While you can give a lot of credit to their scouts for finding the right talent, Sam Presti’s ability to negotiate trades often goes unnoticed. One of them was how, after a series of trades, he was able to technically turn Serge Ibaka into Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in three years.</p><p>It sounds crazy to think about, but here’s how Presti got it done.</p><h2><b>Thunder trade Serge Ibaka to Orlando Magic in 2016</b></h2><p>The first trade happened in 2016 when the Thunder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/breaking-thunder-trade-serge-ibaka-magic-victor-oladipo-ersan-ilyasova-domantas-sabonis">shipped Ibaka in his prime to the Orlando Magic</a>. As the team’s defensive anchor for the past five years but the Thunder’s championship window slowly closing, Presti capitalized on trading Ibaka while his value was at its peak. In an effort to re-tool their roster around Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder received Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova, and the 11th pick of the 2016 draft. A pick that turned out to be Domantas Sabonis. This move laid the groundwork for what would eventually lead to a series of trades that would give the Thunder their next superstar.</p><p>In the same year, the Thunder made another move by flipping Ilyasova and a second-round pick <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jerami-grant-76ers-trade-ersan-ilyasova-thunder">to the Philadelphia 76ers for Jerami Grant</a>. This was a low-key deal at the time, but thanks to the Thunder’s development team, Grant would go on to become a key contributor to the team.</p><h2><b>The trade that brought Shai-Gilgeous Alexander to the Thunder</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Shai-Gilgeous-Alexander.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Before the Thunder acquired George and then SGA, they made another move using the same assets involved with the Ibaka trade. The first one was trading Grant to the Denver Nuggets for a future first-round pick which eventually became Aleksej Pokuševski. In the offseason of 2017, Presti used both Oladipo and Sabonis as trade pieces for the team to land Paul George from the Indiana Pacers. At this point, the Thunder technically already turned Ibaka to Paul George and Pokuševski. Not bad, but Presti knew he could do better.</p><p>By 2019, the Thunder decided to embrace a full rebuild after two disappointing playoff runs. It also made their decision easier with George secretly requesting a trade to the LA Clippers to team up with Kawhi Leonard. Rather than balk at the idea, especially since George still had three years left in his contract, Presti seized the opportunity to secure a massive haul. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-thunder-trading-paul-george-to-la-for-record-setting-collection-of-draft-choices">In exchange for George, the Thunder acquired Alexander</a>, Danilo Gallinari, and a staggering five first-round picks. At this juncture, we’ve already pieced together the puzzle of how the Thunder turned Ibaka into SGA. But for context, let’s see what the deal would look like if it happened in 2024.</p><p>After one season, the Thunder traded Gallinari to the Atlanta Hawks for close to nothing. And of the five first-round picks the Thunder acquired, here’s how each pick panned out thus far:</p><ul><li>Tre Mann in 2021</li><li>Jalen Williams in 2022</li><li>Dillon Jones in 2024</li><li>2025 first-round pick swap</li><li>2026 first-round pick</li></ul><h2><b>What does the trade look like if it happened today?</b></h2><p>By the 2024 trade deadline, Mann was one of the assets traded to acquire Gordon Hayward — a player who eventually retired at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Pokuševski was waived at the same timeframe. What makes this saga even crazier is that these moves can be traced back further than the Ibaka trade. In 2007, the Thunder initially acquired Ibaka by <a href="https://www.nba.com/suns/news/thomas_trade_070720.html" rel="noopener">absorbing Kurt Thomas’ contract</a> in exchange for a second-round pick. In a way, you can say OKC turned a second-round pick into SGA, Jalen Williams, Dillon Jones, a pick swap, and a first-round pick.</p><p>If this current roster still fails to win the title, Thunder fans should have nothing to worry about. Ibaka was a key contributor to the <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/nba/news/nba-finals-2019-toronto-raptors-playoffs-championship-run-best-moments-pictures-highlights-kawhi-lowry-siakam-gasol-green/1oruh9qlu8io61ctzgswjkgftp" rel="noopener">2019 NBA Champion</a> Toronto Raptors.</p><p>The Raptors are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-dennis-schroder-reason-left-lakers-free-agency" rel="noopener">set to welcome Dennis Schroder</a> to their team after his remarkable run in the FIBA World Cup. Another 2019 Raptors star, Fred VanVleet, is anticipating a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-fred-vanvleet-return-game-raptors-revealed" rel="noopener">return to Canada soon</a> as well.</p><p>Now, it has been <a href="https://www.eurohoops.net/en/euroleague/1553244/serge-ibaka-reportedly-signed-with-bayern-munich/" rel="noopener">revealed via a rumor</a> on EuroHoops.net that Ibaka has signed with a famous German basketball club, Bayern Munich.</p><p>Ibaka played an average of <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/3439/serge-ibaka" rel="noopener">just over 20</a> games per season the last three seasons with the Bucks and Clippers. His 2018-2019 stint with the Raptors represents the last time he approached an 82 game season, as he played in 74 games then.</p><p>The well known Raptors center Ibaka began his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder before moving on to Toronto in 2016-2017. Ibaka is now 33 years old, and was drafted 24th overall by the Seattle Supersonics in 2008. A three-time All-Defensive First Team selection, Ibaka won the gold Eurobasket medal in 2011 and a silver medal in the 2012 Olympics with the Spanish national team.</p><p>If the rumor is indeed true, Ibaka will play in the country that just brought home the gold in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. According to EuroHoops.net, Ibaka has signed with Bayern Munich for next season, as shared by Spanish journalist Marc Mundet.</p><p>The longtime Raptors star Ibaka has NBA career highs of 15.4 points, 8.8. rebounds and 1.8 assists. Be sure to follow him on Twitter @BrettSiegelNBA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Veteran big man Serge Ibaka began the 2022-23 season with the Milwaukee Bucks, a team that had set <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-adrian-griffin-giannis-antetokounmpo-championship-future" rel="noopener">high title aspirations</a> for themselves. While they did find a lot of success on the floor during the regular season, the Bucks looked very dysfunctional in the postseason and their year ended in playoff disappointment.</p><p>Even before getting to the playoffs, though, something seemed off about this group and this likely factored into a lot of the changes they made in the middle of the season, one of which involved trading Ibaka after he requested a trade.</p><p>The now 14-year veteran recently sat down and spoke with The Athletic’s Shams Charania about his time with the Bucks and Ibaka <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1687101229854531586?s=20" rel="noopener">did not hold back</a> his true feelings for this team and previous head coach Mike Budenholzer.</p><p>“What happened for me, I decided to leave when I feel like I got to a point where I couldn’t take what was happening anymore,” Ibaka started. “The summer before when I was a free agent, coach called me and told me about a lot of things, but I knew going there that I was not going to play like I wanted to because you got Brook [Lopez], who had one of the best seasons he’s had in the last five to six years, and you got Bobby [Portis] who is playing at a high-level. I already knew going there that it would be hard for me to find minutes to play and we talked about it before I signed.”</p><p>Knowing that he was not the player he once was, Ibaka was happy to fill a role on the bench for a contending team like the Bucks. However, his relationship with Budenholzer quickly went south after the team dealt with injuries and Ibaka’s role diminished.</p><p>“It’s a long season and guys can have injuries, so you have to stay ready,” Ibaka continued. “Going there, I said, ‘cool, I’m going to stay ready…’ I’m a professional and so grateful to be in this position. It’s a blessing no matter if I am playing or not. But now when things start getting more confused for me mentally was like when a guy got injured and nobody called my name to play. And when those guys came back, that’s when you called me. And then I play one game and then you don’t play me for three weeks? On top of that, there was no communications, so that’s mainly the reason why I left…</p><p>“I was cool with everybody and everybody was great with me in the locker room, you can ask everyone in that locker room… I’m not asking about playing, just communications at the least.”</p><p>As Ibaka eluded to, his biggest problem during his time with Milwaukee is that there was no communication between him and the coaches on what his role was going to be. For a veteran like the former NBA champion, this can be especially frustrating given that he played one game and then sat on the bench for weeks after.</p><p>The Bucks are now enter a new era where Giannis Antetokounmpo is still their leader, but former Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin is their new head coach. This organization still expects to contend for a title, which is why Milwaukee is looking to bounce back heading into the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2023-24-nba-power-rankings-trade-rumors-offseason" rel="noopener">2023-24 season</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
