They’ve gone to the NBA Finals twice, the Eastern Conference Finals three times, and the Heat haven’t had more than 44 wins in three of the last four seasons.</p><p>From top to bottom, this Heat organization has sustained continued success, but losing in the Finals this past season has led them to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-major-roster-questions-with-without-damian-lillard-trade" rel="noopener">pursuit of Damian Lillard</a>, the Portland Trail Blazers All-Star. Miami wants Dame, and he wants to go to Miami, yet trade discussions have died down slightly since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-real-reason-damian-lillards-trade-request" rel="noopener">Lillard first requested a trade</a> to the Heat in July.</p><p>Tyler Herro and veteran Kyle Lowry have both heard their names come up in trade rumors pertaining to the All-NBA guard, as has recent first-round pick Nikola Jovic. Drafted 27th overall by the Heat in 2022, Jovic is a very young prospect the team has been spending a lot of time developing. Miami is hopeful that he can turn into a key contributor for them at the forward positions in due time, but they may not see this project through should the Trail Blazers want him in a trade for Lillard.</p><p>Recently asked about the trade rumors surrounding the Heat and Blazers, Jovic gave his stance on the matter, making it clear that he <a href="https://twitter.com/Tsaltas46/status/1689628134985879552?s=20" rel="noopener">wants to remain</a> in Miami.</p><p>“It’s basketball. Of course I’d love to be in Miami, those guys are great, and they helped me a lot,” Jovic stated, via Christos Tsaltas. “I would really love to stay with them and compete in basketball and as a person because they are unbelievable. What happens, happens. I hope I stay there. That’s all.”</p><p>While there is still no traction on a potential deal, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that the Heat have been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-heat-trade-package-blazers-damian-lillard" rel="noopener">prepared to offer the Blazers</a> a trade package involving Herro, expiring contracts, a young player, such as Jovic, along with draft compensation.</p><p>Still just 20 years old, Jovic has plenty of room to grow and could turn into a key contributing factor one day given his length and ability to play out on the perimeter. His best game this past year came on Nov. 18 against the Washington Wizards, as the rookie recorded 18 points and six rebounds in 30 total minutes of play during Miami’s overtime loss.</p><p>Should the Heat actually pull off a trade for Lillard, it is unlikely that Jovic will remain in South Beach, as he presents value being a recent first-round pick.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The 27th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Jovic’s rookie season saw him display flashes of the talent that made him a first-round selection, but he didn’t have the strength, consistency, or awareness to do much more than that.</p><p>In the end, Jovic averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game as a rookie, shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 22.9 percent from 3.</p><p>A three-day stretch with matchups against the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors saw him averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game on 44.4 percent shooting from the field, 33.3 percent from 3 and 92.9 percent from the free-throw line (on 7.0 attempts per game). Furthermore, Jovic averaged 12.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.9 blocks per game on 46.7 percent from the field and 34.5 percent shooting from 3 in the NBA G League (7 games).</p><p>Consequently, Jovic averaging 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game (on 40.0 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from 3) in the 2023 NBA Summer League tracks logically. As does Jovic averaging 21.5 points per game <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Nikola-Jovic/Summary/148861" rel="noopener">in the California Classic</a> before struggling in the Las Vegas Summer League with 8.5 points per game.</p><h1>Heat’s biggest Nikola Jovic concern after Summer League</h1><p>Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic is undoubtedly a talented player.</p><p>However, he has the same issue as many young and versatile players who find themselves capable of all but everything on the court. Whether it’s on offense or defense, as a shot-maker or on-ball defender, Jovic has been unable to consistently perform at a high level.</p><p>Jovic did well to add 10-15 pounds of muscle over the offseason as he appears more capable of absorbing contact on both ends of the court. As everyone has a natural body frame, asking the 20-year-old to bulk up even more might be all but impossible. Yet, in order for Jovic to be more of a consistent force on his way to and around the rim, that may be exactly what he needs to do.</p><p>At 6-foot-10, Jovic not only has a soft touch in the post but the ability to recognize the open man. Quite simply, if Jovic was able to leverage his length and strength against opponents rather than being bumped off his spots, he would stand a better chance of being efficient. Against second unit players, he might even draw the occasional double, allowing him to hit the open man for an easy shot in an offense that lacks a lot top-tier scorers.</p><p>Improvements in his footwork, awareness and decisiveness would also go a long way towards Jovic being a consistent two-way force.</p><p>Offensively, Jovic improving his footwork is another way to improve his low-post play. However, defensively, Jokic continuing to work on his footwork means making sure he moves with a sharpness laterally that allows him to make up for his lack of agility.</p><p>In terms of his awareness, Jovic’s improvement in play recognition would allow him to either be right on time in his decision-making or one step ahead. Entering his second season, Jovic will certainly be better in this area than he was last season, a fact that was underscored by his play during the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-biggest-concern-jaime-jaquez-jr-2023-nba-summer-league-performance" rel="noopener">2023 NBA Summer League</a>. Subsequently, improving his awareness will also have a positive impact on his decisiveness, as the young forward becomes assured of what he wants to do, needs to do, and can do.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Jacquez and Jovic have been Miami’s most impressive players in these matchups, with their versatility and scoring instincts showing up on a nightly basis.</p><p>Jaquez, the 18th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, averaged 13.0 points (on 42.9 percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent shooting from 3) in 18.8 minutes per game in the California Classic. The last time he saw action was during a meeting with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Dec. 26 when he saw 18 minutes of floor duty, scoring nine points and grabbing three rebounds in a 113-110 home victory.</p><p>Jovic’s absence is not a major hit on Miami, but it does make the Heat’s frontcourt thinner. Fortunately for them, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-bam-adebayos-strong-take-being-mediocre-amid-miamis-2022-struggles" rel="noopener">Bam Adebayo</a> is healthy these days, though both Dewayne Dedmon and Omer Yurtseven are currently sidelined. Dedmon has a chance to return sooner than later after entering the health and safety protocols late last December.  Yurtseven, on the other hand, is still recuperating from surgery on his left ankle.</p><p>As it stands, the Heat only have Caleb Martin, Udonis Haslem, and Adebayo as the remaining healthy bodies up front. In any case, the Heat will continue relying heavily on Adebayo to carry the load of the group, while Martin should see at least a little increase in his usage.</p><p>The 19-year-old <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-bold-predictions-nikola-jovic-his-rookie-season-heat" rel="noopener">Nikola Jovic</a> was drafted by the Heat in the first round (27th overall) in the 2022 NBA Draft. So far this season, the Serbian big man is averaging 5.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.5 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game for the Heat.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His versatility is very intriguing, but he won’t win any NBA MVPs soon.</p><p>Jovic first turned heads at the 2019 Adidas U16 International All-Star Game by scoring 16 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. He continued to play largely at the junior level up to the end of the 2020–21 Adriatic League season. The English-born forward averaged 11.8 points and 5.5 rebounds over 24.7 minutes per game for erstwhile club team Mega Basket. He shot 40.0 percent from outside the arc in his first taste of senior-level competition.</p><p>He established a high standard for himself after his first full season playing in the Adriatic League. In fact, he averaged 18.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.7 blocks over 31 minutes per game playing in the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup. Jovic continued to develop as a prospect by averaging 12.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 28.5 minutes off the bench while making his Serbian Men’s National Team debut at the age of 18.</p><p>So far in the 2022 NBA Summer League, Jovic has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-nikola-jovic-reveals-mindset-ahead-of-rookie-campaign-and-miami-fans-are-going-to-love-it/">attracted a lot of attention</a>. He started slow out of the gates, though, averaging just 4.5 points in his first two games at the California Classic. His breakout game came in the Heat’s third outing against the Golden State Warriors. In that appearance, the 6’11 forward-center raised his production a few notches. Fans saw glimpses of Danilo Gallinari and Deni Avdija in Jovic. He was a confident long-range shooter and moved effectively without the ball. It is unlikely that he will show much of that potential in his first year in Miami as he will play behind Bam Adebayo, Markieff Morris, Dewayne Dedmon, and even Omer Yurtseven. Jovic will not play any wing positions for the Heat</h2><p>Jovic once said that he was a shooting guard or small forward in Serbia. He won’t be one in the NBA. Instead, he will be either a power forward or center for the Heat. Even if his ball-handling abilities are a strength, he won’t have the ball in his hands as frequently as he is used to. In the NBA, he will need to develop his screen-setting, rim protection, rebounding, and roll/pop skills.</p><p>Keep in mind that Markieff Morris and P.J. Tucker were both set to become free agents before the end of the regular season. Consequently, the Heat had a need at the power forward position. Enter Jovic. He won’t be a top-tier starting power forward, however, and he certainly won’t be a top-tier shooting guard or small forward at this level.</p><h2>2. Jovic will be like Nikola Jokic… on defense</h2><p>It’s easy to try and compare Jovic with Jokic, and they do have some similarities.</p><p>It’s just that those similarities are on the defensive side. More specifically, Jovic shares some of Jokic’s defensive weaknesses.</p><p>Jovic is not a great shot blocker, and occasionally his defense may be a touch shoddy. He has to improve his lateral mobility, especially when opposing teams target him in their pick-and-roll spin cycles. He has size, but he should play tougher under the rim if he wants to avoid being eaten alive by NBA centers as he makes his way through the league. Jokic eventually found a way to establish himself defensively even if he isn’t a rim protector. Jovic should find a way to do the same.</p><h2>1. Jovic will not be the best international rookie</h2><p>Some projected that Jovic may be the <a href="https://dknation.draftkings.com/2022/6/19/23072889/nikola-jovic-nba-draft-scouting-report-strengths-weaknesses-player-comparison-stock-grade">top foreign prospect</a> in this year’s draft, but that accolade actually belongs to top overall pick Paolo Banchero, who is eligible to play for Italy internationally. There’s also Frenchman Ousmane Dieng from the New Zealand Breakers, who will likely get more reps with the Knicks than Jovic will get with the Heat.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Nikola Jovic hasn't been great, which might be far from the expectations some Heat fans had entering the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NBA2K23SummerLeague?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">#NBA2K23SummerLeague</a>.
