Edwards, now a full-fledged star, couldn’t contain his excitement as he reacted to the emphatic slam.</p><p>Shannon <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/timberwolves-94-nuggets-83-terrence-040231731.html" rel="noopener">downplayed the moment afterward</a>, telling reporters, “Ant is always bringing the energy. But I didn’t think it was that crazy. That’s why I just started laughing… Ant’s my boy.”</p><p>Rookie guard Rob Dillingham, who assisted on Shannon’s poster, chimed in after the game, saying, “Ain’t nothing to think about. Who else is doing that? And he got me an assist.”</p><p>Dillingham, who struggled with turnovers and shooting in the Wolves’ Summer League opener, rebounded with a strong performance. He totaled 15 points and nine assists with just two turnovers, showcasing much-improved decision-making and offensive control.</p><p>The Timberwolves’ Summer League roster, considered to be one of the most competitive in Las Vegas, features second-year players like Shannon, Dillingham, and Jaylen Clark, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/timberwolves-news-joan-beringer-best-rudy-gobert-impression-summer-league">as well as rookie Joan Beringer</a>. Clark contributed six points, including two 3-pointers, and added two steals and a block defensively. Tristen Newton also chipped in 12 points off the bench, adding valuable scoring depth.</p><p>On the other side, Denver couldn’t keep up, falling to 0-2 in Summer League play. Their roster lacked the high-end talent and physicality of Minnesota’s group. In his final season, 2023-24, he averaged 23.0 points per game and led Illinois to the Elite Eight. As a pro, he played 32 regular season games for Minnesota in year one, averaging 4.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.</p><p>He had one of the best games of his NBA career so far in Game 3, a 143-101 Timberwolves win, scoring 15 points in 13 minutes. He did his damage on 5-8 shooting and added two rebounds, an assist and a steal.</p><p>“We needed some physicality out there,” Minnesota coach Chris Finch said after the game. “Just kind of a different type of player than we have in other positions. So we kind of knew coming into the game that we were gonna get to him. As CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander noted at the time, it gave the Illini <a href="https://x.com/CoachUnderwood/status/1916903083910529274" rel="noopener">five players on their roster</a> with a last name ending in -ic.</p><p>Underwood himself appears in on the joke. After Stojakovic committed, he changed his profile picture on X to an AI version of himself that made him look like a character straight out of Grand Theft Auto IV.</p><p>“Today in college basketball: The head coach of Illinois is posting AI-rendered images of himself in Balkan Cold War-era aesthetic after he landed a fifth commitment from player whose last name ends in ‘ic,’” Norlander wrote in a quoted post of Underwood’s new pic.</p><p>Illinois also added Arkansas transfer Zvonimir Ivisic, or “Big Z” as the Croatia native is known, earlier in the offseason.</p><p>The Illini have made five straight trips to the NCAA Tournament under Underwood (and it would have been six if the 2020 tournament wasn’t canceled). Also, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/illinois-basketball-news-ad-inexcusable-terrence-shannon-jr-jersey-retirement-debacle">Illinois AD called Shannon’s retirement ‘inexcusable</a>.’ His jersey was presented to him as upside down.</p><p>However, it didn’t seem to bother the former Fighting Illini forward in the slightest. Funny enough, he used the moment as an inspiration to others. It caught the eye of his former head coach. Following Tuesday’s 95-74 loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, Underwood gave props to his Shannon for <a href="https://x.com/glenn_kinley/status/1892073414065537100" rel="noopener">how he dealt with the blunder</a>.</p><p>“I couldn’t be any more proud of the way that young man handled that situation– his moment,” Underwood said via Glenn Kinley of WCIA 3 station in Illinois. “And then to turn it around and give it all to charity.”</p><p>Shannon gave the proceeds from his jersey retirement all to charity. It took many people by surprise, considering the enormity of the moment. However, he’s currently making a mark in the NBA. With the Minnesota Timberwolves, head coach Chris Finch has given him more and more of an opportunity with each game.</p><p>There’s a reason he had his jersey retired with Illinois basketball.</p><h2><b>Terrence Shannon Jr’s impact on Illinois basketball is felt</b></h2><p>The two years he spent in Champaign were truly felt. It put Illinois basketball back on the map. He was a <a href="https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/terrence-shannonjr-1.html" rel="noopener">two-time All-Big Ten guard</a>, as well as an All-American in his final season. Not to mention, his 23 points per game was the highest on the team and one of the highest in the conference.</p><p>They won the Big 10 championship last season and made it to the Elite Eight. Although they were stomped by UConn, it was a great showing by the Fighting Illini. Furthermore, it established them as a quality basketball program once again. However, since Shannon Jr left, it hasn’t been the same.</p><p>The 17-11 record is a bit disappointing, considering that they were the No. 3 seed last season in the NCAA tournament. To add insult to injury, Illinois’ jersey retirement ceremony also did not go as planned.</p><p>The Fighting Illini <a href="https://www.on3.com/news/illinois-mistakenly-retires-terrence-shannon-jr-jersey-upside-down/" rel="noopener">made one crucial mistake</a> during Saturday’s Terrence Shannon Jr. jersey retirement celebration. When Shannon Jr. pulled a red string to reveal his jersey, the assembled fans at State Farm Center gasped in unison. Shannon Jr.’s jersey was upside down.</p><p>Illinois’ athletic director Josh Whitman sounded off on the debacle in an interview after the game.</p><p>“Obviously a really regrettable moment,” Whitman said. “It’s a shame that it happened that way. Of course, I didn’t hang the jersey, but I’m ultimately responsible for everything that happens in this building. And ultimately that means that was on me tonight. We need to make sure that we understand that in life mistakes happen, but there are also certain moments where mistakes can’t happen. Tonight, we stole that moment from Terrence, and that’s on us. [It is] something we have apologized to him for, apologized to his mom. I wanted to make sure we apologized to our fans and everybody who was excited to be a part of this experience tonight.”</p><p>Whitman did not hold back, eventually calling the upside down jersey mistake ‘inexcusable’ per Joey Wagner of 247sports.com.</p><p>“Tonight was months in the planning. There was an incredible amount of great work done by our staff, by people in Terrence’s camp. You think about from the t-shirts to the bobbleheads to the appearance to the video work that was done in preparation for this evening. The energy in the building was incredible, all crescendoing towards that one moment. For that to happen in that instance was inexcusable.”</p><p>Whitman clearly understands that the moment did not happen according to plan.
