There are a lot of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-why-asa-newell-will-instantly-impact-winning-atlanta">things for Newell to be excited about</a> as he comes to a young team that is looking to compete in the Eastern Conference for years to come, and they have the talent to do so.</p><p>One player on the Hawks who will help elevate Newell’s game is Trae Young, who was present at the rookie’s press conference. Newell was asked about Young, and he mentioned that he <a href="https://x.com/_MalikATL/status/1938624925952319788" rel="noopener">had already spoken</a> to the star point guard.</p><p>“He was the first person to call me,” Newell said.</p><p>Last season, Young had the responsibility of leading the young guys on the team, and he did a good job on and off the court. He’ll have somebody else this time around to help, and Newell knows the qualities that Young can bring to the court, which can get him easy looks.</p><p>“I feel like Trae is an extremely talented point guard,” Newell said. “He can knock down shots and is a tremendous passer. I feel like I can catch a lot of lobs from him.”</p><p>With Newell’s skillset, there’s a good chance that he catches a lot of lobs from Young in the future, especially with his athletic ability.</p><h2><b>Hawks excited for the growth of Asa Newell</b></h2><p>Outside of what Newell can bring to the court with his skills, it’s his mentality and it’s who he is as a person that also made them fall in love with him as a prospect.</p><p>“His growth and development is a process where we don’t like to rush anything,” general manager Onsi Saleh said. “I trust Quin, and he’s going to lead the development of this group. We got a player that is a hard worker. He’s a winning player; he makes winning plays. You can see the freak athlete, and he does all these different things, but the court, he’s a winner.</p><p>“That’s what we’re trying to do here. Bring in guys that want to win; they compete, and we’re so fortunate to get him.”</p><p>Newell will be another addition to the Hawks’ frontcourt, which has had some improvements over the past week. The day before the Hawks drafted Newell, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">traded for Kristaps Porzingis</a>, who can stretch the floor and be a strong rim protector.</p><p>So far, the Hawks have started their offseason well, and they will continue to add more talent as free agency approaches.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

One team that could be quite busy over the next week or so is the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/thunder-news-okc-trades-no-24-pick-kings-winning-nba-title">Sacramento Kings</a>, and it sounds like Russell Westbrook is emerging as a potential target for them ahead of free agency.</p><p>Despite having a solid collection of talent at their disposal, the Kings have not been able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together in recent seasons. Earlier this offseason, the team reportedly considered making a push to acquire Trae Young in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, but they <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6452468/2025/06/26/sacramento-kings-offseason-nba-draft-2025/" rel="noopener">ultimately passed on that opportunity</a> for a handful of reasons.</p><p>“There was a push among some power-brokers for Sacramento to go after Atlanta’s Trae Young, but league sources say the Kings didn’t have interest because of his style of play (offense-first) and cost (he’s extension-eligible this summer but is slated to earn $45.9 million next season and has a player option worth $48.9 million in 2026-27),” Sam Amick of The Athletic reported.</p><h2><b>Kings targeting Russell Westbrook in free agency</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Russell-Westbrook-in-action.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With the Hawks picking up Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets, it looks like Young is staying put anyways, although the Kings don’t seem too upset about that. Instead, they have turned their attention to free agency. After it was revealed they had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-rumors-dennis-schroder-emerges-as-key-sacramento-pg-free-agency-target">interest in Dennis Schroder</a> earlier this week, Westbrook and Tyus Jones have also emerged as targets for Sacramento at the point guard position.</p><p>“League and team sources say the Kings indeed have serious interest in veteran Dennis Schröder. That is, of course, if he doesn’t get something done with the Detroit Pistons first (league sources say he’s been in talks on that front this week). Fellow free agents Tyus Jones and Russell Westbrook are also known to be options that the Kings are considering,” Amick wrote.</p><p>Westbrook isn’t the same MVP-caliber player he once was, but he still averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Denver Nuggets last season. After declining his $3.4 million player option, he could capitalize on hitting the open market, with teams like the Kings looking for someone who can conduct their offense. Is it possible this marriage has plateaued? Many have wondered if management would attempt to alter the team’s identity and trajectory by making <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-zach-lowe-drops-take-trae-young-future-atlanta">a major shake-up</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-draft-big-board-4-0-ace-bailey-vj-edgecombe-questions-latest-intel" rel="noopener">Atlanta’s actions indicate otherwise</a>, however. New general manager Onsi Saleh does not appear to be engaged in Young trade talks at this time, as he instead focuses on the No. 13 and No. 22 selections the Hawks have at their disposal going into <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-rumors-what-atlanta-seeks-in-draft-amid-trade-buzz-expected-free-agent-loss">the 2025 NBA Draft</a>.</p><p>“While some have suggested Atlanta should leverage these selections and try to move into the top 10, the Hawks appear to be comfortable adding two more young talents to build the future of their roster,” ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel reports. “Despite changes in their front office, the Hawks have not held serious Trae Young trade discussions, sources said.”</p><h2><b>Can Young lead the Hawks back into relevance?</b></h2><p>When taking into account the current squad, which contains rising talents like Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher and Dyson Daniels, one can see why the organization would want to keep Young. If Atlanta is indeed retaining the face of the franchise through this offseason, then head coach Quin Snyder must figure out how to maximize the team’s collective strengths.</p><p>Trae Young is a four-time All-Star and one of the top playmakers in the league today. He will undoubtedly produce on the floor, as evidenced by the 24.2 points, league-leading 11.6 assists and 1.2 steals he averaged last season. The 26-year-old comes with efficiency questions, however. He shot a paltry 41.1 percent from the field and posted an NBA-worst 355 turnovers. A player that has the ball in his hands as much as Young must exhibit more consistency.</p><p>He has proven himself capable of doing just that in the past, leading the Hawks to an unforeseen Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 2021. Considering Atlanta’s ostensible faith in him moving forward, he will get the opportunity to recapture that peak form in the 2025-26 season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They are coming off their first run to the Eastern Conference Finals since 2000, looking for the coach that can get them over the hump.</p><p>They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sources-leon-rose-knicks-relationships-aiding-coaching-search">attempted to request interviews</a> with the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd and Houston Rockets’ Ime Udoka, among others, but the teams rejected their advances.</p><p>Their latest attempt was towards the Hawks’ Snyder, but the Atlanta franchise followed suit with other organizations and denied New York’s request.</p><p>ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania reported the news regarding the Hawks and Knicks, as Young <a href="https://x.com/TheTraeYoung/status/1932953664936939998" rel="noopener">reacted to it</a> with a short but humorous comment.</p><p>“H*ll nahh🤣,” Young said.</p><h2><b>What’s next for Trae Young, Hawks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Atlanta-Hawks-head-coach-Quin-Snyder-talks-with-guard-Trae-Young.jpg"><figcaption>Winslow Townson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s clear that Trae Young hates the idea of head coach Quin Snyder leaving the Hawks for the Knicks, prompting his viral response.</p><p>Snyder has been Atlanta’s head coach since the 2023-24 season, keeping the team afloat in the playoff conversation for the past couple of seasons. However, they haven’t reached the postseason in his two seasons with the team after falling short in the play-in tournament.</p><p>Despite their playoff woes, Young has maintained his form as an All-Star, earning two consecutive selections on Atlanta’s behalf. This past season saw Young continue to be an elite offensive player, averaging 24.2 points, 11.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game in 76 appearances.</p><p>Young will look to have the Hawks return to their previous heights, leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, their first since 2015. He has shown he can lead the team to a deep playoff run; however, Young will need the supporting cast to be stronger in order to be a serious contender in the East.</p><p>Young has two years remaining on his current contract, with the second being a player option for the 2026-27 season. Atlanta also has to address their situations with Clint Capela, Caris LeVert, Larry Nance Jr., and Garrison Mathews. All four will be free agents this offseason.
