With the nine-time All-Star ruled out for most of next season due to a ruptured Achilles, Henderson will have an increased role following Anfernee Simons’ trade to the Boston Celtics.</p><p>Henderson is reportedly <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3ad5rNdAM8&amp;t=2585s" rel="noopener">excited to be teaming up</a> with a future Hall of Fame guard in Lillard, per Zach Lowe.</p><p>“Now, it’s a whole different team in Portland than it was when Dame left on not great terms. The wave and stretch with Milwaukee happened, and right away, they were in contact,” Lowe said. “And fences were mended to the degree they needed to be mended. I think time had ease some of the wounds already. Scoot Henderson was clued-in to what was going on to make sure he was cool with it.</p><p>“From what I’ve been told, he was super enthusiastic about it, not threatened at all. There was this undercurrent of “if I’m Scoot, I’m going to be angry,” like I’m gonna be back on the bench. The dude’s going to be out for a year. He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The first two seasons of Scoot Henderson has had plenty of highs and lows; since being drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the second overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, Henderson hasn’t quite established himself yet as the team’s starting point guard, with the team opting to roll with Anfernee Simons at the one and Shaedon Sharpe at the two. But even if Henderson didn’t quite get as much burn in his sophomore year as he did in his rookie campaign, he still <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/blazers-news-scoot-henderson-eye-opening-take-team-element-hot-streak">made plenty of strides</a>, especially from an efficiency standpoint.</p><p>Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, however, wants to continue seeing plenty of improvements from Henderson, who could be primed for a big year especially if they do decide to finally trade Simons away. Billups, in particular, implored the upcoming third-year guard to <a href="https://hoopshype.com/rumor/3687067/" rel="noopener">keep on working</a> tirelessly on his game.</p><p>“So, my challenge for Scoot all summer has been: we need to be playing as much as we can, man. We need to be playing,” Billups said in an exclusive interview with KATU News. “You have to play basketball — and a ton of it — to be able to see those things and for the game to slow down for you. So that’s my challenge for him. And again, it’s one of the reasons why he’s here in town—working, playing hard, playing five-on-five every single day. And he’s continuing to get better.”</p><p>Henderson is only 21 years of age, and he won’t be turning 22 until February of next year. He has time on his side to establish himself as a high-level point guard for the Blazers, and as he continues to heed Billups’ challenge, he should keep on developing the necessary tools to lead a team as young as Portland has.</p><h2>Scoot Henderson primed for a big third season for the Blazers?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Scoot-Henderson-celebrates-Blazers-Nets.jpg"><figcaption>Soobum Im-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Henderson made plenty of strides last season; his true shooting percentage improved from 48.9 during his rookie campaign, to 54.0 during his sophomore season. His assist to turnover ratio also improved, and this bodes well for his development as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/why-blazers-must-still-believe-scoot-henderson-all-star-potential">Blazers’ point guard of the future</a>.</p><p>As for Billups, he saw just how far Henderson has come especially as he took a workload that became progressively heavier.</p><p>“As you can see throughout the season, as he played more and more and more, that’s when things started to change for him. He starts to see different things. He starts to be able to put teams in disadvantaged situations. He sees the lob. He sees the kick-out. It’s a team effort. The 22-29 record doesn’t look appealing, but the beginning of the season wasn’t either.</p><p>They’ve had an up-and-down season but are still a young team. Guys like Anfernee Simons and Donovan Clingan are only scratching the surface, along with Henderson. They’re a competitive, young team that has plenty of upside, as evidenced by the 5-game winning streak.</p><h2><b>Scoot Henderson loves the Blazers 5-game winning streak</b></h2><p>No one likes losing in sports. The same can be said for the Blazers. After suffering a 6-game losing streak this season, they’ve rewritten the script. Guys like Deandre Ayton are <a href="https://www.hpbl.co.in/sport/deandre-ayton-silences-doubters-with-dominant-performance-against-devin-booker-and-suns/" rel="noopener">performing at a high level</a>. Plus, there’s a sense of camaraderie within the group that wasn’t evident in seasons past.</p><p>Head coach Chauncey Billups has this group on the right trajectory. Even though they sit with a 22-29 record, it was previously 17-29 before the 5 added wins. Furthermore, teams like the San Antonio Spurs and the Sacramento Kings are on the fence for a play-in spot.</p><p>The Blazers don’t want to miss out on the playoffs. The 20-year-old is starting his second season with the Blazers after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-scoot-henderson-selection-rare-nba-draft-phenomenon-not-seen-lebron-james-class">he was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft</a> after spending two years with the G-League Ignite after graduating early from high school at 17 years old.</p><p>It was an unconventional path for such a highly touted prospect, especially one that was a five-star recruit in high school. The 6-foot-3 point guard details how beneficial it was for him to become a professional athlete at an early age rather than attending a university like most kids his age.</p><p>“The G-League was great for me,” says Henderson in a one-on-one interview with ClutchPoints. “The G-League was great for my development, the first two years in my professional career. I’d say the first year I just learned to be away from my family. I learned how to grow up pretty fast. I was on the other side of the United States, away from my family for the first time at 17 years old. I just had to grow up a lot faster than my age at the time. A lot of kids are still in high school. I didn’t take that to heart and I didn’t let that affect how I played.”</p><p>The Georgia native details how he “grew up” by playing on the other side of the country for the Henderson, Nevada-based affiliate. It was the first time in his life that he had been away from his family.</p><p>“I grew so much and there were games where I was real frustrated — because I was playing against pros — and guys compete hard every night,” Scoot Henderson details. “It wasn’t like we were playing a sorry team. These are real professional athletes, guys that have been up and down in the NBA, guys that have killed overseas, averaged 30 overseas.”</p><p>He details even further how the G-League Ignite — the affiliate that helped prepare many high-level prospects for the NBA before shutting down earlier this year — helped prepare him for life as an NBA player.</p><p>“You have guys in high school who are focused on the math quiz the day after the game,” says Henderson. “Stuff like that I had to get used to, get used to becoming a pro, and that everyday life that hooping is my job. I got comfortable with that, during my second year I was able to make that jump and get even more comfortable with being a professional athlete and taking care of my body and knowing that nutrition is a big factor. Rest is a big factor.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-blazers-must-still-believe-scoot-henderson-all-star-potential">Henderson didn’t light the world on fire during his rookie season</a>, but he had a solid campaign after averaging 14.0 points and 5.4 assists per game while starting 32 games for the young Blazers. Entering last season, <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/nba-roster-survey-facts-to-know-for-the-2023-24-season" rel="noopener">Portland actually had the fourth-youngest roster in the league</a>. The Blazers are even younger this season, <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/nba-roster-survey-facts-2024-25-season" rel="noopener">with the second-youngest roster in the league</a>.</p><p>Portland recently clinched its first win of the season in a 125-103 win over the New Orleans Pelicans with Henderson registering his best game of the season with a nine-point, seven-assist performance in 30 minutes of playing time. Henderson led the game in assists and is off to a solid start to the 2024-25 season with 15.3 points and 5.7 assists per game on 41.0% shooting from the field.</p><h2><b>Scoot Henderson Says Relationship With Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe Is Good: ‘They’re My Dogs’</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/blazers-news-scoot-henderson-shaedon-sharpe-named-to-nba-rising-stars-squad-at-all-star-weekend.webp"></figure><p>The Blazers notably feature a logjam of talented guard players in Henderson, Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe. Simons is the oldest at 25 years old, while Sharpe is just a year older than Henderson at 21 years old. Despite all being young, highly touted prospects at the same position, Henderson details that they’re all friends and that they have “good relationships.”</p><p>He’s obviously far from a finished product and has some strides to make, particularly in the shooting department, where he converted on just 38.5% of his shots from the field and 32.5% from beyond the arc. Henderson — who is speaking on behalf of his new shoe release, the Scoot Zeros II — says he worked on “everything” in the offseason.</p><p>“I focused on everything this offseason,” says Henderson. “I focused a lot on my hip mobility, my hip rotation, internal and external, things like that. Really some technical stuff, stuff that’s going to help me move even better, stronger and even more balance. Maybe even slow down and hit the brakes a lot faster. The Scoot Zeros help me hit the breaks a lot faster with the traction and how they fit on my feet — it’s like a glove.”</p><p>The second-year Blazers guard even mentions how he worked on little things like his physicality such as when he’s going up for a layup in the paint.</p><p>“Just techniques on my shot and making sure when I go up for a layup with contact, I’m making sure I’m imposing my will and bumping first and initiating the contact,” says Henderson.</p><h2>Henderson Talks Newest Shoe Release, The Scoot Zeros II</h2><p>Henderson will release his second shoe through PUMA in December after already having one released during his rookie season. The first color scheme of his Scoot Zeros II series — there will be a number of different colors — will be featured in bright neon green, blue and pink. Henderson explains what went behind the creative process for his newest shoe release.</p><p>“The main thing that influenced the Scoot Zero II was going for a low cut and something that you can wear on the court and still look fly off of the court as well,” Henderson explains. “Kind of the same thing we went for last year. One thing is, the visual part — the low cut — still looks kind of edgy. A little more flashy, It looks like it has wings on the side and on the eyelet, some fire color ways as well. On the two, we were really able to get into it with the design and the colors as well and make it a lot more fun.”</p><p>Although Henderson plays in the Northwest region for the Portland — where bright neon green is popular with the Seattle Seahawks and Oregon Ducks — he explains that had nothing to do with his color selection.</p><p>“I like green,” says Henderson. “I just wanted bright neon and I’ve always been into a neon color way. The green, the blue and the pink, those are just fire colors that I think looks great on a shoe. There’s definitely some fire colors we have, they’re going to be dropping pretty frequently and a lot of fire color ways that I think people will love. The color ways for the younger generation, that’s kind of what I attack. A lot of color ways that are neutral and anybody at any age can wear on the court.”</p><p>Henderson is thankful for being one of the few NBA stars to have a shoe deal, especially as early as his rookie season. He details how he has creative influence in the making of his shoe and has a good relationship with PUMA.</p><p>“It’s a blessing to even have my own shoe because I’m one of the very few who has played basketball, especially as a rookie to have my own signature shoe,” says Henderson. “I really appreciate PUMA for welcoming in my family. We’re always in contact with PUMA. They give me creative control on how I want the shoe to look. They also give me feedback on what the people would like and what their ideas are as well. Henderson’s arrival signaled a shift in the team’s strategy, focusing on developing young talent and building for the future. The top pick Wembanyama and 2022’s No. 2 pick Holmgren were the only unanimous selections.</p><p>Scoot averaged 14 points per game for the Blazers this season. He also dished out 5.4 assists and grabbed 3.1 rebounds per game. After a miserable start to the season, Henderson found his footing as the year rolled on. Over his final 25 games, Scoot averaged 17 points on 41 percent shooting. Over his final 12 games, he scored 19.3 points and dished out 8.3 assists while shooting 40 percent from behind the 3-point line.</p><p>Ultimately, Henderson’s rookie season is a Rorschach test of NBA stats. Henderson statistically performed better than Keyonte George and Cason Wallace – two players that made the second team, but also had the sixth-worst plus/minus this season at -495. He also averaged 3.4 turnovers and had a PER of 9.5.</p><p>Hopefully for Blazers fans, Henderson uses the snub as motivation and has his sights set on winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player award next season.</p><h2><b>Blazers coach Chauncey Billups not with Scoot Henderson long-term?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Billups-and-Scoot.jpg"><figcaption><br>© Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>In many respects, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups is the perfect coach for Scoot Henderson. As a point guard who was selected third-overall, looked like an early bust, and ended up as an NBA Finals MVP who made the Hall of Fame, Billups has walked the walk.</p><p>But there have been whispers about Billups’ job security with the Blazers this offseason.</p><p>During team exit interviews conducted at the Blazers’ practice facility in Tualatin, Portland GM Joe Cronin made it clear that, despite Portland’s poor record, head coach Chauncey Billups<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-joe-cronin-commits-chauncey-billups-portland-coach-next-season"> would be back</a> with the team next season.</p><p>Said Cronin when asked about the Blazers’ head coaching position, “We are committed to Chauncey next season.”</p><p>But earlier this month, the Blazers elected to not renew the contracts of assistant coaches Scott Brooks and Rodney Billups, Chauncey’s brother. There’s no word on whether Billups will be able to choose replacement coaches or if this is a bit of a shot across the bow at a coach that has struggled greatly in his first three seasons in Portland.</p><p>Billups has one year remaining on his contract, plus a team option for the following season. There are whispers among league sources that Billups desires a contract extension and does not want to head into next season as a lame duck, something that happens rarely in the NBA anymore.</p><p>But the Blazers, who are all but assured of another losing season, are unlikely to offer Billups the security that he desires. While it was a bit of a surprise when Billups’ name <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-chauncey-billups-blazers-job-under-microscope">popped up in conjunctio</a>n with the Phoenix Suns’ head coaching job, that would seem to indicate that all isn’t copacetic in Rip City.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

When he's not telling the stories of your favorite sports team, Peter can be found recording the next garage rock classic in his basement studio, whipping up an authentic Italian meal in the kitchen, or trying to figure out the appeal of Minecraft with his 9-year-old son in the living room.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Mini-Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Portland Trail Blazers recently completed one of their more difficult seasons in recent memory; finishing 21-61 and dealing with injury issues that stunted a significant amount of the internal growth that head coach Chauncey Billups and GM Joe Cronin were hoping for from their young team.</p><p>Of all the young players on the Blazers, no one drew more attention, and scrutiny, than rookie point guard Scoot Henderson.</p><p>Drafted third overall from the G League Ignite, and deemed the replacement for franchise icon Damian Lillard, Henderson joined the Blazers with a significant amount of hype. While he was certainly a known name, his game wasn’t necessarily a known quantity by most Blazers fans who aren’t hunting down G League games to scout players.</p><p>But by the time the season rolled around, and Lillard was with the Bucks, Blazers fans were eager to see what the kid could do.</p><p>But early in the season, Scoot couldn’t do much. In his NBA debut against the idol Russell Westbrook and the Los Angeles Clippers, Henderson had 11 points and four turnovers while shooting 0-3 from the 3-point line. In his next game, Henderson had seven points on 3-12 shooting with five more turnovers. Following that were two more games with four and 11 points.</p><p>In his fifth game, Henderson was having his best shift as a pro in the second half against the Detroit Pistons when he rolled his ankle, causing him to miss the Blazers’ next nine games. At that point, Scoot was shooting 9.5 percent from the 3-point line and averaging four turnovers per game.</p><p>Understandably, Billups elected to bring Henderson off the Blazers’ bench when he returned from the injury in late November. that moved gave Scoot the chance to find his rhythm against reserves, and he started putting up better numbers. From this point until the NBA All Star break, Henderson averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 assists, while cutting his turnovers down to 2.8 per game. Most impressively in this span, he also shot a much more respectable 34 percent from the 3-point line.</p><p>At this point, Billups<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-scoot-henderson-era-officially-begins-loss-timberwolves"> gave Henderson</a> his starting job back, saying that he had earned it through his play and his effort.</p><h2><b>Scoot Henderson’s second half with the Blazers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Scoot-Henderson-layup.jpg"><figcaption>© Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>But then, appearing in the NBA Rising Stars game, Scoot aggravated a groin injury that had been nagging him. Henderson labored his way through a couple of workouts before the Blazers decided to sit him while he recovered. He ended up missing eight games due to the injury.</p><p>After recovering from the groin injury, Henderson reached another gear on the court. Over the rest of the season, Scoot averaged 16.6 points and 7.1 assists over his final 19 games of the season. He did still have his struggles, particularly with footwork while finishing in the paint and with turnovers (4.5 per game), but Blazers fans could see his confidence growing.</p><p>Over his final six games, Henderson averaged 20.5 points and 9.8 assists. This included games of 22 and 10, 19 and 15, 18 and 12, and a 30 point outburst that included 6-7 from the 3-point line in the Blazers’ second-to-last game of the season.</p><p>While expectations were incredibly high, Henderson performed on par with other young point guards in their rookie years, including the likes of Westbrook and D’Aaron Fox. Taking the reigns of an offense at 19-years old is one of the more difficult things to do in basketball, and Henderson showed significant growth throughout the season.</p><p>Perhaps more impressively, Scoot never seemed to waver in his self-belief. In the locker room and in pre-game, Henderson always had a smile on his face. His teammates genuinely seem to like and respect him, and he had become noticeably more vocal on the court toward the end of the season.</p><p>With another rebuilding season on deck for next year, the Blazers have to be excited about what Henderson will look like with a year under his belt.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
