He is about to ink a deal worth $212.5 million which will span for five years. This opens the championship window quite a lot for the Jalen Brunson-led squad. But, no one was more happy to know of this information than Josh Hart.<a href="https://x.com/joshhart/status/1806094367222104255?s=46&amp;t=1V0JygkIQcd2ZE3o0YUEUw" rel="noopener"> He outlined his excitement</a> on X.</p><p>“Demons on the wings,” the Knicks iron man wrote.</p><p>Josh Hart is not at all far off with this declaration. Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are going to be the ones manning the wings for the Knicks. These two are great two-way players who can switch from a ballhandler at point guard and meet a seven-foot big man on the rim as well. The versatility that they offer to Coach Tom Thibodeau is unlike any other.</p><p>This could mean that more diverse sets on offense are run within the Knicks system. Moreover, it takes away a lot of defensive load out of Jalen Brunson. Everyone can help their primary star on zones and even cover for them in man-to-man directives.</p><p>Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby are ready to hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy for the Knicks. But, his impact has been huge. They went on a rampage en route to a 50-win season which put them second in the Eastern Conference. They even capped off the regular season with a five-game winning streak such that they had momentum entering the postseason.</p><p>The production that Anunoby put out was symptomatic of his all-around work ethic. He was able to knock down 48.8% of his shots from all three levels scoring for 14.1 points a night. Not to mention, he also brought down 4.4 total rebounds for the Knicks. One of the best parts of Anunoby’s playstyle is his defense. The Knicks saw him hound each and every ballhandler and clog passing lanes effectively for 1.7 steals a game.</p><p>If a player does get past the suffocating Knicks defense, Anunoby has been great in moving swiftly in the weakside. This makes it easy for him to meet the opponent at the apex of their shot. All of it added up to averaging a block per game. A day after pulling off a massive trade to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-how-knicks-mikal-bridges-trade-impacts-og-anunoby-isaiah-hartenstein">acquire Mikal Bridges</a> from the Brooklyn Nets, New York took care of business on the OG Anunoby front by securing the former Indiana Hoosiers star’s commitment to a new deal.</p><p>After news broke that Anunoby has struck a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-og-anunoby-212-million-contract-free-agency">massive five-year 212.5 million contract</a> with the Knicks, New York star point guard Jalen Brunson immediately fired a <a href="https://x.com/jalenbrunson1/status/1806103482111303746" rel="noopener">wild reaction</a> to his team running it back with its trade acquisition.</p><p>“OG CAN I HOLD A DOLLAR!!!!!!!!” Brunson posted on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) Wednesday night.</p><p>Traded by the Toronto Raptors to the Knicks back in December along with Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn in exchange for RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and a second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Anunoby has clearly impressed the Knicks, who believe that he’s going to be one of their top performers for years to come.</p><p>In 23 games with the Knicks in the 2023-24 NBA regular season, Anunoby averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and posting a 39.4 percent success rate on shots taken from behind the arc. Anunoby’s ability to do at least a little bit of everything and do damage on opponents in a number of ways makes him a perfect weapon alongside Brunson, who is unquestionably the Knicks’ top offensive option. The Knicks are thinking of the NBA championship and their recent moves are undeniable proof that they are looking in the direction of the Larry O’Brien Trophy. The Celtics are a huge obstacle for the rest of the East, but the Knicks seemingly have the tools to put up a tough challenge for Jayson Tatum and company should they cross paths in the next playoffs.</p><p>They could have given the Celtics plenty of headaches in the 2024 NBA Playoffs but a banged-up New York squad just couldn’t overcome injuries to some of their key players, including Anunoby, as they fell prey to the Indiana Pacers after seven games in the second round. The Pacers, of course, ended up being a sacrificial lamb in the Celtics’ incredible playoff run that culminated in a championship parade in Beantown — the same type of celebration the Knicks are eyeing the Big Apple to have in 2025.</p><p>In the previous season, the Knicks had a great offensive and defensive balance, as evidenced by the fact that they ranked eighth in both adjusted offensive rating and adjusted defensive rating with <a href="https://dunksandthrees.com/" rel="noopener">117.4 and 112.8 ratings</a>, respectively. In a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-acquire-og-anunoby-raptors-massive-trade">deal with the Toronto Raptors</a>, New York forfeited Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, and a second-round pick in exchange for Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa, and Malachi Flynn.</p><p>The Knicks had made Anunoby their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-og-anunoby-priority-impacts-julius-randle-trade">top priority</a> entering the offseason, which is why there was a lot of momentum to get a deal done before he officially hit free agency on June 30.</p><p>News of Anunoby’s new contract with the Knicks, which can’t become official until the free agency period begins, comes less than a full day after the Knicks pulled off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-stunning-mikal-bridges-nets-rockets-trade">blockbuster trade for Mikal Bridges</a> from the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks now retain Anunoby before free agency, making them legitimate championship contenders next to the likes of the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>What makes Anunoby such a unique player for the Knicks is the fact that he contributes on both sides of the court. In addition to averaging 14.1 points and shooting 39.4 percent from three-point range in 23 games after being traded to New York ahead of the trade deadline, Anunoby consistently drew the assignment of guarding the other team’s best player. Anunoby is viewed as one of the best wing defenders in the entire NBA.</p><p>With Anunoby on the court, the Knicks posted a 20-3 record during the regular season. New York was 6-3 in the playoffs when Anunoby played. Unfortunately, he dealt with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-og-anunoby-out-game-6-vs-pacers">hamstring injury</a> that limited his ability to be on the floor against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Knicks went on to lose this series in seven games.</p><p>Entering the 2024-25 season, Anunoby will now have the highest payroll on the Knicks. With a contract that has an annual average value of about $42.5 million, Anunoby will likely earn upwards of $48 million during the 2028-29 season, a year in which he gets a fifth-year player option.</p><p>This is just one of many contract situations the Knicks will deal with this offseason, as this new deal and the acquisition of Bridges now raises serious questions about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/whats-next-knicks-after-mikal-bridges-trade">Isaiah Hartenstein’s future</a> with the team. Hartenstein, who stepped up for the Knicks when Mitchell Robinson went down with various injuries, is viewed as one of the better free agents on the market. Inching dangerously close to the tax line and apron, it continues to look unlikely that the 26-year-old big man will return to New York in free agency. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-stunning-mikal-bridges-nets-rockets-trade">New York Knicks were ripe</a> for a monster move given how many draft assets and tradeable contracts they had, and on Tuesday night, they finally made their much-anticipated major maneuver as they traded five first-round picks, an unprotected pick swap, and a second-round pick, along with Bojan Bogdanovic’s contract, to the Brooklyn Nets for Mikal Bridges.</p><p>Nonetheless, while acquiring Bridges makes the Knicks a much better team, the trade they pulled off will make it difficult for them to keep other core members. By acquiring more salary than they gave up, the Knicks <a href="https://x.com/YossiGozlan/status/1805784931433693275" rel="noopener">hard-capped themselves</a> at the first luxury tax apron, which is set to be at around $178.7 million. OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein, two crucial members of the team, are free agents, and the Knicks will now find it difficult to keep either of them, let alone both.</p><p>Given how much the Knicks gave up for Anunoby, however, it makes sense that they will pull out all the stops to keep him in town. And it looks like this is what the Knicks will be doing, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reporting that they are <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1805792814535499842" rel="noopener">“still determined”</a> to keep the 26-year old forward in the Big Apple. However, doing so may come at the cost of Hartenstein.</p><p>It’s unclear just how big of a contract OG Anunoby will be commanding in free agency, but he is an unrestricted free agent, so he is free to choose which team to sign for, as long as they reach his contract demands. The Knicks, following the Mikal Bridges trade, still have around $41.56 million in space before they reach the first luxury tax apron. That, one would think, should be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-get-crucial-og-anunoby-free-agency-update-after-exit-buzz">enough to keep Anunoby</a>.</p><p>Keeping Isaiah Hartenstein is a bit tricker, however, as Wojnarowski reported. With Hartenstein set to command around $13-$14 million annually, the Knicks may want to get to around $50 million in first apron space if they were to keep both Hartenstein and Anunoby. To do so, the Knicks will have to trade Mitchell Robinson away and get almost nothing in salary in return. It all boils down to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-knicks-isaiah-hartenstein-contract-limitation-opens-door-departure">who the Knicks prefer</a> to be their long-term center.</p><p>Either way, there is still a strong chance that either Anunoby or Hartenstein stay; if they do, the Knicks should have one of the deepest, most well-rounded cores in the association with enough shooting, defense, and rebounding to make some noise for next season and, perhaps, mount a legitimate challenge to the reigning champion Boston Celtics’ repeat bid.</p><h2>There is no way the Knicks are letting OG Anunoby walk</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/OG-Anunoby-reacts-to-making-a-shot.jpg"></figure><p>The sunk cost fallacy is one of the most common human cognitive biases there is; when one has invested a lot of assets, be it tangible or intangible, into something, one finds it more difficult to let go and start over. But with the Knicks, this does not apply. OG Anunoby is not a sunk cost yet; he is entering just his age-27 season, so he’s still in the middle of his prime, and considering how much New York gave up to the Toronto Raptors to acquire him, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/new-york-knicks-just-hand-the-philadelphia-76ers-og-anunoby">it will be painful</a> to watch him walk after just half a season.</p><p>As one would recall, the Knicks gave up RJ Barrett, a 24-year old wing who has been coming into his own as a more efficient scorer, and Immanuel Quickley, a dynamite spark plug who gave the Knicks some microwave scoring off the bench. Quickley is only 25 years of age, and he appears to be blossoming as the Raptors’ starting point guard.</p><p>Losing those two for a player who only played a total of 32 games for the team (regular season and playoffs combined) will be a tough pill to swallow. Expect the Knicks to do whatever it takes to give Anunoby the contract he desires, especially when they’re stacking up on wing depth to try and combat their greatest opponent in the Eastern Conference — the Celtics.</p><h2><b>To keep or not to keep Isaiah Hartenstein, part two</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Joel-Embiid-posting-up-against-Isaiah-Hartenstein-during-the-2024-NBA-Playoffs.jpg"></figure><p>During the 2022 offseason, the Los Angeles Clippers chose to sign John Wall instead of keeping Isaiah Hartenstein. Hartenstein emerged as a solid backup center for the Clippers, an active rim protector and rebounder with passing chops, but instead, the Clippers saw Wall as someone who could solve their point guard woes. That decision proved to be the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-isaiah-hartenstein-was-ready-to-return-to-la-but-making-most-of-knicks-run">wrong one for the Clippers</a>, with Wall looking washed up almost immediately into the 2022-23 campaign.</p><p>This time around, it’s the Knicks that will be facing the decision of whether or not to keep Hartenstein. They will have to choose between him and Mitchell Robinson especially when they’re hell-bent on keeping OG Anunoby. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When news broke that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-new-yorks-massive-mikal-bridges-trade-splits-nba-fans">New York Knicks</a> had traded away an absolute <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-stunning-mikal-bridges-nets-rockets-trade">boatload of draft picks to acquire Mikal Bridges</a> from their cross-river rivals, the Brooklyn Nets, it left many a Philadelphia 76ers fan with two major thoughts: 1. wow, that’s a lot of picks for Mikal Bridges and 2. does this mean <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/og-anunobys-next-team-odds-favors-76ers-over-thunder-spurs">OG Anunoby is available</a>?</p><p>On paper, the internal debate would go a little something like this: Bridges and Anunoby are both small forwards with the size, length, and skillset to guard up or down on the wings. While the duo could theoretically play together at the three and four spot, or even with one of them kicking up to play the two-guard spot Paul George-style, the team is already very expensive after Anunoby opted out of this roughly $20 million player option. Unless the Knicks are willing to pay up to the tune of $40-plus million a year for Anunoby to be on a team that will be in the second apron once new deals for Jalen Brunson and eventually Bridges kick in, they will have to get creative with their contracts in order to stay financially viable.</p><p>Could the Knicks make that work? Sure, New York is desperate for a winner after being varying shades of okay for, well, as long as Bridges has been alive, and if the Knicks use Birds Rights, they can offer more money and more years than any other team in the Association.</p><p>But will they? Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><h2><b>The New York Knicks want to re-sign OG Anunoby.</b></h2><p>Shortly after announcing to the basketball world that Bridges would have to learn a new route to work, as he would likely get to stay in his New York apartment but would now have to commute to Manhatten, instead of Brooklyn, ESPN Insider Adrian Wojnarowski took to his very popular X account to let fans know that even though the “Villanova 3” is now a “Big 4,” that doesn’t mean the team is handing their big 2024 trade deadline acquisition his walking papers, as they want to <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1805792814535499842" rel="noopener">keep him around too if possible</a>.</p><p>Welp, that’s that, right? The Knicks can offer more money than the Sixers, and as a result, they will surely secure Anunoby’s services heading into the fall. Not necessarily, as the Sixers may be hard-capped on how much they can offer the Indiana prospect, as it is called a “max” contract for a reason, they can’t necessarily offer the same role that the 6-foot-7 forward may want to fill moving forward, which is good news for 76ers GM Daryl Morey but bad news for his counterpart in Manhattan.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><h2><b>The Philadelphia 76ers can offer OG Anunoby a bigger role than NY.</b></h2><p>If maximizing his earning potential is at the top of Anunoby’s wishlist in free agency, and the Knicks are willing to give him a deal that starts with a two instead of a one, then there really isn’t a point in truly testing free agency, as there isn’t a team out there who can offer up more, even if they would like to.</p><p>And yet, in Toronto, Anunoby was just as concerned with his role as he was with his per-year salary, as according to Jake Fisher of Yahoo Sports in 2022, Anunoby <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10037274-latest-nba-offseason-intel-does-og-anunoby-want-out-of-toronto" rel="noopener">wanted to do more on offense</a>, instead of being relegated to a lesser role behind Pascal Siakum and Scottie Barnes.</p><p>While Anunoby may still have plays called for him in New York if he were to stick with the team, which did happen in 2024, it’s hard not to feel like he would be the team’s second-banana forward behind Bridges in New York and third – at best – perimeter offensive option with Brunson still locked into the top spot. Granted, in Philly, Anunoby would be the third in Nick Nurse’s Big 3 too, but with Embiid being just as helpful as a screener as he could be as a ball hog in the painted area.</p><p>After watching Embiid and Jimmy Butler make magic happen in 2018-19, could Anunoby, who was on the bench at the time as a deep reserve, see himself filling a similar role now that both he and “The Process” have taken their games up multiple notches?</p><p>As an unrestricted free agent, Anunoby can now do whatever he’d like as he prepares for the next stage of his career, be that returning to New York, signing with the 76ers, or even joining a surprise team like the Orlando Magic, who have cap room. Anunoby played his role with the Knicks well during the latter half of the 2023-24 season; however, he has made a big contract decision that could affect his future with the team. Anunoby has <a href="https://x.com/FredKatz/status/1805354230875648456" rel="noopener">declined his $19.9 million</a> player option and will officially be an unrestricted free agency, per The Athletic’s Fred Katz.</p><p>OG Anunoby’s contract move gives him more options. He can negotiate and resign with the Knicks, or he can accept another offer teams give him. Hopefully, his decision to decline his player option results in New York simply restructuring his contract.</p><p>Anunoby was a key part of New York’s late-season push. After being traded from the Raptors, the 6’7″ forward averaged 14.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. In addition, he shot an earnest 39.4 percent on three-pointers. Anunoby was a stout presence in the playoffs as well until a hamstring injury limited his play in the later stages.</p><p>Hopefully, he and the Knicks can work things out so he can return to continue being a two-way force for the team. However, if not, ClutchPoints’ Knicks Beat Reporter Drew Maresca outlined two alternatives.</p><p>First, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-new-york-og-anunoby-nba-free-agency" rel="noopener">the Knicks can complete</a> a sign-and-trade with Anunoby.</p><p>“If Anunoby is miffed by the Knicks’ initial offer and/or if the two sides simply can’t agree on terms, New York could pivot to a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Clippers [for Paul George]. Los Angeles is far more likely to pay Anunoby than George, given Anunoby’s relative youth,” Maresca stated.</p><p>The second alternative Maresca proposed is for the Knicks to draft an “OG Anunoby clone.” New York could draft a player similar to Anunoby and develop him into a 3-and-D player.</p><h2><b>Why OG Anunoby should resign with Knicks despite contract move</b></h2><p>Anunoby’s presence on the Knicks is important not just for production, but for team chemistry. Jalen Brunson and Donte DiVincenzo discussed the role the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-jalen-brunson-gets-100-honest-being-left-off-team-usa-roster">Knicks’ sense of togetherness played</a> in their stellar regular season run.</p><p>“It’s a mixture of the chemistry we have, a mixture of the coaches and how they want us to have a mentality,” Brunson said in April. “Guys just have that mindset. It’s how most of us grew up as basketball players.”</p><p>DiVincenzo further emphasized that New York’s locker room has supreme synergy.</p><p>“I think we genuinely like each other. It’s not BS, it’s not for the cameras — I think everybody in this locker room likes each other and everybody in this locker room wants everybody else to succeed. That’s the rarity here,” DiVincenzo said.</p><p>“It’s not ‘I’m trying to get mine, I hope you succeed as well.’ It’s ‘I hope you succeed, and you’re gonna help me succeed at the same time.’ And I think that’s the overall mindset in this locker room and it’s helped us get 50 wins this year,” he added.</p><p>OG Anunoby was an important part of the team culture. Once he returns healthy, New York can avenge their second-round exit from 2024. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>There have been recent reports indicating that OG Anunoby is not happy with the current offer the New York Knicks have on the table for him as he heads into unrestricted free agency, but the <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/more-new-exclusive-nba-chatter-on" rel="noopener">current thought</a> is that he still re-signs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-perfect-mitchell-robinson-trade-looks-like-knicks">with the Knicks</a>.</p><p>“The Knicks, despite some recent murmurs about OG Anunoby considering his options elsewhere, have been painted as a strong favorite to re-sign the former Toronto Raptor since acquiring him in late December,” Marc Stein wrote in his newsletter.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-talk-to-wizards-about-mitchell-robinson-trade">The Knicks acquired</a> OG Anunoby in a trade with the Toronto Raptors in late December, sending Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett and draft compensation to Toronto to complete the deal. New York has all of the incentives in the world to do what it can to retain Anunoby, as it would be a tough look to lose out on him after giving up those assets to acquire him.</p><p>Anunoby is represented by CAA and he has Sam Rose as one of his agents, the son of Knicks president Leon Rose. Given the ties the Knicks front office has to CAA, and the desire to keep Anunoby, it would be a shock if they were not able to retain him. That thought prevailed for many, even with the reports that he was unhappy with the way negotiations were going. It might take another team bidding up Anunoby’s price to get the Knicks to offer something that would make him happy, but that would require him to hit the open market to get an offer from another team to create leverage with the Knicks.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if the Knicks are able to retain Anunoby. He is a key part of the team, and was viewed as part of the future when he was acquired, despite only having one year left on his contract. It seems that the Knicks feel good about their ability to keep Anunoby, and the same goes for Isaiah Hartenstein, but there are other teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder or Orlando Magic who could beat New York’s offer financially.</p><p>After acquiring Anunoby, the Knicks looked like one of the best teams in the NBA in January up until Julius Randle suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Injuries kept them from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-went-wrong-knicks-nba-playoffs">fulfilling their full potential</a>, but they look like 2025 NBA Championship contenders, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-players-knicks-must-re-sign-2024-nba-free-agency">if they bring everyone back</a>. </p><p>But that’s a big “if”. There are two key guys who can sign elsewhere without the Knicks matching offers, and they are both uniquely important to the Knicks’ success — Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein. We covered how the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-the-knicks-can-do-if-isaiah-hartenstein-signs-elsewhere">Knicks can pivot</a> if Hartenstein signs with another team. So, let’s explore what the Knicks could do to mitigate the potential loss of Anunoby.</p><p>The Knicks went 20-3 with Anunoby in the regular season and 6-3 with him in the playoffs. He was an obvious impetus for good outcomes, as he accumulated an astonishing +353 in 23 regular season games with the Knicks. The former Indiana Hoosier is a lock-down defender who showed flashes of a Kawhi Leonard-like offensive game in the 2024 playoffs. </p><p>Anunoby can defend virtually every position on the floor. And he doesn’t need the ball to impact the game. Who doesn’t want a guy like that?</p><h2><b>Negotiations between New York and Anunoby off to a rough start</b></h2><p>But like the infamous Wu-Tang Clan song says, cash rules everything around me. Unfortunately, the Knicks first contract offer to Anunoby was unimpressive. He will probably enter unrestricted free agency shortly, and the Knicks would obviously prefer to avoid a bidding war. </p><p>Fortunately, Anunoby is represented by CAA, the agency previously overseen by Knicks’ executive Leon Rose. So, the Knicks are probably still in the driver’s seat regarding re-signing Anunoby given that connection. </p><p>Still, it’s possible Anunoby bolts. Objectively, it doesn’t make sense for the Knicks to play hard ball in negotiating with him. The Knicks cannot repurpose the money they would spend to re-sign Anunoby, as that would put them over the salary cap. But because New York owns Anunoby’s Full Bird Rights, they can offer him more than anyone else. </p><p>Pascal Siakam’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-pascal-siakam-verge-lucrative-long-term-extension">contract extension</a> with the Indiana Pacers is probably a realistic starting point for negotiations (four-year/$189.5 million). Siakam is three-and-a-half years older than Anunoby, but he is far more resilient, as he’s missed considerably fewer games due to injury. </p><p>If, by some series of unfortunate events, the Knicks and Anunoby are unable to come to an agreement, what are they to do? They would have shipped out two major building blocks (RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley) and have nothing to show for it. </p><p>But it’s not <i>that</i> simple. They can still maneuver and potentially replace the one-time All-Defensive player.</p><h2><b>Move #1: Sign-and-Trade Anunoby</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Paul-George-driving-with-the-basketball-against-the-Dallas-Mavericks.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>While the sign-and-trade maneuver has been marginalized by changes to the CBA, they do still take place. Still, if there is another player interested in changing teams, the idea of a sign-and-trade could be mutually beneficial. Enter Paul George. </p><p>If Anunoby is really that miffed by the Knicks initial offer and/or if the two sides simply can’t agree on terms, New York could pivot to a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. Los Angeles is far more likely to pay Anunoby than George, given Anunoby’s relative youth. </p><p>For the Knicks, George is a great plug-and-play guy who can fit alongside virtually any supporting cast. He would instantly improve the Knicks offense. And while he’s not the defender that Anunoby is, he’s still an above-average defender despite his advanced age (34). </p><p>Sure, New York would have to pay the older George just as much  annually (if not more),  but it would likely be on a shorter deal (think two years for George vs. four or five for Anunoby). That makes the idea of George all the more appealing. While George has also struggled with injuries in recent seasons, he did just play in 74 games last season, instilling confidence in his resiliency.</p><p>For this deal to work, Anunoby would have to be interested in a move to Los Angeles. However, this type of a deal could also work with a third team of Anunoby’s choosing. But that would likely cost New York additional assets.</p><h2><b>Move #2: Draft an OG Anunoby clone (Ryan Dunn, Virginia)</b></h2><p>Disclaimer: No rookie will match the impact of Anunoby. But they can chip away at some of the lost produciton. And Ryan Dunn looks like he has the chops to do so, at least defensively. </p><p>Dunn is widely viewed as the best defender in the 2024 draft class. Subsequently, he is seen as a quintessential Tom Thibodeau guy, which isn’t a bad thing for a rookie hoping to crack the rotation of a coach who has historically shied away from playing youngsters.</p><p>Specifically, Dunn is six-foot-eight with a seven-foot-one wingspan, meaning he can guard most positions on the floor. He is also a very good rebounder, which could further the Knicks’ dominance of the glass. His shot definitely needs some work, but New York wouldn’t demand much of Dunn by way of offense. </p><p>As mentioned above, no rookie will ever play with the efficiency and poise of a star-level veteran. But Dunn appears to be about as NBA-ready as anyone the Knicks will be able to draft. And grabbing a young Anunoby clone can’t hurt, even if Anunoby re-signs. </p><h2><b>Move #3: Explore signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Caleb Martin, or Kelly Oubre</b></h2><p>Any of the three players mentioned above can help fill the void left by an Anunoby departure. Granted, none are anywhere near as good as Anunoby, but they all do similar things.</p><p>Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a three-and-D threat. He shot 41.5% on three-pointers over the past two seasons with the Denver Nuggets and has been one of his team’s best wing defenders. The 31-year-old could be relatively expensive, but the Knicks shouldn’t be looking into a long-term deal.</p><p>If the mid-level exception (MLE) isn’t enough to nab Caldwell-Pope, they can turn their attention to Caleb Martin or Kelly Oubre. Martin is more of a jack-of-all trades type of player, whereas Oubre has less offensive versatility. Oubre’s impact in Philadelphia is questionable (given that the 76ers were better when he was off the floor), but he probably impressed some people in the Knicks’ front office with his defense on Jalen Brunson in the 2024 playoffs. Conversely, Martin will probably receive a good amount of interest from a number of contenders; however, the real question will be how much are teams willing to offer for his services.</p><p>To be clear, no combination of these moves makes up for losing Anunoby. The goal is to re-sign him and see if the Knicks can maintain the success we saw in January. But if he prefers a different team and/or role, New York can avoid suffering a major setback by following the suggestions listed above. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New York Knicks are still expected by many to re-sign OG Anunoby this offseason, but he reportedly is <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/276126/OG-Anunoby-Preparing-To-Test-Open-Market-Not-Thrilled-With-Knicks-Offer" rel="noopener">not too happy</a> with the current offer that is on the table, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.</p><p>“Let’s keep an eye on that,” Brian Windhorst said on Get Up, according to RealGM. “Most people believe Anunoby will stay with New York, but there have been indications he may want to test the market, because he’s not thrilled with what the Knicks are offering.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-josh-hart-roasted-tom-thibodeau-kyrie-irving-matchup">The Knicks acquired</a> OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors in the middle of this past season, but he is an impending unrestricted free agent this offseason. He left Klutch Sports last June to sign with CAA, which has a ton <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-knicks-star-og-anunobys-contract-update">of Knicks ties</a>. None closer than Anunoby’s agent, Sam Rose, who is the son of Knicks president Leon Rose. Given that connection, it would be a surprise if Anunoby and the Knicks still do not bring back Anunoby.</p><p>Many believe that Anunoby will get at least $35 million this offseason, and that it will come from the Knicks. However, the Philadelphia 76ers have cap space and have been linked to Anunoby. It seems more likely that the 76ers will make a serious Paul George pursuit this offseason, but Anunoby would fill a similar need.</p><p>Anunoby’s injury history is a concern, but the Knicks were at their best in January shortly after acquiring him from the Raptors. With Anunoby in the fold playing alongside Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, the Knicks looked like one of the best teams in the league. It is understandable for the Knicks to want to run things back next season. Time will tell if that is possible, and Anunoby is not the only player who might not be back.</p><h2><b>Knicks hoping to keep OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein</b></h2><p>Anunoby is an important piece, obviously. However, Isaiah Hartenstein is an important piece as well, and teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder can offer more than the Knicks can due to the salary cap. The team seems optimistic that it will be able to retain both players. It will be up to Leon Rose to do good business this summer to keep this team together.</p><p>The Knicks are also said to be monitoring potential moves to upgrade the team, but only time will tell if that move will actually be possible. The first orders of business will be to keep Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein. It will be interesting to see if Rose is able to pull that off, and how much both of those players will be paid, if they are retained.</p><p>As far as Anunoby goes, the relationship ties between the agency and the front office gives reason for optimism. The Knicks likely will be able to up their offer based on Anunoby’s market. Anunoby’s elite presence on the defensive end, as well as his offensive production, proved that he’s going to be a valuable member of the team for a long time. That realization came at an opportune time, as his contract is set to expire soon.</p><p>Now, the Knicks are looking to try and negotiate a deal with Anunoby. Michael Scotto and Ian Begley’s report <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/knicks-rumors-jalen-brunson-julius-randle-og-anunoby-isaiah-hartenstein-thibs-free-agency/" rel="noopener">paints a rather interesting picture</a> of the negotiations between the star and his team. Many in the league reportedly expect that New York will be able to keep the star forward. Scotto also named the expected value of the deal, but Begley also noted that competing deals could drive up the price.</p><p>Scotto: “The leaguewide expectation is that OG Anunoby will return to the Knicks. The question is, for how much? From executives I’ve talked to around the league, Anunoby’s floor appears to be $35 million, and his ceiling is a max contract.”</p><p>Begley: ” If they go well beyond $35 million, it’s going to be because of Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, or another team with cap space coming in with a significant offer that forces the Knicks to exceed that.”</p><p>Philly and Oklahoma City are two teams that have a real reason to push for Anunoby. The Sixers could pivot to pursuing the Knicks star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-joel-embiid-paul-george-recruitment-barely-dodges-tampering">if their Paul George push fails</a>. On the other hand, the Thunder have the cap space to chase OG, who would be an instant upgrade over Josh Giddey in the starting lineup.</p><p>The Knicks acquired OG Anunoby in a midseason trade with the Toronto Raptors. It makes sense, as they gave up a significant haul to acquire Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors this season, so it would be tough to let him go after giving up Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett and draft compensation. Hartenstein put together a great season, and was one of the better value signings in free agency over the last few years, which gets overshadowed by the signing of Jalen Brunson in the same offseason.</p><p>As far as Anunoby, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-knicks-isaiah-hartenstein-contract-limitation-opens-door-departure">the Knicks can</a> offer him a five-year, $245 million max deal. That might be what it takes, as Anunoby is set to have interest from multiple suitors, including the Philadelphia 76ers. Anunoby is a defensive force on the wing who shoots well from the outside, although he does not create his own shot much. There is a ton of value for that in the NBA, even with Anunoby’s injury history.</p><p>Hartenstein will have a lot of interest as well, and the maximum offer New York can give him is $72.5 million over four years. The Oklahoma City Thunder have been mentioned as a team that is very interested and has the cap space to offer a significant deal. Begley mentioned the 76ers, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets among the teams that have the cap flexibility to potentially beat out the Knicks for Hartenstein.</p><p>Still, the Knicks feel they are in a good place with both players to bring them back.</p><p>“The Knicks obviously know that both players will garner strong interest from opposing teams,” Begley wrote. “But even factoring that in, members of the organization felt earlier in the offseason that they were in a good place on both Anunoby and Hartenstein as both players approach their free agencies. That’s according to people in touch with the team after their season ended in a second round loss to Indiana.”</p><h2><b>Knicks comfortable running it back, but will be aggressive to upgrade</b></h2><p>Given the injuries the Knicks had in the playoffs and how they nearly got to the Eastern Conference Finals, it is understandable that they are comfortable running it back, but Begley did indicate that they will not be shy to make an upgrade if an opportunity presents itself.</p><p>“But whether it’s this offseason or further down the line, the Knicks will be aggressive if an opportunity to significantly improve the roster arises,” Begley said.</p><p>There has been a prevailing thought that the Knicks would need to land another star player to potentially contend for an NBA title. He will surely have his fair share of potential suitors this summer, but the Knicks seem motivated to keep him.</p><p>New York is especially worried about the Philadelphia 76ers making a push for him. This would further stimulate the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-players-knicks-must-re-sign-2024-nba-free-agency">Knicks to retain him</a>, as sources say New York absolutely does not want Anunoby going to its division rivals, Sigel notes.</p><p>Anunoby is expected to get a max deal.</p><h2><b>Will the Knicks trade Julius Randle?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/julius-randle-imagn.jpg"><figcaption>John Jones-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Knicks find themselves in a quandary heading into the offseason.</p><p>They have a rather tricky financial situation, as they don’t have a whole lot of money to work with and have to worry about re-signing both Anunoby and center Isaiah Hartenstein. This could ultimately result in New York seriously entertain trading Randle.</p><p>But would the Knicks move him?</p><p>Randle went down with a shoulder injury in late January and ended up missing the remainder of the season. New York managed to earn the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and push the Indiana Pacers to seven games in the second round of the playoffs without him. It should also be noted that the Knicks had numerous other injuries and may very well have beaten the Pacers sans Randle had they been healthier.</p><p>Clearly, that means New York can legitimately contend in the East even without Randle’s services.</p><p>That doesn’t necessarily mean the Knicks are a better team without him, however.</p><p>Randle averaged 24 points, 9.2 rebounds and five assists over 35.4 minutes per game this season while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor, 31.1 percent from three-point range and 78.1 percent from the free-throw line. He posted a rather pedestrian .113 win shares per 48 minutes.</p><p>New York initially signed Randle in free agency back in July 2019. He signed an extension with the Knicks during the summer of 2021 and has one more year on his deal before having the ability to opt out next offseason.</p><p>Randle is eligible for a four-year, $181 million contract extension with New York, but the Knicks would be paying him $45 million annually under those circumstances. That would potentially inhibit the club from adding any other pieces moving forward, especially if New York also re-signs Anunoby.</p><p>As you can see, the Knicks have a dilemma on their hands. Randle has ingratiated himself to the fans in the Big Apple, and he has certainly helped put the Knicks back on the map after a couple of decades of near irrelevancy.</p><p>At the same time, retaining him on a huge deal could have dire consequences.</p><p>We’ll see what New York decides to do with Randle in the coming weeks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He was traded away from the Toronto Raptors due to the Raptors wanting to blow things up and he was on an expiring contract. He averaged 14.7 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, 2.1 assists per game, and he shot 48.9% from the field. Then, on defense, he averaged 1.4 steals per game and then 0.7 blocks per game. Wembanyama needs help and that starts on the perimeter. The Spurs have a lot of cap space as well, so they could offer Anunoby a hefty raise as well to come help Wembanyama get even better and help the Spurs get back on top of the West. Anunoby’s skillset on the perimeter would be a great complement and he could thrive in their system with how much the ball moves around in the perimeter and he would be the best player on defense for them.</p><h2>Where is the best fit for OG Anunoby?</h2><p>The best fit overall for OG Anunoby and where he will most likely end up is with the Philadelphia 76ers. He has mostly been in the Northeast with both the Raptors and the Knicks, so this would be an easy transition with the 76ers. The 76ers have a lot to fix with Joel Embiid still in his prime and Tyrese Maxey emerging as much as he has. Anunoby fits with what they want to do on the perimeter, especially on defense.
