Of the 390 total games he’s appeared in, Washington has started 320 contests. Since joining the Mavs via a trade during the 2023-24 season, Washington has started all but two of the games he’s played in. However, there is a chance that Washington will be asked to come off the bench during the 2025-26 campaign — something he’s willing to do if necessary.</p><p>“Just coming in and trying to win,” Washington <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1980318929487790109" rel="noopener">told reporters</a> after practice Monday. “Doing everything I can to be successful and to help my teammates to be in great positions to win. The media personality <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/charlotte-hornets/nba-rumors-pj-washington-fires-back-at-brittany-renner-200k-child-support-rumors">shares a child with P.J. Washington</a> and has requested that the<a href="https://www.tmz.com/2025/10/01/brittany-renner-increase-pj-washington-child-support-payments/" rel="noopener"> child support be increased </a>from $5,00 to “at least $35,000” a month, according to TMZ Sports.</p><p>Renner said they agreed on the $5,500 a month when they were living together in North Carolina, but since she moved to California with their son, the cost of living has increased, which has made the original agreement not applicable to her current situation.</p><p>The social media personality told the outlet that she “cannot afford the high cost of living given the current child support orders” and is “struggling to make ends meet.” She added that the NBA star who just signed a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-pj-washington-90-million-contract-extension" rel="noopener">4-year, $90 million contract extension with the Mavericks</a> is also around “less than 1/2 of the visitation time he is entitled to” which has made it a harder transition.</p><p>Renner wants their son’s lifestyle to be somewhat similar when he is with her, which she claims is not the case at the moment, noting that Washington’s life with his wife Alisah Chanel, whom he shares sons named Preston and Paxton, “has multiple luxury vehicles, constantly posts their designer shopping clothes, and boasts about luxury vacations.”</p><p>“They also constantly post their children wearing designer clothing,” Renner continued. “In contrast, I live in a humble Airbnb rental in West Hills and shop for [our son’s] clothes at Target.”</p><p>The social media personality says she “cannot provide [our son] a life anywhere similar to that of his father,” Renner wrote in the documents obtained by the outlet.</p><p>Washington married Alisah Chanel in 2023, and they welcomed Preston in 2022 and Paxton in February 2025. The trade was unpopular among fans, but the Mavs are ready for this next chapter. The Mavericks feature plenty of star-power on the roster, but depth is also of the utmost importance.</p><p>Smith most recently appeared at the NBA level during the 2023-24 campaign with the Brooklyn Nets. He’s enjoyed some respectable seasons during his time in the league, but his future in the NBA was uncertain after not playing in the league this past season.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/1-mavericks-player-in-danger-of-losing-starting-job-in-2025-26-training-camp">Mavericks are currently preparing for training camp</a> and the preseason, where Smith will attempt to earn a role on the NBA team. Mavs fans were frustrated last season following the shocking Luka Doncic trade. However, expectations are high for Anthony Davis in his first full season with Dallas. It is worth noting that Washington is ineligible to be traded during the 2025-26 campaign, as a six-month trade restriction <a href="https://x.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1963265748865896535" rel="noopener">will be implemented</a> once he officially signs the new deal, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.</p><p>Washington initially became eligible to sign the contract extension on Friday. Although a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dallas-pj-washington-contract-extension-update">Mavericks-Washington contract extension was expected</a>, it did not immediately come to fruition. However, it is now an agreed upon deal. It will become official soon barring any unforeseen circumstances.</p><p>So, is the $90 million contract over four years a good deal?</p><h2><b>PJ Washington agrees to contract extension with Mavericks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Mavs-PJ-Washington-smiling.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Washington gives the Mavericks valuable forward depth. One can argue that the Mavs’ current forward depth is fairly redundant, with players such as Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg and Naji Marshall on the roster. Washington’s versatility still makes him a quality fit for this roster, though.</p><p>PJ is capable of defending multiple positions. He can start or come off the bench, bringing value in each role. He has been a starter for the most part since joining Dallas, and the Mavs have multiple potential starting lineups they could implement during the upcoming campaign.</p><p>Regardless of his role, Washington will likely make a positive impact once again.</p><p>If the Mavericks were to decide to move on in the future and trade Washington, the contract should not steer teams away from potential interest. Of course, there is a chance Washington spends all four seasons in Dallas. Anything can happen in the future, though, and the contract will provide flexibility in the event that the Mavericks decide to make Washington available in trade talks following the 2025-26 campaign.</p><p>For Washington, the deal represents stability. Regardless of whether or not a trade happens in the future, he will earn respectable money in the prime of his career. The 27-year-old could also receive the opportunity to compete for a championship. Dallas features an intriguing roster and it would not be surprising to see the team make a serious postseason run within the next year or two.</p><h2><b>What Washington’s contract means for Mavs</b></h2><p>Are the Mavericks done making additions this offseason? Are they set to move forward with the roster as currently constructed?</p><p>Dallas has already had a busy offseason despite not necessarily making any jaw-dropping splashes in free agency or via trades. The Mavericks have now agreed to contract extensions with PJ Washington, Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-dallas-officially-signs-dante-exum">Mavs also re-signed Dante Exum</a> and signed D’Angelo Russell to boost their guard depth.</p><p>Of course, the big move was selecting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Mavericks shocked the NBA world by winning the NBA Draft lottery and ultimately selected the Duke basketball phenom in a franchise-changing move.</p><p>As things stand right now, it appears that signing Washington may be the last especially notable move of the offseason. He became eligible to receive this a four-year extension on August 29.</p><p>This new extension will begin next year, as Washington will earn $14.1 million during the 2025-26 season, the final year of his current deal. He is now under contract through the 2029-30 NBA season.</p><p>Washington, 27, was traded to the Mavericks during the 2023-24 season after spending the first four and a half years of his career with the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>Dallas acquired him and two second-round picks from Charlotte for Grant Williams, Seth Curry, and a 2027 first-round pick, which is protected if the pick ends up being first or second overall.</p><p>Since joining the Mavs, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-pj-washington-message-2024-25-season">Washington has been an essential part</a> of the organization’s success.</p><p>His contributions alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving helped elevate the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost in five games to the Boston Celtics.</p><p>Last season, Washington averaged 14.7 points and a career-high 7.8 rebounds in 57 games, 56 of which he started. The team also signed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-contract-option-119-million-deal">Irving to a three-year, $118 million contract</a>, as well as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/grading-dangelo-russell-mavericks-contract-2025-nba-free-agency">D’Angelo Russell to a two-year, $11.6 million deal</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-dallas-pj-washington-trade-disaster">Although he is not on the trade block</a> and this deal with Washington confirms his status as a key part of Dallas’ rotation, his future is very much up in the air.</p><p>The Mavericks giving Washington the full $90 million extension he was eligible for over the next four seasons ensures that he is still on a trade-friendly deal. The annual average value of this new contract is $22.5 million per season.</p><p>It is clear that GM Nico Harrison is willing to make big moves to compete for a championship right now, which is why he went out and got Davis instead of waiting for Doncic’s time to run the league.</p><p>With Davis, Irving, and now Flagg as the focal points of the roster, the Mavericks will be aggressive in the trade market to better their chances of raising a second banner, especially with superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James linked to the organization.</p><p>While he is ineligible to be traded right now during the 2025-26 season, this extension sets Washington up to eventually be moved. In order to win a championship soon, however, there is one specific player who could make the difference: PJ Washington.</p><p>The veteran forward was traded to the Mavericks before the deadline during the 2023-24 season. Washington — as well as Gafford who was acquired by Dallas before that deadline — helped the Mavs make a championship run. The Mavericks fell short in the NBA Finals, but it had become clear that Washington was going to play a significant role with the team.</p><p>Fast-forward to this summer, and the Mavericks have a big decision to make on Washington’s future in Dallas. Kevin Gray Jr. of DLLS Sports recently shared a reminder on X, formerly Twitter, that Washington <a href="https://x.com/KevinGraySports/status/1956386749099155520" rel="noopener">will become eligible</a> to sign a four-year, $90 million contract extension on August 29.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-dallas-pj-washington-trade-disaster">Should the Mavericks keep Washington</a>? He is set to enter unrestricted free agency following the 2025-26 campaign, so Dallas’ upcoming decision is especially important.</p><p>I’ve already made my opinion on the matter clear, as evidenced by the following post on X from July:</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">In 2024-25, Mavericks forward PJ Washington recorded the highest true shooting percentage (55.6%) of his career since 2021-22. He plays hard on both ends of the floor, is capable of leading the offense on some nights and his energy is contagious.</p><p>Does it make sense for the Mavericks to keep Washington, though?</p><h2><b>Mavericks-PJ Washington future amid upcoming contract decision</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/PJ-Washington-dives-for-the-ball-against-Pelicans.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Only Washington knows how he truly feels, but he seems to be content with Dallas. He was born in Kentucky but his family later moved to Frisco, Texas, so he was familiar with the area before he was traded to the Mavs. Dallas has certainly appreciated everything that Washington has brought to the team.</p><p>One could argue that the Mavericks would be better suited to save the money and pursue a bigger star in free agency or via trade down the road. The fact of the matter is that Dallas already features two superstars in Davis and Irving. Once Kyrie returns — he’s currently recovering from ACL surgery — the duo will be set to lead the way.</p><p>It may not be long before Flagg emerges as a star and helps to create a big three in Dallas. Other players such as Thompson, Lively and Gafford are extremely impactful players. The Mavs feature a deep roster as well, with Naji Marshall and Jaden Hardy among the key role players.</p><p>And that all leads back to Washington. No, he is not a superstar, but Washington is a starting-caliber player in the NBA. His intensity and athleticism make him one of the Mavs’ more reliable players. Even when Washington’s shot is off, he is still going to find a way to positively impact the team.</p><p>So, should the Mavericks give him a four-year, $90 million contract extension? The deal would keep him in Dallas until he is 30 years old.</p><p>Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game during the 2024-25 campaign. He also shot 45.3 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc. At 6’7″, Washington is capable of defending multiple positions as well.</p><p>There simply aren’t many players who are the perfect fit for almost any team in the NBA. Washington is one of those players, and the Mavericks would be risking a lot by letting him walk in free agency or trading him right now.</p><p>There are no guarantees at the moment, but the Mavericks should strongly consider giving PJ Washington the contract extension.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Dallas is expected to select Cooper Flagg first overall after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/2025-nba-draft-lottery-winners-losers-after-mavericks-no-1-pick">winning the NBA Draft Lottery</a>. Flagg and Washington play similar positions, and the Mavs need extra guard help amid Kyrie Irving’s injury, so the idea of a Washington trade has floated as NBA rumors begin to swirl.</p><p>However, the Mavericks need to keep Washington on the roster unless they receive a trade offer that is simply too good to turn down.</p><p>Why is Washington someone Dallas should be hesitant to trade? After all, the star players are Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving (once he returns from injury). Why not trade Washington to bolster the rest of the roster?</p><p>Chemistry and leadership are among the most important elements of finding success in any team sport. PJ Washington has emerged as the glue of this Mavericks roster. Irving is likely not going to return from his ACL recovery until January and Davis is still getting used to playing with his new team in Dallas.</p><p>The Mavericks need a leader on the floor, and PJ Washington could be the answer.</p><h2><b>PJ Washington is Mavericks’ glue guy</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/PJ-Washington-warms-up-before-Grizzlies-Mavericks-preseason-game.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Washington took a big step forward amid the team’s adversity this past season. As someone who covered the Mavs all season long, I can confirm that Washington played a pivotal role in keeping them together amid all of the ups and downs. Despite the Doncic trade and a plethora of injuries, Washington did everything he could to help the Mavericks maintain their composure.</p><p>“Just being more vocal,” Washington <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903448978605158881" rel="noopener">told reporters</a> in March of how he grew as a leader during the 2024-25 season. “Obviously, I’ve been on bad teams before. I know how it can get real fast. Just trying to keep everybody’s spirits up, just being the guy that is vocal each and every night, and just trying to lead by example as well.”</p><p>It goes beyond only the leadership and chemistry elements, though. Washington performed well across his 57 games played this past season, averaging 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. After all, there is a reason <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-pj-washington-warning-nba">Kyrie Irving called PJ Washington a “budding star”</a> in February.</p><p>“When he’s not in the lineup, we miss him out there,” Irving said of Washington following a Pelicans-Mavs game in February. “We’re able to go small… Being a playmaker, stretching out the opposing centers to the three-point line… We just need him to stay aggressive.</p><p>“He’s a budding star for our team. He’s showcasing that. His numbers have showcased that. So I think it’s time we start furthering that conversation about PJ Washington consistently doing these things.”</p><p>If Kyrie Irving calls you a “budding star,” then you are the real deal.</p><h2><b>Trading Washington isn’t the answer</b></h2><p>However, the talent and statistics are not the primary reason the Mavericks need to keep Washington. If he wasn’t the leader that he’s become, then capitalizing on Washington’s big season and trading him during the summer could make sense.</p><p>But the fact of the matter is that PJ Washington’s overall value is pivotal to Dallas. The Mavs’ chemistry will not be the same if the forward is traded. It doesn’t matter who they acquire in return. Chemistry is crucial, and Washington can lead the way in that department.</p><p>The Mavericks will likely make moves this offseason. In all reality, they probably should make a trade or two. The Mavs seem to be buying into the idea as well based on Washington’s comments.</p><p>There is no question that Dallas’ defense could be a force in the 2025-26 season. Spencer Dinwiddie and PJ Washington led Dallas to the win, as Dinwiddie scored 31 points and dropped seven assists while Washington recorded 27 points and four blocks. However, Washington had nine turnovers in the game.</p><p>After the game, Washington <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903295389198864436" rel="noopener">admitted that he was “pissed off” about his turnovers</a> despite otherwise having a respectable performance.</p><p>“I’m kind of really pissed off at myself,” Washington told reporters. “These nine turnovers, that’s terrible. I gotta be better… I wanted to just let y’all know that.”</p><p>It wasn’t all bad, though. As mentioned, the Mavs won and Washington played well on both ends of the floor aside from the turnovers.</p><p>Mavs head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903287752151437797" rel="noopener">shared his thoughts</a> on Washington’s two-way prowess following his balanced game.</p><p>“I thought he did a really good job on (Cade) Cunningham early… I thought PJ was really, really good,” Kidd said. “He had a spell there where he had a couple turnovers, but made a big three. Just understanding on to the next play mentality… He’s been great, we’re gonna need him to continue to keep playing at the level that he’s playing at right now.”</p><p>Kidd did mention that Cunningham scored 35 points. Still, the Mavericks head coach was impressed with Washington’s early defense on the Pistons star.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-mavs-fans-in-shambles-after-horrendous-meltdown-in-loss-to-pacers">Mavs have struggled in recent action</a>. However, the Mavericks will attempt to build off Friday’s win moving forward. Doing so will be a challenge, however, as Dallas is set to go on a four-game east coast road trip.</p><p>The Mavs will play the Nets in Brooklyn on Monday to begin the road trip. They will then play the New York Knicks on Tuesday in the second of a back-to-back.
