Before going to the US, Adams played for NBL squad Wellington Saints where he was named the NBL Rookie of the Year and he helped the team win the 2011 NBL Championship.

Adams then enrolled at Notre Dame Prep School for one semester before attending Pittsburgh.

Steven Adams was named to the Big East All-Rookie team in his lone season with Pittsburgh.

He started all 32 games for the Panthers where he averaged 7.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game.

Adams then declared for the 2013 NBA Draft, foregoing his last three years of eligibility.

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected Steven Adams with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, making Adams the first New Zealander to be selected in the first round of an NBA Draft.

His rookie-scale contract with the Thunder was worth $9.6 million for four years.

Adams’ 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game were enough to earn him NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors.

Adams proved to be a major piece for the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is why he signed a contract extension worth a whopping $100 million for four years on October 31, 2016.

Throughout his career with the Thunder, Adams averaged 9.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1 block a game.

Unfortunately, his time with OKC came to an end on November 24, 2020, when he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans.

Part of the deal with the Pelicans was a contract extension worth $35 million for two years.

After one season with the Pelicans, Steven Adams was traded once again and he will start the 2021-2022 NBA campaign with the Memphis Grizzlies.

In 2019, Steven Adams was ranked #78 in Forbes’ list of The World’s Highest-Paid Athletes.

Steven Adams released an autobiography in 2018 titled “Steven Adams: My Life, My Fight”.

He described the book in an interview posted on Twitter:

“It’s about myself. … I didn’t actually want to, but someone told me it should be a good idea and they’ll be interested. So I was like, okay, whatever.”

When asked if he wrote the book:

“No. I didn’t write it. I got a ghostwriter named Madeleine Chapman. I can barely read, mate.”

In the book, Adams shared about his battle with depression when his father died when he was 13 years old.

“After my dad died, I didn’t have [the fight],” says Adams. “I knew I wanted to do something but I just didn’t know what that thing was. And if a purpose hadn’t come along soon, I would have started looking for something, anything, to feel a high."

“When I think back, I realize that I was actually very lonely and, if I’m honest, probably a little depressed. No one had told us how to cope with grief. We didn’t see a counselor or go to any therapy sessions.”

Steven Adams is also an avid video gamer.

Steven Adams started a basketball camp called Steven Adams Camps in New Zealand.

Its purpose is to help build pathways for student-athletes and to give back to the game of basketball.

“Basketball has done so much for me, I’m just trying to create opportunities for other kids.”

Adams is still one of the most serviceable in the league today. So, it’s no surprise if gets to prolong his NBA career and get paid a lot while he’s at it.
