A mild concern was amplified a couple of notches after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-tom-thibodeau-shoots-down-mikal-bridges-minutes-report">Thibodeau denied having a conversation with Bridges</a> about minutes. Soon, Chicken Little made his way through Madison Square Garden.</p><p>Anxiety declined a bit after the 28-year-old wing erupted for 33 points and nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday. Following the latest update, hopefully order will be restored among the Knickerbockers fan base.</p><p>After dropping an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-jalen-brunson-injury-update">injury timeline update on Jalen Brunson</a>, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1901070886201160136" rel="noopener">revealed where things currently stand</a> between Bridges and Thibodeau.</p><p>“After both of those comments were made publicly, I’m told that both Mikal Bridges and Tom Thibodeau held a closed-door meeting in Portland before that game,” he reported on NBA Countdown, ahead of the Knicks’ Saturday night road matchup against the Golden State Warriors.</p><p>“And it’s been described to me by everyone involved as a productive meeting, one {in which} both sides were able to hash things out, get their feelings across…. and both sides have moved on. The two-time NBA Coach of the Year knows he is not Mr. popularity when it comes to his teams, but he has built a reputation on being respected by his players. That relationship must be intact, particularly in these next couple of months.</p><p>Clearing the air is vital, but actually implementing change will not be easy for Thibodeau. Heck is it easy for any 67-year-old? Bridges logged 41 minutes in his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mikal-bridges-trail-blazers-home-crazy-3-pointer-buzzer">triumphant showing versus the Blazers</a>. His HC might be coming around in New York’s latest matchup, however. The former Villanova star got a few minutes of rest in the first half, so maybe he can slip under the 40-mark tonight. But game script might force Thibodeau’s hand, as the Warriors currently lead at time of print.</p><p>Bridges averages 37.8 minutes per contest, narrowly trailing teammate Josh Hart for the league lead. OG Anunoby ranks sixth. What really separates the Pennsylvania native from everyone else, however, is that he has never missed an NBA game in almost eight seasons. That is quite the burden to put on one’s body.</p><h2><b>Perhaps the Knickerbockers can use an iconic run as motivation for playoffs</b></h2><p>Teams looking to make a deep playoffs run sometimes have to make compromises throughout the regular season. Thibodeau does not bend often, though. He brings a whole new meaning to the term iron man. Mikal Bridges fully embraces that label, but even he has limits.</p><p>The good news is that the Knicks have a number of options like Brunson, Hart, Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns to share in the workload. And if Thibodeau does not relent, they can always look to history as motivation.</p><p>The late great head coach Herb Brooks made life hard on the 1980 United States men’s hockey team, but they rallied and went on to pull off one of the biggest upsets in world history at the Winter Olympics. He popped up in headlines a few days ago after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mikal-bridges-pleads-tom-thibodeau-fewer-minutes">speaking with the media about his preference for coach Tom Thibodeau to play the starters a little less</a>. But then Bridges went on to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mikal-bridges-trail-blazers-home-crazy-3-pointer-buzzer">hit a timely game-winning three-pointer</a> against the Portland Trail Blazers. And we are left to make sense of a confusing and relatively successful few days for Bridges and the Knicks.</p><h2><b>Bridges minute complaints precede late game heroics</b></h2><p>As noted above, Bridges appears less-than-thrilled with the sheer number of minutes he’s playing. Bridges has always been a literal iron man, having never missed a game throughout his seven year NBA career. And he’s averaged at least 30 minutes per game in each of the past five seasons.</p><p>However, 2024-25 takes the cake. Bridges is averaging a career-high 37.8 minutes per game this season. In fact, the six-foot-six guard is second in the NBA in minutes per game, trailing only teammate Josh Hart.</p><p>Bridges voiced his displeasure with his heavy work load earlier this week.</p><p>“Sometimes it’s not fun on the body,” Bridges told reporters before the Knicks tipped off against the Trail Blazers.</p><p>Bridges also alluded to the fact that Knicks bench is capable taking on more responsibility.</p><p>“We’ve got a lot of good guys on this team that can take away minutes,” Bridges said. “Which helps the defense, helps the offense, helps tired bodies being out there and giving up all these points. It helps just keeping fresh bodies out there.”</p><p>Regardless how Thibodeau receives Bridges message (<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-tom-thibodeau-shoots-down-mikal-bridges-minutes-report">which seemed lukewarm</a> before reports trickled out about a good meeting between the two), Bridges balled out in the Knicks’ recent win over Portland. He put up 33 points, four assists, four rebounds, one steal, and one block. He shot an uncharacteristic six free throws, converted 62% of all field goal attempts, and sank a game-winning three-pointer as time expired.</p><h2><b>Bridges has played better since Jalen Brunson injury</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mikal-Bridges-passes-the-ball-against-the-LA-Clippers-Ivica-Zubac-in-a-recent-road-win.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Including Bridges’ heroics against Portland, Bridges is averaging 23.3 points and 5,7 assists per game, and he’s shooting a 63/38/93 shooting split across the last three games—all of which are improvements on his season averages. What’s different in the past three games? No Jalen Brunson.</p><p>Let’s be clear, the Knicks are undoubtedly better with Brunson. But Bridges might feel like he has more freedom to look for his shots without the two-time All-Star. And while things will inevitably revert to the pre-Brunson injury ways, maybe Bridges can find a groove while Brunson is out. And that <i>could</i> lead to him feeling more comfortable looking for his shots with Brunson back.</p><h2><b>Bridges’ future with the Knicks</b></h2><p>If Bridges doesn’t find a role with the Knicks soon, that could be a problem. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/grading-blockbuster-mikal-bridges-trade-involving-nets-knicks-rockets">Knicks gave up control of most of their future first-round picks to add Bridges</a> and there is an obvious desire to retain him.</p><p>Bridges is under contract through the end of next season, but entering unrestricted free agency is inadvisable. Thus, the Knicks are probably motivated to reach a deal this offseason. If they don’t, they could look to include Bridges in a deal for another star before the 2026 trade deadline. And while that may not be appealing, it could be a smart move to prevent losing him for nothing.</p><p>Bridges will earn $24.9 million next season, and he reportedly turned down a 2-year/$60 million contract extension last offseason. That makes sense given the type of deal he’s in line to receive. New York could be on the hook for a deal that looks more like 4-year/$156 million, with a starting salary in the neighborhood of $35 million.</p><p>Unfortunately, New York doesn’t know what the salary cap will look like in 2026-27—however, re-signing Bridges will probably put them in jeopardy of exceeding it. New York is already on the hook for $164.5 million in salary for 2026-27, and that’s with only seven players under contract, which does not include Bridges or Mitchell Robinson.</p><p>After re-signing Bridges, the Knicks are likely to be on the hook for $200 million with only eight players signed. They would still have to re-sign or replace Robinson and flesh out the rest of their rotation.</p><p>Without looking too closely at future salary cap challenges, the Knicks need Bridges to figure out where he fits with the team sooner than later. While it may not be instrumental this season, as the Knicks are probably not legitimate championship contenders yet, it is imperative that he understands his role moving forward.</p><p>And if he can find a way to continue to look more like the guy he’s been over the past three games, that would help the Knicks tremendously <a href="https://www.nba.com/knicks/schedule" rel="noopener">in their quest for an NBA championship</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Wednesday evening, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mikal-bridges-trail-blazers-home-crazy-3-pointer-buzzer">New York Knicks picked up a big road win</a> against the Portland Trail Blazers thanks to a game-winning <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-josh-hart-reacts-mikal-bridges-game-winner-minutes-drama">buzzer beater by Mikal Bridges.</a> The win pushed the Knicks’ record to 2-1 since losing Jalen Brunson to a foot injury and allowed them to hold serve in the Eastern Conference standings.</p><p>Recently, Bridges raised eyebrows with his comments about head coach Tom Thibodeau’s demanding usage rate for his starters, which Thibodeau revealed at a recent press conference, per The Athletic.</p><p>One person pushing back <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1772&amp;v=W3MP5cG_jWY&amp;feature=youtu.be" rel="noopener">against that narrative</a> is former point guard Jeff Teague, who played under Thibodeau with the Minnesota Timberwolves.</p><p>“Don’t nobody want to come out of the game, they don’t want to come out of the game. It’s cap, I was talking to PJ Tucker yesterday. People do not want to come out of the game. I used to see him run to the bench and be mad when they subbed him out,” said Teague, per the Club 520 Podcast. “You played 43 minutes.”</p><p>Teague then spoke on his own experiences with the dilemma.</p><p>“Like when I was in my prime, I did not want to come out of the game. I used to be s—ty. Like sit on the bench for 8 minutes straight, and you watch Kyle Lowry play 38 minutes per game. I’m just saying you do not want to come out of the game. It was truly poetic when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-mikal-bridges-trail-blazers-home-crazy-3-pointer-buzzer">Bridges’ game-winning, buzzer-beating 3-pointer</a> secured a Knick win.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-jalen-brunson-suffers-painful-injury-in-ot-vs-lakers">Jalen Brunson being held out by an ankle injury</a>, Bridges is one of several Knicks that the team needs to proverbially step up. All-Star starter Karl-Anthony Towns had a relatively quiet night against the Blazers, but did his part with two 3-pointers in a 40-second span at the end of regulation that helped force overtime.</p><p>After the game, Towns made support for his teammate – and his superb performance – as public as possible. The post was a deft move by Towns, if you want to look perhaps-too-deeply into it, demonstrating support for his teammate without broaching the hot-button topic of minute distribution.</p><h2><b>Mikal Bridges’ aggression could help the Knicks in several ways</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Mikal-Bridges-game-winner-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>Soobum Im-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Thanks to the extra period, Bridges played 41 minutes despite ostensible efforts from Thibodeau to reduce his workload throughout regulation. But the minutes didn’t seem to take any sort of toll on Bridges on Wednesday night.</p><p>He backed up <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/12/sports/why-mikal-bridges-asked-tom-thibodeau-to-play-knicks-starters-less/" rel="noopener">his incendiary pre-game comments</a> with a 33-point, 4-rebound, 4-assist performance. He shot 13-21 from the floor, sinking two of his four tries from downtown. But most notably, Bridges made five of his six free throws. The conversion rate isn’t what matters here. It’s the six attempts that stand out.</p><p>Excluding preseason play, Bridges did not attempt six or more free throws in a game until late December. Wednesday night’s trips to the charity stripe made for his third such game this season. The second came just a week ago in a road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.</p><p>After Wednesday night’s overtime action, Bridges is on pace to attempt 101 total free throws this season. That would be the least he’s attempted over the course of a full season in his career. And that includes the two seasons shortened by COVID-19. The versatile wing’s tendency to pull up for mid-range jumpers instead of initiating contact at the rim <a href="https://x.com/DJAceNBA/status/1808159936939016218" rel="noopener">is, and has been, well documented</a>.</p><p>If Bridges is willing to drive hard to the rim and draw more fouls, it increases the threat of his pull-up jumpers. Predictability is an easy way to get schemed out of games. And perhaps Bridges’ issue with Thibodeau could result in a couple extra minutes of rest each night. Could that be what makes him feel more comfortable exerting himself on drives?</p><p>Bridges continuing to lean into his length and strength around the hoop is key for the Knicks, especially with Brunson sidelined. It was a perfect play for Bridges, as Josh Hart set a screen for him and got Donovan Clingan matched up on him. Head coach Chauncey Billups admitted that he wished things were different with his lineups in that situation.</p><p>“To be honest if I had to do it over I would’ve taken Clingan out…my fault…,” Billups said.</p><p>Despite the loss, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/blazers-news-portland-deni-avdija-career-cavs">Blazers have picked it up</a> over the past few weeks, and their young players are starting to figure it out. It will take a lot for them to climb up and make it into the Play-In tournament, but there have been some good things to take away from the season.</p><p>The hope is that they continue to play well as the stretch of the season gets closer, and they have things to build on for next season. The Knicks’ starting small forward made an eye-opening statement on the strain the starters have been under for most of the season. Bridges, alongside Josh Hart and OG Anunoby, are among the top players in the NBA in minutes. The Knicks are in the middle of a stellar season but will need plenty of energy come the playoffs. Still, New York’s head coach is pedal to the metal no matter the time of the year.</p><p>When asked about Bridges’ comments, Tom Thibodeau gave a stern response. The team is 41-23 and third in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have several players having terrific seasons, like Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Karl-Anthony Towns. For Bridges, who was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-stunning-mikal-bridges-nets-rockets-trade">traded from the Nets</a> this offseason, it’s been an up-and-down season. There have been times where Mikal has looked like an All-NBA caliber player, and there are times when he has looked out of sorts.</p><p>Bridges is the ultimate iron man, having not missed a game in his entire career. Because of that and the Knicks’ lack of wing depth, the starting small forward leads the NBA in total minutes at 2,420. The player in second place in this category is Josh Hart with 2,307. While Tom Thibodeau has been an overachieving head coach throughout his career, there are times when his teams do look tired at the end of the year. The Knicks broke down towards the end of last season as they bowed out in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/indiana-pacers/pacers-news-insane-indiana-stat-highlights-x-factor-knicks-game-7-blowout">second round to the Indiana Pacers</a>.</p><p>There have been times this year when this team’s defensive effort has been lackluster. It’s difficult to consistently have energy on that side of the floor throughout an 82-game season, but it’s also definitely valid to say the number of minutes has affected some of the starters. In addition, giving the bench some minutes is important to ensure this unit is ready to step up when called upon in the postseason and if injuries should arise.</p><p>Nevertheless, as long as the Knicks are healthy and fresh by the beginning of the postseason, fans and players will not question Tom Thibodeau’s minutes strategy. But this team will have high expectations heading into the postseason. However, that hasn’t been for the lack of trying, as Tom Thibodeau is playing his stars as much as he possibly can in order to get every win possible.</p><p>That may not be what some of those stars even want. Ahead of the Knicks’ game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night, Bridges publicly admitted that <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/12/sports/why-mikal-bridges-asked-tom-thibodeau-to-play-knicks-starters-less/" rel="noopener">even he would like a break</a> here and there, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.</p><p>“Sometimes it’s not fun on the body,” Bridges said. “You’ll want that as a coach but also talked to him a little bit knowing that we’ve got a good enough team where our bench guys can come in and we don’t need to play 48 (minutes), 47.”</p><p>Bridges is currently tied for the NBA lead with 37.8 minutes played per game. The only player who plays as much as him? That would be his fellow Knicks teammate Josh Hart. OG Anunoby also ranks in the top 10 in minutes and Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns both play more than 35 minutes a night, so it makes sense that they would want to sit down sometimes.</p><p>Bridges also believes in the guys behind him and thinks that the Knicks’ bench can do an admirable job in relief. That is another reason he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/knicks-news-josh-hart-battled-through-peaks-valleys-injury-tom-thibodeau-new-york-nba-playoffs">wants Thibodeau to rest the starters</a> more, per Bondy.</p><p>“We’ve got a lot of good guys on this team that can take away minutes,” Bridges said. “Which helps the defense, helps the offense, helps tired bodies being out there and giving up all these points. It helps just keeping fresh bodies out there.”</p><p>Bridges and the Knicks have a lot of work to do to be a contender despite their strong record this season. They have been routinely blown out by the best teams in the NBA, namely the Cavs and the Celtics, when they have matched up this season.</p><p>Maybe getting the starters some more rest is the secret sauce to vaulting New York into that top tier. Bridges’ former Villanova and now Knicks teammate Josh Hart <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/01/20/sports/knicks-mikal-bridges-hoping-for-good-energy-in-brooklyn-return/" rel="noopener">said there shouldn’t be any hard feelings</a> from Brooklyn fans.</p><p>“I think they should show him love,” Hart told the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy. “Obviously he was only there for a year-and-half, but he played as hard as he could there. Obviously last year I harassed him on social media. He caught some flak for that. But he was always committed to that franchise and that fan base. Now he’s here and they got a helluva haul for him. He’s averaged 18.1 points and 3.2 assists on 50/35/72 shooting splits while playing a career-high 38.7 minutes per game this season. However, New York hasn’t had the start it hoped for after pushing nearly all its chips in to acquire Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns this summer.</p><p>The Knicks have lost six of their last 10 games and sit third in the Eastern Conference at 28-16. Meanwhile, the Nets have lost eight of their last nine as they aim to maximize their draft lottery odds during the second half of this season.</p><p>“It’s going to be a good game,” Bridges said ahead of Tuesday’s matchup. “Excited.
