><p>That’s quite the bold statement from Porter. Curry is the greatest shooter of all-time, but there’s an argument to be made that Thompson is at least a top-five shooter in NBA history. He’s fifth all-time in three-pointers made while having nearly the same efficiency as Curry (albeit on a slightly lower volume, but still enough to be considered elite). Durant, on the other hand, doesn’t have the same three-point accolades as Curry or Thompson, but he’s widely-considered as one of the greatest mid-range shooters in NBA history. The Nets forward is essentially puttting himself in the same all-time conversations as these two stars.</p><p>Does Porter have the potential to be an all-time shooter? Definitely. He has a reputation of being a little too trigger-happy when shooting. That being said, his shooting percentage (career 40.6% shooter from deep) shows that even while taking “bad shots”, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-coach-michael-porter-jr-challenge-scoring-title">he has the shot-making ability to power through tough contests</a>. Can you name another player who could’ve won MVP five years?”</p><p>The comment adds to a growing chorus of voices recognizing the Serbian center’s place in basketball history. After playing with the Denver Nuggets for the first six years of his career, the forward was part of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-michael-porter-jr-trade-bombshell-cam-johnson-deal">trade that sent him to the Brooklyn Nets</a>. The former NBA champion has many memories from his time with the Nuggets. Winning a title is at the top, but Porter Jr. enjoyed his series against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers.</p><p>Porter Jr. and the Nuggets faced the Lakers in three playoff series since he joined the team in 2019. While James and Co. won the first matchup en route to a title, Denver got the better of them in 2023 and 2024. Porter Jr. liked matching up against a living legend in James when he got the opportunity. For him, playing against James was an honor because of how much he respects the four-time champion.</p><p>“Those series against ‘Bron were dope,” Porter Jr. said. “He’s the epitome of greatness is sports, and to be able to go into LA, we swept them one year. The other year we beat them 4-1 or 4-2, I think. It was a good feeling, and when you have so much respect for somebody like I do for LeBron, and to be able to go head to head and come out on top, it was lit, I’m not even gonna lie.”</p><p>Now that he is with the Nets, Porter Jr. will see LeBron twice per season. MPJ was the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, four years after The Joker entered the league.</p><p>Still, heading into his first NBA training camp, Porter Jr. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwvEsPGTN4A&amp;t=958s" rel="noopener">admits he wasn’t all that impressed</a> with Jokic at first, he said, per Glory Daze with Johnny Manziel.</p><p>“I really didn’t see it at first. Like, even when we went into training camp, I remember asking my teammates, I was like, ‘Wait, so this dude is really that nice?’ Like everybody keeps telling me, he’s that cold,” Porter Jr. said. “But in training camp, he and Mason Plumlee were kind of going head to head. And they were like, ‘No, Mike, wait till the real games come, you’re going to see this dude’s a problem. ‘He could score 50 every single night if he wanted to.’</p><p>“But, I didn’t see it at first, but I quickly found out that he is him and he is the best player in the world.
