Despite his Cavs’ lowly 122-110 loss to a severely short-handed Portland Trail Blazers squad on the second night of a back-to-back, Bryant provided plenty of pop and fight off the bench in his best outing yet.</p><p>“We talk about a guy who hasn’t gotten consistent minutes,” Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said postgame. “I’ve been dripping his minutes in, and [Wednesday], I just felt like, man, we need his energy, and we just kind of went with it. So that bodes well. You’re playing big games; that guy’s played in big games. He’s deserved to play earlier, quite honestly. So I’m glad we went with him. I was really happy. No one works harder on our team than him.”</p><p>Bryant hasn’t played all that much, but when he has, the physicality has picked up. Whether it’s been an intense block, a ferocious dunk, or a textbook box out, he’s made the most of the little time he’s gotten. On Wednesday, he emphatically swatted a Duop Reath dunk attempt and hit timely shots during a comeback. The veteran big man was visibly pumped up and egged the crowd on to get Rocket Arena going.</p><p>He scored 14 points, pulled down six boards, and had two rejections in 13 minutes.</p><p>“I’ve always tried to pride myself on giving that energy, contagious energy to my teammates in a great way,” Bryant said. “I’m just happy my guys are allowing me to do that for them. Being out there, I tell those guys I’ve got their backs, and I feel like they believe me, and I feel like they know that for sure.”</p><p>With Larry Nance Jr. sidelined with a right calf strain, Bryant will have opportunities to play more. That’ll help him find his jump shot in addition to the point-blankers, which happened against Portland with a season-high three triples on four attempts.</p><p>“It energizes me because I finally saw one go in after being in the gym for hours,” Bryant said. “I think it gives the team some confidence, too, when you’ve got a big out there that can go in the paint and also step out and hit the three.”</p><p>If the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-jaylon-tyson-cleveland-cruise-control-approach">Cavs are going to turn off cruise control</a>, Bryant’s presence can undoubtedly be a part of the solution. It starts in the huddles during timeouts and in the locker room.</p><p>“Just keep playing,” Bryant said of his message. “The game isn’t going to be perfect sometimes, and sometimes there’s going to be ups and downs, but we’ve still got to keep fighting. We’ve still got to keep playing and just try and get that joy back.”</p><p>Welcomed with open arms, Bryant appreciates that the Cavs <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIIJj8vdv7M" rel="noopener">recognize his importance</a>.</p><p>“It feels great, especially coming with a team that’s had success before I’ve gotten here,” Bryant said. “For me, I’m just trying to jell and just trying to bring some contagious energy and be effective as much as I can with a team that’s had so much firepower for years. I’m just trying to find my way to help improve it.</p><p>“It’s very optimistic right there. It’s still technically early in the season. We can still figure this out. We’re going on the right path. It is never going to be perfect. We’ve still got to keep going on that pathway right there, the 82-game season. It’s very grueling. It’s a long season. But all of this builds up until the end of February, the end of March, and going into the playoffs and everything. While these games are usually as close to meaningless as possible, teams always want to start the season off as well as possible — with a victory. Alas, Thomas Bryant, one of the Cavs’ <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-cleveland-thomas-bryant-1-year-contract" rel="noopener">offseason acquisitions</a>, could not have had a worse final few seconds than he did as he couldn’t score the winning basket in what ended up being a 118-117 loss to their division rival.</p><p>With the Cavs down by one, they got a defensive stop with around five seconds remaining in the game. Bryant then pushed the ball in semi-transition, only for his game-winning attempt to be stuffed at the rim by Bulls forward Dalen Terry.</p><p>It looked like time had expired, but the referees reviewed the footage and brought back a few seconds on the game clock. The Cavs then proceeded to draw up an excellent play with less than a second remaining, freeing up Bryant on a lob play. The team’s starters on the night (with Jaylon Tyson in Garland’s place) played 18 minutes, with De’Andre Hunter leading the team in scoring with 17 points.</p><p>Craig Porter Jr. made his case to start in Garland’s place, as he tallied 17 points of his own in 18 minutes off the bench. There might be some matchups where head coach Kenny Atkinson would prefer to start Porter over Tyson (with Garland out) for more ballhandling and playmaking, but Tyson could be the favorite to start if Garland’s not yet healthy to start the regular season due to his 3-and-D contributions.</p><p>As for Bryant, he finished the game with six points, two rebounds, and two assists. He averaged just under seven points and four rebounds, extending his range to the three-point line even more with a career-high 2.3 attempts per night.</p><p>Despite not playing many minutes, Bryant was a dependable, versatile big man for Rick Carlisle and Indiana in the playoffs last year. He came in for significant stretches, knocking down critical shots from the corner and committing fouls that made opponents earn their points. Cavs fans may unfortunately remember one of his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-fans-shambles-after-game-5-collapse">best stretches of the postseason in Game 5</a> in Cleveland, where Bryant couldn’t miss his mid-range shots and scored nine points in 10:44.</p><p>He also had a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the arc when the Pacers eliminated the New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.</p><p>Bryant should provide even more depth and bring an element of nastiness to Cleveland’s frontcourt. While the Cavs have Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, Larry Nance Jr., and Dean Wade in the fold, an extra proven body is always a welcome addition to the locker room.</p><p>The Cavs are openly pursuing a championship, and having Bryant, who just played in the NBA Finals, in the mix certainly won’t hurt their situation.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

At 28, he is widely considered the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-thomas-bryant-drops-truth-on-testing-nba-free-agency-miami-return">best NBA big man free agent left on the market</a>. Still, his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/move-washington-wizards-shouldve-made-2025-nba-offseason">presence in New York</a> <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/where-knicks-stand-signing-malcolm-brogdon-9122025" rel="noopener">has little practical impact</a> on the team’s immediate plans.</p><p>The Knicks like Bryant. But they already have three rotation centers in Karl-Anthony Towns, Mitchell Robinson, and Ariel Hukporti. That depth leaves no clear path for Bryant, even if the front office values him. The Knicks can invite him to camp, but barring a trade or unexpected roster shakeup, there is simply no room to slot him into regular minutes.</p><h2><b>The Knicks are building around proven veterans</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/TB-Knicks-1.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>New York’s offseason moves have been centered elsewhere. The signing of Malcolm Brogdon on a one-year non-guaranteed deal gives the club needed point guard depth. When healthy, Brogdon has been reliable, averaging 15.3 points and 3.6 assists over his nine-year career. Landry Shamet re-signed with the team, while Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele also joined the roster.</p><p>The Knicks are expected to allow training camp battles to determine how to handle final roster spots. They have always valued Deuce McBride highly, making a trade involving him unlikely, while other young players such as Pacôme Dadiet or Tyler Kolek could theoretically be moved to make room. For now, the organization is projected to sign rookie Mohamed Diawara to a minimum deal and maintain enough flexibility to add a veteran later in the season under prorated cap rules.</p><p>Bryant’s situation highlights the reality of a crowded frontcourt. Towns was an All-NBA performer last season but needs defensive support, which Robinson often provides when healthy. Robinson remains both vital and unpredictable due to his injury history and looming free agency. Hukporti, meanwhile, is expected to compete for minutes as a developmental piece.</p><p>The Knicks’ admiration for Bryant does not change those dynamics. He may be a quality veteran, but for a team with depth at center and more pressing concerns elsewhere, his chances of playing a meaningful role remain slim.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That sh*t annoying lol.”</p><p>The 6-foot-8, 250-pounder has gotten consistent playing time as Jalen Duren’s backup this season. Stewart averaged 5.5 points on 52.2% shooting with six rebounds, and 1.3 blocks across 20.6 minutes per game going into Wednesday night’s 133-119 loss. His block average leads the team, while Duren is second with 1.2.</p><p>While Stewart has been a valuable rim protector for Detroit this season, he won’t do his team any favors by getting ejected going forward.
