Nicolas Batum, one of the most respected voices in French basketball, <a href="https://x.com/nicolas88batum/status/1961924285380923850" rel="noopener">quickly came to his defense</a> and called out fans for crossing a line that has no place in sports.</p><p>The controversy erupted in the final seconds when Francisco, after shaking Luka Doncic’s hand, drove to the rim for an uncontested layup that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/eurobasket-news-slovenia-france-game-ends-in-bizarre-manner">extended France’s margin of victory</a> from nine to 11 points. Because point differential matters in EuroBasket, the play had strategic value. However, many Slovenian fans viewed it as disrespectful and flooded social media with vitriol, including racial slurs.</p><p>“Some of y’all are sick even if you disagree with a basketball play,” Batum wrote on X. “Racism and hate are never acceptable at all. After Dennis Schroder earlier, now this. Major props to Sylvain, great game, brother. Keep shining and making us proud.”</p><p>The French Basketball Federation also issued a statement condemning what it described as “intolerable” behavior that goes against the values of the sport. But Batum’s comments underscored a growing frustration among players who feel these situations are not being dealt with strongly enough.</p><p>EuroBasket has long been known for its passionate crowds and heated rivalries. However, the tournament’s spirit of competition has been marred by recurring acts of racism. With group play intensifying, players and federations alike are urging governing bodies to act swiftly and ensure offenders face consequences.</p><p>Francisco, who scored 32 points against Slovenia, said he regrets the misunderstanding with Doncic. But he will not stay silent about the racial abuse that followed. For Batum and the French federation, the message remains clear. Criticism of a basketball decision is fair game. Deal includes a team option as well as a trade kicker. Batum’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye of Comsport, negotiated the contract for the reunion,” Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>A few days ago, Batum declined his $4.9 million player option for next season to become a free agent, but there was mutual interest between him and the Clippers for him to return. They were able to get that deal done, and with Batum approaching his 18th season in the league, he says there’s a good chance that he will retire after next season.</p><p>Last season for the Clippers, Batum played in 78 games and started in eight of them, averaging 4.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He’s been a solid 3-and-D player in this part of his career, and he proved that last season with the Clippers.</p><p>Batum really showed his value against the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, and he was a big reason why they were able to get the Clippers to seven games. He shot 40% from the 3-point line during the playoffs, while also averaging 1.7 blocks and 0.9 steals per game.</p><p>This is one of the first moves that the Clippers have made this offseason. Their next line of business will be re-signing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/clippers-news-james-harden-decides-36-3m-option-2025-26-season">James Harden, as he recently declined his option</a>. Harden will re-sign with the Clippers, and it’s supposed to be for two years, $81.5 million. The Clippers should be another team to watch out for once again in the Western Conference next season, but health will always be a key area for them, and the hope is that Kawhi Leonard can stay injury-free throughout the year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The 36-year-old has played 17 years in the NBA and has become a reliable role player toward the tail end of his career. Batum has enjoyed two stints with the Clippers, including this most recent one, where he was given super difficult defensive assignments even at his age. Several times, the veteran Frenchman was matched up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-clippers/clippers-news-president-lawrence-frank-gets-brutally-honest-on-game-7-loss-vs-nuggets">against Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic</a> during the seven-game series with the 2023 NBA champs.</p><p>This series was an absolute thriller that is probably still eating at the Clippers, considering how close they were to advancing to the second round. Despite that disappointment, 2024-25 was a successful season for a franchise that was expected to take a considerable dip due to not resigning Paul George. Los Angeles, however, won 50 games for the second straight year. In a recent interview with BeinSports, Batum <a href="https://www.eurohoops.net/en/nba-news/1826747/nicolas-batum-very-likely-to-retire-at-end-of-next-season/" rel="noopener">was honest</a> about his retirement plans.</p><p>“There’s a very, very good chance that the next season will be my last.”</p><p>Batum is currently on a two-year deal that will end after next season. The savvy veteran was playing over 20 minutes a game for the Clippers and is still a critical wing on this roster. Los Angeles lacks some depth in this area, especially with the uncertain health of Kawhi Leonard throughout his tenure. Batum’s return will therefore pay dividends. The franchise will have some critical decisions this offseason as it looks to take that good-to-great jump. James Harden has a player option that he could exercise next season, but he could be potentially looking for a long-term deal.</p><p>Norman Powell is also extension-eligible, coming off a season where he could’ve been named an All-Star. Los Angeles has two very valuable starters in their prime, Powell and Ivica Zubac, who form a formidable core with Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. The question is whether the Clippers will look to use one of these players in a potential star trade. Los Angeles <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44588112/nba-offseason-2025-draft-free-agency-trade-targets-30-teams" rel="noopener">can trade up</a> to two firsts from 2030 and 2032 and swap their picks in 2030, 2031, or 2032. Unfortunately, they fell short of their ultimate goal with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lebron-james-olympics-mvp-win-splits-team-usa-fans">a 98-87 loss to LeBron James</a>, Stephen Curry, and the United States.</p><p>Wembanyama led the way for France, recording a game-high 26 points and earning All-Olympics Team honors after the game. Batum was quiet offensively, finishing with five points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He had the task of defending some of Team USA’s best like Curry and Kevin Durant, which ultimately proved to be a tall task.</p><h2><b>Nicolas Batum done internationally</b></h2><p>For years now, Batum had been hinting that this Olympics run would be his last. On Saturday night, he confirmed that the Paris Olympics was his last time suiting up with France.</p><p>“It was my last one with this jersey,” Batum said after the loss. “I spent 15 years playing four World Cups, four EuroBaskets, and four Olympics. I did what I had to do: Seven medals. I’m happy.”</p><p>Nicolas Batum, who will turn 36 years old in December, will finish his international career with seven total medals to his name:</p><p>• 2024 Paris Olympics; Silver<br>• 2020 Tokyo Olympics; Silver<br>• 2019 FIBA World Cup; Bronze<br>• 2015 EuroBasket; Bronze<br>• 2014 FIBA World Cup; Bronze<br>• 2013 EuroBasket; Gold<br>• 2011 EuroBasket; Silver</p><p>French guard Nando de Colo, 37 years of age, also <a href="https://www.eurohoops.net/en/olympic-games/1706158/batum-and-de-colo-say-goodbye-to-the-french-national-team/" rel="noopener">announced that this would be his final run</a> as well.</p><p>“I tried to do my best, but it’s the team that counts,” de Colo said via Eurohoops. “Everyone did their part of the work during this adventure. I’ve had some good groups, but one like the one this summer, I don’t know. It’s great to have finished with that one.”</p><h2><b>Batum thanks France</b></h2><p>Despite falling short in the gold medal game for the second straight Olympics, Batum is holding his head up high as he’s now part of two of the four medals France has won in Olympic Men’s Basketball.</p><p>“It was planned that it was my last game with this jersey, so to finish in this place, this situation, this match, with this team in this competition, it’s special,” Nicolas Batum <a href="https://twitter.com/Hannnas" rel="noopener">said in French</a>, as translated by French media member Hanna of MVIP. “It’s hard to describe with the heat of the moment but I am happy and a bit sad at the same time. It’s still 15 years of summers that I sacrificed, crazy moments that I was able to live, memories of ups and downs. We play for France and it was an honor, and it was amazing. To finish on a loss is unfortunate, but in that game in particular, I couldn’t have dreamt for a better conclusion with the French National Team.</p><p>“After 15 years in this team, it’s time for me to leave my spot to the younger generation.”</p><p>Batum and France finished higher than likely anyone expected in these Olympics. Following a 2023 FIBA World Cup in which they failed to medal and finished fifth, Batum said he was concerned about returning home.</p><p>“I’ve never been ashamed with this jersey but this is the first time I’m ashamed,” Nicolas Batum said in August 2023 following the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/fiba-world-cup-news-nicolas-batums-reaction-frances-failure-final-tournament">embarrassing FIBA World Cup result</a>. “I’m scared to go home because we let a lot of people down. A lot of people believed in us to do something special. They then followed that up with a win against the 2023 FIBA World Cup Champions in Germany to advance to the Gold Medal game.</p><p>By doing so, France became just the first host country since 1996 to secure a medal in Men’s five-on-five basketball. They’re also the third country to ever do so along with the USA and the Soviet Union.</p><p>France head coach Vincent Collet was brutally honest postgame, saying he fully believed his French team had what it took to defeat Team USA in the Gold Medal match.</p><p>“To be honest, today I was expecting more,” Collet said. “The game has shown me that we could do more, but you have to do the perfect gun, and we didn’t do it. That’s all, but I really think with a little bit more, we could really push them much more. We did it, we were not too far, but I’m sure we could do better. But it’s like that, we had the chance, we didn’t take it, so that’s a first, we must think about it next time.”</p><p>France turned the ball over 13 times, shot just 9-of-30 from three, and made only 10 of their 17 free throws. He was expected to retire entirely following the 2024 Olympics but found new life in the very unexpected James Harden trade with the Philadelphia 76ers.</p><p>In 1,053 appearances in the NBA, Nicolas Batum has averaged 10.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 0.9 steals per game on 43.7 percent shooting from the field and 36.6 percent from three.</p><p>Batum is one of nine players in NBA history with at least 10,000 points, 1,500 three-pointers, 900 steals, and 600 blocks in his NBA career.. The other eight players are LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, James Harden, and Vince Carter.
