But plenty of Sixers players already have hit the court together in the months leading up to camp.</p><p>Rico Hines, one of the Sixers’ new assistant coaches, hosts pickup runs at the UCLA campus to give players the chance to get work in against fellow NBA players and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/exclusive-rico-hines-speaks-on-secret-ucla-runs-why-he-organizes-them-and-more" rel="noopener">improve their skills</a>. All-Stars, up-and-coming young studs, role players and rookies alike participate in the runs. The games go to seven points with shots worth only one point from anywhere on the court. Whoever scores the seventh point must then make a free throw to secure the win.</p><p>Hines stresses to the players that he <a href="https://youtu.be/-51C8ih39rg?si=MOGwiwdNzdEvM_Bs&amp;t=132" rel="noopener">wants them to play hard</a>. Obviously, no one plays as hard as they would in the playoffs, but they also don’t loaf around and exchange open dunks like it’s the All-Star Game. The runs are for real, full-speed basketball against high-level competition. Hines displays genuine appreciation for the players who come out to his gym to improve and wants to host a safe haven for those who match his passion for the game.</p><p>Paul Reed, Jaden Springer, De’Anthony Melton, Terquavion Smith, Mo Bamba and Ricky Council IV represented the Sixers across numerous days of scrimmages. For the purposes of examining how they perform, we’ll be looking at a few games from Hines’ YouTube page. The runs hold multiple games at a time but only one gets filmed up close, so we’re just going to focus on those.</p><p>The games, the dates they were posted online and the Sixers’ opponents are as follows:</p><ul><li>Game 1 was <a href="https://youtu.be/UEWVMKYRsJ0?si=QwQ22cOzQvCK4bo_&amp;t=732" rel="noopener">posted on August 20</a> and featured Springer, Reed, Melton, Smith and Council going up against a team headlined by Harrison Barnes, Thomas Bryant and Markquis Nowell.</li><li>Game 2 was <a href="https://youtu.be/UEWVMKYRsJ0?si=DapwO97k9OUzV8EG&amp;t=1636" rel="noopener">from the same day,</a> with the same Sixers facing off against a group of Toronto Raptors headlined by Pascal Siakam and Gradey Dick.</li><li>Game 3 was <a href="https://youtu.be/-51C8ih39rg?si=bbHVv82v5nPIwBvr&amp;t=241" rel="noopener">posted on August 23</a> and featured Springer, Reed, Siakam, Kevon Looney and Jabari Smith Jr. going up against a group of guys who could either be future teammates of James Harden or future Sixers: Norman Powell, Bones Hyland, Robert Covington, K.J. Martin and Brandon Boston Jr.</li><li>Game 4 was <a href="https://youtu.be/HREMBeKzvK4?si=Rl1wpn6k0Xt1-2fE&amp;t=481" rel="noopener">posted on September 1</a> and featured Reed, Bamba, Springer, Smith and Council going against a team with Barnes and two of his Sacramento Kings teammates: Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell.</li><li>Game 5 was <a href="https://youtu.be/Hy4qmtlWkSM?si=6eBjhRbrrdVPV2N1&amp;t=575" rel="noopener">posted on September 9</a> and featured Reed, Melton, Council and Detroit Pistons players Marcus Sasser and Stanley Umude going up against a team of five Pistons: Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, Jaden Ivey, Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren.</li><li>Game 6 was <a href="https://youtu.be/YcK4wCKOvpo?si=eP9oXz2SZclJAQvP&amp;t=278" rel="noopener">posted on September 16</a> and featured Springer, Melton, Smith, Bamba and Reed against a team with Looney, Barnes and Mitchell.</li><li>Game 7 was posted <a href="https://youtu.be/YcK4wCKOvpo?si=LJkyONXJHrAaKDr9&amp;t=449" rel="noopener">on the same day</a> and featured the same Sixers playing a team with Powell, Jarred Vanderbilt and old friend Charles Bassey.</li></ul><p>With what little footage we have of (some of) the Sixers playing basketball, let’s dig in.</p><h2><b>Paul Reed</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Sixers-Daryl-Morey-Paul-Reed.jpeg"></figure><p>With the backup center spot firmly his until further notice, Reed can feel more comfortable leaning into his unique style of play rather than away from it. But with a potential new role coming his way, he also has to expand his game.</p><p>Nick Nurse’s commitment to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-nick-nurse-two-way-game-plan-for-joel-embiid-will-thrill-fans" rel="noopener">trying out a Reed-Joel Embiid frontcourt</a> this season means that the evolution of Reed’s jump shot is extra important. His ability to shoot the deep ball has not translated from the G League, where he made 47 of his 110 attempts over 26 games, to the pros, where he has attempted only 20 three-pointers in 133 games (making three of them).</p><p>Reed spent plenty of time working on his ability to <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1647627598451679234?s=20" rel="noopener">shoot while moving off the catch</a> in workouts and in the Rico Hines runs. In a clip from Game 4, Reed beautifully converted his backpedal after screening into a smooth jumper that cut his team’s deficit to two. He showed confidence in letting it fly, even with a defender in close proximity. On one possession in Game 3, he even squared up to the hoop and drew a hard closeout, opening the lane for him to drive for a layup.</p><p>There’s plenty of typical Bball Paul activity to be seen — skying for rebounds, tipping missed shots to himself or his teammates, deflecting passes and throwing down easy two-hand dunks. In Game 7, he recorded a pair of steal-and-score sequences. The Sixers getting more hectic energy on the court is worth the downsides that occasionally come with it.</p><p>On top of playing in the Rico Hines runs for multiple days, Reed has practiced often in the Sixers’ practice facility and popped out at <a href="https://x.com/PickSwapMedia/status/1684175029410603009?s=20" rel="noopener">a local pro-am league</a>. He’s as ready for the season to start as anyone.</p><h2>Jaden Springer</h2><p>Springer can be the reason why the Sixers’ depth remains good despite losing numerous key bench players. The third-year guard could earn playing time under Nurse with his defensive capabilities and burgeoning offensive game.</p><p>Shooting from deep is the biggest thing Springer has to work on. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-jaden-springer-drops-confident-take-on-upcoming-first-year-with-nick-nurse" rel="noopener">feels good about the work</a> he has put in so far. His jumper mechanics don’t seem to have gotten much quicker, but he took (and made) plenty of threes during the runs. While the jumper remains a work in progress, what can Springer do to be of service to the Sixers’ offense this season? At the outset of the season, it’s to be a wrecking ball in the paint and score on the interior.</p><p>Springer’s basket to win Game 1 was a work of art. On the right baseline, he jabbed toward the sideline and darted to the paint. He protected the ball from a nearby help defender, sealed off his defender with his back and finished a reverse layup, jumping across the paint but putting enough juice and spin on the shot to get it to drop.</p><p>In Game 2, he gave Dick a “welcome to the league” moment of sorts by leaving him in the dust multiple times. He scored a layup with a trigger-step hesi on one possession, deployed a quick-crossover-into-drive move and dumped it off to Reed on another and then stopped on a dime to hit him with a behind-the-back dribble that nearly made Dick hit the deck and freed himself for a two-handed stuff. It’s not quite the same as Embiid dunking on Bamba’s head in 2018, but the Raptors rookie sure got a taste of what even lightly experienced NBA guys can do.</p><p>Springer guarded a variety of players. He hunkered down against the bigger and older Barnes, matched up with newbies like Dick and Nowell, and defended fellow young guards like Hyland and Mitchell. That’s the side of the ball where there are no doubts about what he can do. Addressing the ones that exist on the other end is the key for him this season.</p><h2>De’Anthony Melton</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Melton.jpg"></figure><p>Melton performed admirably as the Sixers’ sixth man/plug-in starter last season. The latter role will be increasingly important with James Harden’s status in limbo. In the Rico Hines runs, he shot off the bounce a bunch — something that he could be doing more of this season.</p><p>While shooting off the dribble and off screens is something Melton <i>can</i> do, it’s not often something he <i>does</i>. It’s completely unsurprising given that his role was to spot up for the Sixers’ stars and have them create for him in his debut year with Philly. But with one star potentially ready to go MIA and a new coach ready to make the offense less stagnant, Melton will likely increase his output in non-stationary threes.</p><p>Buckets from Games 1 and 6 showed Melton settling into a spot on the right wing, squaring up to the hoop and swishing a shot. Adding more comfort with shots like that can help the Sixers become more diverse on offense. Another focus for Melton going into the season should be on his shots at the rim. He looked much more comfortable shooting the ball than he did attacking the rim, which also indicates his splendid shooting abilities on top of his need for improvement elsewhere.</p><p>Melton showed his nose for rebounds by beating out Stewart to tip in a miss. He stayed active on defense by intercepting and deflecting a handful of passes. Even though he’s undersized for a versatile 3-and-D player, the Sixers will once again need him to be a do-it-all type of role player.</p><h2>Terquavion Smith</h2><p>The darling of the summer Sixers keeps working on his game as he looks to prove teams wrong for leaving him undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft.</p><p>Smith took the lead for the Sixers group in Game 7 with a double-between-the-legs move into a pull-up three. The ball went up often when the NC State product had it. In one game he played as the lone Sixer on his team, he scored three of his team’s five points off of jumpers.</p><p>While the buckets give Smith a name, it’s the little things that will earn him a chance with the Sixers. He made plays for others and stayed attentive on defense…for the most part. Again, this isn’t the environment where guys are gonna dig all the way in. Smith’s defense looked pretty good in Summer League, inspiring at least some confidence that he’ll turn out fine.</p><p>Smith allowed a bucket in Game 4 when he completely lost track of Mitchell, who cut right behind him and shot a layup that Reed tried to block but resulted in a goaltending call. His skinny frame hurt him here and there when he tried to corral his man. The effort was there just about every time, though, which is the most you can ask for in games like these from a young guard like him.</p><h2>Mo Bamba</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Sixers-Mo-Bamba-Joel-Embiid.jpeg"></figure><p>Bamba got some good work in with his new Sixers teammates ahead of training camp. For someone who has no familiarity with anyone else on the team — he and Embiid are friends, but he has yet to be on the same roster as anyone on the team — that can be pretty helpful, even if it’s just for a short pick-up game.</p><p>In his introductory Sixers presser, Bamba discussed the possibility of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-mo-bamba-details-how-he-and-joel-embiid-can-thrive-in-two-center-lineup" rel="noopener">playing in a two-big lineup</a> with Embiid. As one of the best shooters amongst seven-footers, he presents a seamless option as a stretch four. Playing alongside Reed, he looked the part. He also has the wherewithal to survey the whole floor when he’s spaced out, finding Reed on a cut with a crisp pass.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">New Sixers center Mo Bamba showing some flashes in the recent Rico Hines runs</p><p>Bamba played off Terquavion Smith really well and also looked good sharing the court with Bball Paul. His role with the Sixers shouldn’t be a huge one, though it’s tough not to get intrigued by what Nurse could do with a player of Bamba’s size and skills.</p><h2>Ricky Council IV</h2><p>Another undrafted rookie who dazzled for the summer Sixers, Council showed his bouncy athleticism with some nice dunks, including a double-clutch dunk in Game 3.</p><p>Council ran some pick-and-roll as the roller and handled the ball here and there. It was a nice mix of situations for the rookie, but he didn’t do much to stand out. One sequence from Game 1 should offer hope that Council can eventually be trusted more with the ball in his hands. He sized up his defender from the left wing, executd a left-to-right crossover and snapped a bounce pass to a cutting Smith, who converted a layup. Reading the floor that quickly and getting it right to Smith in the natural motion of his dribbling face-up was impressive.</p><p>Council getting any run he can get against NBA competition is good. Iron sharpens iron. While he is quite the athlete, he has to fine-tune his skill set before becoming playable for long stretches at the highest level.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With the Sixers in dire need of depth heading into the 2023-24 season, Reed is in for a huge season.</p><p>The Sixers have mostly asked the same of Reed as they have with all of their backup centers in recent years: defend, rebound, screen for guards and roll to the basket. Reed has shown that he is capable of more than that, notably in the 2020-21 G League season, where he won the league MVP award. Entering his second full season with the team, Philly is looking to unlock more of his well-rounded skill set.</p><p>The Sixers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-why-paul-reed-thought-philly-wouldnt-match-jazz-offer-sheet" rel="noopener">re-signed</a> Reed on a three-year deal worth $23 million this offseason. It’s not a massive contract but longer are they getting his services for cheap. He has to prove his worth now that he’s getting paid like a true rotation player. And the 24-year-old is ready to. One of the hardest workers on the team, Reed is excited for the season ahead.</p><p>At one of the Sixers’ back-to-school charity events, Reed admitted that he <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/sixers-paul-reed-out-the-mud-charity-event-20230918.html" rel="noopener">has high expectations for himself</a> and is already feeling, according to Keith Pompey of <i>The Philadelphia Inquirer</i>.</p><p>“I mean, of course I got higher expectations for myself,” Paul Reed said, via the <i>Inquirer</i>. “I feel like I’m only scratching the surface so far of what I’ve been able to showcase in the NBA. I have so much more to prove and show with my game. …  And I feel like this season I’m going to get an opportunity to do more, to play more and that’s what signing that contract kind of does for me: The extra cushion to make a couple of mistakes and keep playing. It’s showing that they trust me to be a player.”</p><p>Nick Nurse, the Sixers’ new head coach, is already committing to new responsibilities for Reed, including the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-nick-nurse-looking-to-put-paul-reed-on-pascal-siakam-development-track" rel="noopener">development of his all-around game</a> and minutes playing alongside Joel Embiid instead of just as his backup. The Sixers big man has worked on his game all summer long as he prepares to return to Philly, which he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-why-paul-reed-thought-philly-wouldnt-match-jazz-offer-sheet" rel="noopener">did not think would be the plan</a> after signing an offer sheet with the Utah Jazz.</p><p>The Sixers ended up matching the offer, keeping Reed in town as Nick Nurse takes over as head coach. The former Toronto Raptors head coach should be able to get more out of Reed, an athletic, energetic big that has untapped potential in areas other than rolling to the rim, defending and rebounding.</p><p>At the event, Reed offered some insight into what Nurse has in store for his development. He said that Nurse wants to mold him into <a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/lists/sixers-want-to-mold-paul-reed-into-a-pascal-siakam-type-of-player/" rel="noopener">a more well-rounded player</a>, according to Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire. He name-dropped Pascal Siakam, Nurse’s star forward with Toronto, as the model for what Nurse wants to see out of Reed.</p><p>“I’ve talked to him plenty of times and it’s always been kind of the same kind of idea,” Reed said of his conversations with his new head coach, via Sixers Wire. “He talked about molding me into a Pascal Siakam-type player. Somebody who can kind of do it all. Shoot the ball, drive, pass, but right now, it’s all about focusing on my shot mechanics. That’s the start. That’s where it starts at.”</p><p>Siakam has grown into a very good player with the Raptors, making steady strides from bench player to key starter to All-Star and perennial All-NBA candidate. At 6-foot-9, Siakam can initiate the offense, score from a variety of locations and handle the ball on top of guarding multiple defenders.</p><p>Paul Reed being able to operate more comfortably on the perimeter would allow him to fit more cleanly next to Joel Embiid. His versatile defense and rebounding give him skills that work well next to Embiid when the Sixers want to prioritize defense and size. Shooting is the main skill that would allow him to complement the reigning MVP. His three-point percentage of 43.6 percent from the G League has not followed him to the NBA. But he’s working on it and sounds like he’s happy with his progress.</p><p>“Whenever I’m in Philly, the whole coaching staff, we’re all on the same page about what I need to do to get better,“ Reed said, via Sixers Wire. “So every day I come in the gym, we’re all focusing on the small details in my shot.” He added that he’s working on altering his shot mechanics and that he’s “getting more and more comfortable every day” with the new jumper.</p><p>Reed is confident that the 2023-24 season can be a true breakout campaign. Philadelphia 76ers guard James Harden remains at the center of trade speculation, but his teammate Paul Reed is taking time to share <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/sixers/james-harden-sixers-paul-reed-20230725.html" rel="noopener">how he feels</a> about the veteran. With fans maybe still nursing their postseason heartbreak, some Sixers’ comradery should at least put a small smile on their faces.</p><p>“James Harden, that’s like my big brother, one of the coolest vets I know,” Reed told the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey Tuesday. “I hope he comes back. But I understand business is business. And sometimes you got to do what you got to do.”</p><p>Harden accepted his $35.6 million player option right before free agency for the purpose of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-james-hardens-trade-demand-confuses-tracy-mcgrady" rel="noopener">seeking a trade</a>. Though, nothing has come of it yet. New head coach Nick Nurse is coming in to try to stabilize this group and help them reach their full potential. It looked as though he was going to part ways for good with the Sixers in the offseason when he signed a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-paul-reed-inks-23-million-offer-sheet-with-utah" rel="noopener">three-year, $23 million offer sheet</a> with the Utah Jazz, but Philly was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-philly-makes-critical-paul-reed-decision-after-jazz-offer" rel="noopener">not going to let him go</a> to Salt Lake City.</p><p>The Sixers countered and matched the offer of the Jazz to the restricted free agent Reed to get back to the City of Brotherly Love.</p><p>Reed thought that his time with the Sixers was over and that Philadelphia <a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/lists/sixers-want-to-mold-paul-reed-into-a-pascal-siakam-type-of-player/" rel="noopener">wouldn’t even try to match</a> the Jazz’s offer especially when he saw other big men get deals of their own with Philly.</p><p>Via Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire:</p><p><i>“I didn’t know what was gonna happen to be honest. I was a restricted free agent, so they had an opportunity to match. Then I seen they signed Trez (Montrezl Harrell) and (Mo) Bamba, my agent was like, it’s probably not likely that they match, but when they matched, I was real surprised.”</i></p><p>Apart from Harrell and Bamba, the Sixers also signed former Gonzaga Bulldogs big man Filip Petrusev to a two-year deal. The restricted free agent center was<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-paul-reed-inks-23-million-offer-sheet-with-utah" rel="noopener"> offered</a> a 3-year, $23 million contract by the Utah Jazz. Since Reed is an RFA, the Sixers had the option of matching the offer given by the Jazz. Now, they’ve <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1678231564650713090" rel="noopener">officially decided to match</a> the Utah offer, effectively keeping the backup big man around, per Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>“The 76ers are matching Paul Reed’s three-year, $23M offer sheet with the Jazz, sources tell ESPN. Per sheet’s terms, Sixers must guarantee last two years of Reed’s deal if they win the opening round of playoffs this season.”</p><p>The second sentence is interesting to point out. That first-round win clause is actually a clause that the Jazz put in their offer sheet for Reed. Since the big man is an RFA, the Sixers had to match the contract offer to keep him… including all of the clauses. This is a big win for Reed, who effectively gets a chance to get guaranteed money from his team if they get out of the first round.</p><p>The Sixers had plenty of contingency plans if they let Reed walk. They signed ex-Lakers big Mo Bamba and retained Montrezl Harrell’s services. However, Reed was always in their future plans,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-letting-paul-reed-leave-jazz-free-agency-massive-mistake" rel="noopener"> and for good reason</a>. The big man is the quintessential backup big: he’s able to soak valuable minutes while Embiid rests while providing quality defense and rebounding.</p><p>Now, Reed returns to Sixers squad that still has plenty of questions to answer in the offseason. James Harden’s trade request still looms over everyone’s heads. There’s also the matter of a potential trade for Damian Lillard. The trade also put the Sixers below the luxury tax threshold, allowing them to dodge that tax as well as the repeat offender tax.</p><p>Given the dubious return, there was a lot of speculation that the primary reason the Sixers made that trade was just to save money. When he addressed the media about the Sixers’ deadline activity, president of basketball operations Daryl Morey shot down that line of thinking by stating that they viewed McDaniels as a “hidden gem” and someone who can meaningfully contribute in the playoffs. But he also said that Philly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-daryl-morey-bold-take-philly-title-chances-following-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">took the tax aspect into consideration</a>.</p><p>“I think as part of my job, I have to look at the bigger picture,” Morey said in February. “We have a lot of guys we’re gonna re-sign and the moves we did both improve the team now and make it easier to keep this team together going forward.”</p><p>For a team with so many free agents, ducking the tax made sense — saving money will make it easier to pay up to retain key players. Cut to 2023 free agency and the Sixers have yet to sign a free agent that isn’t on a minimum deal (save for James Harden, who did the work himself by exercising his player option). Three key bench players — McDaniels, Georges Niang and Shake Milton — have all signed multi-year deals elsewhere. A fourth one may be gone soon, too, if the Sixers don’t act.</p><h2><b>Paul Reed’s Jazz offer sheet</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Jazz-news-Sixers-fan-favorite-Paul-Reed-inks-23-million-offer-sheet-with-Utah.jpeg"></figure><p>Paul Reed, the backup center who proved to be a key player in the Sixers’ rotation last season and is just 24 years old, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-paul-reed-inks-23-million-offer-sheet-with-utah" rel="noopener">signed an offer sheet</a> with the Utah Jazz worth $23 million over three seasons. The Sixers can match the offer and keep him, giving them way more power than they did with their other free agents. Letting Reed go would be a colossal misstep that doesn’t align with the stated goal of being more frugal at the deadline in order to spend money in the offseason.</p><p>BBall Paul is a sound backup for Joel Embiid — the best he has ever had, bar none. He has familiarity with the Sixers, has developed each season and contributes in multiple ways on both sides of the ball. He’s a hound for rebounds that shows versatility on both ends of the floor. Even if the vision of him playing as a roamer alongside Embiid doesn’t come to fruition, he helps the team function well when the MVP rests.</p><p>Fouling in bunches and the lack of shooting range (at least in the NBA) are legitimate flaws Reed can work on, but he checks off the main boxes that make for a good backup big man. A less important but still very tangible reason that the Sixers are better off keeping Reed is that Philadelphia absolutely loves him. He’s the type of gritty role player <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-what-makes-philly-fans-unique-according-rights-to-ricky-sanchez-host" rel="noopener">the fan base often gravitates toward</a>.</p><p>Reed had the freedom to peruse free agency but under the guise that the Sixers could match any offer he signs. Utah — despite already rostering an impressive young center in Walker Kessler and other centers/big forwards like Lauri Markkanen, Kelly Olynyk, John Collins and rookie Taylor Hendricks — is interested in bringing Reed into its rebuilding squad. Philly choosing to keep Reed would go against the ethos of their offseason to this point: maintaining future flexibility, namely with cap space.</p><h2><b>Sixers’ cap situation</b></h2><p>The Sixers’ prioritization of cap space can be seen numerous times in their offseason: keeping Tobias Harris’ expiring contract instead of trading for players with longer deals, holding off on a Tyrese Maxey extension, only signing free agents on one-year minimums and letting the more pricey free agents leave despite having the cap exceptions to keep at least a few of them.</p><p>Morey and the front office keeping the Sixers’ books as open as possible speaks to his big-picture focus. Having Reed on the books for the next three years does eat into flexibility and pushes the Sixers further into the tax, which they were already approaching anyway. The contract shouldn’t be hard to move given its length and annual worth of just under $8 million, but it would cut into the Sixers’ future flexibility ever so slightly.</p><p>The Jazz, in a move that can be safely assumed to be partly a jab from former Boston Celtic/Utah lead executive Danny Ainge, trolled the Sixers HARD by including a clause that only guarantees the final two seasons of Reed’s deal if the team he’s on makes the conference semifinals in his first season. It’s a move that all but ensures the Sixers will be on the hook for all three years but not Utah. Forcing the Sixers into a game of chicken is one of the most unique chapters in the Philly-Boston rivalry.</p><p>Opting not to orchestrate a sign-and-trade of some kind with Reed leaves the Sixers with only two options: match the Jazz’s offer or don’t. Signs that point to a refusal to match Reed’s deal include the current roster makeup, the cap space Philly would lose with Reed’s deal and Morey’s history of thriftiness when it comes to backup bigs.</p><h2><b>Keep four centers?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Sixers-Joel-Embiid-Daryl-Morey.jpeg"></figure><p>Morey previously said that the backup center is <a href="https://sixerswire.usatoday.com/2023/02/27/daryl-morey-addresses-not-going-after-backup-center-for-sixers-at-deadline/" rel="noopener">not his highest priority</a> in team building. Over the years, he has stashed the position with a veteran on the cheapest contract possible. Keeping Reed would again leave the Sixers with three centers behind Embiid, joining Mo Bamba and Montrezl Harrell on the depth chart. Having that level of roster glut behind Embiid is tough to justify, especially given their need for wings.</p><p>The best solution was to simply not sign the first two guys before knowing Reed’s decision, though that is easier said than done given Reed’s desire to test the market. With hindsight, the right way to play this situation was to take the flyer on Bamba, whose length and three-point shooting offers a different set of skills, and move on from Harrell, whom Reed beat out in the rotation in the games that really mattered. Philly has backed itself into a corner and, through the point of view laid out by their offseason strategy to this point, losing another important player for nothing seems like the most logical way out.</p><p>Is Reed bound to improve in a way that drastically makes the Sixers’ title chances better? No. Is it in the realm of possibility for Bamba to give Philly a similar production to Reed at a fraction of the price? Yes. But this is still an easy decision to make. It’s only roughly $8 million for a young player who has proven to be valuable in the postseason and is <a href="https://twitter.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1574404018088148997?s=20" rel="noopener">one of the team’s hardest workers</a>.</p><p>Not matching the offer for Reed would allow one of the Sixers’ key players to leave for nothing. Philly has bled value over the years by allowing good players, especially young ones, leave for nothing. Their eye for talent is legitimately good, but the follow-through on finding these diamonds in the rough, however small they may be, falls shorts far too often.</p><p>The buck has to stop with Paul Reed. The Sixers will now have until just before midnight on Sunday to match the contract, or else Reed will be the newest <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-utah-waives-former-first-round-pick" rel="noopener">member of the Jazz</a> on Monday.</p><p>The offer sheet does contain one interesting caveat, Woj reports.</p><p>“One term of the offer sheet contains a unique twist: The first season of the contract is fully guaranteed, while the following two seasons become guaranteed if Reed’s team advances to the conference semifinals in 2023-24,” he wrote on Saturday.</p><p>“Given where the two franchises stand, it is more likely the Sixers would have to guarantee the $15.7 million total for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons than the Jazz.”</p><p>If Philadelphia does choose to match the offer sheet, it will put them above the $165 million luxury tax, incurring them an additional $14 million in luxury tax penalties, per Woj. If Reed does end up remaining in Pennsylvania, he will have veto power on trades for one year.</p><p>He played 69 games for the Sixers last season, including four starts. They have interviewed tons of players and coaches/executives, including at their live shows. With Joel Embiid sitting out, the Sixers snapped a two-game losing streak behind another great game from Tyrese Maxey and one of the best performances ever from Paul Reed.</p><p>Reed was fantastic, tallying 16 points, a career-best 14 rebounds and two blocks on 7-10 shooting. His scoring helped a mostly bench lineup go up by double digits in the second quarter and he also rebounded quite well, collecting some offensive boards and contested ones on the other end. His shooting from deep and from the foul line powered his scoring in this one.</p><p><b>Tyrese Maxey: 27 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 10-17 FG shooting</b></p><p>Back in the starting lineup (though not in the conditions many had hoped for), Maxey got going in a hurry. Defensively, he more than held his own and made some great plays (like a block on Adebayo and a forced turnover on Butler) while taking and making good shots.</p><p><b>Paul Reed: 16 points, 14 rebounds, 0 assists, 2 blocks, 7-10 FG shooting</b></p><p>Single-game plus/minus doesn’t always tell the story of a player’s game. For Reed, who was a +26, it definitely did. Although the five-out look led to some great offense, Reed’s physicality near the bucket made him indispensable for the Sixers. He helped correct the course as Miami threatened to make the game close in the third quarter, set a new career high in rebounds in one game and finished lots of tough looks.</p><h2>Heat player notes:</h2><p><b>Jimmy Butler: 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 6-8 FG shooting</b></p><p>Butler, just as he did on Monday, came out aggressive on both ends of the floor and got started with a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays. He wasn’t able to put his imprint on the game in the rest of the first half and didn’t look to score as much as the Heat needed him to. Several of his teammates shot more than him despite his ability to score and he didn’t make up for it by being a playmaking machine.</p><p><b>Bam Adebayo: 20 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 8-12 FG shooting</b></p><p>Adebayo left his frigid shooting back in Philadelphia, scoring with great efficiency in the paint and showing a nice-looking jumper. But he left a lot to be desired defensively, as multiple Sixers found ways to score on him.</p><h2>Game notes:</h2><p><b>1st half</b></p><p>It was clear that the Sixers needed to change some stuff up after their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/instant-breakdown-sixers-heat-joel-embiid-jimmy-butler-tyrese-maxey" rel="noopener">disappointing loss</a> to the Heat on Monday. Ultimately, they were forced to do so out of necessity with Embiid sitting out. P.J. Tucker occupied the starting center spot in his place. He guarded Adebayo while Harris matched up with Butler.</p><p>Maxey got going early on with a pair of triples while Harris and Harden helped out with some tough layups, shaking off the tough defense from Adebayo to score. Danuel House Jr. was one of Doc Rivers’ first subs of the night amid Georges Niang’s struggles. He defended Butler pretty well on a few possessions, scored a layup in traffic and drew a shooting foul. Both offenses got off to very hot starts, shooting over 60 percent through the first quarter. No defense at the point of attack, just vibes (and many, many buckets).</p><p>The Sixers trailed for most of the first quarter and took the lead in the second but the game remained close. The benches got in on the hot scoring as Shake Milton and Max Strus hit some shots for their teams. Harden got going in the scoring department in the second quarter. His work and some defense-to-offense sequences started by takeaways from Jalen McDaniels and De’Anthony Melton helped Philly go on a 12-0 run.</p><p>The Heat’s offense entered a drought, going without a field goal for over four minutes. The Sixers effectively switched everything on defense and rebounded well (thanks largely to Paul Reed’s energy on the glass), forbidding them from easy opportunities to snatch points here and there. In one heads-up play on a loose ball, Reed <a href="https://twitter.com/PhillyTradesman/status/1631105638536232960?s=20" rel="noopener">tapped the ball with his foot</a> to keep Butler from picking it up and going in for an uncontested layup.</p><p>Miami eventually broke its seal on the hoop but the Sixers were still moving and grooving. They swung the ball around with gusto, got out in the fast break and hit shot after shot. They made 11 of their 21 downtown attempts and went up 71-53 at the half.</p><p><b>2nd half</b></p><p>Harden set up Tucker and Harris for easy buckets as the Sixers kept their foot on the gas by running in transition. Harris did a very nice job staying in front of Butler and Miami’s offense couldn’t keep up despite some scores from Herro and Adebayo. Philly simply found itself in a wonderful harmony on both sides of the floor but it didn’t last forever.</p><p>The Heat began a big run with three consecutive close shots, punishing the Sixers’ switches to get easier looks. They started showing more extra bodies on the perimeter with some quick blitzes, and it helped slow down Philly’s offense. A jumper from House snapped a 10-0 Miami run and the size from Reed took away Miami’s size advantage.</p><p>Some highlight-reel buckets from Maxey (an acrobatic layup where he barely got the ball onto the rim and a step-back triple) kicked the Sixers into gear again. They went up by as much as 25 points in the fourth quarter. Butler didn’t play a minute in the final frame as Philly kicked its feet up and cruised the homestretch. Milton and Maxey provided some fireworks with long threes.</p><h2>Random thoughts:</h2><ul><li>Alaa Abdelnaby mentioned Love’s physical transformation from his days at UCLA on the broadcast. Being drafted by the Sixers with the 58th overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft meant an uphill battle toward playing time, especially on a team built around a superstar center.</p><p>“You know how it is on 2K: you get drafted, now you can get minutes immediately,” Reed said. “So I thought it was gonna be like that — that I was gonna get drafted, get minutes immediately and automatically have a role. But it was nothing like that. It was like the opposite.”</p><p>Reed spent most of his rookie year and a big chunk of his second year in the G League, winning the league’s MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. He averaged 22.3 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 58.8 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from deep on 3.6 attempts across 15 games.</p><p>“It was a good experience,” Reed said of his time with the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats. “And last year, it was more so tuning up the stuff I needed to work on to get minutes in the NBA for this team.”</p><p>After playing just 479 minutes over the course of his first two seasons (before taking a more regular role in the postseason of his second year), Reed has already logged 261 minutes this season. He has appeared in 23 of the Sixers’ 26 games, though his playing time still varies. He averages 11.3 minutes, 3.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.</p><p>Reed’s habitual fouling can often limit his playing time but he still makes an impact on the floor, particularly on defense. He stays active — racking up steals, blocking shots, gobbling up boards and keeping his motor running always. Almost all of his shot attempts come from the paint but he continues working on his jumper at practices and before games.</p><p>Above all else, Reed is looking to help the Sixers achieve their ultimate goal of an NBA championship. He is doing his best to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-paul-reed-reveals-his-mindset-amid-battle-with-montrezl-harrell-for-backup-center-role">stay ready</a> while Doc Rivers oscillates between him and Montrezl Harrell as the team’s backup big men on a game-by-game basis. “I’m just focused on doing what the team needs me to do,” Reed added. “which is rebound, defend, set good screens and roll, get my teammates open, be a good passer. The team has gone through tons of options throughout the years, coming up with mixed results for the player that steps in behind Joel Embiid. Paul Reed has given the Sixers a young, defensive-minded option behind the superstar but his path to playing time has always featured an obstacle.</p><p>Despite the potential Reed shows, Doc Rivers has shown a profound preference for veterans when Embiid isn’t on the court. After fighting for minutes with DeAndre Jordan last season, Reed is in the same position. This time, it’s between him and Montrezl Harrell.</p><p>Reed <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/reedpa01/gamelog/2023">has played more minutes recently</a> but he still has not secured a surefire spot in the Sixers’ rotation. “At first, it was a little challenging,” Reed said when asked how he prepares for games when he’s not sure he’ll play. “But I kinda prepared my mind mentally to be able to handle it and it’s been working for me.”</p><p>Harrell, when asked about the situation during the preseason, said that both he and Reed are there to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-doc-rivers-fluid-plan-for-using-montrezl-harrell-paul-reed-as-joel-embiids-backups">provide energy down low</a> for the Sixers bench. Now, they may have too many. Doc Rivers has both Paul Reed and Montrezl Harrell at his disposal, giving the Sixers a ferocious presence off the bench.</p><p>Reed has played more than Harrell this preseason (both in terms of total minutes and minutes per game) but Harrell played a lot in the Sixers’ final preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets. Harrell’s 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks helped Philly beat his former team by a score of 99-94 to remain unbeaten in the exhibition games.</p><p>Doc Rivers said that the backup center spot will be “fluid” as the season rolls along, saying that Harrell and Reed will both get their minutes. “There will be times when one will play, there will be times when they both will play and one will play the four at times with Joel. So, it’s good to have them both,” he said. His ability to get downhill and power through the defense and to the hoop gives the Sixers an offensive boost. Meanwhile, Reed is close to a traditional lob threat and a strong, versatile defender. They come together with their different skill sets with the same goal: to provide quality minutes while Embiid rests.</p><p>“We just go out and do what we’re supposed to do, man,” Harrell said. “We’re just trying to keep the energy at a high level when big dog [comes] off the floor. We try to make sure that the play stays consistently, make sure we’re boxing out, rebounding the ball, making shots difficult on the defensive end of the floor and that we’re finishing for those guys at the offensive end, simple as that. We don’t come in trying to fill big dog’s shoes.”</p><p>While Harrell got 16 minutes of action, Reed only got six. Rivers explained after the game that part of that decision was to get Harrell, who <a href="https://twitter.com/PompeyOnSixers/status/1579591354912739328?s=20&amp;t=MxqUbx_8igUkcpJ9qq_wEA">missed their previous game</a>, some more action. Reed was drafted by the Sixers in the second round of the 2020 NBA draft out of the University of DePaul. The 21-year old rookie finished the 2020-21 NBA G League season averaging 22 points per game with 12 boards and two assists.</p><p>Reed also finished the season averaging about two blocks and two steals a game while shooting 45 percent from the three-point line, and 59 percent from the entire field. The Sixers rookie has only played seven games in his NBA rookie season.</p><p>Reed is averaging about three points per game with two boards and a block. Reed craves to improve his game and to use these accolades as motivation to make himself a bigger contributor to the Sixers. He should be very pleased with the Sixers, given their championship aspirations and hopes.</p><p>Having a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/philadelphia-76ers/roster">championship-minded head coach</a> in Doc Rivers, NBA All-Star and superstar caliber players in Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, and the veteran players that can be coaches on the floor in Danny Green, Dwight Howard, and Tobias Harris should bring great confidence to the rookie. The young rookie has a very bright NBA future ahead of him and should be in line for more minutes despite the overall success of the Sixers roster.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
