However, the Phoenix Suns also defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers by a final score of 123-112 on Friday. As a result, Phoenix remains the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference over the No. 11 seed Mavs despite both teams holding 34-37 records. The No. 10 seed, of course, represents the final NBA Play-In Tournament position.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-pj-washington-pissed-off-bittersweet-pistons">PJ Washington helped to lead the Mavs to their win against the Pistons</a>. After the game, Washington admitted to checking the standings “all the time” amid the Mavs’ current postseason situation.</p><p>“(Checking the standings) all the time, I mean, that’s all we can really pay attention to right now,” Washington <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903308076347728332" rel="noopener">told reporters</a>. “With that being said, we can only take it one game at a time. We’re fighting with (the Suns)… We can’t overlook anybody obviously right now. We got to go out there and fight every second of every game.”</p><p>The Mavs have dealt with adversity this season. They have experienced change with previous trades, while injuries have played an unfortunate role throughout the campaign. Players such as Kyrie Irving and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-anthony-davis-injury-update-pistons">Anthony Davis are among the injured Mavericks</a> at the moment.</p><p>PJ Washington has emerged as a leader amid the adversity, however. He is <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903448978605158881" rel="noopener">doing everything he can to keep his teammates’ “spirits up” amid the aforementioned adversity</a>.</p><p>“Just being more vocal… Obviously, I’ve been on bad teams before,” Washington said of how he has developed as a leader this season. “I know how it can get real fast. Just trying to keep everybody’s spirits up, just being the guy that is vocal each and every night and just trying to lead by example as well.”</p><p>The Mavericks will look to win a second consecutive game on Monday against the Brooklyn Nets. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-anthony-davis-injury-update-pistons">Mavs continue to deal with injuries</a>, but they were able to overcome the adversity and take care of business in Friday’s game. Spencer Dinwiddie and PJ Washington led Dallas to the win, as Dinwiddie scored 31 points and dropped seven assists while Washington recorded 27 points and four blocks. However, Washington had nine turnovers in the game.</p><p>After the game, Washington <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903295389198864436" rel="noopener">admitted that he was “pissed off” about his turnovers</a> despite otherwise having a respectable performance.</p><p>“I’m kind of really pissed off at myself,” Washington told reporters. “These nine turnovers, that’s terrible. I gotta be better… I wanted to just let y’all know that.”</p><p>It wasn’t all bad, though. As mentioned, the Mavs won and Washington played well on both ends of the floor aside from the turnovers.</p><p>Mavs head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903287752151437797" rel="noopener">shared his thoughts</a> on Washington’s two-way prowess following his balanced game.</p><p>“I thought he did a really good job on (Cade) Cunningham early… I thought PJ was really, really good,” Kidd said. “He had a spell there where he had a couple turnovers, but made a big three. Just understanding on to the next play mentality… He’s been great, we’re gonna need him to continue to keep playing at the level that he’s playing at right now.”</p><p>Kidd did mention that Cunningham scored 35 points. Still, the Mavericks head coach was impressed with Washington’s early defense on the Pistons star.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-mavs-fans-in-shambles-after-horrendous-meltdown-in-loss-to-pacers">Mavs have struggled in recent action</a>. However, the Mavericks will attempt to build off Friday’s win moving forward. Doing so will be a challenge, however, as Dallas is set to go on a four-game east coast road trip.</p><p>The Mavs will play the Nets in Brooklyn on Monday to begin the road trip. They will then play the New York Knicks on Tuesday in the second of a back-to-back. It was a back-and-forth contest for most of the affair, but Philadelphia began to take control late in the third quarter and did not look back. During the game, a fan shouted “fire Nico” loudly while PJ Washington was shooting a free throw, referencing Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison. Some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-dallas-fans-protest-luka-doncic-trade-anthony-davis-debut">Mavs fans’ disdain for the front office following the Luka Doncic trade</a> has been difficult to ignore, but Washington said the team is “<a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1901357377217069428" rel="noopener">sick and tired</a>” of hearing it at games.</p><p>“At the end of the day the trades happened, we understand we have a new team now,” Washington said. “All that ‘fire Nico’ stuff, we’re just sick and tired of hearing it. Washington <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2025-03-15_05PM.pdf" rel="noopener">is not listed</a> on the NBA injury report for the game.</p><p>Injuries continue to be a concern for the Mavs, however. In fact, 10 players are currently listed on the injury report for Sunday’s contest. It goes without saying, but Washington’s return will be of the utmost importance. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-espn-insider-details-dallas-potential-forfeiting-a-game-scenario-amid-injuries">Mavericks need all of the possible help they can get</a> right now.</p><p>When healthy, Washington has positively impacted the team. The forward has averaged 14 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks per outing so far in the 2024-25 season. Washington is also shooting the ball well, recording a 43.2 field goal percentage and 37.4 three-point shooting percentage up to this point.</p><p>He has dealt with injury trouble, something that has unfortunately been a common occurrence for most Mavericks players this year. Washington has played in 47 of the Mavs’ 68 games in 2024-25, starting 46 total contests.</p><p>The Mavericks will enter play with a 33-35 record. They are in 10th place in the Western Conference standings, holding a game and a half lead over the Phoenix Suns for the final NBA Play-In Tournament spot in the Western Conference. Despite their lackluster record and constant injury concerns, there is still a realistic chance of the Mavs reaching the play-in tournament.</p><p>Of course, whether or not they do in fact clinch a position in the tournament will likely depend on whether or not players such as Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford are able to return from their injuries.</p><p>For now, barring any setbacks, it does appear that PJ Washington will return for the Mavs’ game on Sunday against the 76ers.
