But now that he’s healthy, he appears to be back with a vengeance.</p><p>During the Pacers’ preseason contest against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, it was Mathurin who stole the show in a 129-117 win for Indiana. In just 19 minutes of play, Mathurin filled up the box score, finishing with 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field (5-of-8 from three) and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.</p><p>The Cavs’ defense had no answer for Mathurin as he got to his spots at will in what was an electric performance from the third-year guard out of Arizona.</p><p>Mathurin is certainly making fans remember what he’s capable of, and his Pacers teammate Myles Turner couldn’t help but <a href="https://x.com/Original_Turner/status/1844567968597864911" rel="noopener">hype up the impending return</a> of the 22-year-old guard.</p><p>“League Ain’t Ready ♨️,” Turner wrote on his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.</p><p>The 2023-24 season, in some ways, was an improvement for Mathurin. He was more efficient when it came to scoring from the field, although he did lose some of his scoring value as he got to the foul line less often than he did in his rookie campaign. But perhaps Year 3 will finally be the Pacers guard’s true breakout season.</p><p>The Pacers, after all, traded away Buddy Hield last season as they looked to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-rick-carlisle-sounds-off-buddy-hield-trade-impact-on-bennedict-mathurin">open up more minutes for Mathurin</a>. It was unfortunate that Mathurin sustained a season-ending injury that prevented him from seizing that opportunity with open arms, but at the very least, he can now show that a delay does not necessarily mean a denial.</p><h2><b>Can Bennedict Mathurin stand out in a crowded Pacers backcourt?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Bennedict-Mathurin-layup.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While Bennedict Mathurin was on the mend following surgery to repair his injured shoulder, the Pacers stumbled upon a winning formula. They started Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith on the wing.</p><p>Nembhard, in particular, showed some incredible defensive workrate as well as an ability to create and make difficult shots off the dribble that kept the Pacers’ offense alive even as Tyrese Haliburton suffered a season-ending injury during their ECF clash against the Boston Celtics.</p><p>From the looks of everything, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/predicting-pacers-record-2024-25-season-schedule-release">Pacers will be rolling</a> with the same starting lineup that they had in the playoffs, which means that Mathurin will have to come off the bench, at least to start the upcoming season. He is also doing his part to make sure that he’s one of the first names head coach Rick Carlisle calls upon whenever the starters need rest.</p><p>Mathurin appears to be a better fit off the bench anyway. Haliburton and Pascal Siakam command their fair share of touches, which may relegate Mathurin to more of a spectator role on offense.</p><p>Mathurin is at his best when he can create offense for himself, and playing a featured role off the bench may be the Pacers’ key to getting the best out of him. But at the end of the day, he’s only 22 years of age, making it likely that he takes a leap in his third professional season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Turner, for what feels like his entire career, has been at the forefront of trade rumors aplenty, but he appears to be off the market for now with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/indiana-pacers-bold-predictions-2024-25-season-schedule-release">Pacers having blossomed</a> into one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>Starting centers who can space the floor and protect the rim are worth their weight in gold, and Turner no longer has the pressure on him to be anything more than that now that Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam have taken the reigns for the Pacers on offense. But his lengthy stay on the trade block has left such a mark on him that <a href="https://hoopshype.com/rumor/3195922/" rel="noopener">he still doesn’t feel</a> like he has a long-term future in Indiana.</p><p>“I can’t help but laugh. I’m gonna keep it a stack. Every year at Indiana has been a contract year at this point, whether you’re fighting rumors or staying true to your grind and what not. I don’t really feel too much different,” Turner said, per Indystar (subscription required) via HoopsHype.</p><p>Turner is in the middle of another <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/17839/myles-turner" rel="noopener">literal contract year</a>, so once again, there is pressure for him to play his role for the Pacers to a T. Regardless, he has become less expendable now that the Pacers are winning again, and it makes total sense for Indiana to come to terms to an extension with him sooner than later.</p><p>Still only 28 years old, Turner should have plenty of productive years in front of him. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-myles-turner-first-take-skepticism-rick-carlisle">The Pacers don’t exactly have</a> a ready-made replacement for him in the event of a trade or a departure from him in free agency, so expect Indiana to lock Turner up to a long-term contract extension within the upcoming season.</p><h2><b>Myles Turner is a crucial member of the Pacers’ pace-and-space roster</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Pacers-center-Myles-Turner-33-celebrates-a-made-basket.jpg"></figure><p>Myles Turner has never been a typical big man for the Pacers. He’s not quite adept at holding his own at the boards, while he’s not the most physical big man when it comes to scoring in the post. But he opens up a five-out offense for the Pacers; as one would recall, Indiana was running on a historically-great offensive pace to begin the 2023-24 season, with Turner playing a huge part in that.</p><p>The Pacers’ playoff starting lineup (Turner, Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, and Aaron Nesmith) had an impressive net rating of <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/lineups/advanced?slug=advanced&amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;TeamID=1610612754" rel="noopener">+14.1 in 288 minutes</a> played against tough teams such as the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Milwaukee Bucks. That five-man combination has the right blend of playmaking, tough-shot making off the bounce, as well as speed, allowing them to go out and play at a breakneck pace to spread the opposition thin.</p><p>Behind Turner, the Pacers do have some solid center depth, but it’s not as if they can replicate what the 28-year-old brings to the table. Isaiah Jackson is more in the mold of a traditional rim-running center, and he provides no floor-spacing value whatsoever. Obi Toppin can run some small-ball five, but he’s not the rim protector Turner is. James Wiseman is a versatile scoring option at the five, but his all-around defense is suspect.</p><p>Simply put, Turner’s importance to the team cannot be matched by his competitors for minutes, which should make his place on the Pacers roster safe — at least for now.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It seemed like Brown was perfectly content with that fact during his press conference.</p><p>“[Myles] feel like, he’s at home, he got his family watching and stuff, his girl was probably watching, so he had to do something,” Brown said. “But Myles is a good kid, and I’ve known Myles for a long time, we’re good friends. So, it’s all love.”</p><p>Although he was dubbed a “good kid” by Brown, Turner is actually seven months older. Age aside, Brown was able to make winning plays down the stretch while Turner had zero fourth-quarter points.</p><p>“I think I’m one of the best two-way wings, guards, whatever you want to say, in this game,” Brown declared. “I don’t care who sees what, as long as my team knows my value, my city knows my value, my family. That’s all I really care about. But I like to set my hat on just being a versatile two-way wing and can do both at any point in time, and the last kind of four minutes of this game, you saw that.”</p><p>In the last three minutes of Game 4, Brown notched one game-tying basket, one steal, one block, and one game-winning assist to White. And yet, Myles Turner and company are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-brian-windhorst-harsh-truth-bomb-pacers-playoff-run">still standing against all odds</a>. They were widely predicted to lose to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round but they managed to send Doc Rivers’ squad home. Granted that the Bucks dealt with major injuries, the Pacers still can be credited for making sure they took full advantage of such circumstances.</p><p>It was the same case in the second round versus the New York Knicks. After going down 2-0 in the early goings of the Knicks series, Indiana fought back to tie it all up at 2-2. New York won Game 5 to move a win away from eliminating the Pacers, who then won the next two games to keep their title hopes alive while showing the banged-up Knicks the door.</p><p>And once again, the Pacers will be the underdogs in the next round versus the best team in the NBA based on regular-season record, the Boston Celtics.</p><h2><b>Myles Turner, Pacers embracing underdog label</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Pacers-center-Myles-Turner-33-celebrates-a-made-basket.jpg"><figcaption>© Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>For Turner, <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/myles-turner-pacers-trade-talks-tyrese-haliburton-pascal-siakam-free-agency-rick-carlisle/" rel="noopener">being the underdog isn’t new</a> for the Pacers. Having played his entire NBA career so far with Indiana, Turner is a credible resource about what it’s like to play for a team that doesn’t always enjoy the attention and the shine of bigger market teams and traditional powerhouses.</p><p>“That’s life as an Indiana Pacer. It was the same thing as the last series. If you look at every single poll on ESPN, everyone picked the Knicks to win. If you look at the series before that with the Bucks, it might’ve been 80 percent of the people picking Milwaukee to win,” Turner said in a recent appearance on the HoopsHype podcast.</p><p>Turner seems fine with everyone thinking the Pacers are the underdogs, and he’d rather have his team use that label as bulletin board material.</p><p>“That’s something that, since I’ve been here, at least in my career, it’s been like that every single season. We don’t get TV games, and we’re not publicized like that. In the press, it’s never the Pacers won. It’s the Knicks lost. That’s regular stuff for us. We use it as fuel and as a chip on our shoulders. We definitely go in there, and it’s less pressure on us because if we’re the underdogs, we’re the uninvited guests. It’s up to us to go out there and prove everybody wrong. That’s the goal at the end of the day.”</p><p>Turner was the Pacers’ first-round pick (11th overall) in the 2015 NBA Draft. In each of his first five seasons in the NBA, Indiana made the playoffs. However, none of those trips to the postseason went beyond the first round. The Pacers then missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons before being good enough to be a playoff team again in the 2023-24 campaign. It has been a decade since fans last saw the Pacers go this deep in a season.</p><p>Beating the Celtics is a tall order for the Pacers but not an impossible task.</p><p>In five meetings this season with Boston, the Pacers took two victories.</p><p>Can they shock Boston <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-hoping-reverse-bonkers-eastern-conference-finals-trend">in the Eastern Conference finals</a>?</p><p>After surviving two tough rounds in the playoffs, Turner and the Pacers have no reason not to believe that they could pull off a stunner.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After defeating the New York Knicks in Game 7 in their tough second-round series, the Pacers have seemingly exceeded all expectations in their first playoff appearance since 2020. But while there was always potential with the team’s roster, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-donte-divincenzo-pacers-myles-turner-fake-tough-guy-label-game-5">Pacers big man Myles Turner</a> said he had reservations <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-rick-carlisles-ref-rant-earns-fine-josh-hart-disrespectful-retort">about Rick Carlisle’s</a> return as head coach.</p><p>Before his latest stint with the Pacers, Carlisle had a more than decade-long tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he won the 2011 NBA Championship. Turner, as a Texas native, got to see Carlisle and his teams firsthand, but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing.</p><p>“I’ve got a lot of love for Rick,” Turner <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/myles-turner-surviving-pacers-trade-talks-tyrese-haliburton/id1249189650?i=1000656209494">said on</a> The HoopsHype Podcast with Michael Scotto. “Whenever Rick first got here, I didn’t know what to think because I grew up watching the Mavericks’ championship run, and I just was, obviously, familiar with who he was basketball-wise, but from things I heard from the outside it was, ‘Oh yeah he loves his basketball, but he’s kind of a weird guy,’ or ‘He’s really good at X’s and O’s, but he’s kind of a weird guy,’ and this and that.</p><p>“When I finally got to meet Rick one-on-one, I was like ‘Oh bro, he’s just like me.’ Weird isn’t the word to describe Rick. He just has a very straight-to-the-point type of personality. He doesn’t really bulls—t around. We’re going to get right to the point of what we’re talking about.</p><p>Turner, who has an extensive Lego collection, also expressed his appreciation for Carlisle’s passions in life.</p><p>“He’s someone who, obviously, has a phenomenal basketball mind, but as a person, he’s so well versed,” Turner said. “This dude, he flies planes, he’s a hell of a pianist, he’s someone who is in the gym literally every single day, like in the weight room with us every single day working out. I’ve got a lot of respect for who he is as a person.”</p><h2>Rick Carlisle, Pacers heading back to Eastern Conference Finals</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Rick-Carlisle-Pacers-on-the-sidelines.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Rick Carlisle, a former NBA player who an NBA Championship with the Boston Celtics in 1986, got his start in coaching with the New Jersey Nets in 1989. Nearly a decade into his coaching career, Carlisle found his way to the Indiana Pacers, with whom he served as an assistant under Larry Bird for three seasons. When Bird resigned as coach, he suggested Indiana hire his former Celtics teammate.</p><p>The Pacers passed on Carlisle then to hire Isiah Thomas, but after Thomas was fired in 2003 by Bird, who had returned and taken over as the team’s president, Carlisle also returned to Indiana to become the Pacers’ head coach. Carlisle brought with him some head coaching experience; after being passed over for the Pacers’ job, Carlisle was hired as the Detroit Pistons’ head coach. He led the Pistons to the playoffs in both of his seasons leading the team, including an Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 2003.</p><p>Carlisle found success with the Pacers, reaching the conference finals in his first season as head coach. His second season was largely derailed, though, by the ‘Malice at the Palace’ involving the Pacers and Pistons, the two teams Carlisle had coached to that point. The Pacers slipped in his Carlisle’s final two seasons during his first stint, leading to Carlisle’s dismissal in 2007.</p><p>In 2008, Carlisle returned to the sidelines, taking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-jalen-brunson-rick-carlisle-mavs-drama-resurfaces-pacers-series">over the Dallas Mavericks</a>. The success was immediate; the Mavericks won 50 games in 2008-09, 55 in 2009-10, and 57 in 2010-11, the latter of which proved to be a magical season in which Carlisle won his first NBA Championship as a coach. After their greatest triumph in 2011, Carlisle’s teams would fail to win another playoff series during his tenure before being fired in 2021.</p><p>Fourteen years after being fired by Bird, Carlisle returned to the Pacers, who had fired Nate Bjorkgren after a single season. Tasked with leading Indiana through a rebuild, Carlisle oversaw a 25-57 first season back with the Pacers, his second-worst season in his head coaching career. The Pacers improved by 10 wins in year two under Carlisle as Tyrese Haliburton was named to his first NBA All-Star Game, but the jump this season was even greater.</p><p>In the third season under Carlisle, the Pacers, with one of the best offenses in NBA history, won 47 games, the most for the franchise since 2018-19. Indiana won its first-round playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, marking the first time in a decade that the Pacers had won a playoff series. It was also the first series win for Carlisle since 2011.</p><p>The Pacers then overcame a fatigued and injury-ravaged New York Knicks team in the second round, defeating their depleted opponents on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-tyrese-haliburtons-instant-reaction-to-indianas-wild-game-7-win-vs-knicks">road in Game 7</a> to secure their first ECF appearance since 2014.</p><p>Reaching the NBA Finals, which the Pacers have not done since their lone appearance in 2000, will not be easy for Indiana. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-pacers-will-stun-world-with-eastern-conference-finals-upset-of-celtics">Boston Celtics, Carlisle’s former team</a> and the juggernaut who sported the best record in the NBA and thus the top seed in the Eastern Conference, decisively defeated both the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers en route to yet another ECF berth.</p><p>Game 1 of the Pacers vs. Celtics series is set for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff tonight.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
