The 2024 first-round draft pick unexpectedly took on a lead scoring role as the Sixers’ big three — Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George — all dealt with injuries at the start of the season.</p><p>Although the 76ers have struggled all year long as a team, McCain thrived individually, averaging 15.3 points per game on .460% from the field and .383% from beyond the arc <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-jared-mccain-delivers-heartbreaking-injury-update-after-surgery">before suffering a season-ending torn meniscus injury</a>.</p><p>McCain actually won Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors for November after averaging 19.1 points in just 29.1 minutes per game. During a nine-game span in November, McCain led the 76ers in scoring in eight of those games, including a 34-point performance against the Eastern Conference’s best team in the Cleveland Cavaliers and a gutsy 27-point output in a 107-105 overtime victory over the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>While the season-ending injury is a tough one to deal with considering his hot start to the season, McCain details how both Embiid and George — both of whom were eventually shut down for the season — have been helpful as he rehabs from his injury.</p><p>“Yeah, I mean, I was just talking to them, they make sure my mental’s straight,” says McCain. “I think that’s the main thing with them is they know it can get rocky with just being alone sometimes.”</p><p>McCain mentions how you’re isolated from the team when you’re injured, so it’s appreciated when his 76ers teammates—including two of the biggest veterans on the squad—reach out to him to make sure he’s all good.</p><p>“You’re not with the team a lot and they’re taking care of me, just talking to me, making sure we’re all still good,” says McCain. “They know I’m going to attack rehab like I am and just making sure I am on the path with that.”</p><p>Embiid and George aren’t the only ones who have been helpful in helping McCain get through his injury as head coach Nick Nurse has also been supportive as the rookie looks to come back stronger and better during his second season.</p><p>“A lot of it just my mental, making sure my mental is good,” says McCain. “He’s just talked to me about making sure I’m good mentally and talking to everybody, making sure I’m around the team. Because it can get lonely. You’re away from the team a lot and especially in the beginning with the injury. We have quick conversations and just talking to the coach and staff, talking to my teammates and making sure I’m healthy.”</p><p>The 76ers will hope McCain and their star players, Embiid and George, will be healthy next season as they look to bounce back. Philadelphia entered the season with title expectations following the acquisition of George, a nine-time All-Star. However, injuries and a lack of cohesion has led to the Sixers having one of the worst records in the league this season at 23-52.</p><p>Philadelphia actually has a shot at the No. 1 pick with <a href="https://www.tankathon.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer">10.5% odds</a>, the fifth-best of any team in the NBA. That would give them an opportunity to land Duke phenom Cooper Flagg. Shams Charania of ESPN <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1901754500454457383" rel="noopener">first reported the news</a> before the Sixers released an official statement.</p><p>“Following consultations with specialists, as part of his treatment plan, Paul George has received injections in both his left adductor muscle and left knee,” the 76ers announced. “Following the procedure, George is medically unable to play and will be out for at least six weeks. Further updates on his recovery will be provided as appropriate.”</p><h2><b>Paul George out for rest of 2024-25 season</b></h2><p>George dealt with various injuries over the course of his first season with the 76ers, including a hyperextension in the same knee in the early goings of the season, a pinky finger sprain that forced him to play with a splint and groin issues that led to him losing the final month of his season. He fought hard to play through his many issues and even put his podcast on hold to focus more on a potential playoff push. But in the end, it was wise for the team to shut him down and prevent any further damage to his body.</p><p>In 41 games, George averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 43.0 percent from the field. He scored 30 points just thrice and Philly had a record of 15-26 in games he played in. Although he provided strong defense and served as a primary creator on offense, the first season of the four-year max contract PG signed this past offseason has been a major disappointment.</p><p>Currently, the 76ers have a record of 23-44 and are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-special-injury-exception-sign-former-celtics-pacers-forward" rel="noopener">relying on NBA roster exceptions to keep playing</a>. A decision is expected early next week.”</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/nba-news-76ers-raptors-tank-battle-massive-injury-report">Tyrese Maxey and Kyle Lowry also battling tough injuries</a> and Joel Embiid, Jared McCain and Eric Gordon out for the remainder of the season, the 76ers continue to play with shorthanded active rosters. George has missed four of the team’s last five games, including the three most recent, and was ruled out in the fourth quarter of the lone game he played in due to his groin injury.</p><h2><b>76ers’ Paul George meeting with doctors to address injuries </b></h2><p>Earlier this week, the 76ers announced that George is <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1899219197588123788" rel="noopener">“receiving treatment and continuing to consult with physicians”</a> and that he would be re-evaluated before their home game on Friday against the Indiana Pacers. Charania’s report suggests, at the very least, that George will not play in that game and will likely miss their back-to-back on Sunday (against the Dallas Mavericks) and Monday (against the Houston Rockets), which kicks off a six-game road trip.</p><p>George suffered a hyperextension in his left knee twice earlier in the season, delaying his debut with his new team. He also suffered an injury to the extensor tendon in his left pinky finger, which has required him to wear a splint on it, even during games.</p><p>At 22-43, the 76ers have fallen further out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are banged up and it’s looking like the Sixers could be without both of them again.</p><p>According to a team official, Maxey <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1898418551947424116" rel="noopener">did individual workouts</a> as the Sixers practiced on Saturday and is “unlikely” to play on Sunday against the Utah Jazz. George, who did not practice, will miss that game and Monday’s road game against the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>Nick Nurse said Maxey’s back injury “isn’t too bad” and that it’s not “nearly as serious as it certainly could have been. But they’re gonna want to make sure he’s moving and landing and jumping and being able to tolerate all that stuff.” Maxey’s finger injury on his right hand is still giving him problems, too. Nurse said it’s “not getting much better.”</p><p>As for George, Nurse thinks the Sixers will have some more information on his groin issue soon. PG, who is also dealing with a finger injury on his left hand, was listed as questionable for Philly’s last game but did not play.</p><h2><b>76ers continue to face several injuries to key players</b></h2><p>Although Joel Embiid’s season-ending knee problems are the biggest injury issues facing the 76ers, their constantly changing lineups have made continuity an impossibility this season.</p><p>In 62 games, they’ve had 39 different starting lineups. They have yet to see a five-man lineup play 75 minutes together. Every other team in the NBA has at least one such group and most have multiple five-man groupings that have exceeded 100 minutes.</p><p>“I’d certainly, probably, rather be doing something else,” Nurse said about reorganizing lineups and nearly starting from scratch game after game, “but it is what it is right now. I gotta get ’em organized. I think first and foremost, we gotta be able to execute some things at both ends of the floor, special situations, et cetera. That’s where we gotta spend a lot of time right now. It’s just what we gotta do.”</p><p>“I’m just trying to put ’em in positions where they can get some of that stuff on speed dial so they can concentrate on playing hard and making shots and making plays rather than constantly thinking about, ‘Where am I supposed to be on this particular situation?’ or, ‘What scheme are we in?’ or whatever,” Nurse continued. “We’ll just keep going over and over that stuff.”</p><p>Andre Drummond did not practice on Saturday due to an illness. Justin Edwards, who did participate in practice, said that his sprained left ankle is “better” and that he’s “taking it day by day.”</p><p>With Embiid, Jared McCain and Eric Gordon done for the season and Kyle Lowry seemingly not making any progress with his hip injury, it goes without saying that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-philly-certainly-concerned-paul-george-groin-injury-per-nick-nurse">76ers have their work cut out for them</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
