Nevertheless, the Chicago Bulls remain high on Williams and see him as a long-term piece amid the franchise’s pivot to a rebuild, signing him to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-chicagos-90-million-patrick-williams-plan-revealed">a five-year, $90 million deal</a> with the expectation that he’ll be fully healthy by the time the 2024-25 season rolls around.</p><p>However, now that training camp is nearly upon us, Williams has suffered a setback in his injury recovery that will be a point of concern among members of the Bulls franchise. Per Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic, Williams <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5786185/2024/09/23/zach-lavine-lonzo-ball-bulls-nba/" rel="noopener">experienced discomfort</a> in his foot which required “additional rest” in recent weeks amid the team’s minicamp in Miami.</p><p>The good news is that the concern surrounding Williams is more of a short-term one, as the Bulls are hoping that the additional rest would do the 23-year-old forward a world of good. But there is still good reason to be worried over Williams’ long-term health.</p><p>He last played for the Bulls in January, and he said back in July that he had been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-patrick-williams-drops-truth-on-injury-recovery-after-90-million-extension">progressing well in his recovery</a> (“the bone had healed and he was running and jumping without pain or swelling”, wrote Mayberry). It’s not a good sign whatsoever that two months later and there is once again lingering uncertainty surrounding the well-being of his foot.</p><p>Drafted with the fourth overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, it’s safe to say that Williams is yet to live up to his draft position. This is not to say that he is a bust, as he has been a solid, if unspectacular, two-way piece for the Bulls over the past four seasons.</p><p>But for Williams’ career to truly take off, he will need a clean bill of health. It remains to be seen if he could step up for the Bulls in the first year of a true rebuild, as availability is the best ability.</p><h2><b>Breakout opportunity is there for Patrick Williams in a Bulls rebuild</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Bulls__Patrick_Williams_dribbles_the_basketball.webp"></figure><p>For the past four seasons, Patrick Williams mostly faded into the background for the Bulls. The Bulls did not need him to be a go-to-guy, nor did he ever show that he was ready to take on a bigger offensive role. Williams seemed to be stuck in a chicken-or-egg situation. Did he not develop quickly because of his place in the team’s offensive hierarchy? Or did he not seize a bigger role due to him not developing quickly enough?</p><p>It’s difficult to pinpoint what Williams does best. He doesn’t have the most advanced handles, nor does he shoot the ball from deep at such a high level of efficiency and volume. Williams has shown that he can be very disruptive defensively and he has good size and length for a wing player, but he has yet to put his tools together on a consistent basis.</p><p>But now that DeMar DeRozan is gone and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-zach-lavine-vow-chicago-rumored-rift-trade-talks">Zach LaVine seems to be on his way out</a> of the team, the opportunity is there for Williams to break out, provided, of course, that he is healthy for next season. He needs to find a new level of motor, however, to make things work. There are times when he fades to the background often; he needs to be more proactive in making things happen, as the Bulls will need one of their young players to pop if they were to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-the-chicago-bulls-waited-so-long-to-rebuild-roster">build a contending team</a> in the not-so-distant future.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He has been rehabbing ever since, and in late June, it was reported that Williams expected to sign a five-year deal worth $90 million. Roughly two weeks later, the 22-year-old forward provided a positive update on his injury recovery.</p><p>“<a href="https://x.com/DarnellMayberry/status/1812239605921701940" rel="noopener">I’m pretty good</a>. I’m running and jumping now. No pain. No swelling. So it’s just a matter of getting my legs back under me,” Williams said when asked how he is physically, per Darnell Mayberry.</p><p>It is great to hear that Williams is on a promising path to recovery. He looks to be a vital piece of the Bulls’ short and long-term two-way attack.</p><p>Chicago drafted Patrick Williams with the fourth overall pick in the 2020 Draft. The Florida State product had a promising rookie year. He averaged 9.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and shot 39.1 percent on his three-pointers. Williams only played 17 games the following season due to injury struggles, but he returned strong during the 2022-23 season.</p><p>Williams averaged a career-high 10.2 points and shot 41.5 percent from range. The 6-foot-8 forward achieved similar production through his first 48 games with the Bulls in 2023-24 before his foot injury.</p><p>If he remains injury-free, Chicago expects Patrick Williams to make a notable improvement in 2023-24 and beyond.</p><h2><b>Bulls prepare for exciting 2023-24 season with young squad</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Bulls__Patrick_Williams_dribbles_the_basketball.webp"><figcaption>Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Chicago’s 2024-25 squad looks to be filled with youth, although the team may not have as much star power as it did its the previous three seasons. DeRozan was one of the most reliable scorers on the roster, averaging over 24.0 points or greater in each of his seasons in Chicago.</p><p>With DeRozan gone and Zach Lavine rumored to be on the move, the Bulls will look for production from others. Coby White is a prime candidate to lead Chicago’s offensive attack. The North Carolina product had a career year in 2023-24, amassing averages of 19.1 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game.</p><p>The Bulls have another intriguing talent joining their roster for the 2024 season: Matas Buzelis.</p><p>Buzelis, a native of the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, Illinois, was ESPN’s fifth-ranked prospect in the Class of 2023. He elected to play for the NBA’s G League Ignite team, where he averaged 14.3 points and 2.1 blocks. His three-point shooting took a notable dip when he transitioned to the Ignite. He shot just 26 percent from range in 2023-24 compared to his 43 percent mark in high school. It should be remembered that Williams is only 22 years old, and with plenty of room to grow, his contract could end up being a bargain if he makes a significant leap from his current level.</p><p>Williams has career averages of 9.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. However, he has shown at times what kind of player he could be when given a more prominent role on offense. In a December game against the Miami Heat during the 2023-24 season, Williams <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/202312160MIA.html" rel="noopener">shot 4-of-5 from deep</a> and scored 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists, albeit in a 118-116 losing effort.</p><p>Just a couple of weeks after that Bulls game, Williams had a starring role for Chicago once again after he top-scored for the team against the Indiana Pacers. He tallied 22 points on top of five rebounds, three assists and two steals, even though the team lost again 120-104.</p><p>Considering that Williams has never been one of the top options for the Bulls on offense, it’s difficult for him to really make huge strides with the team. But if the franchise continues on its current path and rebuild, Williams will have a chance to become one of the team’s go-to options. With rising star Coby White and promising guard Ayo Dosunmu already in toe, as well as 2024 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-2024-nba-draft-grade-for-matas-buzelis">NBA Draft pick Matas Buzelis</a>, Chicago actually has quite the interesting core that could be lethal when developed properly.</p><p>Now, as free agency begins, that means the Bulls will also have to decide on what they will do with their two star players in Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan.</p><p><a href="https://www.nbcsportschicago.com/nba/chicago-bulls/bulls-selection-of-matas-buzelis-continues-youth-movement/572333/" rel="noopener">Recent reports suggest</a> that DeRozan could be on his way out of Windy City, per KC Johnson of NBC Sports. DeRozan is an unrestricted free agent, so he could simply walk away from the team. There’s also the option of a sign-and-trade for him, but at the end of the day, he’s expected to leave.</p><p>“… The Bulls are open for business. And with growing buzz that DeMar DeRozan will be elsewhere next season, either via a sign-or-trade or simply walking in unrestricted free agency, the buzzword is no longer competitiveness,” Johnson explained.</p><p>LaVine’s situation is a bit trickier since he’s under contract until 2026-27. Not to mention that there’s a lot of money tied to him, with his deal paying him an average of $45 million over the next three years. Having said that, the Bulls might find it hard to move him at all.</p><p>“Chicago <a href="https://x.com/SiriusXMNBA/status/1807064510710055223" rel="noopener">has been trying to move</a> Zach LaVine forever. They can’t find any takers just to get off his contract. I don’t even think if they attached a first round pick teams would take him. So that impacts DeMar DeRozan, because you can’t sign DeRozan. Because you can’t sign DeRozan and keep LaVine, now you go into the luxury tax,” ESPN’s Bobby Marks said on SiriusXM NBA Radio.</p><p>It will certainly be quite the challenging offseason for the Bulls considering the situation they are in with DeRozan and  LaVine. They would probably want to get something in return for DeRozan instead of letting him just walk away. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-patrick-williams-dishes-on-upcoming-free-agency-after-season-ending-injury">Bulls’ fourth overall pick</a> in the 2020 NBA Draft is rumored to be the apple of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s eye.</p><p>The Thunder reportedly love the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5539973/2024/06/04/bulls-offseason-10-questions/?source=emp_shared_article" rel="noopener">6-foot-7, 215-pounder’s</a> size, via <i>The Athletic’s </i>Darnell Mayberry.</p><p>“Soon comes the moment of truth,” Mayberry said. “If the Bulls have seen enough of the Williams experiment, one team that has great interest, a league source said, is Oklahoma City. The Thunder need more size, and they have an army of draft picks that can sweeten the pot for the Bulls if a sign-and-trade emerges in July.”</p><p>Williams was a decent rotational piece for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-patrick-williams-to-undergo-season-ending-foot-surgery">Chicago before going down</a> with a season-ending foot injury. The 22-year-old registered 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game with a 44.3% shooting clip across 43 games.</p><p>However, that’s not quite enough production for a top-five pick. That’s why the Bulls are willing to bring him back, but only up to a certain price.</p><p>“A league source said the Bulls offered Williams a contract north of $16 million annually when the two sides were negotiating last fall,” Mayberry continued. “That will now be the number to beat for Williams, who is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. But because a season-ending foot injury in January limited Williams to 43 games, he didn’t get the chance to prove his value to be higher.”</p><p>Restricted free agents can sign an offer sheet with any team, but their original squad can retain them by matching that offer.</p><p>Will Williams stick it out in the Windy City, or will he head for greener pastures?</p><h2><b>Don’t be surprised if the Thunder miss out on Williams…for now</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Bulls-Patrick-Williams.jpg"><figcaption>© Gary A. That’s why Artūras Karnišovas, Chicago’s front office leader, may be inclined to run it back with Williams for at least one more year.</p><p>“How much the Bulls value Williams will now be fascinating to watch play out,” Mayberry said. “He was Karnišovas’ first draft selection, picking him fourth in 2020. The front office and coaching staff have supported, and at times defended, Williams through everything from ineffective play to injuries.”</p><p>This sometimes can be detrimental, as team executives can be in denial about their draft failures. However, Williams is still young, so he still has time to ascend.</p><p>The Florida State alum<a href="https://twitter.com/KCJHoop/status/1761451670431469858" rel="noopener"> also expressed interest</a> after his injury, via NBC Sports’ K.J. Johnson.</p><p>“Williams said he doesn’t know how his restricted free agency will play out but he’d welcome a return to the Bulls,” Johnson tweeted on February 24th.</p><p>However, if the Thunder offer $20 million or more per year, that could be too rich for the Bulls’ blood. Injuries have been a big problem all year long, and it is taking a toll on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-coby-whites-feelings-chicagos-trust-after-early-struggles" rel="noopener">depth of the Bulls</a>. Patrick Williams and Zach LaVine are both out for the season, and that creates <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-zach-lavines-critical-next-step-after-surgery-billy-donovan-update" rel="noopener">some issues for Chicago</a> in terms of lineups.</p><p>Chicago has a consistent starting five right now that is healthy, but depth is certainly a concern. The Bulls have to put out some unique lineups, and in terms of the sixth man, it is going to have to be a team effort. The Bulls tested out Terry Taylor <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4279815/terry-taylor" rel="noopener">a little bit</a> against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, but it will be a bit of an experiment throughout the remainder of the season.</p><p>“We will probably [use the power forward by committee] moving forward,” Billy Donovan told the media on Tuesday. “With Alex [Caruso], we’re just trying to manage him. It was probably unrealistic for him to be an entire game matchup on Zion [Williamson], and obviously we needed another bigger body and wanted to try early in the game to see what Terry [Taylor] would look like. I thought he did a good job while he was in [the game]. He played well and made some good plays on both ends of the floor. So, I thought for the limited time he played, he gave us pretty good minutes. But with where we’re at with Torrey [Craig] and Patrick [Williams], and the size – whether it’s playing Andre [Drummond] and ‘Vuc’ [Nikola Vucevic] together or sometimes using Terry [Taylor] – we feel like we have a little bit of flexibility to utilize both those guys.”</p><p>It’s going to be interesting to see what the Bulls are able to do down the stretch, and hopefully they can keep everyone healthy in the process.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Had the rest of the lottery not been made up a parade of players who haven’t lived up to their pre-draft hype — we’re talking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-james-wiseman-confusion-about-why-it-didnt-work-out-with-warriors-will-have-fans-rolling-eyes">guys like James Wiseman</a>, Isaac Okoro, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pistons-news-killian-hayes-released-after-no-trade-partner">Killian Hayes</a>, Jaylen Smith, and Kira Lewis Jr., among others — perhaps more would’ve been made of Chicago’s historic whiff on the Williams pick. Instead, now as Patrick Williams’ fourth-season with Chicago nears its end, we’re just left wondering, “What next?”</p><p>Even Patrick Williams himself doesn’t have the answer to that question.</p><p>“Williams said he doesn’t know how his restricted free agency will play out but <a href="https://twitter.com/KCJHoop/status/1761451670431469858">he’d welcome a return</a> to the Bulls,” according to KC Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago.</p><p>Whether or not the Bulls match any offers for Williams is still a mystery. I’m not even sure what kind of market there would be for a player who, through four years of his career, A) Has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-patrick-williams-to-undergo-season-ending-foot-surgery">been injury prone</a>, and B) Failed to show any kind of progress or growth.</p><p>In his one year at Florida State, Williams was named ACC Sixth Man of the Year. He averaged 9.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for a Seminoles squad that was likely on their way to a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament had it not been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Williams was raw, and projected to develop at a fast pace once he joined the NBA. Comparisons ranged anywhere between Marvin Williams, and for the optimists, Kawhi Leonard.</p><p>In 213 career games with the Bulls, Williams is averaging 9.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. His numbers, in 22 minutes per game at Florida State, are practically the same as his numbers in 28 minutes per game in the NBA.</p><p>With all of this said, Patrick Williams is still only 22 years old, and we’ve seen late-developing players come into their own in the past. He’s a 41 percent three-point shooter, and that’s an encouraging number even on low volume. A few days later, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-patrick-williams-miss-least-two-weeks-left-foot-injury" rel="noopener">Bulls revealed that Williams</a> was dealing with acute bone adema in his left foot and would be sidelined for at least the next two weeks. Coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-patrick-williams-crucial-injury-update-ahead-all-star-break" rel="noopener">Billy Donovan updated Williams’ status</a> entering the All-Star break, noting that while his discomfort was gone the best indicator of the 22-year-old’s potential return timeline would be how he reacted to increased physical activity.</p><p>“The hope is now that once we get into the tail end of the All-Star break that he can actually start doing some more things,” he said of Williams on February 14th, per Julia Poe of the <i><a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/02/14/chicago-bulls-patrick-williams-injury/" rel="noopener">Chicago Tribune</a>. </i>“That’s going to be the real big thing of how did he respond to that. What does that look like?”</p><p>There was subsequent optimism Williams might be active for Chicago’s first post All-Star game against Boston Celtics on Thursday night, but he remained out for the blowout loss, paving the way for Friday’s unfortunate news. Williams had re-entered Donovan’s starting lineup on January 20th upon LaVine going down again, his defensive versatility looming large at de facto power forward.</p><p>Expect Ayo Dosunmu to continue starting in his place. Alex Caruso might be the best perimeter defender in basketball and is comfortable guarding up and down the lineup, while Dosunmu is a clear plus defensively, too. But Williams’ season-ending injury leaves Chicago without a physical, athletic big wing to check the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, Julius Randle and Paolo Banchero,  a major void as the ninth-place Bulls hope to make noise in the play-in tournament and beyond come April.</p><p>As much as ownership and management want fans to believe Chicago really does have something to play for in 2023-24, Williams’ surgery means more the organization’s big-picture outlook. The Bulls opted against giving the former top-five pick the massive extension he wanted before the regular season tipped off, a prescient decision considering his lack of development before going under the knife.</p><p>The breakout campaign so many believe lies within Williams seems less likely than ever to come. His overall efficiency regressed a tick this season and his low three-point rate barely budged, more damning stasis for a young player in a limited offensive role who just hasn’t shown the self-creation or playmaking chops to sop up more on-ball opportunities. Williams shot an ugly <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/drives?Season=2023-24&amp;TeamID=1610612741&amp;dir=D&amp;sort=DRIVES" rel="noopener">38.0%</a> on drives this season, per NBA.com/stats, and his below-average usage rate barely moved even when he wasn’t on the floor with LaVine and DeMar DeRozan.</p><p>Williams will be a restricted free agent in July. Dreams of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-jaden-mcdaniels-agrees-to-5-year-136-million-extension" rel="noopener">Jaden McDaniels-like payday</a> vanished long before further testing confirmed he needed surgery. How should both Williams and the Bulls approach his free agency now that stardom seems further away than ever and he’s  still yet to make a sizable impact on winning basketball? Would he consider playing next season on a $12.9 million qualifying offer, hoping to prove he’s worthy of a big, lengthy contract as an unrestricted free agent in summer 2025?</p><p>Williams’ season ending prematurely is definitely a shot to Chicago’s lofty ambitions of postseason success this spring. There was some hope in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-coby-whites-feelings-chicagos-trust-after-early-struggles" rel="noopener">Chicago that he could</a> return after the All-Star break, but he is out again. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-billy-donovan-brutally-honest-readiness-julian-phillips-dalen-terry" rel="noopener">The Bulls are back</a> to game action on Thursday night as the Boston Celtics are in town.</p><p>The Bulls have battled injury trouble all season long, and they will have to survive a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4431687/patrick-williams" rel="noopener">little bit longer without</a> Patrick Williams. Some other notable injuries that the team is dealing with are Zach LaVine who is out for the season, and Torrey Craig is also out against the Celtics because of a right knee injury.</p><p>It is unclear when exactly Williams will return to the lineup for the Bulls, but it shouldn’t be too much longer. It doesn’t sound like it is a very serious injury, and he has had a few weeks to heal up now.</p><p>The Bulls certainly want Williams back as soon as possible as they have just 27 games left this season, and they are trying to make the playoffs. Chicago will need all hands on deck if they want to get into the postseason. Depth will be crucial down the stretch for this team.</p><p>With about a month and a half left in the regular season, the Bulls are currently 26-29 and they are in ninth place in the East. Williams has been out for a couple weeks because a left foot injury, and the team is hoping that he can return to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-darius-garland-questionable-vs-bulls-after-late-injury-report-addition" rel="noopener">court for the Bulls</a> after the All-Star break.</p><p>Chicago is now on the All-Star break as they played their final game on Wednesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Bulls played a good game and led for the majority of it, but the Cavaliers came out on top. The All-Star break is now underway for Chicago, and they are hoping to come out the other side a little bit more healthy.</p><p>“The hope is now that once we get into the tail end of the All-Star break that he can actually start <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/02/14/chicago-bulls-patrick-williams-injury/" rel="noopener">doing some more things</a>,” Bulls head coach Billy Donovan said in regards to Patrick Williams, according to an article from the <i>Chicago Tribune. </i>“That’s going to be the real big thing of how did he respond to that. Coming into their matchup with the Toronto Raptors, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-billy-donovan-honest-julian-phillips-current-role" rel="noopener">the Bulls were missing</a> Zach LaVine, Patrick Williams and Torrey Craig due to injuries, and the woes got worse as Dalen Terry went down in the loss. Terry was going hard toward the hoop and landed awkwardly on his ankle. He was down for a minute or two <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-how-chicagos-injury-woes-result-difficult-lineup-choices-billy-donovan" rel="noopener">as the whole Bulls</a> team came out onto the court to check on him.</p><p>This team can’t catch a break from the <a href="https://twitter.com/scottywhite_/status/1752523556603195552" rel="noopener">injury bug right now</a>. It was already hard to enough to get the right lineup out for the Bulls in this game because of injury trouble, and obviously losing Dalen Terry doesn’t help. It is still unclear how severe the injury is or how long Terry will be out for, but head coach Billy Donovan did provide an update after the game.</p><p>“From what I just gathered, the x-rays were negative, it’s a sprained ankle right now,” Billy Donovan said to the media after the game. “I don’t even know any of that (if Terry will travel with the Bulls to Wednesday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets) I just checked, and that’s all they said to me.”</p><p>Unfortunate news for the Bulls. They went on to lose Tuesday night’s game to the Raptors 118-107. The injuries are a big concern right now, and now it looks like Terry will be on that list for Wednesday’s game in Charlotte.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Patrick Williams will miss at least two weeks due to a left foot injury. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-patrick-williams-miss-least-two-weeks-left-foot-injury" rel="noopener">The Bulls are currently</a> 22-25 and the nine seed in the east, and they are making a push for the playoffs. Zach LaVine is currently <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/biggest-need-bulls-must-address-at-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">out for the Bulls</a> with an injury as well.</p><p>“Chicago Bulls forward Patrick Williams has been diagnosed with acute bone edema in his left foot,” A Bulls teams spokesperson said. “Williams will immediately begin a period of active rest and be reassessed in approximately two weeks.”</p><p>So, what does this mean for the Bulls going forward? This team is having a good year based off of preseason expectations, but they can’t seem to catch a break with the injuries. However, the good news for the Bulls is that the team has responded well to unfortunate injury news so far this season. There was a time when both Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic were out with injuries, and other players simply stepped up in their absence. They will have to do that again.</p><p>If you’re a Bulls fan, don’t be too concerned about this injury to Patrick Williams. It sounds like he won’t have to miss a ton of time, and this team has been in this boat before. Williams <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/4431687/patrick-williams" rel="noopener">is averaging around</a> 27 minutes per game and 10 PPG, so he has had good production this season. Other players will need to step up in his absence, but the Bulls have been good in that regard this season.</p><p>Obviously, having LaVine and Williams out at the same time isn’t ideal, but the Bulls have been through this before. Since then, missed just a game, which was the date with the Portland Trail Blazers are Moda Center last Sunday. On the season, Willams, a high-pick (first round, fourth overall) in the 2020 NBA Draft, is averaging 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per outing, while shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 39.9 percent from behind the arc.</p><p>With Williams on the sidelines, the Bulls can be expected to give a heavier load to carry on the court to Ayo Dosunmu as well as DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic. Chicago lost its last game to the Phoenix Suns by one point, but Caruso finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, and two assists. In addition, the 29-year-old showed why he is a Defensive Player of the Year contender.</p><p>Caruso commanded Chicago’s defense by clogging passing lanes, calling out the Suns’ offensive plays, and playing stifling individual defense. The veteran guard is garnering high praise for his leadership and toughness.</p><p>On the other hand, Patrick Williams is still trying to prove himself as a two-way threat. The young forward’s role has changed to backup after an underwhelming start to the season. Williams averages 5.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.</p><p>Still, Chicago needs Williams’ presence and size as they face other highly competitive teams.</p><p>The Pistons have one of the worst records in the NBA, but they are not pushovers. Cade Cunningham is leading the team in points and assists, while Jalen Duren averages an impressive double-double per game.</p><p>Detroit’s team is a like spring that can fiercely release at any moment. They ended up falling before they could get into the playoffs, but they still exceeded expectations. This year, the Bulls are trying to take things a step forward, and they are off to a less than ideal start so far. Through five games, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-bulls-prediction-odds-pick-watch-nba-in-season-tournament-game" rel="noopener">the Bulls are 2-3</a>, but it’s obviously still very early in the season and there are a lot of games left to be played. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-zach-lavine-injury-update-in-season-tournament-vs-nets" rel="noopener">If the Bulls can stay</a> healthy, they can make a similar run to last year, but they will need some guys to step up.</p><p>One player that head coach Billy Donovan is looking to step up in Patrick Williams. He is off to a bit of a shaky start to the season, and Donovan recently talked about his accountability.</p><p>“I think in talking to Patrick [Williams], I think he’d be the first one to tell you, it’s got to come from him, and I respect that,” Billy Donovan said on Friday before the Bulls <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/game/_/gameId/401584092" rel="noopener">took on the</a> Brooklyn Nets. “And I respect that he’s taken ownership that it’s got to come from within for him to do it. And I think he’s had opportunities. I think he needs to take advantage of those opportunities.”</p><p>So far this season, Patrick Williams is averaging 4.0 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.4 APG and he is shooting 26.7% form the field. Williams was a versatile defender who, if things broke out accordingly in his development, had a chance of developing into a dangerous scoring threat on the wing. After all, he had flashed a dangerous pull-up midrange jumper, which could end up being such a lethal go-to weapon for the Bulls forward.</p><p>However, Williams has yet to put it together for the Bulls, and entering Year 4, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-why-patrick-williams-will-shock-world-with-breakout-2023-24-nba-season" rel="noopener">plenty of concerns remain</a> surrounding his true impact for the team and how well he can contribute to winning in more of a support role alongside the Bulls’ star trio of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic. On Tuesday night, one such concern was Williams’ ability to contribute on the glass, which led to an early benching from head coach Billy Donovan.</p><p>Donovan then explained after the game that he had talked to Patrick Williams before the Bulls’ preseason game against the Toronto Raptors about being more aggressive on the boards, only for him to <a href="https://twitter.com/byjuliapoe/status/1714482411017273419" rel="noopener">witness something different</a> after the game had already tipped off.</p><p>“We had talked about it and I just didn’t like the way we came out. … We can’t run away from physicality,” the Bulls HC said, per Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune.</p><p>To Patrick Williams’ credit, he acknowledged that he may have been a bit lacking on his efforts on the boards, especially when compared to the efforts shown by his Bulls teammates such as Nikola Vucevic, Andre Drummond, and even Ayo Dosunmu. He then said that it’s all about <a href="https://twitter.com/byjuliapoe/status/1714491867490848929" rel="noopener">focusing more of his mentality</a> towards improving his workrate on the glass — he averaged just 4.0 boards a night last season, his worst average in a single season since entering the league.</p><p>“I think [rebounding well] is definitely something I can do. I don’t think it’s a secret that I can rebound the ball. It’s just more so going back and getting it.
