He now writes about sports instead as a form of therapy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cavs News</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Tuesday night, the <a href="https://cavsnation.com/news/cavs-news-isaac-okoro-shares-heartfelt-moment-with-ex-teammates" rel="noopener">Cleveland Cavaliers opened up their exhibition season</a> with a contest against the Chicago Bulls. While these games are usually as close to meaningless as possible, teams always want to start the season off as well as possible — with a victory. Alas, Thomas Bryant, one of the Cavs’ <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-cleveland-thomas-bryant-1-year-contract" rel="noopener">offseason acquisitions</a>, could not have had a worse final few seconds than he did as he couldn’t score the winning basket in what ended up being a 118-117 loss to their division rival.</p><p>With the Cavs down by one, they got a defensive stop with around five seconds remaining in the game. Bryant then pushed the ball in semi-transition, only for his game-winning attempt to be stuffed at the rim by Bulls forward Dalen Terry.</p><p>It looked like time had expired, but the referees reviewed the footage and brought back a few seconds on the game clock. The Cavs then proceeded to draw up an excellent play with less than a second remaining, freeing up Bryant on a lob play. The team’s starters on the night (with Jaylon Tyson in Garland’s place) played 18 minutes, with De’Andre Hunter leading the team in scoring with 17 points.</p><p>Craig Porter Jr. made his case to start in Garland’s place, as he tallied 17 points of his own in 18 minutes off the bench. There might be some matchups where head coach Kenny Atkinson would prefer to start Porter over Tyson (with Garland out) for more ballhandling and playmaking, but Tyson could be the favorite to start if Garland’s not yet healthy to start the regular season due to his 3-and-D contributions.</p><p>As for Bryant, he finished the game with six points, two rebounds, and two assists. He averaged just under seven points and four rebounds, extending his range to the three-point line even more with a career-high 2.3 attempts per night.</p><p>Despite not playing many minutes, Bryant was a dependable, versatile big man for Rick Carlisle and Indiana in the playoffs last year. He came in for significant stretches, knocking down critical shots from the corner and committing fouls that made opponents earn their points. Cavs fans may unfortunately remember one of his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-fans-shambles-after-game-5-collapse">best stretches of the postseason in Game 5</a> in Cleveland, where Bryant couldn’t miss his mid-range shots and scored nine points in 10:44.</p><p>He also had a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the arc when the Pacers eliminated the New York Knicks in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.</p><p>Bryant should provide even more depth and bring an element of nastiness to Cleveland’s frontcourt. While the Cavs have Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, Larry Nance Jr., and Dean Wade in the fold, an extra proven body is always a welcome addition to the locker room.</p><p>The Cavs are openly pursuing a championship, and having Bryant, who just played in the NBA Finals, in the mix certainly won’t hurt their situation.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

At 28, he is widely considered the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-thomas-bryant-drops-truth-on-testing-nba-free-agency-miami-return">best NBA big man free agent left on the market</a>. Still, his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/washington-wizards/move-washington-wizards-shouldve-made-2025-nba-offseason">presence in New York</a> <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/where-knicks-stand-signing-malcolm-brogdon-9122025" rel="noopener">has little practical impact</a> on the team’s immediate plans.</p><p>The Knicks like Bryant. But they already have three rotation centers in Karl-Anthony Towns, Mitchell Robinson, and Ariel Hukporti. That depth leaves no clear path for Bryant, even if the front office values him. The Knicks can invite him to camp, but barring a trade or unexpected roster shakeup, there is simply no room to slot him into regular minutes.</p><h2><b>The Knicks are building around proven veterans</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/TB-Knicks-1.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>New York’s offseason moves have been centered elsewhere. The signing of Malcolm Brogdon on a one-year non-guaranteed deal gives the club needed point guard depth. When healthy, Brogdon has been reliable, averaging 15.3 points and 3.6 assists over his nine-year career. Landry Shamet re-signed with the team, while Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele also joined the roster.</p><p>The Knicks are expected to allow training camp battles to determine how to handle final roster spots. They have always valued Deuce McBride highly, making a trade involving him unlikely, while other young players such as Pacôme Dadiet or Tyler Kolek could theoretically be moved to make room. For now, the organization is projected to sign rookie Mohamed Diawara to a minimum deal and maintain enough flexibility to add a veteran later in the season under prorated cap rules.</p><p>Bryant’s situation highlights the reality of a crowded frontcourt. Towns was an All-NBA performer last season but needs defensive support, which Robinson often provides when healthy. Robinson remains both vital and unpredictable due to his injury history and looming free agency. Hukporti, meanwhile, is expected to compete for minutes as a developmental piece.</p><p>The Knicks’ admiration for Bryant does not change those dynamics. His block average leads the team, while Duren is second with 1.2.</p><p>While Stewart has been a valuable rim protector for Detroit this season, he won’t do his team any favors by getting ejected going forward. I love the Miami Heat personally, I love the way that their culture is, the coaching staff, and the guys that they have around each other. While playing time was already sparse for Bryant <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-why-kevin-love-had-no-doubt-about-re-signing-with-miami">last season with Miami,</a> he said that any team has a ton of big-men on their roster, but he fills in a need that the organization is looking for.</p><p>“For me, it’s just like there is a lot of centers on any team, it’s all about finding your way, your niche, and everything on what the team needs from you,” Bryant said. “For me personally, I got great feedback from the from guys in Miami and just knowing that there are the other guys out there, of course everybody’s out there competing but for me, it’s just seeing the guys are there and seeing what this organization brings to the table and everything. It was a complete outing for the Heat as the starting lineup did their job, but it was the second unit or the bench that over-exceeded and led to the win.</p><p>While players like rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr. continues to impress, it was the likes of Thomas Bryant and Jamal Cain that were the “X-factors” that propelled the Heat to victory. As a whole, Miami had 45 bench points.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-has-blunt-review-of-win-vs-hornets-after-horrible-basketball" rel="noopener">Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra spoke</a> to the media after the game and complimented players like Cain and especially Bryant who don’t get their name call often, but when they do, they maximize their opportunities. He credits the bench players grit and fortitude to stay ready.</p><p>“It’s never easy in this league for any player, when you’re not necessarily consistently in the rotation and then all of a sudden your number is called,” Spoelstra said. “You better have done a lot of work to prepare and be ready for the opportunity. You see that slip away from so many players in this league. They get frustrated, then they pout, then they’re not ready when their number is called and then they play poorly, and then it’s done.”</p><p>As Spoelstra alluded to, Bryant’s chance for game-time minutes have been sparse, even with star Bam Adebayo out, one would think the former Washington Wizard and Los Angeles Lakers big-man would play more. At the end of the day, when he was called into the game in the second quarter Wednesday, he made an immediate impact.</p><h2><b>Bryant talks about “staying ready”</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/bryant.jpg"></figure><p>In the second period alone, he would score seven points and collect five rebounds, two of those being on the offensive glass resulting in scores. He said to the media following the game that he’s always staying ready.</p><p>“Always just staying ready, being a professional about it,” Bryant said. “Just going in day in and day out keeping the same routine and just being aware and mentally engaged in the game as it goes on, so whenever my time is called I can be ready.”</p><p>Spoelstra touted high praise for Bryant after the performance and said he understood that others on the team have that “continuity” which is why he hasn’t been getting too much playing time. However, he mentioned if he didn’t have those minutes Wednesday, the game could’ve possibly went different.</p><p>“You’re really happy for Thomas even in this kind of moment because he hasn’t let any of that seep in,” Spoelstra continued. “He just continues to work, and he understands that there’s a lot of continuity with this group and he’s trying to fast track to learn how we do things. He’s been really diligent behind the scenes and he had great minutes [Wednesday]. If he didn’t have those minutes, then who knows where the game could have done?”</p><h2>The Heat big-man bringing that “contagious energy”</h2><p>In total, Bryant scored 11 points and recorded nine rebounds. So I’m just trying to give it to my teammates in an infectious way that brings us life and energy for me and my teammates out there.”</p><h2><b>Jamal Cain also showing out</b></h2><p>The same goes for the 24-year old Cain who also had a solid night off the bench where he scored 14 points. Cain has been an interesting prospect as he lights up the G-League and is trying to translate that explosiveness to the NBA. His simple mindset is being prepared for when his name is called.</p><p>“I’ve been training for it, I’ve been practicing hard just getting ready for this moment,” Cain said. “So when they came to me, I just wanted to help my team in any way that I can.”</p><p>However, Cain is humbled and acknowledged to the media after the game that he still has much to learn. Instead, he composes himself like a veteran, and it also shows in the way he plays. It’s important to acknowledge that a good performance in the preseason won’t always translate to the regular season, but it’s hard to not see success when watching Jaquez.</p><p>In more than 23 minutes of play against Charlotte, he scored 13 points and collected seven rebounds. He looked comfortable in every facet, including with his footwork in the paint, which resulted resulted in multiple baskets. Spoelstra was impressed with his performance, citing some influences that Jaquez has made an effort to recreate.</p><p>“I think without giving the obvious comparison, he’s watched a great deal of Kobe [Bryant] and Jimmy [Butler]. I think it takes any unique person to be that observant and then have that kind of patience to be able to work on something,” Spoelstra said. “Particularly as a young player. You know, most young players are sped up and they’re trying to do everything so fast. As the Heat’s coach said after the game, he had a presence in the paint that made him control the glass on both ends of the floor.</p><p>“We’re all encouraged by his physical presence in the paint, but he has exceptional touch as well. He’s got a variety of different kind of jump pokes or finishes at the rim,” Spoelstra said. “He’s been historically a very good finisher in the paint. So this is not something new. And it fits a need that we felt like we were searching for. He was picked up by the Washington Wizards as a free agent, and it was there that he began a bit of a mentorship with Russell Westbrook that <a href="https://www.latimes.com./sports/lakers/story/2023-01-10/lakers-anthony-davis-thomas-bryant-combination-dominant-frontcourt?utm_source=pocket_reader" rel="noopener">has carried over</a> to the Lakers as per Dan Woike of The LA Times.</p><p>“What he used to tell me was to always stay prepared and always train like it was for a game,” Bryant said. “One thing I took from him was the amount of preparation he did, whether it was before practice, after practice, before games and after games. He always took great, great care of his body. And that’s what I always got from him too. The recovery needs to be. . .as much as you do out there on the court, you need to recover as much as you can as well.”</p><p>Russell Westbrook was one of the players who showed Thomas Bryant the most support after he tore his ACL while with the Wizards.</p><p>“I love it. I just love seeing him compete,” Westbrook said. “He’s a passionate kid and he wants to compete at the highest level. And I want to make the game easy for him so he can show his worth and show what he’s made of. And that’s part of my job.”</p><p>On the season, Bryant is averaging 13.0 points per game and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 66.1 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from three-point range. The 25-year-old ended up scoring what proved to be a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-la-react-wild-final-play-win-vs-wizards">game-winning dunk</a> off of a LeBron James assist. It wasn’t a pretty play, but that last-second flush proved to be the difference for the Lakers.</p><p>After the win, Bryant opened up about his mindset during the final moments of Sunday’s win. The 6-foot-10 center knew that he just had to be ready as LeBron held the ball in his hands for one final play:</p><p>“I knew if LeBron had an open lane <a href="https://www.sunherald.com/sports/nba/article270219422.html">I just had to make myself available</a>, luckily it went my way right there and got the easy dunk to put us up two,” Bryant said, via Alex Kirschenbaum of the SunHerald.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Tie game. This was Bryant’s first double-double of the campaign in what was his third start for the Lakers. Anthony Davis was out of action in this one and coach Darvin Ham called on Bryant to get the spot start.</p><p>It was another strong performance from Thomas Bryant, who was coming off a season-high 21-point performance against the Denver Nuggets. For his part, Bryant is just happy to take advantage of the opportunity that he’s being given right now:</p><p>“I think [my play from half-to-half] progressed pretty well,” Bryant said. “For me I know I missed some easy ones, but I just have to keep playing, it’s a game of ups and downs. First half was down, second half was up, luckily in my favor, so it helped us get the win. So I’m happy for it.</p><p>“For me I don’t take it as putting pressure on myself as a big opportunity, I put the pressure on myself because I know I can make those shots, and I can make those consistently. I can’t miss those. It’s the way of the game, sometimes I miss them sometimes I get them, but I’m proud of how I responded in the second half in just turning everything around. Defensively I feel like I was out there causing some problems, using my hands.”</p><p>After missing the first part of the season due to injury, Thomas Bryant has now played 15 games for the Lakers thus far. During that stretch, he’s averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bryanth01.html">9.9 points</a> and 4.6 rebounds per game.
