With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-bam-adebayo-norman-powell-bad-narrative-tyler-herro-amidst-skid">Heat looking to get out of the skid</a>, one player that will no doubt be crucial to the team’s success is Norman Powell, who spoke about his first season with Miami thus far.</p><p>Out of the positives this season for the Heat, Powell has been huge, as he was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers in the offseason, having been worth every penny and more as Miami only traded Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson in the multi-team deal.</p><p>Besides the losing streak, Powell has been a standout, being one of the main offensive scorers for Miami, averaging a team-high 24.6 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field and 43.6 percent from deep. Powell would say this season has been “the most pure basketball” he’s played, helped by the team’s new fast-paced, free-flowing offense.</p><p>“I feel good,” Powell said. “Playing, going out there, not thinking, not worried about anything, just playing the game in front of me, trying to be the best version of myself for the team, trying to be a great leader, trying to show through my years of experience and the different roles that I’ve been in, talking to the guys, with everybody’s role changing and things like that.”</p><p>“I think that’s where I found my niche,” Powell continued. “And where I can be the most impactful with my play and then my leadership style coming in here early, with the young guys, seeing me get my work in, talking to them, keeping them motivated.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Norman Powell on the recent slump</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Heat-forward-Norman-Powell.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>As<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-why-norman-powell-miami-arent-concerned-over-recent-slump"> Powell has said before that he isn’t concerned with the Heat’s slump</a>, there could be some validity in that thinking, especially with how the team’s new offense took the league by surprise to start.</p><p>It was always inevitable that other teams would catch on and adapt, with Miami looking to counter, and mixed with crucial players being in-and-out of the lineup like himself, Tyler Herro, and others, it will be a process.</p><p>“Anytime guys are out for long periods of time, Davion missed a game, but me, Bam, Tyler, have missed multiple games in a row, you know?” Powell said in a one-on-one interview with ClutchPoints. “And then the team has to figure out how to adjust guys stepping into a bigger role, more minutes, how they want to play, how aggressive they want to be, and then coming back, and you’ve got to adjust again.”</p><p>“It’s always going to take a couple games, especially when you have dynamic players that can affect the game in many ways,” Powell continued. “You know, me, Bam, Tyler, Wiggs, D Mitch, when any of us are in and out the lineup, there’s going to be a little funkiness to it to get everybody back in rhythm and in flow. But these are what these days are for having multiple days in between our next game to really figure out the identity and how we want to play on both sides of the ball. Getting a high-usage scorer like Herro back does change aspects, as Powell’s statistics have dipped, as his usage rate was at 27.1 percent in the 17 games to start before, but it will be a “day-by-day” approach for the whole team to get figured out with each other.</p><p>“It’s day by day, you know, I’m saying like, like for us, we don’t want to be playing our best basketball in December, you know, we want to keep, like, mountain climbing. You know, if you keep going up, you’re gonna stop a little bit. You might go down and reroute. But keep climbing,” Powell said. “We want to get to our best basketball around March, February, March, after the All-Star break, you know.”</p><p>“So everything we’re going through now was great for us to, you know, kind of see it, go through, it, feel what it’s like, you know, to go on a four-game losing streak, and for us to mentally be tough, to dig ourselves out of it and start playing our brand of basketball,” Powell continued. “But each day we’re moving closer to the playoffs. With the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-norman-powell-eye-opening-claim-offense-nba-cup-elimination"> Heat looking to improve its offense</a>, there is a popular narrative going around on social media blaming the returning Tyler Herro for the slump.</p><p>Since his return, Miami is 3-5, but in the games Herro has played in, they’re 3-3, with the guard being in only two games as part of the four-game skid. With the Heat known for its new fast-paced, free-flowing offense, as the team leads the league in pace with 105.3 possessions per 48 minutes, it has slowed down since his return.</p><p>The theory around Herro does have holes, as he’s been a net positive when on the floor. Miami has outscored teams by 3.6 points per 100 possessions in the 191 minutes he’s played. The whole talk around Herro has garnered the reaction of team captain Bam Adebayo, who told ClutchPoints after Friday’s practice that it’s a “bad narrative,” and it isn’t the first time he’s been targeted.</p><p>“It’s a bad narrative to start. It’s just a terrible narrative,” Adebayo said. “We’re gonna need Tyler [Herro] at the end of the day. The man brings an aspect to our game where he can go get a bucket at any point in time. You’re gonna need that down these long stretches when the game gets close, and you got to make something out of nothing. So that point, that’s just a bad narrative.”</p><p>“I feel like they’ve been trying to make Tyler the reason for X amount of years. They’ve always been like, ‘Oh, you know, this happens when Tyler…’ like come on man, relax with the narratives,” Adebayo continued.</p><h2><b>Norman Powell on narrative around Tyler Herro and the Heat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Tyler-Herro-and-Norman-Powell-on-Dec.-1-2025-1.jpg"><figcaption>Jim Rassol-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Though it has been a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-makes-guarantee-about-tyler-herro-norman-powell-duo-after-mid-start">middling start to the Heat with Herro’s return,</a> the issue is more the team figuring out how to counter opponents’ adjustments to their fast-paced style, as there have been setbacks with players in and out of the lineups with injuries. Those injuries are even beyond Herro, as some, such as Norman Powell, Davion Mitchell, and others, have missed time during the slump.</p><p>Back to the narrative around Herro, statistics show the problem runs beyond him, as with him on the floor, the team outscored the Magic on Tuesday by 8.1 points per 100 possessions. But the Heat was outplayed by 50 points per 100 possessions in the 14 minutes he was on the bench, as he scored 20 points in total.</p><p>One aspect of the team that is still working to be developed is the chemistry between Herro and Powell, a backcourt duo that could be explosive. Talking about the chatter online, Powell downplays it to ClutchPoints, saying how quickly social media can turn.</p><p>“Just online drama,” Powell said. “If we do something good, everybody’s up in arms, saying we’re going to be a championship team, and you’ll go through a couple losses, miss a couple shots, people are going to be in your DMs and putting out memes and information about how there’s a problem.”</p><p>“We know what we’ve got going on within, we know the chemistry, we know the bond that we have on and off the court,” Powell continued. “And we know basketball, we know it’s going to take a second for everybody to get comfortable when guys are coming in and out of the lineup, roles changing…minutes are up and down, just trying to figure out how we want to play, who’s going to be on the floor.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Tyler Herro answers if he’s bothered by the narrative</b></h2><p>Looking at the recent losses in the slump, including the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-bam-adebayo-calls-out-miami-bad-basketball-nba-cup-magic">Heat’s NBA Cup loss to the Magic</a>, the pace has slowed down to 101.1 possessions per 48 minutes over the last four games. With even five of the team’s six slowest-paced games this season happening in the last eight games.</p><p>Getting a player back like Herro, who does add a lot of offensive firepower to Miami, was inevitable in leading to the team regressing to the mean, especially with the fast start on offense. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-norman-powell-eye-opening-claim-offense-nba-cup-elimination">the Heat’s NBA Cup elimination</a>, fans are wondering what the reason is for the slump and if Tyler Herro is at the forefront of it.</p><p>While it would be easy to point his way with the team having slowed down in the six games he’s played in, with the group being 3-3, it goes beyond Herro’s presence. The statistics show that it isn’t a Herro problem for the team, as when he’s on the floor, Miami has outscored teams by 3.6 points per 100 possessions in the 191 minutes he’s played.</p><p>Even looking at the loss to Orlando, where he scored 20 points, the team outscored the Magic by 8.1 points per 100 possessions, but the Heat was outplayed by 50 points per 100 possessions in the 14 minutes he was on the sidelines.</p><p>The one aspect that fans were excited to see is the backcourt duo with star Norman Powell, though head coach Erik Spoelstra believes they’ll be<a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article313604841.html" rel="noopener"> “fine.”</a></p><p>“We’ll have that opportunity in games to work on that,” Spoelstra said, according to The Miami Herald. “They’ve been working on it behind the scenes. It’s only [72] minutes. So that’ll continue to get better. If you have the skill level that they have, that they both can shoot the basketball, they both can put the ball on the floor, and they both want to make it work, based on my experience, those things work out. And we need it. We need it, quite frankly. Herro would admit it’s still a “work in progress” for him to get back to 100 percent health and also fortify the chemistry with Miami under their new fast-paced offense.</p><p>“It was my sixth game tonight,” Herro said after the Magic loss. “So just coming out here, it’s going to be a work in progress….I just got to continue to fight. We all are trying, and we want to win obviously, and that’s what matters. We’re all intentional, and we just got to continue to work at it, continue to get better. Tyler Herro, back from a toe issue, chipped in 20 points, while Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins each finished with 19. Davion Mitchell added 11 as Miami shot a respectable 45 percent from the field but just 24 percent from deep, going 8-of-33 from three.  </p><p>That shooting dip, combined with a slower game, is where Powell’s comments hit. Herro would echo the same sentiment, saying that while he feels good, it’s a “long process” of getting himself back to 100 percent.</p><p>“I feel good,” Herro said. “Just got to keep it rolling day by day, like I said. It’s a long process of getting my foot back to where it was before the surgery.”</p><p>Herro also looks to bounce back after a rather frustrating outing against the Mavericks, scoring 20 points in the first half, but going scoreless in the second, missing all five shot attempts.</p><p>His usage rate dipped in the second half, with himself and others expressing that the ball needs to find him more, but that will come naturally as everybody gets a full grasp of the system, with head coach Erik Spoelstra “encouraged” by the early returns.</p><p>“I’m really encouraged by how he’s [Herro] been able to fit in and really help us by him getting to his strengths,” Spoelstra said. “We can be so dynamic offensively with everybody healthy and reading the game appropriately. The Heat have been one of the more pleasant surprises of the early NBA season, currently sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference at 14-7.</p><p>Unfortunately, ahead of the Mavericks game, Miami got <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1996322871212433819" rel="noopener">some tough injury news</a> regarding wing Norman Powell.</p><p>“The Heat say Norm Powell (left ankle sprain) is out tonight at Dallas,” reported NBA insider Marc Stein on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>The Heat brought in Powell through a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers over the offseason, and so far, it’s looking like one of the biggest home runs of any team this summer.</p><p>Powell has been playing at a borderline All-Star level for Miami, and recently torched his former Clippers teammates during a blowout victory over Los Angeles on Monday night.</p><p>The good news for Miami is that Tyler Herro recently returned from his own injury after missing the opening chunk of the season, meaning the Heat still have ample perimeter playmaking even in Powell’s absence. On Monday night, they made light work of a floundering Los Angeles Clippers team and took them to the woodshed en route to a 140-123 victory. This reworked Heat offense continues to impress, as all of their starters scored in double figures, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-norman-powells-injury-status-clippers-revenge-game">led by Norman Powell,</a> who put up 30 points in a bit of a revenge game for him against his former squad.</p><p>It must feel really good for Powell to stick it to his former team; after all, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/the-clippers-heat-trade-that-changed-everything-for-both-teams">Clippers decided to trade him away to bring in John Collins</a>, who’s struggled all season long in his new digs. Meanwhile, Powell is right at home in Miami, and the Heat’s offense wouldn’t be this explosive if it weren’t for his microwave scoring exploits.</p><p>But Powell isn’t the kind of guy who puffs his chest and says that a team’s change in fortunes comes down to his presence and his presence alone. In fact, Powell credited another Heat guard in Davion Mitchell for <a href="https://x.com/BradyHawk305/status/1995696356942549341" rel="noopener">setting the tone</a> for the team defensively, and he wants Mitchell to be rewarded for it with a prestigious defensive acclaim.</p><p>““First team, first team [all-defense],” Powell was yelling during Davion Mitchell’s interview, as per Brady Hawk of Five Reasons Sports. “If they don’t have him first team, something is wrong.”</p><p>The Heat’s offense is getting all the praise, which is understandable, but they wouldn’t be where they are (14-7 record) if it weren’t for their ability to lock down on the defensive end. Unless there is a dramatic change, he is expected to play in Monday’s game, looking to continue his excellence. Powell had been dealing with a groin strain that made him miss last Monday’s win over the Dallas Mavericks, suffering the injury in a few games prior against the Chicago Bulls, but came back last Wednesday.</p><p>He would also play in Saturday’s loss to the Detroit Pistons, scoring 28 points in the effort, making a point to say that the team overall needed to <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1994982273427362153?s=20" rel="noopener">“make a strong stand early.”</a> Detroit came out fast in attacking the paint as Miami was sluggish to start, and though the team made a run in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late.</p><p>“They’re a paint team, that’s where they live, they attack the paint,” Powell said to ClutchPoints after the Pistons recorded 76 points in the paint. “I thought we just didn’t make a strong enough stand early in the game collectively; they were getting whatever they wanted. They were getting down there. They’re finishing, getting fouls, and-ones, whatever it was. While it remains to be seen <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-how-tyler-herros-return-could-mix-up-miamis-new-offense">how the Heat mix up the new offense</a>, one area of the team that is highly anticipated is the backcourt duo of Tyler Herro and Norman Powell.</p><p>Though Herro made his season debut in the win over the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, Powell missed the game with a groin strain, but would be upgraded to “probable” ahead of Wednesday’s contest. As it’ll be the first glimpse of how the two guards will play with each other, head coach Erik Spoelstra said to ClutchPoints that both of the stars’ skillsets “make us a whole lot more dynamic.”</p><p>“Yeah, we’re excited about it. However, Powell downplayed any adjustment period for the two guards, saying he has worked well alongside more ball-dominant players in the past.</p><p>“I think we’re going to complement each other with our play style, with the way they’re guarding me,” Powell said to ClutchPoints on Nov. 16. “Now they have to guard Tyler as well. So I think we’re going to have him in a lot of rotations, especially with the pace. The ball has found its way into everybody’s hands, and with the shot-creator DNA of both players, Miami has a chance to be a team that will be even harder to scout.</p><p>Going beyond Herro and Powell, the team is getting back Andrew Wiggins and Nikola Jovic after both missed a handful of games, marking Wednesday the first game fans will get to see a fully healthy roster. As there was cause for concern, especially after ClutchPoints learned <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1993018604703694922?s=20" rel="noopener">that there was no timetable</a> for Powell to return, head coach Erik Spoelstra would downplay the injury before Monday’s game, saying the concern is <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1993092797063475633?s=20" rel="noopener">“not super high.”</a></p><p>“No,” Spoelstra said when asked if there had been a setback to Powell’s groin injury. “I think the bigger thing was that it was a back-to-back. So far this season, Powell has led Miami by averaging 25.4 points per game on shooting 50 percent from the field and 46.4 percent from three-point range.</p><p>Though fans wanted to see the backcourt duo of Powell and Herro together, they will have to wait a bit longer. There could be a conversation that the league-leading fast pace could lead to injuries like Powell currently has, especially since Andrew Wiggins and Nikola Jovic continue to miss games.</p><p><a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1993095292909240764?s=20" rel="noopener">“There potentially could be,”</a> Spoelstra said when asked if the up-tempo style could lead to more injuries. “But look, like how much we have to disclose now, you wouldn’t even say Norm’s injury was a strain 10 years ago. You just say he’s sore, and then you have to say what grade it is…I see that the game is being played faster, which is true. The competitive defense and the extending of the defense is covering more ground than it used to.”</p><p>“So you’re moving your body in different ways. Guys train for it probably better than they used to,” Spoelstra continued. “So I don’t know where the line is right now with us. Knock on wood, what we’re dealing with right now, the three guys, is manageable right now. And so we’ll just see where that is.
