The Mavs receive Quentin Grimes in return.</p><p>Hardaway enjoyed a respectable start to the 2023-24 season but began to lose playing time in the playoffs. As a result, his future in Dallas became cloudy at best. Hardaway’s father, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-tim-hardaway-sr-adds-tim-hardaway-jr-trade-buzz">Tim Hardaway Sr., made it clear </a>that they were looking for a new opportunity.</p><p>So who won this trade? How did the Mavericks fare in the deal? Without further ado, let’s grade the trade.</p><h2><b>Mavericks land Quentin Grimes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Quentin-Grimes-warms-up-before-Pistons-Knicks-game.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Mavs surrendered quite a bit to land Grimes. However, they did not give away any first-round picks and Dallas was already rumored to be interested in trading Hardaway. Acquiring a player such as Grimes, who is only 24 years old and features intriguing potential, projects to be a solid addition.</p><p>Grimes was acquired this past season by Detroit after playing for the New York Knicks since 2021. Overall, he averaged 7.3 points per game on 37.2 percent field goal and 33.8 percent three-point shooting.</p><p>Grimes has displayed signs of becoming a truly reliable defender in the NBA. The Mavericks are certainly hopeful that he will develop consistency with his three-point shot. If Grimes fulfills his potential, he could emerge as a three-and-D threat.</p><p>It is also worth noting that Grimes is from Texas.</p><h2><b>Tim Hardaway Jr. heads to Detroit</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Tim-Hardaway-Jr.-takes-a-shot-during-NBA-Finals.jpg"><figcaption>Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Mavs sent Hardaway and three second-round picks to the Pistons. Either way, Hardaway will receive a new opportunity.</p><p>Hardaway played in Dallas from 2018-2024. He was always capable of getting hot in any game and making a serious scoring impact. Hardaway, however, also dealt with inconsistency.</p><p>Still, he enjoyed a number of memorable moments with the team. His time with the Mavericks did not end how he would have liked, as Hardaway started losing minutes during the 2024 postseason.</p><p>Overall, he averaged 14.4 points per outing on 40.2 percent field goal and 35.3 percent three-point shooting during the 2023-24 campaign. It was an up-and-down season for Hardaway, as he looked like a potential Sixth Man of the Year candidate early in the season. However, his second-half struggles led to Hardaway finishing just ninth in voting.</p><h2><b>Trade grades</b></h2><p>The trade makes sense for both sides. The Pistons receive three picks as they continue to rebuild their roster. Dallas, meanwhile, moves on from Hardaway and receives a promising young player in return. They also added some valuable financial flexibility.</p><p>If Hardaway stays in Detroit, he will be a quality veteran presence for an otherwise young team. If not, the Pistons will still have three picks as a result of the deal.</p><p>It is difficult to complain about this trade for either side. In return, Dallas gets guard Quentin Grimes. The news was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>“Dallas has traded Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks to Detroit for Quentin Grimes, sources tell ESPN.”</p><p>Hardaway Jr came to the Mavericks in 2019 as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade from the New York Knicks. The former first-round pick immediately became a part of the Mavs’ core as a key contributor off the bench alongside Luka Doncic. Hardaway’s shooting and scoring became an important part of the team.</p><p>Over the last few years, though, Hardaway was slowly demoted deeper to the bench as his shooting waned and other aspects of his play regressed. The Mavericks have<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-tim-hardaway-jr-roasted-embarrassing-game-3-performance"> used Hardaway sparingly last season,</a> buried in the depth chart come the playoffs. Still, his role in helping elevate Dallas as a consistent playoff performer is important to recognize.</p><p>As for Grimes, the former Knicks guard was traded to the Pistons in the middle of the 2023-24 season. Fans might recall Grimes as a potential breakout for New York when he was there. While he suffered some regression last season, a change of scenery could help Grimes break out. Dallas barely managed to avoid the sweep, but they ultimately lost 4-1.</p><p>Dallas will now look to make it back to the Finals, fueled by this incredible playoff run. After a disappointing first impression, the duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving looks to be better than ever before. They also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-nico-harrison-dereck-lively-ii-all-star">found a few gems</a> in rookie center Dereck Lively and trade deadline acquisition PJ Washington. The Mavericks have seemingly figured out the right way to complement Doncic after years of failed experiments.</p><p>Grimes will hopefully help supplement the Mavericks’ struggling wing rotation. Hardaway Jr was unplayable at multiple points during the playoff run, due to his poor defense and mediocre shot-making. The strategy of staggering Doncic and Irving’s minutes really only works if you have a wing defender that can ease the pressure off the stars on defense. Josh Green helps in that regard, but Grimes is theoretically an improved version of him.</p><p>Last season was the first time the Mavericks have made it back to the Finals since their fateful 2011 championship run. This year, Dallas failed to capture the Larry O’Brien trophy, running into the brick wall that was the Celtics. The addition of Kyrie Irving along with the constant rise of Luka Doncic also did not help him at all. Now, it looks like he spent his final years with them and could be ready to move. A squad that would love to have him is the Washington Wizards.</p><p>There have been a lot of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-pistons-tim-hardaway-jr-trade">suitors knocking on the Mavericks’ door</a> for Tim Hardaway Jr. He has reportedly drawn the interest of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Detroit Pistons. <a href="https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/1806088413981839685" rel="noopener">The latest contender</a> in trying to acquire him surfaced — the Wizards, per Marc Stein.</p><p>A lot of this has to do with the great relationship that the Mavericks and Wizards front office has. They just recently worked together during the trade deadline. Daniel Gafford was traded for Richaun Holmes and the 2024 first-round pick which originated from the Oklahoma City Thunder. So, this partnership could spill over to the offseason with Hardaway Jr. as the main trade asset that the Mavericks need to let go of.</p><p>After all, the veteran could still produce solid numbers given the right minutes. He notched 14.4 points on a 40.2% clip from all three levels of scoring when the Luka Doncic-led squad still used him a lot. His three-point acumen is also still alive and strong. Those shots from beyond the arc are still seeing the bottom of the net 35.3% of the time.</p><p>Not to mention, the biggest asset that he has over any other player is his durability. Hardaway Jr. played in 79 games for Jason Kidd’s Mavericks last season. He was able to constantly produce for them despite having meager minutes.</p><h2><b>The big reason why the Mavericks player could be heading to the Wizards</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Dallas-Mavericks-forward-Tim-Hardaway-Jr.jpg"><figcaption>© Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Jason Kidd and the Mavericks have<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-tim-hardaway-sr-adds-tim-hardaway-jr-trade-buzz"> made Tim Hardaway Jr.’s role very small.</a> In their NBA Finals clash with the Boston Celtics, he only got to play big minutes during garbage time in their blowout Game 4 victory. Other than that, his production was not fit for the schemes that the Mavericks were running. Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have just playing a different brand of basketball since then.</p><p>In fact, Hardaway Jr.’s production took a big hit after the trade deadline. He only scored 8.6 points on a 35.9% clip. It is by no means great but that number took an ever deeper plunge in the postseason. The Mavericks forward’s numbers were nearly cut in half as he only contributed 4.4 points to the squad.</p><p>The Mavericks player is not the only one taking issue with all of this. Even his father, the legendary point guard who revolutionized flashy moves in the league, outlined his frustration. Hardaway enjoyed some memorable moments with Dallas but fell out of the rotation in the postseason. One major asset they can use is Tim Hardaway Jr. and his expiring contract worth $16 million for next season.</p><p>In the latest episode of Brian Windhorst and the Hoop Collective, Tim MacMahon said that Hardaway is likely to be <a href="https://www.youtube.com/live/s0CGQZwhYVc?si=FY9sQ6ocjafHA9rx&amp;t=3078" rel="noopener">used as a trade chip</a>, along with draft picks, in a deal that will upgrade Dallas’ roster.</p><p>MacMahon said the following: “Come draft night, they will have two first-round picks and then a couple of swaps. Let’s just call it like it is, they’ve been trying to trade Tim Hardaway Jr. since the ink was dry on that deal. Well, now, it’s an expiring contract and it might actually have some value in the trade market…I mean, Josh Green might have some appeal around the league. I’d say Maxi’s pretty deeply rooted into the franchise.”</p><p>Windhorst noted that combining the contracts of Hardaway and Kleber gives the Mavs an amount of salary they could use to add a star-level player.</p><p>The Mavericks making the Finals should serve as motivation to be aggressive in making moves, not complacent because they had already won the conference. The Western Conference is still very good and could get better. The Mavs have to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-luka-doncic-dallas-2025-nba-finals">keep their foot on the gas</a> and take advantage of the core they have right now.</p><h2><b>Mavericks could trade Tim Hardaway Jr. as contract expires</b></h2><p>Since the Mavericks are over the cap, they will have to rely on <a href="https://www.capsheets.com/" rel="noopener">exceptions and trades</a> to upgrade their roster. They have some trade exceptions worth $4.9 million and $4 million, respectively, on top of the $5.1 million mid-level exception, per CapSheets.com. Unless they strike great luck with a cheap signing, they probably won’t be adding any majorly notable talent through those avenues.</p><p>Hardaway finished ninth in voting for the Sixth Man of the Year award, continuing his high-shooting-volume ways. He would fit decently on many teams as a floor spacer but his value in a trade would come mostly from his expiring contract. Of course, Dallas would have to include other assets in a trade.</p><p>The Mavericks don’t have a ton of assets to trade but they do have Green, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, an extra second-round pick in 2025 (their own and one belonging to the Toronto Raptors) and Lively, though they probably aren’t keen on trading him unless it’s for a bug upgrade. They can also offer swaps on their first-rounders in 2025 and 2026.</p><p>Since the new CBA limits roster movement among the top spending teams (which the Mavs are close to being), they have to make the right decision on who to trade for. However, Tim Hardaway Jr. has played an impactful role as well.</p><p>Hardaway is inconsistent at times. He scored just two points in Game 1 before dropping 17 points in Game 2. During his Game 2 performance, Hardaway shot 6-10 from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc.</p><p>In Game 3, Hardaway contributed eight points. He offers three-point shooting prowess that is certainly important for the Mavs. However, he finds ways to impact the game in other ways as well. Mavs head coach Jason Kidd <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1790175116518662223" rel="noopener">discussed</a> Hardaway’s impact before Monday’s Game 4.</p><p>“It’s great to have Timmy (Tim Hardaway Jr.) back… We need Timmy to knock down shots,” Kidd said. “And then on the defensive end he competes and gives us a chance to rebound or be able to switch. To have him back and the way he’s playing of late, we’re gonna need that tonight.”</p><p>Hardaway missed most of the Mavericks’ first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers due to an injury. Overall, he has appeared in five postseason games so far during the 2024 NBA playoffs. On Monday after practice, head coach Jason Kidd provided injury updates for Game 1 of the Mavericks-Thunder series.</p><p>Luka Doncic is probable for Game 1 with a knee sprain. Tim Hardaway Jr., who suffered a sprained ankle injury during the Mavericks’ series against the Los Angeles Clippers, has been upgraded to available for Game 1 versus the Thunder.</p><p>Hardaway was seemingly on the verge of possibly returning against the Clippers before it was revealed that he had suffered an injury setback. The Mavericks have not had a game since clinching a first-round series victory on Friday, however. The rest over the weekend has proven to be beneficial for both Doncic and Hardaway.</p><p>“They’ve been great, they look great,” Kidd <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1787539305264550325" rel="noopener">said</a> of Doncic and Hardaway. “They look like they are ready to go.”</p><p>Meanwhile, Maxi Kleber and Olivier-Maxence Prosper are both listed as out for Game 1. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dealt-crushing-maxi-kleber-injury-update-after-eliminating-clippers">Kleber is battling a shoulder sprain</a> while Prosper is dealing with an ankle sprain.</p><p>On Monday, Kidd was asked about the importance of Hardaway returning amid Kleber’s injury.</p><p>“It’s unfortunate to lose Maxi,” Kidd said. “Maxi was playing well for us defensively and offensively. I think he was our best three-point shooter (during the Clippers series). But looking at getting Timmy back is a good thing. We’re gonna need Timmy coming off the bench to be able to give us some offense. But also his experience of being in the playoffs is going to come into play. As a result, he missed Games 3-6 against Los Angeles.</p><p>Hardaway has been inconsistent at times this year. With that being said, he is one of the better three-point shooters on the team. As Kidd mentioned, Hardaway’s postseason experience will be important as well.</p><p>Oklahoma City was one of the best teams in the NBA all season long. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in an MVP candidate while Chet Holmgren enjoyed a strong rookie campaign. Finding a way to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-shai-gilgeous-alexander-chet-holmgren-thunder-nba-playoffs">contain the Thunder stars</a> will be a challenge for Dallas.</p><p>The Mavericks hold the experience advantage, though. Kyrie Irving has played in no shortage of postseason games. Even Luka Doncic, who is still only 25 years old, has plenty of playoff experience.</p><p>Jason Kidd has dealt with the pressure of the NBA playoffs both as a player and a coach. Doncic was questionable ahead of Game 4 but ultimately ended up playing. Tim Hardaway Jr., meanwhile, suffered a setback during the Dallas Mavericks scrimmage on Tuesday. Kidd said he was questionable for Game 5 with an ankle injury, though <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2024-04-30_04PM.pdf" rel="noopener">he’s ruled out</a> in the latest injury report.</p><p>Mavs head coach Jason Kidd confirmed that Doncic participated in all parts of practice.</p><p>“Everything,” Kidd responded when asked what Luka was able to do on Tuesday.</p><p>It is an unfortunate setback for Hardaway. The Mavs have struggled mightily from beyond the arc. Hardaway is inconsistent at times, but when he finds his rhythm he is one of the more dangerous threats from 3-point range.</p><p>Dante Exum, who played well during the regular season but has not seen much action in the NBA playoffs, will play a big role in Game 5 according to Kidd.</p><p>“Yeah” Kidd said when asked if Exum will make an impact in the series moving forward. “We we’re hoping that Timmy was going to get back, we will see how he feels tomorrow. Looking at Exum, I think he’s going to have a big part in Game 5. Up to this point he hasn’t been up to his standards. We trust that he’s going to be really good in Game 5.”</p><p>This is an important note from Kidd. Again, the Mavs have been unable to find their groove from deep and amid another Hardaway absence, Exum could play a role in helping Dallas from beyond the three-point line.</p><p>As for Doncic, the Mavericks are hoping their superstar can get things going offensively. Efficiency was the concern, however, as Doncic went just 10-24 from the field and 1-9 from deep. Kyrie Irving <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-luka-doncic-admissions-dallas-game-4-clippers">addressed Doncic’s struggles after the game</a>.</p><p>“He’s a young kid in the playoffs going against a team that beat him twice, so there’s a little bit of a mental fatigue there as well,” Irving said Sunday of Doncic. “But I think this is what makes the beauty of sports come together. We have another opportunity on Wednesday to be in LA and be better. Hopefully these next two days will be good to him… Well I know they will be good to him. We will be ready for Wednesday’s game.”</p><p>Kyrie and the Mavs still believe in Luka. Dallas has momentum following their 96-93 Game 2 victory in LA, but the Mavs are also dealing with some injury trouble. Prosper suffered a sprained ankle during practice on Thursday. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-tim-hardaway-jr-injury-clippers-game-2">Hardaway endured his ankle injury</a> on Tuesday, and Kidd said he will be “evaluated in a few days.”</p><p>Gafford is dealing with a back issue. His status for Friday is currently in question, and Kidd confirmed that the Mavericks center did not practice on Thursday. It should be noted that Kidd said Gafford is “feeling better.”</p><p>“He just watched from the sideline,” Kidd responded when asked if Gafford practiced Thursday.</p><p>These injuries are certainly far from ideal for Dallas. Gafford has played a pivotal role in the post since being acquired ahead of the trade deadline. The Mavericks are obviously hopeful that he will be ready to go before tip-off, but Gafford’s status is currently in question.</p><h2><b>Daniel Gafford questionable for Clippers-Mavericks Game 3</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Daniel-Gafford-dunks-vs-Clippers.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Kidd addressed Gafford’s potential absence as it relates to Dereck Lively II and Maxi Kleber.</p><p>“It just puts them maybe in a different situation,” Kidd said. “We’re not asking them to do anything different. I think, also looking at some other guys having to step into that role too.”</p><p>Defense told the story of Game 2. In fact, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-luka-doncic-kyrie-irving-defense-clippers-nba-playoffs">set the tone</a> on the defensive end of the floor during Tuesday’s victory. Still, Gafford’s rim-protecting prowess will be missed if he does not play on Friday.</p><p>Additionally, Doncic and Irving have developed chemistry with Gafford and Lively in terms of utilizing alley-oops. The Clippers have made an effort to protect the interior. Kidd was asked how the Mavericks can start utilizing the aforementioned alley-oops once again in this series, which is something that Gafford’s availability will play a role in determining.</p><p>“Yeah, that’s their gameplan, make Luka score,” Kidd said. “So I don’t know if we can get them (alley-oops) back, we got to take what they give us. And right now, that’s what they’re giving us is to see if Luka is going to take those shots. He’s gotta be able to make them but they’re not giving us the lob. Our quarterbacks have to take what they’re giving us.”</p><p>Lively and Gafford will still make an offensive impact if both are on the floor Friday, it just may not be via alley-oops. The TNT broadcast later revealed that Hardaway had suffered a right ankle sprain and will <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1782980628973076786" rel="noopener">miss the remainder of the game</a>.</p><p>Hardaway, a three-point threat, will be missed as Dallas looks to close out a victory in Game 2 against the Clippers in LA. Los Angeles earned a 109-97 victory in Game 1, so Game 2 is certainly crucial for the Mavericks.</p><p>Hardaway <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-tim-hardaway-jr-adversity-dallas-playoff-push">endured an up-and-down season</a> as the Mavericks sixth man in 2023-24. He unquestionably had some big moments throughout the year. On Tuesday, he had gone just 0-1 from the field in a little over six minutes of action before suffering the ankle injury.</p><p>Heading into the series, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-tim-hardaway-jr-playing-clippers-nba-playoffs-injury">Hardaway’s status was in question</a> for Game 1 because of an illness. He was ultimately made available before the first game of the series, though. Now, Dallas will just have to hope that Hardaway can return as soon as possible after suffering the ankle sprain on Tuesday night.</p><h2><b>Tim Hardaway Jr.’s injury concern as Mavericks battle Clippers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mavericks-Tim-Hardaway-Jr.-celebrates-vs.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Dallas is currently focused on winning Game 2. It has been a back-and-forth affair as the Mavericks look to return to Dallas with the series tied 1-1.</p><p>The Mavericks will provide further updates on Hardaway following Tuesday’s contest and before Game 3.</p><p>In 2023-24, Tim Hardaway Jr. averaged 14.4 points per game on 40.2 percent field goal and 35.3 percent three-point shooting. For his career, Hardaway has shot 36 percent from beyond the arc. When he is on his game, Hardaway is one of the better long-range threats on the roster. Again, however, he can be inconsistent at times.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Mavericks will need players such as Josh Green and Dante Exum to step up around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving as the series continues. Dallas will not want to strictly rely on the three-point shot, but it still is obviously a valuable weapon against this talented Clippers team.</p><p>We will continue to monitor and provide updates on Tim Hardaway Jr.’s injury status as they are made available.
