The older Antetokounmpo brother is finally back in the NBA, with the Bucks paving the way for his return after he missed the entirety of the 2024-25 season with a torn Achilles.</p><p>At this point, the Bucks’ decision to bring Thanasis back is understandable, and is a no-brainer, in fact. Giannis’ future is up in the air, and everything Milwaukee could do to convince him to stay, they must do so without even thinking about it twice. But there appears to be more to the Bucks’ decision to re-sign Thanasis than meets the eye, as according to the 33-year-old forward, <a href="https://www.eurohoops.net/en/nba-news/1862956/thanasis-antetokounmpo-sealed-the-new-deal-with-the-bucks-after-the-game-vs-italy-they-were-excited/" rel="noopener">he impressed them</a> with the way he played in Greece’s two wins to start their journey in the 2025 EuroBasket.</p><p>“They were here after the first game against Italy, and they were excited because I was playing defense. I was doing my job, that’s my role. The important thing is that everyone who returns (after such an injury) with a team, or in a tournament like this, has to prove themselves again. That’s basketball. Whatever you have done so far counts; it’s your resume, but you have to prove it every day. That’s professional sports,” Antetokounmpo said, per Eurohoops.</p><p>Indeed, Thanasis brought his trademark energy whenever Greece put him out on the court. He might not come anywhere close to the dominant force his younger brother is, but make no mistake about it, he adds value to the Bucks beyond having the Antetokounmpo surname.</p><h2><b>Bucks do everything in their power to convince Giannis to stay</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Bucks-forward-Giannis-Antetokounmpo-34-celebrated-with-Bucks-forward-Thanasis-Antetokounmpo.jpg"><figcaption>© Geoff Burke-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Bucks’ future might be looking bleak, but as long as Giannis is on the roster, there is hope for them. They definitely moved with a hint of desperation this offseason, waiving and stretching the injured Damian Lillard’s contract so they could open up the space to sign Myles Turner, but it’s not as though Turner is moving the needle for this particular Bucks team.</p><p>As for Thanasis, he is expected to retain Giannis, with the power of family continuing to define the Antetokounmpo brothers. The older Antetokounmpo brother took a hiatus last season after he tore his Achilles, but the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-bucks-news-giannis-staying-milwaukee-brother-signs-1-year-contract">Bucks have reunited the two</a> — which means that Giannis should still be on the Bucks roster for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Of course, Thanasis is not going to be much more than a 13th man and a towel-waver for a Bucks team with playoff aspirations. Nevertheless, he’s been a beloved member of the locker room for the entirety of his career and he gives the Bucks some Giannis assurance. And they couldn’t be more happier that he’s back on the roster, if <a href="https://x.com/Bucks/status/1962206595615433049" rel="noopener">their reply</a> to Thanasis’ tweet is any indication.</p><p>“LET’S GO,” the Bucks’ official account on X posted as a response to Thanasis’ tweet.</p><p>It was in May 2024 when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-thanasis-antetokounmpo-diagnosed-with-brutal-injury-after-first-round-exit-vs-pacers">Thanasis tore his Achilles</a> during a workout. A torn Achilles tendon almost always means the entire year off, and surely enough, Antetokounmpo missed the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign, with the Bucks choosing not to re-sign him while he rehabbed to make better use of the roster spot.</p><p>But with Giannis’ future in Milwaukee in doubt, the Bucks certainly felt as though they had to do whatever it takes to appease their franchise cornerstone, and signing Thanasis seems to be a good way to do just that. Thanasis has been taken care of by the Bucks for so long, and this should certainly help Giannis see that the franchise just wants nothing but the best for him and his family.</p><p>Only time will tell, however, if Thanasis’ presence on the roster will make Giannis stick around for the Bucks for the long haul.</p><h2><b>Thanasis Antetokounmpo is the Bucks’ ultimate Giannis assurance</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Thanasis.jpg"><figcaption>Michael McLoone-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The entire world knows that the main reason Thanasis is a member of the Bucks roster right now is to show Giannis just how committed they are to him. During the 2023-24 season, Thanasis played all of 34 games for Milwaukee and averaged 4.6 minutes a night while doing so. He is the very definition of a garbage-time player, and it’s unlikely at all for that to change considering that he’s coming off an Achilles tear.</p><p>Some may argue that signing Thanasis is nothing other than a waste of a roster spot for the Bucks. In adding Durant, the Rockets will have a proven superstar with loads of experience on the grand stage.</p><p>With this, former Milwaukee Bucks forward Thanasis Antetokounmpo <a href="https://x.com/ThanalysisShow/status/1943127805396476307">offered a bold statement</a> about the two-time Finals MVP joining H-Town.</p><p>“I think this might be the best team he’s ever been traded to. Because he didn’t get traded to Golden State, he actually signed with them, correct?” said Antetokounmpo on his podcast.</p><p>Antetokounmpo clarified his strong assessment of the Rockets’ star and the team’s that he has been on in his career.</p><p>“Let me rephrase this. Not the best team he’s ever been on because he had Golden State, and then he had the Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets were different, right? After spending the last five years with the team, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-thanasis-antetokounmpo-diagnosed-with-brutal-injury-after-first-round-exit-vs-pacers">Thanasis Antetokounmpo will likely miss the entire 2024-2025 season</a> but is still a name the Bucks are considering bringing back.</p><p>Antetokounmpo is being contemplated by general manager Jon Horst <a href="https://x.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1847636322904604901" rel="noopener">due to his locker room presence</a>, per NBA reporter Keith Smith. Milwaukee is currently over the roster limit but Smith added that they are considering trading third-year guard MarJon Beauchamp to clear up space. The Bucks are reportedly examining the market for a perimeter defender if they decide against bringing back Antetokounmpo.</p><p>Antetokounmpo’s Achilles injury was suffered in practice at the end of the 2023-2024 season. Due to his condition, the 32-year-old was unable to join his brothers on the Greece national team during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.</p><p>Throughout his six-year career in the NBA, Antetokounmpo has never averaged more than 3.6 points per game in a single season. That tally came in the 2021-2022 season when he also recorded a career-high 9.9 minutes per game and six starts. Since that year, Antetokounmpo has yet to record another start and has only appeared in a combined 71 regular season games.</p><h2>Bucks’ 2024-2025 preseason roster</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Thanasis-Antetokounmpo.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>On the heels of an embarrassing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-most-to-blame-for-disappointing-playoff-series-loss-to-pacers">first-round exit courtesy of the Indiana Pacers</a> in the 2024 playoffs, the Bucks are still in the process of finalizing their 2024-2025 roster. As of Oct. 19, the team is currently one player over the league maximum of 18 players, a limit that includes three on two-way contracts.</p><p>With 19 players currently on the Bucks’ offseason roster, Milwaukee still needs to clear at least one name before opening night. If the team decides to welcome Antetokounmpo back into its organization, two current players would need to either get traded or released.</p><p>The Bucks have not given any indication on who they plan on releasing but Beauchamp has become an obvious candidate along with Anzejs Pasecniks, Liam Robbins and Ryan Rollins. Pasecniks and Rollins are the Bucks’ current two-way player along with third-year guard Stanley Umude.
