While the picks individually aren’t worth much, the value increases when teams acquire several.</p><p>That’s what happened with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-philly-trades-reggie-jackson-to-wizards-in-deal-that-includes-5-draft-picks">Wizards-76ers deal</a> hours before the trade deadline. The full <a href="https://x.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1887521355492696361" rel="noopener">details are below</a>, via ESPN’s Bobby Marks:</p><p><b>Wizards receive:</b></p><p>2026 first-round pick, least favorable of Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets (if 5-30), and Los Angeles Clippers<br>Reggie Jackson (Washington waived him shortly after making the deal)</p><p><b>Sixers receive:</b></p><p>2027 second (most favorable of Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns)<br>2028 second (Golden State)<br>2030 second (most favorable of Phoenix and Portland Trail Blazers)<br>2030 second (Washington)<br>Jared Butler</p><p>The first-round pick’s “least favorable” stipulation could make it end up near the No. 30 spot, but <a href="https://x.com/bijan_todd/status/1887526593871978704" rel="noopener">it’s still valuable</a>, via Monumental Sports Network’s Bijan Todd.</p><p>“Even if this could be the 30th pick in the 2026 draft (because it could be the Thunder’s pick), having a first-rounder in any case is a good bargaining chip for the Wizards to have,” Todd tweeted, “As in ‘look at this shiny first round pick we have’ if they try to include it in future dealings.”</p><p>With that in mind, how did Washington do in this deal?</p><h2><b>Wizards trade grade: A</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Wizards-Jared-Butler.jpg"><figcaption>© Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Losing Butler is a shame, as he proved to be a capable role player when given the opportunity this season. The 24-year-old is averaging a career-high 6.9 points on 43% shooting with 1.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists across 11.3 minutes per game. However, Washington has a crowded stable of guards, so this deal was a no-brainer.</p><p>Statistically speaking, players picked in the first round are more likely to succeed. The pick range within the round makes a difference, as <a href="https://www.82games.com/nbadraftpicks.htm" rel="noopener">70% of players picked first</a> overall become stars, while just 6% of players chosen in the 21-30 range become stars, via 82games.com’s Roland Beech. Still, while less than half of players picked in the latter range even become role players, second-rounders usually produce either “deep bench” or “complete bust” types, according to Beech’s data system.</p><p>Therefore, it makes sense to dump several second-rounders for a first, even if the seconds are high in the round. While some second-round picks (such as Butler himself) develop into role players, the Wizards need to focus on foundational pieces for their future, and they’re more likely to find those in the first. But the main reason why he started was not necessarily his ability level but those of two of his teammates.</p><p>Nick Nurse certainly values what he can do, especially next to the team’s three stars, but starting Yabusele was a way of making it easier to deploy his preferred bench unit. Amid Kelly Oubre Jr’s hand injury, Kyle Lowry was the guy filling in for him. It’s a role that guys like Paul George and Caleb Martin are capable of doing but preferably not for long stretches of the game. Lowry and Jackson have struggled individually but Nurse sees value in having them help each other.</p><p>“It gives ’em a chance to work together as far as bringing the ball up,” Nurse said. “Seems like maybe there’s one that doesn’t get as much pressure or the other one doesn’t, so we can get the ball up and get into our stuff. They’re pretty interchangeable…I just thought it was a good way of letting them play an extended stint rather than one of ’em goes in and things don’t go well and it turns into a three- or four-minute stint that’s, that’s not any fun for either one of ’em.”</p><p>The heavy reliance on Lowry and Jackson to be a point guard by committee is a result of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-jared-mccain-sends-message-to-fans-right-after-knee-surgery">Jared McCain’s meniscus injury</a>. The promising rookie’s absence leaves the 76ers with a huge hole in their offense. Even if he can’t read the floor like one of his veteran teammates, he found his own way to generate good looks for himself and his teammates.</p><p>The 76ers could go a lot of different ways at the trade deadline but one of them could be upgrading their backup guard spot, especially if McCain’s injury sidelines him through the rest of the season. Jackson says he wanted to spend more time with his family in California.</p><p>The famed former New York Yankee worked for the Houston franchise as a front office executive. Interestingly, Jackson isn’t ruling out a possible return to baseball-working for the Bronx Bombers.</p><p>“It’s always been <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/11/08/sports/reggie-jackson-leaving-astros-front-office-position/" rel="noopener">a home for me</a>,” Jackson said, per the New York Post. “I’m a Yankee. I’m still a Yankee.”</p><p>Jackson is one of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-news-reggie-jackson-drops-american-truth-bomb-on-yankees-vs-dodgers-world-series">the most prolific players</a> to ever wear a Yankees uniform, despite playing for several different teams in his MLB career. He played for the team from 1977 through 1981. He won two World Series titles with the team, and was named an All-Star every season he played in the Bronx.</p><h2>Astros need to regroup to make the postseason once again</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Alex-Bregman-with-Houston-Astros-1.jpg"><figcaption>Thomas Shea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Jackson worked for the Astros in the front office, from 2021 through the 2024 campaign. He called himself a “pseudo executive” for the team, per the outlet. He says he cherished his relationship with Jim Crane, the Astros chairperson.</p><p>“I really loved working with Jim Crane. He’s a wonderful guy, a great leader,” Jackson added. “I learned a lot being around Jim Crane. He’ll always be a friend. And that fan base is special. Man, they love their ’Stros.”</p><p>With Jackson working for the Astros, the franchise did see amazing success. Houston won the American League West Division each season the man known as Mr. October worked for the team. That is an impressive four year run, and it was capped off by the 2022 World Series championship.</p><p>Despite all of that, Jackson said he was ready to step away from the game of baseball. That may be surprising to some, as Jackson revealed he at one point <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reggie-jackson-stunning-admission-previous-attempt-to-buy-athletics">wanted to buy</a> the Athletics.</p><p>“I enjoy being around the ballpark. But the road gets a little bit old,” Jackson added. “I still like being around the game. [But] I don’t want to be gone as much. I want to see what this is like.”</p><p>That 2022 season <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-aj-hinch-perfect-response-beating-astros-playoffs">would be the last time </a>the Astros won the AL pennant. Houston has missed the World Series in the last few seasons, as the power structure seems to be changing in the American League. The Astros will have to compete with several other clubs for talent, including the Yankees as well as the Cleveland Guardians and others.</p><p>Houston reached 5,000 wins as a franchise during the 2024 season, so the Astros have a lot to build off of as they try and return to the postseason in 2025.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Time to mesh is not a luxury the Sixers have had in recent years. Fast-tracking the chemistry around the team’s nucleus of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George with role players who have played together elsewhere might be pretty helpful.</p><p>Jackson played with Andre Drummond in six different seasons with the Detroit Pistons. Only two more players, Serge Ibaka and Marcus Morris Sr., have played more NBA games with Jackson than Drummond has. As the big man returns to a team he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-andre-drummond-honest-take-being-back-home-philly">loved playing for</a>, his former co-pilot of the rebuilding Pistons will surely help him feel secure in his new home.</p><p>“That guy,” Jackson said, pointing to Drummond in response to a question of why he joined the 76ers. Before speaking to the local media, the two former teammates <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1818308942402896313" rel="noopener">worked out together</a> on the team’s practice court.</p><p>“That’s my brother so it makes it easy,” Jackson said. “We’ve stayed in touch always, ever since our Detroit days. He knows my highs and lows, same here. Family is connected. So, yeah, I was excited to be able to play with Andre again and, hopefully, the connection looks well on the court.”</p><p>Jackson also played with George on the Los Angeles Clippers. At 167 games over four different seasons, the 76ers’ newest star comes in 16th on the leaderboard of games played alongside the confident guard who earned the nickname “Big Government” for his ability to bail out his team with timely buckets. The 34-year-old’s inefficiency on two-point shots and lackluster history of drawing fouls will only be <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jacksre01.html#adj_shooting" rel="noopener">exacerbated by his age</a>. Still, his confidence and durability — he played in all 82 games last season and no fewer than 67 games in the prior three seasons — show why Philly targeted him as a third-stringer.</p><p>“Reggie is a playoff-tested veteran who brings leadership and experience to our backcourt,” 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said in the team’s official announcement of the Jackson signing. “He’s been a dynamic offensive player throughout his 13 seasons in the league.”</p><p>Playing time won’t come easy for Jackson. With Maxey and Kelly Oubre Jr. starting in the backcourt and three guards around Jackson’s size coming off the bench, he could be the deepest on the depth chart he has been since his earliest days in the league. At this stage in his career, he’s content to help the team in whatever form it takes.</p><p>“My mindset is just to come in and do whatever it takes: playing, cheering on, just trying to be a great teammate and enjoy the process,” he said. “That’s the fun thing [about] getting older in this game, you start to enjoy the process more and that’s the biggest thing I look forward to — just trying to help the locker room be great, trying to be a great team, just try to do all I can to find ways to win.”</p><h2><b>Reggie Jackson joining 76ers’ crowded guard room</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Reggie-Jackson-shoots-the-ball.jpg"><figcaption>© Michael Ciaglo-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With Jackson, Maxey, Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon and Jared McCain, the 76ers have five players listed at 6-foot-3 or smaller on Basketball Reference on their current roster, which will eventually feature 14 players once they make their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-bargain-bin-free-agents-round-out-roster">final offseason addition</a> and retain an open roster spot. Only two other teams currently have four: the New York Knicks (Jalen Brunson, Miles McBride, Cam Payne, Tyler Kolek) and the Sacramento Kings (De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Devin Carter, Jordan McLaughlin).</p><p>The listed heights of these players aren’t all-encompassing definitions of their abilities but they serve to illustrate their positional limitations, which will make Philly’s lineup combinations very rigid or comprise heavily of three-guard lineups. Size is going to be a glaring weakness for the Sixes coming into the season, both around Embiid in the frontcourt and in the backcourt options off the bench.</p><p>What the 76ers’ guards lack in size, however, they make up for in shooting. Despite the varying amounts of NBA experience and respective likelihoods of being consistent contributors for Philly, all of them can shoot the three-ball well. While it may be hard to play three of them together, whatever pairing Nick Nurse chooses should provide ample spacing from the guard spots for Embiid and George.</p><p>Jackson, who helps make up for his lack of height with a seven-foot wingspan, will have to get his three-point percentage back up. He has made just 33.7 percent of his threes over the past three regular seasons. In the three prior seasons, he made 39.3 percent of them. The players around him will get him open, so he’ll be expected to knock down more than a few.</p><p>Jackson pointed to Maxey, who is “definitely deserving” of an All-Star nod and max contract extension, and Lowry, who he said is a future Hall of Famer, as two players he’s looking forward to teaming up with. It’ll take time, he said, to mesh with them, Embiid and his other new teammates. The bulk of the chemistry he’ll generate will come in practice or the scarce opportunities he serves as an injury replacement. Accepting whatever role comes his way is a product of his tight inner circle and his upbringing.</p><p>“Being a military kid prepared me for this life,” Jackson said. “Always moving around, always trying to figure it out, find ways to acclimate yourself to a new situation, just trying to find a way to be effective.”</p><p>The chance to join a team with an appealing roster and reunite with some of his favorite teammates was too much for Jackson to pass up, even if he wouldn’t see the court as much as he would have in other places. As a veteran guard, though, Jackson doesn’t really fit Charlotte’s timeline, so it always seemed like a possibility that he could be on the move again. Jackson is capable of running his team’s second-unit offense, and he’s a spark plug scorer who can hit shots from all three levels of the floor.</p><p>What Jackson’s role with the Sixers will look like remains to be seen, because their depth chart is a bit crowded now. Maxey, Oubre, and George are all probably going to be starting, which means that Jackson will be splitting minutes with Lowry, Gordon, and Payne off the bench. Unfortunately, not all these guys are going to be able to get substantial minutes off the bench on a nightly basis.</p><p>These are good problems to have, though, and the Sixers are loading up their roster as much as possible in an effort to make a title run this upcoming season. Whether it will be enough remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the addition of Jackson will shore up Philadelphia’s backcourt even further, which is a good sign for their title prospects next year.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, Jackson’s plans to stay in Denver <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1806442826529677678" rel="noopener">came to a screeching halt</a> Thursday evening when ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Nuggets are trading Jackson to the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>The Nuggets are also sending the Hornets <a href="https://x.com/JakeLFischer/status/1806446568460976418" rel="noopener">three second-round picks</a> in 2025, 2029, and 2030, according to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer.</p><p>This is seen as a purely a cap-clearing move for the Nuggets as they’re seriously strapped for cash. The Nuggets are reportedly working on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-jamal-murray-209-million-contract-extension">max extension for Jamal Murray</a> and could use the cap space.</p><p>Following Bruce Brown’s departure last offseason, Jackson assumed the role of the main backup point guard behind Murray. Jackson would appear in all 82 regular-season games, making 23 starts while Murray battled a variety of injuries. He averaged 10.2 points and 3.8 assists per game. In the 12 playoff games he appeared in, Jackson averaged 3.5 points per game with one assist. While Jackson was in a backup role, the Nuggets clearly wanted more from him off the bench.</p><p>Jackson, who is from Colorado, spent the past two seasons with his hometown team. He was traded to the Nuggets during the 2023 season, and he would get a ring with them as they would go on to win their first-ever NBA Championship.</p><p>With Jackson’s $5.3M contract now offloaded, the Nuggets now find themselves in an interesting spot. Given Murray’s injury history, the Nuggets must find a strong backup point guard who can step up if needed. The Nuggets <a href="https://x.com/TimBontemps/status/1806443168176513336" rel="noopener">might have to find</a> this player in the “bargain bin” as they have very little money to bring any big-name players.</p><p>On the plus side, moving on from Jackson improves Denver’s chances of re-signing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Caldwell-Pope had already declined his $15M player option, making him a free agent. Caldwell-Pope is expected to attract a decent amount of attention in free agency. Upon completion of the trade, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-reggie-jackson-buyout-clippers-trade">Jackson was waived</a> by the Hornets and packed his bags for Denver. After proving his worth by coming off the bench, the Nuggets <a href="https://www.nba.com/nuggets/news/denver-nuggets-re-sign-reggie-jackson" rel="noopener">awarded</a> the veteran with a two-year, $10.25 million contract last summer. This deal contained a player option for the 2024-25 season.</p><p>With the Nuggets during the 2023-24 season, the veteran guard became an essential part of the defending NBA champion’s bench unit. Due to Jamal Murray dealing with multiple injuries during the regular season, Jackson ended up stepping into the starting lineup and serving as the starting point guard for 23 games.</p><p>In total, he played in all 82 games this past year, averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 43.1 percent from the floor and 35.9 percent from three-point range. His 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio was the best of his career.</p><p>Although he has opted into his contract with the Nuggets, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Jackson will be on their roster to begin the new season. Denver faces some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-expect-major-internal-roster-upgrade-after-disappointing-playoff-exit">financial hurdles</a> this offseason, and Jackson is immediately eligible to be traded after opting into his player option. After all, he has been a part of two championship teams since 2020.</p><p>The problem regarding Caldwell-Pope and Jackson is that the Nuggets carry a payroll of roughly $175 million. This does not include Caldwell-Pope’s contract. Essentially, the Nuggets are going to be operating as a second apron team if they run things back and keep everyone that was on their roster for the 2023-24 season.</p><p>The assumption right now is that Caldwell-Pope will receive offers anywhere from $75 million to $80 million in free agency. The good news for the Nuggets is that they own the veteran’s Bird rights, meaning that they can offer him a five-year contract to stay in Denver.</p><p>If Caldwell-Pope decides to stay in Denver on a new deal that will earn him over $20 million during the 2024-25 season, this suddenly puts the team in a bind because of the extra $5 million owed to Jackson. That is why Jackson could possibly be included in a trade just so Denver can stay below the major tax lines.</p><p>Of course, the Nuggets would like to keep their roster as is. And for the most part that’s kind of been true. The Nuggets haven’t really got the same level of bench production that they did during last season’s championship run.</p><p>But one player whose role has expanded this season and into the postseason in Reggie Jackson. Jackson was signed as a free agent on the buyout market last year, but didn’t play that much during the Nuggets title run.</p><p>This year though, Jackson has been a key player off the bench as a backup guard. He appeared in all 82 games for the Nuggets, including 23 starts, at a little over 22 minutes per game. He averaged 10.2 points per game, 1.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists with split of 43.1 percent shooting from the field, 35.9 percent shooting from the three point line and 80.6 percent shooting from the free throw line.</p><p>In Game 1 against the Wolves, Jackson played 15 minutes off the bench and finished with five points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal while shooting 2-3 from the field and 1-1 from the three point line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He joined the team last season on the buyout market after the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to the Charlotte Hornets. That play is just one of many Wembanyama has had this season.</p><p>Wembanyama has his name firmly near the top of the NBA’s Rookie of the Year race, although he is receiving strong competition from Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren.</p><p>In any case, Wembanyama has been impressive as a rookie albeit still adjusting to the NBA game. He’s started all 16 games for the Spurs and is playing a little over 30 minutes per game He’s averaging 19.0 points per game, 9.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.6 blocked shots with splits of 43.1 percent shooting from the field, 26.7 percent shooting from the three point line and 82.1 percent shooting from the free throw line.</p><p>The Spurs, however, are 3-13 and have lost 11 straight games. As of publication, they were trailing the Nuggets, 90-71. They are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. This is an undeniably <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-bruce-brown-extension-update-amid-jamal-murray-comment/" rel="noopener">significant blow</a> for the Nuggets and their hopes to defend their title this coming season, but at the same time, it is clear that the front office was prepared for this eventuality. Jackson played just 16 games for Denver last season after signing with the team as a free agent in the middle of the year. The 6-foot-2 combo guard was also limited to just 19.9 minutes per contest, which is the least he’s played since his sophomore year with the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>This could all change in 2023-24. Brown’s departure will open up a lot of minutes in the backcourt and head coach Michael Malone could turn to Jackson to see if he can fill the void. Let’s not forget that Jackson is just one year removed from averaging 16.8 points per game for the Los Angeles Clippers, making him a potent weapon on offense for the Nuggets. It seems that the 12-year veteran still has a lot of gas left in the tank, and he just needs an opportunity to prove it.
