Harrell has <a href="https://www.espn.com.au/nbl/story/_/id/41211811/nbl-adelaide-36ers-sign-nba-veteran-montrezl-harrell-olgun-ulug" rel="noopener">agreed to a deal</a> with the Adelaide 36ers of Australia’s NBL, according to ESPN’s Olgun Uluc.</p><p>“Harrell — a 6’7 power forward and 2020 NBA Sixth Man of the Year — will be an injury replacement for Jarell Martin, sources said,” Uluc reported. “Martin is recovered from his patellar tendon injury, but is dealing with a foot complaint that could keep him off the court until November.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-crucial-decision-montrezl-harrell-acl-injury">Harrell missed all of last season with an ACL injury</a>. He played eight seasons in the NBA before that for six different teams, most recently as the backup center for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022-23.</p><p>Harrell’s most successful stint in the NBA came with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played three seasons from 2017-20. In 2019-20, Harrell was awarded the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award as the league’s best bench player. During that season, Harrell averaged 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and was a crucial piece of a Clippers team that reached the second round in the bubble.</p><h2><b>Evaluating Lakers’ big man depth entering 2024-25</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Anthony-Davis.jpg"><figcaption>Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Anthony Davis is obviously the key cog in the Lakers’ big man rotation, and nothing else matters if their star in the middle is injured or unavailable to play. Davis played in 76 games last season, marking a new career high, and had one of the best seasons of his career. “The Brow” landed on Second Team All-NBA after averaging 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game and also landed in fourth place in the Defensive Player of the Year race.</p><p>Behind Davis, the Lakers’ front court is pretty barren. Obviously LeBron James is back and provides elite positional flexibility when he’s out there. James can play power forward in small lineups or he can slide into the backcourt if the Lakers want to go big, which will allow <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-jeanie-buss-cites-jj-redicks-vision-reason-for-hire">new head coach JJ Redick</a> to play around with a lot of different combinations.</p><p>If the Lakers do choose to go big, Rui Hachimura is another big, versatile wing who can space the floor and play defense while providing good positional size.</p><p>The question still remains what the Lakers are going to do when Davis is on the bench or if he has to miss games, and the prospective answers are similar to what they were in years past. Jaxson Hayes is back in the rotation as a hustle player who will work on the glass and hustle on defense, but it remains to be seen if his offensive limitations would hurt the Lakers if he’s forced to play extended minutes.</p><p>Redick and company will also have Christian Wood back at some point when he recovers from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-christian-wood-undergoes-knee-surgery-before-training-camp">his recent knee surgery</a>. Wood can provide spacing off the bench and a much-needed scoring punch, but his defensive concerns have minimized his role in recent years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In fact, Charania also notes that the “76ers will continue supporting Harrell in his rehab and recovery plan, sources said.”</p><p>Montrezl Harrell is an eight-year NBA vet who has played for six NBA teams — the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets, and Sixers — after the Rockets selected him in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft out of Louisville.</p><p>Over the course of his career, Harrell, an undersized center at 6-foot-7, has averaged 20.5 minutes, 12.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. His biggest contributions don’t show up on a stat sheet, though. The North Carolina native has brought an incredible amount of toughness, effort, and defensive skill to every team he’s been on.</p><p>Harrell signed a one-plus-one deal to get on the Sixers’ roster last offseason, opted out this offseason, and re-signed on another one-year deal. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-montrezl-harrell-acl-meniscus-injury-update" rel="noopener">news of the ACL injury</a> came earlier this month after he had an MRI after suffering swelling in his right knee following a workout.</p><p>The news, of course, was about as bad as it could be in this situation, with ACL injuries typically requiring close to a year, if not more, of rehabilitation before a player is able to return to the NBA court. Jamal Murray, for example, tore his ACL in April of 2021. He missed the rest of that season and the entirety of the next, not returning until the beginning of last season 18 months after the injury. Of course, that return turned out pretty well for Murray as his Denver Nuggets went on to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-nikola-jokic-denver-wins-first-championship-game-5-demolition-heat" rel="noopener">win the championship</a>, but the layoff prior to that was a significant one.</p><p>In his first season with the Philadelphia 76ers, Harrell averaged just 11.9 minutes for 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in his 57 games last season, but with reigning MVP Joel Embiid the starting five he was never going to be given the kind of minutes he’d received on previous teams. With him absent, expect Paul Reed – who showed some signs of promise last season – to take on the role as the primary back-up to the Sixers’ superstar center.</p><p>As for Harrell, at 29 years of age he still has plenty of time to recover from this injury and make an impact on the NBA in the future, particularly <a href="https://twitter.com/JGrasso_/status/1694449857639956807" rel="noopener">with surgery having</a> gone well. Though there is no timeline at this point on his return, it’s unlikely he’ll play during the 2023-24 season and if he does it would only be very much at the business end. He’ll still be just 30 years of age at the beginning of the 2024-25 season, so while this is a significant blow, it hopefully won’t be a career-ending one.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

A native of Fort Hood, TX, Albertie currently lives in Atlanta, GA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Despite undergoing an MRI on Wednesday that revealed a torn ACL and a medial meniscus tear in his right knee, the Philadelphia 76ers <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-montrezl-harrell-knee-injury-20230803.html" rel="noopener">plan on keeping</a> veteran big man <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-montrezl-harrell-acl-meniscus-injury-update" rel="noopener">Montrezl Harrell on the roster</a>, per Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Harrell, who sustained the injury during an offseason training session, re-signed with the Sixers on a one-year, $2.9 million minimum contract in July.</p><p>With both Paul Reed and Mo Bamba also playing behind Sixers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-joel-embiid-grant-hill-usa-basketball" rel="noopener">star center Joel Embiid</a>, the role that the 29-year-old Harrell would have had with Philadelphia moving forward was up in the air ahead of training camp. Harrell is more accomplished than either Reed or Bamba, and his strong-willed approach is appreciated. However, just two seasons after winning Sixth Man of the Year, the Sixers saw Harrell averaging near career-lows across the board.</p><p>This was presumably due to interior scoring taking a hit, but him playing behind a player of Embiid’s caliber — and during an MVP season no less — rather than Ivica Zubac (Los Angeles Clippers) like had a bit to do with it as well. Furthermore, as Harrell had already faced a fair number of critiques for his defense, its more than understandable why he played a minimal role las season.</p><p>That said, there was still solid evidence of the positive impact Harrell can provide when healthy. In seven starts last season, Harrell averaged 13.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game on 61.1 percent shooting from the field.</p><p>There aren’t many reserve centers that can put up those numbers, which is exactly the Sixers would be wise to keep him around. Especially as keeping him on the roster could allow them to both apply for a Disabled Players Exception down the line and monitor his injury rehab in case they can see themselves re-signing him in 2024.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Unfortunately, Harrell is unlikely to play in any games this upcoming year after he received some bad injury news on Wednesday.</p><p>According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, an MRI done on Harrell’s right knee <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1686833505915822080?s=20" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> that the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year has suffered a torn ACL and meniscus. The injury and swelling in his knee occurred during his offseason workouts. As of now, the team has yet to put a timeframe on his recovery.</p><p>Harrell played in a total of 57 games for the Sixers last season, averaging 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting 59.8 percent from the floor. In his second season with the team, Harrell was expected to share backup duties behind league MVP Joel Embiid with Paul Reed and Mo Bamba, both of which agreed to new contracts with Philadelphia this offseason.</p><p>Initially signing a two-year contract with the 76ers last offseason, Harrell elected to decline his $2.7 million player option for the upcoming season, entering free agency as an unrestricted free agent.</p><p>This is yet another setback the Sixers have to deal with as an organization this offseason, as ongoing trade discussions with former league MVP James Harden have dominated headlines. Harden remains on Philly’s roster at this time and there does not appear to be any trade in place involving the 10-time All-Star despite his request to play elsewhere.</p><p>The Sixers are coming off of a 54-28 season, their best record since they won 56 games during the 2000-01 season. However, they have lost in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in five of the last six seasons, failing to advance to the conference finals since they did so during that same 2000-01 season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
