You know, I want to play every single game. I love playing basketball. I missed some games last year, I missed some games this year. You know, it’s just a blessing to be on that court. Keep learning and keep getting better. Keep playing with different teammates, different rotations,” Barnes said. “Right now, this is going to help for the future. He’s been a free-throw drawing machine, attempting 7.6 per 36 minutes and converting 70.7 percent. The excitement level has been incredible, especially with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-league-silence-haters-playoff-numbers-ratings-since-2014">record viewership in the NBA postseason</a>. Since both have taken center stage, ESPN asked which sport has the best athletes. It sparked a massive debate online, but emerging NBA star, Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes, weighed in and gave his two cents on the topic, <a href="https://x.com/ScottBarnes561/status/1933002756203176418" rel="noopener">wanting to prove</a> he can skate and represent NBA players in the debate.</p><p>ESPN’s <i>First Take </i>is the world’s preeminent debate show. While the sports world is still hectic, it’s slowing down with hockey and basketball in their last season series. So, they waged a debate on which sports produce the best athletes.</p><p>Former basketball and hockey players Markieff Morris and P.K. Subban defended their respective sports, while Stephen A. Smith advocated for basketball players. The conversation summary went like this: Markieff Morris: “Obviously basketball.” Stephen A. Smith: “When you talk about pure athleticism… I’m gonna go with Markieff on this.” P. K. Subban: “Put LeBron [James] on skates.”</p><p>The Toronto Raptors star quoted the video post: “Put me on skates. I’ll do it.” He also posted a GIF of Superman with a joking response.</p><p>The argument on First Take essentially came down to skill versus athleticism. The NBA’s athleticism is second to none, with players running up and down the court, catching passes easily, and being able to play at their size.</p><p>The difference is that hockey involves skating, and not everyone can skate as well as NHL players, let alone skate overall. Hockey is also more physically demanding, with hockey being a contact sport filled with broken bones and players losing teeth due to the high speeds at which players run into each other. Subban’s argument in favor of hockey players also rested on the fact that hockey players play through numerous injuries, while basketball players use load management and regularly take days off. For example, NHL superstar <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nhl/edmonton-oilers/oilers-news-connor-mcdavid-suffers-injury-scare-game-3-vs-panthers">Connor McDavid recently suffered an injury scare, but shook it off and kept playing</a>.</p><p>This argument is fascinating, and when random NBA players like Barnes get involved, you know it has gone even more viral than initially intended. Apparently, the young forward had taken a spill moments before the footage started rolling. A fall that may not have hurt him physically (thankfully), but definitely added to the comedy of the situation.</p><p>But the Raptors’ front office probably isn’t laughing. With the franchise investing heavily in Barnes and recently trading for one-time All-Star Brandon Ingram, their window for becoming serious Eastern Conference contenders is narrowing. That kind of future can’t afford any unnecessary injuries, especially ones happening on pavement in flip-flops or skates.</p><p>Barnes ended the season averaging 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game. Solid stats, no doubt. Yet injuries chipped away at his consistency and impacted the team’s chemistry in crucial stretches. If Toronto wants to move beyond mediocrity, they’ll need Barnes healthy and locked in from day one.</p><h2><b>Money Left on the Table</b></h2><p>Barnes’ rollerblading might be lighthearted, but his season wasn’t exactly lucrative. Despite signing a five-year, $225 million rookie-scale extension last year, he won’t see any of the $45 million in potential bonuses that were on the table. Those incentives—reserved for players who snag an MVP, DPOY, or All-NBA selection—now remain untouched.</p><p>At just 23, Scottie Barnes has time to get it right. But that clock ticks fast in the NBA. He’s no longer the wide-eyed rookie with unlimited upside—he’s now the guy expected to lead the Raptors forward. Whether that leadership involves more film sessions or fewer skate sessions remains to be seen. The forward played 24 minutes during the loss, posting nine points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals on 4-of-14 shooting. A questionable tag indicates Toronto is managing his injury but he will have a chance to suit up vs. the Trail Blazers.</p><p>Barnes has averaged 19.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.5 steals on 44/27/77 shooting splits during his fourth NBA season. The former No. 4 pick will begin a five-year, $224 million contract extension next season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/toronto-raptors/raptors-darko-rajakovic-reasoning-scottie-barnes-limited-fourth-quarter-minutes">The Raptors are tanking for draft lottery position</a>. However, a weak schedule has made that task challenging. Toronto has posted a 10-6 record over its last 16 games. Their wins have come against the Orlando Magic (2x), Utah Jazz (2x), Washington Wizards (2x), Philadelphia 76ers (2x), Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>Toronto is essentially locked into seventh place in the draft lottery standings. Darko Rajaković’s squad is three games behind the Nets in sixth and four ahead of the Spurs in eighth with six remaining.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers have lost four of their last five games. They sit in 12th place in the Western Conference standings, three games behind the Sacramento Kings for the West’s final play-in spot.</p><p>Jakob Poeltl (rest), Immanuel Quickley (rest) and Gradey Dick (Right Knee; Bone Bruise) will miss Thursday’s matchup. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/toronto-raptors/raptors-news-brian-windhorst-hints-toronto-tanking-hilarious-brandon-ingram-take">Brandon Ingram also remains out due to an ankle sprain</a> that has sidelined him since December.
