Dinwiddie was released by Charlotte less than a week before the start of the new NBA campaign, as the team needed to shed a player to get inside the 15-standard contract limit.</p><p>But why Dinwiddie?</p><p>It appears that the Hornets decided to part ways with Dinwiddie because they didn’t want another veteran in forward Pat Connaughton to be the one they’d waive <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/monday-best-one-more-burst-of-around" rel="noopener">for at least two reasons</a>, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.</p><p>For one, Connaughton is said to have cultivated a great persona in the young Hornets locker room.</p><p>“The 32-year-old is already a popular locker room presence in Charlotte, ranks as the only active Hornet who has won an NBA championship and is one of just two thirtysomethings on a young team alongside 35-year-old Mason Plumlee,” wrote Stein.</p><p>Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, Stein noted that “Charlotte does still harbor hope that the former Milwaukee Buck’s $9.4 million expiring contract holds some appeal as a useful trade chip between now and the Feb. 5 trade deadline.”</p><p>Connaughton arrived in Charlotte via a trade in July. The Bucks sent him to the Hornets along with two future NBA draft picks in exchange for Serbian guard Vasilije Micic, who was later waived by Milwaukee. Two weeks before that move by Milwaukee, Connaughton picked up his player option for the 2025-26 season worth $9.43 million.</p><p>Selected in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Brooklyn Nets, Connaughton has played 595 regular-season games in the league, averaging 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 35.6 percent from behind the arc in his career.</p><p>Connaughton isn’t expected to get heavy minutes with the Hornets, and is likely not going to be part of the team’s rotation, while being buried on the depth chart behind the likes of Kon Knueppel, Josh Green and Liam McNeely. He will join LaMelo Ball and a young team that is attempting to build itself into an Eastern Conference contender.</p><p>Dinwiddie is an 11-year veteran with a plethora of experience. He has played for teams in the postseason hunt as well as those who are simply trying to retool. Across 79 games with the Dallas Mavericks last season, the Los Angeles native averaged 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists while shooting roughly 42 percent from the field.</p><p>The move comes amidst what has been an interesting summer for Charlotte. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/draft-grade-hornets-new-rookie-kon-knueppel">Hornets drafted Duke product Kon Knueppel</a> with the fourth overall pick, signed both Tre Mann and Mason Plumlee, and made a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/grading-hornets-jazz-trade-collin-sexton-jusuf-nurkic">trade for former Utah Jazz point guard Collin Sexton</a>.</p><p>The Hornets went 19-63 last season under head coach Charles Lee. Ball missed significant time and only managed to compete in 47 games. To have a label that refers to them being bad or mediocre would rub the Suns star the wrong way, and rightfully so.</p><p>In the meantime, Durant is recovering from an ankle sprain he suffered on March 30. Before the injury, he was averaging 26.6 points, six rebounds and 4.2 assists per game after 62 appearances. He has shooting splits of 52.7% from the field, including 43% from beyond the arc.</p><p>The team looks for him to return within the next week as they need him to compete for a play-in spot throughout the remaining regular-season games. Anymore losses will damage their hopes of postseason action.</p><p>The Suns have been unlucky throughout the 2024-25 campaign. Despite boasting an offense with Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, their defense has been a major weakness as opponents continue to exploit them there. They are 22nd in scoring defense (116.6) and 28th in defensive rating (119) so far this season.</p><p>Phoenix has a 35-41 record so far, holding the 11th spot in the Western Conference standings. He’s recorded impressive assist numbers plenty of times this season. Playing the role of point guard comes with more responsibility than simply finding the open man, however.</p><p>Of course, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were Dallas’ lead guards early in the campaign. As you may have heard, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/lakers-news-mavericks-luka-doncic-anthony-davis-trade">Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers</a> in February. In early March, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-out-injury-torn-acl">Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending ACL injury</a>. The roster has dealt with no shortage of other injury concerns as well.</p><p>With all of the changes on the roster, setting up the offense has been no easy task. Dinwiddie is now starting at point guard for the Mavs. Following Wednesday’s game, he <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1907646104293830919" rel="noopener">acknowledged the challenges of the situation</a>.</p><p>“Hey bro… I thought last year was the hardest year of my career for, like, things outside of my control,” Dinwiddie said. “This has been a difficult year from the standpoint of, like, just every game is different. It’s an adjustment on the fly. My task changes game-to-game, sometimes within the game because sometimes a guy goes down within the game… With that being said, it’s been rewarding, though, too, to be around great people. To be able to compete to be in the playoffs.</p><p>“No two days have been the same. Usually, no two years are the same, but no two days have been the same this year. Yeah, it’s been rewarding.”</p><p>The changes have often been Mavericks players going down with injuries this season. Over the past few weeks, though, the changes have been positive with players such as Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II returning from injuries. Their returns still represented an adjustment for the offense, however.</p><p>Dinwiddie has enjoyed some quality games in the 2024-25 season. His play-making, as mentioned, has been important. The Mavericks need a reliable lead guard, and Dinwiddie has done a respectable job of handling the responsibility. However, Spencer Dinwiddie didn’t see much of an issue with it.</p><p>That’s not to say that Dinwiddie supported the trade entirely. Despite any justification, Dinwiddie is getting tired of the disrespect surrounding Davis.</p><p>The latter is one of the top two-way players and one of the best big men in the NBA. As a result, it made Dinwiddie eager to play with him.</p><p>On the Club 520 Podcast, the Mavericks guard wants people to <a href="https://youtu.be/_CrdB84HVT4?t=2126" rel="noopener">stop hating</a> on the trade.</p><p>They are both my friends and L to me is probably the best offensive player in the NBA right now,” Dinwiddie said. “But AD might be the best two-way player. Probably him and Giannis (Antetokounmpo). So it’s a tough position to be in like I said.</p><p>“The only thing that sucks is they’re acting like AD is a bum, that’s the crazy part. You could feel how you feel about the trade. Win, lose, better for now, better for the future, whatever it may be. We’ve got to stop acting like AD isn’t AD bro. We got to stop.”</p><h2><b>Spencer Dinwiddie sees Anthony Davis as elite for the Mavericks</b></h2><p>While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-anthony-davis-playing-tonight-dallas-magic-injury-report">Davis is finally recovering from injury</a>, Dinwiddie makes an intriguing point. He is one of the best defensive players in the league. Not to mention, his inside-out game is a nightmare for opponents to defend.</p><p>He’s too quick for center but too strong for forwards. It’s the perfect mix for the Mavericks. On a team with guys like Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, they have plenty of size.</p><p>Interestingly enough, that versatility was a big component of their defense in the playoffs. Although they lost in five games to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, they had a nice lineup.</p><p>Inserting Davis for Doncic is tough but it cleans up a ton of work defensively. Being healthy is the main concern at this point. Not to mention, Davis <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/anthony-davis-injury-history" rel="noopener">missed 18 games</a> before returning against the Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>Still, the Mavericks would be out of the play-in tournament if the season were to end today. However, if they have the same record as the Phoenix Suns, they would also be out.</p><p>Regardless of whether or not the trade was a win or loss for the Mavericks, people will continue to be discontent. The Mavs guard scored 31 points and recorded seven assists, three rebounds and two steals. Following the game, Dinwiddie <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1903307161301655638" rel="noopener">shared an honest message</a> on dealing with people who doubt his game.</p><p>“When you’re younger it’s very motivating. When you’re older, you’re like… ‘what the h*ll?.’ So it’s a little bit different,” Dinwiddie told reporters. “It’s a different feeling because it don’t make no sense to you, but you understand, like, that’s the business sometimes. Narratives fly and people run with it… My agent sent me something, I’m still a top 15 ISO player even with all the crazy stuff that happened this year… You don’t do that by accident.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-spencer-dinwiddie-blunt-admission-injury-roster">Dinwiddie has helped the Mavs remain in postseason contention despite all of the injuries</a>. He has enjoyed some big games, but the veteran guard has also had some lackluster performances. Either way, the Mavs will need Dinwiddie to play well as the season winds down.</p><p>Overall, Dinwiddie is averaging 11 points per game while shooting 42 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from beyond the arc. He is also recording per game averages of 4.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds per outing. Dinwiddie has appeared in 69 total games in the 2024-25 campaign, earning 22 starts.</p><p>The Mavericks’ chances of clinching a play-in tournament spot will increase if Dinwiddie can consistently play well moving forward. The Mavs guard recorded 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists and a steal in the win. Overall, the Mavs only had eight available players due to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-unprecedented-injury-situation-suns">plethora of injuries on the roster</a>. Dinwiddie <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1899485519546872062" rel="noopener">shared a brutally honest statement</a> on the Mavs’ current injury situation while speaking to reporters after Monday night’s game.</p><p>“We got great people in the locker room, like phenomenal human beings,” Dinwiddie said. “We just ain’t got nobody healthy.”</p><p>The Mavericks are continuing to fight while trying to remain positive despite the difficult circumstances. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-klay-thompson-statement-dallas-future-2024-25-season">Klay Thompson is also still confident in the Mavs’ future</a>.</p><p>“We still have big goals, we still want to make a run,” Thompson told reporters. “The injuries have been awful, but I still love our team.”</p><p>Dinwiddie <a href="https://x.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1899483359824285852" rel="noopener">was later asked</a> if losing players due to injuries brings the few players that are healthy and on the floor closer together.</p><p>“I guess in a strange way, sure… We have no options,” Dinwiddie said. “All you can do is look to your left and your right, go out there.”</p><h2><b>Mavericks looking to earn postseason spot despite injury concerns</b></h2><p>Dallas is looking to clinch a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. The Mavs are now 33-33 following Monday’s win, as they hold a two and a half game lead over the Phoenix Suns for the No. 10 seed (final play-in position). Mavs star guards <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-luka-doncic-out-kyrie-irving-in-for-clippers-rematch">Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have dealt with injury trouble</a> at times in the 2024-25 campaign, but Dinwiddie has stepped up and helped the Mavericks remain competitive.</p><p>So why bikes specifically? Well, for Dinwiddie, the bikes symbolize something greater and more meaningful.</p><p>“It’s funny, my Dad actually skied and rode bikes,” Dinwiddie said. “Obviously these are a little bit more leisure bikes than the competitive ones that he did, but I just thought it was a good little call back to my Dad.”</p><p>Nick Titus of Raising Cane’s was excited for Dinwiddie to partner with the company in order to spread holiday cheer. Raising Cane’s consistently looks for ways to make an impact in communities around the country, and they enjoy doing it with the help of the Mavericks.</p><p>“It’s always great to work with the Dallas Mavericks,” Titus said. “To have Spencer here to bring some attention to this really cool event that we’ve been doing for a few years now, we’re just honored to be here and be apart of it and to be able to make a difference in the community. It’s great to have him here with us.”</p><p>Sunday’s event was impressive to say the least, as Raising Cane’s filled an entire gym with 100 bikes. The veteran point guard <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X51DgBrQIsY" rel="noopener">told his side of the story this week</a>, accusing the team of pressuring him into a pass-first role to boost their other players, then trading him and trashing his reputation.</p><p>“I understand Brooklyn was going to make the best decision they could for their organization,” Dinwiddie said on ex-Nets teammate Theo Pinson’s podcast. “To go back to a team that you spent five years, had a lot of success at, basically lead the league in assists because they asked you to kind of help feature their trade pieces and whatnot, and then basically [get] kicked out the door. And for them to re-bring up the cancer label because of what happened in D.C., if another team doubles down on that, it effectively kills your career.”</p><p>The Nets re-acquired Dinwiddie, who spent five successful seasons with the team from 2016-2021, from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2023 trade deadline in a package for Kyrie Irving.</p><h2>Spencer Dinwiddie rips Nets for messy exit after second stint with team</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Spencer-Dinwiddie.jpg"><figcaption>John Jones-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After re-joining Brooklyn, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-2022-23-player-grades-spencer-dinwiddie">he ranked fifth in the league in assists</a> at 9.1 per game over 26 appearances to close the 2022-23 season.</p><p>Mikal Bridges, who also joined the team at the 2023 deadline as the centerpiece of Brooklyn’s return for Kevin Durant, turned in a career-best stretch alongside Dinwiddie during that period. The Villanova product averaged a career-high 27.7 points per game on 47/38/89 shooting splits, a performance that led to speculation about whether he could be a top offensive option on a contender.</p><p>Dinwiddie said that helping feature Bridges and the Nets’ other trade acquisitions was his primary assignment. The 31-year-old appeared increasingly discontent with that role during the first half of 2023-24, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-nets-raptors-trade-spencer-dinwiddie-dennis-schroder">culminating in a trade to the Toronto Raptors</a> for Dennis Schroder at the deadline, after which he was bought out. He claims Brooklyn attempted to sabotage his career following the deal by confirming locker room issues he had during his messy exit from the Washington Wizards.</p><p>“You took me from my [sons in Dallas], basically. And then you asked me to do a very specific task, and I did it. ‘We need to stay in the playoffs, and you need to help feature our trade pieces,’” Dinwiddie said of Brooklyn’s message. “Ok, I will do what you ask of me. And then the reward that they gave me was, we’re going to kick you out the door. And, not just that, we’re going to double down on some s**t that happened to you from three years ago. Because if we say it and it’s from three years ago, your career is over.</p><p>“So you can extrapolate and guess the conversations or anything else that happened, and blah, blah. And it’s not to get into all those details, whatever. But effectively, that’s what happened.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-spencer-dinwiddie-lakers-clearing-waivers">Dinwiddie signed with the Lakers</a> to close the 2023-24 season. After the disappointing campaign, he re-joined the Dallas Mavericks on a minimum contract this summer. After his experience with the Brooklyn Nets, it’s understandable why Spencer appreciated the transparency. </p><p>In a recent Run Your Race podcast episode, Dinwiddie <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYtzyQRsp4k&amp;t=4309s" rel="noopener">explained</a> how, due to injury, he missed out on a $100 million contract. Spencer didn’t want to miss significant time while playing alongside superstars Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving, but he suffered a season-ending injury by not taking proper precautions. </p><p>“I ain’t going to lie to you because this one hurt so bad when this happened. I was like, maybe it’s a meniscus or something; if I shave it, I’ll be back in a couple of months,” Dinwiddie said. “You’ve got to remember I just came off of averaging 20, so now I’m like, alright, cool, I’m just going to be basically like the glue connecting piece for this team, we’re going to win a title, and I’m going to get a crazy bag from the standpoint of I can be a glue guy on a title team, or I can be an offensive juggernaut if you’re like okay or decent.</p><p>“I still got a good contract because obviously of what happened, but I had $100 million sitting in my hand; it was right there,” Dinwiddie concluded.</p><p>After averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 assists in 2019-20, Dinwiddie suffered a season-ending injury three games into the following campaign. Unbeknownst to him, he tore his ACL and eventually signed a three-year deal worth $55 million in 2021. He is also recording 2.6 assists and 1.6 rebounds per outing while averaging 19.5 minutes per game. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-spencer-dinwiddie-role-change-preseason-injuries">Dinwiddie has seen an increase in playing time</a> in recent games due to the Mavericks’ injuries.</p><p>He is prepared to help the team in any role necessary.</p><p>“I think personnel, also the team were playing, what’s asked of me,” Dinwiddie explained. “There’s some nights where they’re like, let’s say for example we’re playing the Jazz, they’re like, ‘hey, you’re going to have to guard (Lauri) Markkanen.’ Okay, well I know that it’s one of those types of nights. Like be really locked into that, try not to give him any airspace. It also might mean I end up in foul trouble, so I might have less minutes but I gotta play those minutes in a certain style.</p><p>“It’s just reading the feedback from the coaches and then also the game itself… Lineups, and opponents and all that other stuff will, you know, change kind of who I am nightly.”</p><p>Dinwiddie’s numbers may not jump off the page. One of Dallas’ primary goals during the offseason was to add depth, though. Dinwiddie is prepared to help the Mavs in any way he can.
