A Nets fan, James yearns for the days of yesteryear, when playoffs were all but irrelevant and the likes of Caris Levert and Jarrett Allen were running the show.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Nick Richards has signed <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn" rel="noopener">a new deal</a> with the Charlotte Hornets worth $15 million over five years, according to his agent Javon Phillips and Jared Mucha of Excel Basketball.</p><p>The Hornets big man, who was drafted out of Kentucky with the 42 overall pick in the 2020 draft, had a slow start to his career in the big time. In recent weeks, however, he has begun to show signs that his 7’0” frame (and 7’4” wingspan, no less) is more than capable of adding value to an NBA team.</p><p>Richards played just 68 games over his first two years in the league, averaging only 3.5 minutes per game in his first year and 7.3 minutes in his second. This year, however, those numbers have received a big boost, and with it his overall production for the Hornets.</p><p>He’s still not exactly a household name and has come off the bench for much of the season to date. Richards has been a reliable back-up center to Mark Williams, averaging a little under eight points and six boards a night in around 18 minutes. With Williams sidelined through injury, however, Richards has moved into the starting line-up, and in just five games has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-kai-jones-nick-richards-receive-high-praise-from-pj-washington" rel="noopener">already shown his value</a>.</p><p>In his most recent outing against the Indiana Pacers, Richards scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds (six offensive), while a couple of games earlier he put together a 15-12-4 statline against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s also been terrific on the defensive end in that time period, swatting 2.4 shots per game – including five against the Utah Jazz.</p><p>In just his third year in the league, Nick Richards remains limited in some ways. A disastrous outing against Joel Embiid showed he’s a long way off matching it with the best. In fairness, he’s not the first nor will he be the last to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wrapped-up-sixers-star-joel-embiids-mvp-candidacy-gets-major-endorsement-from-zach-lavine" rel="noopener">dominated by Embiid</a>. A $15 million contract might come as a surprise to many, but Richards has come on in leaps and bounds at both ends of the floor this season, and an extended deal is a just reward.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The win was out of reach most of the game, but the Hornets managed to pull it to within 10 a few different points in the second half. Despite the loss, some positive strides were made. The young big men for Charlotte got to see the floor more and flourish with a few more minutes of playing time. With Mark Williams being out with a sprained right thumb, Nick Richards and Kai Jones played more than usual.</p><p>Richards <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/uta-vs-cha-0022201005/box-score#box-score" rel="noopener">finished</a> with nine points, eight rebounds and five blocks in 30 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Jones put up six points, five boards and three blocks in 17 minutes. They may not seem like eye-popping stats, but playing time for any young player is huge–especially for big men who normally take longer to develop than guards or wing players.</p><p>PJ Washington took note of his centers’ performances and gave them props after the game.</p><p>“They’’e doing great. I’m proud of both of them. Kai’s been playing great and giving good minutes – rebounding at a high level, blocking shots, just being athletic and doing what he does best. Same with Nick. I’m proud of both of them, and we’ll need them both down the stretch,” Washington noted.</p><p>The two bigs combined for eight of the Hornets’ 14 blocks against the Jazz. Unfortunately, Utah still managed to put up 66 points in the paint and had 20 offensive rebounds. The next step in their development would be sealing off other bigs to secure rebounds to end opposing possessions. It’s a work in progress, but definitely a step in the right direction.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Wizards have been one of the biggest early season surprises in the NBA.</p><p>Entering play Wednesday, they sit atop the Eastern Conference at 10-3. They have been doing it mostly on the defensive end. Washington is among the league leaders in points allowed. Meanwhile, the Hornets have been a bit of a surprise themselves. They entered the game 8-7 and lead the East in scoring at over 113 points per game.</p><p>In their most recent victory, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-kyle-kuzma-fired-up-with-three-word-reaction-after-escaping-pelicans/" rel="noopener">Wizards erased a 19 point deficit to beat the New Orleans Pelicans</a>. During the 2nd half of that game, Washington turned it on defensively. Gafford dominated in the paint, recording three blocks. Gafford is not much of a threat offensively, but is turning into one of the better rim protectors in the league in only his third season.</p><p>Following the game in Charlotte Wednesday, the Wizards head to Miami for a home and home.
