As Jaden McDaniels blocked Kevin Durant’s signature turnaround jumper and Rudy Gobert soared through the air for his eighth powerful dunk of the evening, the Timberwolves sealed their 124-109 victory over the Phoenix Suns with a defensive showcase that had head coach Chris Finch<a href="https://x.com/MayaAflakpi/status/1905814982509396017" rel="noopener"> proud.</a></p><p>“Our defensive intensity was back,” Finch said following the game. “More of a playoff urgency to what we were doing tonight.”</p><p>Right from the tip, the Timberwolves set the tone. Jaden McDaniels opened the scoring with a smooth three-pointer, igniting the crowd and signaling what was to come. Minnesota established control early, building a 27-21 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 57-45 by halftime.</p><p>McDaniels, who finished with 16 points and three rebounds, drew particular praise for his defensive assignment against Suns star Kevin Durant. While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-anthony-edwards-injury-kevin-durant-elbow">Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards was injured</a> off an elbow received from Kevin Durant, there is a bigger hurdle for the team as stated by center Rudy Gobert.</p><p>In the win over Phoenix, Gobert finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, and a block as he would say after the game that the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6239644/2025/03/29/timberwolves-nba-playoff-chase-suns/?source=emp_shared_article" rel="noopener">“biggest opponent”</a> for them will be found when looking at themselves in the mirror according to The Athletic.</p><p>“We are our biggest opponent,” Gobert said. “We get a little complacent. When people start saying we’re good and when the odds are with us, that’s when we’re not as good.”</p><p>Gobert looks at the recent success of the team as fuel for getting back to the standard they created, especially after last season’s playoffs where they went all the way to the Western Conference Finals. They would beat teams like the Suns and even the defending champions Denver Nuggets before losing in five games to the Dallas Mavericks.</p><p>“We’ve been through it for the last few years, so by now we know that it’s just about us, our approach,” Gobert said. “It doesn’t just start at the tipoff of the game. It starts right now, how we recover, the work that we put in tomorrow. This is how we had been playing, like more of a playoff urgency to what we were doing tonight, whether it be just getting after it or really good execution on the game plan. Just got to keep doing it.”</p><p>For guard Mike Conley in his 18th season, he would admit it’s been “frustrating,” but also sees where the team can improve.</p><p>“It’s motivating and frustrating at the same time, it honestly is,” Conley said. “But I think we have a lot of room to improve. With around eight minutes to go in the period, Andrew Nembhard drove hard to the hoop on a blow-by against Mike Conley. Rudy Gobert then met Nembhard and provided resistance on his attack to the basket, but Gobert did more than just that, giving the Pacers guard a forearm shiver straight to his face.</p><p>Nembhard, understandably, did not take too kindly to this. After receiving the blow from Gobert, the Pacers guard threw the basketball at the Timberwolves center and went up to him face to face before having to be separated. As the Pacers guard was starting his drive to the hoop, Conley was on the receiving end of an elbow to the face, which was what freed up Nembhard in the first place. The Timberwolves center may simply be retaliating for his teammate, although that act of retaliation was costly, as Minnesota will now have to be without their starting center for the final 19 minutes or so of game time on Monday night.</p><p>At the very least, it seemed like this exchange lit a fire underneath the Timberwolves. Opponents are scoring 5.1 fewer points per 100 possessions during Gobert’s minutes, the Timberwolves’ best defensive rating swing, per CleaningTheGlass.</p><p>The Timberwolves have won five straight following a 5-8 skid in February. Chris Finch’s squad is battling to avoid the Western Conference play-in. They sit in seventh place at 37-29, a half-game behind the Golden State Warriors for sixth.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Nuggets are 6-4 post-All-Star break. Things are trending upward for the Timberwolves; they recently got Julius Randle back from injury and he’s been very productive since, and then on Sunday, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/is-rudy-gobert-playing-tonight-timberwolves-spurs-injury-report">Rudy Gobert re-assumed his place in the starting lineup</a> after a 10-game absence and put up 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals in his return.</p><p>The Timberwolves managed to score a season-high in points on Sunday, and this <a href="https://x.com/JonKrawczynski/status/1898935271728488766" rel="noopener">coincided with the return</a> of Gobert, who doesn’t believe that such a feat is a coincidence whatsoever.</p><p>“Do you believe in coincidences?” Gobert told reporters following the Timberwolves’ win, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.</p><p>Gobert, of course, does provide some utility for the Timberwolves on offense. He is one of the best screen-setters in the association, and he opens up a lot of options offensively by rolling hard to the rim and by being a vertical spacing outlet. Even though he’s unable to space the floor, Gobert is not a negative on the offensive end.</p><p>But <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-furious-rudy-gobert-fiery-takeaway-bucks-game">Gobert’s offensive game is not the best</a>; the Timberwolves center rarely punishes mismatches on the interior due to his limited post-game, while his inability to space the floor means that opposing teams can load up the paint or put two on the ball more conveniently due to the shorter rotations that worse spacing entails.</p><p>Gobert certainly deserves credit for being an important player for the Timberwolves in their win over the Spurs on Sunday. But there’s a strong chance that Minnesota’s season-best scoring effort simply fell on the date of his return — especially with San Antonio being paper-soft on defense ever since Victor Wembanyama went down with a season-ending injury.</p><h2><b>Timberwolves still in striking distance for an outright playoff spot</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Timberwolves-Rudy-Gobert-defends.jpg"><figcaption>© Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Timberwolves, like their peers, would not want to go through the play-in tournament just to get into the playoffs.
