Moses Moody paced the team with 21 points, while Stephen Curry had 16 points. Meanwhile, Draymond Green put up a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. However, while watching the game, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young noticed Buddy Hield’s seamless fit as the sixth-man for the Warriors.</p><p>“Buddy fits perfectly with the warriors!” the Hawks guard <a href="https://x.com/TheTraeYoung/status/1846379042519257497" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X, formerly Twitter.</p><h2><b>The Warriors are cruising</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Trae-Young-trying-to-get-around-Buddy-Hield.jpg"><figcaption>© Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While it’s still preseason, the Warriors seem to be in a good place. They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-completes-klay-thompson-acquisition-in-historic-6-team-trade">lost Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-trade-plans-after-lauri-markkanen-failure-emerges">whiffed on Lauri Markkanen</a>, but Stephen Curry did sign a one-year extension.</p><p>They also filled the gaps by leaning even harder on their jump-shooting.</p><p>This renewed focus on shooting and playmaking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-complete-buddy-hield-sign-and-trade-with-76ers">netted the Warriors Buddy Hield</a> and Kyle Anderson. Moreover, they also signed De’Anthony Melton to spell Curry and provide some defense on the backcourt.</p><p>Moreover, in terms of shooting, Hield is a capable replacement for Thompson, and he may even be a better shooter at this stage of their careers. Thompson hasn’t defended at a high level since his Achilles and ACL injuries, and the Warriors didn’t sign Hield for his defense to begin with.</p><p>Hield is also a reliable decoy while Stephen Curry navigates through screens to look for an open spot behind the line. The defense will have to pick between Hield and Curry shooting, and most teams will let Hield shoot rather than the greatest three-point shooter of all time.</p><p>As a sixth man, Hield can also take on a heavier shooting load when Curry sits. However, without Curry, any competent NBA-level defense will load up on him, meaning his teammates like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-issues-andrew-wiggins-demand-klay-thompson-gone">Andrew Wiggins must also shoot more</a> to distribute the workload evenly.</p><p>This reliance on shooting will also require the Warriors to speed their game up, and they hope Melton, Anderson, and Draymond Green should provide enough defense to get them consistent stops to spark fast-breaks.</p><p>Likewise, they’ll have to rely on their center rotation of Trayce Jackson-Davis and Kevon Looney to gobble up defensive rebounds and start the offense.</p><h2><b>Possible problems</b></h2><p>The only problem with this approach might surface in the playoffs, or even before then. For instance, the Warriors might have to win shootouts with other teams, since they might <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/golden-state-warriors-2024-25-season-preview-is-steph-currys-supporting-cast-good-enough-142816317.html" rel="noopener">not have enough two-way guys</a> to wreak havoc on defense.</p><p>As constructed, the Warriors remain a dangerous team who can shoot the lights out and run other teams off the floor.</p><p>However, when the game slows down in the postseason and the shooting drops off, the lack of a difference-making player like a Markkanen or a Paul George might rear its ugly head.</p><p>Trae Young might be right about Buddy Hield’s fit with the Warriors, but is it enough to put them over contenders like the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, or Oklahoma City Thunder?</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Hawks finished the game shooting 37.2% from the field and 29.5% from three. Despite the numbers, the Hawks got a lot of good shots; they just didn’t fall. Trae Young knows that players are still trying to figure out their spots on the court, so he wasn’t even worried about his nine turnovers.</p><p>“Right now I’m trying to get everybody involved. I don’t really give a  f— about these turnovers,” Young said. “It’s the preseason. Me trying to get everybody involved is what I always try to do.”</p><p>Young is a gifted playmaker, and there’s no doubt that he’ll find his teammates, sometimes even when they’re not expecting the ball. That’s where preseason comes in to fix the small things and to be able to build chemistry on the court, for both sides of the ball.</p><p>Even though the offense wasn’t on point for the Hawks, the defense made some strides throughout the game. Most notably, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-dikembo-mutombo-feat-dyson-daniels-must-strive-to-accomplish">Dyson Daniels was the main defender</a> on Tyrese Maxey, and he made it hard for him every time he touched the ball. Maxey finished the game shooting 5-of-18 from the field.</p><p>After the game, Daniels gave his process on guarding Maxey, one of the faster guards in the NBA.</p><p>“Everyone’s different. Tyrese Maxey is super quick; he can shoot the step-back three and get under the rim,” Daniels said. “I have to judge when I can pick him up, when I can turn him. Sometimes, I try to pick him up early and get him on his back foot when he brings it up. A couple of times tonight, I made him get off the ball and make someone else bring it up, which, if I could do that, I’m doing my job.”</p><p>Young knows how it feels to be on the opposite side of that, and he praised Daniels after the game for what he’s able to do on the <a href="https://x.com/_MalikATL/status/1846013731248980251" rel="noopener">defensive side of the ball</a>.</p><p>“I see one of the best defenders in the league,” Young said. “Everytime he’s on the ball, he’s pressuring the ball. It helps our defense, it kills time off the clock. That’s what teams try to do versus us. They try to pick me up full court, try to get the ball out of my hand, and try to make me use clock before we get past halfcourt. We got one of those guys now, and he’s going to help us a lot throughout this season.”</p><h2>Hawks’ defense takes strides in loss vs. 76ers</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Trae-Young-1.jpg"><figcaption>Brett Davis-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Head coach Quin Snyder was also satisfied with the defense and how the Hawks came out to start the game.</p><p>“Dyson [Daniels] obviously is so effective on the ball, he takes so much pride in it,” Snyder said after the game. “But also, on the backline, guys were shifting. I thought we started the game out very well that way, and then there were a couple of stretches where we were back, but we weren’t communicating, and they got some stuff in transition.”</p><p>In the second game in a row, rookie Zaccharie Riscaher had a solid performance for the Hawks, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.</p><p>“One of the things that’s been fun to see with Zacch is his work ethic, and he’s got a quiet toughness to him for a 19-year-old kid. That was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/trae-young-spotted-in-new-sneaker-brand-as-adidas-deal-expires">the case for Hawks guard Trae Young</a> on Tuesday, even after playing just 21 minutes in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-zaccharie-risacher-performance-close-win-pacers">131-130 win over the Indiana Pacers</a>.</p><p>During the fourth quarter of the Hawks’ win, guard Vit Krejci fired an <a href="https://x.com/ATLHawks/status/1843830444707475555" rel="noopener">incredible full-court assist</a> with one hand, setting up Kobe Bufkin for a layup, and Tray Young hit the classic goggles celebration on the bench in response.</p><p>Young is knocking off the rust before the season gets going and had a strong night statistically, finishing with 17 points and six assists despite the limited minutes. Krejci also was impressive in 23 minutes of action as he tries to make the Hawks’ final roster at the end of the preseason, scoring seven points and dishing out six assists of his own.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-hawks-jalen-johnson-can-solidify-himself-as-trae-youngs-co-star">Hawks were led by rising star Jalen Johnson</a>, who put up a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 22 minutes. Johnson was efficient as a scorer, shooting 8-for-12 from the floor, and added three steals on the defensive end.</p><h2><b>Trae Young must take another leap if the Hawks want to contend in the East</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Trae-Young_f8002e.jpg"><figcaption>Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Hawks have come back down to Earth over the last few years since making their surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, and they need Trae Young to become one of the true superstars in the NBA for them to get back to that point. Young is already an All-Star level player, but he needs to be even better than that for a few reasons.</p><p>The first reason is the strength of the Eastern Conference. The defending champion Celtics will be very formidable once again, and it looks like the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/karl-anthony-towns-first-bucket-with-knicks-after-timberwolves-trade">Knicks have improved with the additions of Karl-Anthony Towns</a> and Mikal Bridges. The 76ers will also be very difficult to beat with Paul George in the fold.</p><p>On a more introspective note, the Hawks are relying on Young to be the level of player that can carry a team to a championship, and they know that is their quickest path to the top of the East. Young is a statistical beast — he has surpassed 25 points and 10 assists per game in each of the past two seasons –but his impact on the game has fallen slightly short of some of the true superstars in the league.</p><p>If Young can improve his efficiency as a scorer (43% from the field last season) and become a competent defender, that will go a long way towards helping him rise up the ranks in the league. I understand it’s more of a mindset thing with the defensive end,” Johnson said. “The offensive end comes easy, but defense, you gotta lock in and be willing to take those challenges guarding the 4s every night. I’m looking forward to that. One of those changes was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-hawks-pelicans-dejounte-murray-trade">trading Dejounte Murray</a>, who was Trae Young’s backcourt starting mate for the past two seasons. At the end of the day, the pairing didn’t work out in the Hawks favor, and they moved on in an attempt to find someone that fits next to Young.</p><p>Coming into the season, there are several directions the team can go when trying to find out who will be the starter next to Young in the backcourt. Here are the top three options that make the most sense.</p><h2>Bogdan Bogdanovic has experience as Hawks’ starter</h2><p>Bogdan Bogdanovic has been a starter for the Hawks several times since he’s been with the team. Good things always happen when he and Trae Young are on the floor together, mostly because of their ability to shoot threes and their chemistry playing off of one another. In the past two years, Bogdanovic has come off the bench, and last season was probably one of his best, as he should’ve been in the running for Sixth Man of the Year.</p><p>The thing with starting Bogdanovic is that even though the offense will improve, he and Young are not known for their defense. He’s also better coming off the bench, and head coach Quin Snyder may want to continue to have a spark in the second unit. If he wanted to go with experience and more offense, Bogdanovic would definitely be the top option.</p><h2>Dyson Daniels can bring defense to the Hawks lineup</h2><p>One of the players acquired in the Dejounte Murray trade was Dyson Daniels, who for the past two years in New Orleans showed flashes of potential but didn’t have much of the opportunity to shine. Luckily for him, Daniels is the exact player that the Hawks are looking for, and mainly because of his defense. If you go to any of the advanced metrics when it comes to defense, Daniels may be atop several of those lists. Daniels presents problems for opposing teams with his point-of-attack defense, and his ability to get steals, and blocks, as a guard.</p><p>Putting a defensive guard next to Daniels would be the perfect pairing, but the offense may take a dip depending on who else is in the lineup. Daniels is only a 31% three-point shooter during his career, but with a player like Young, he’d be able to get him easy looks on the perimeter. Not only could Young help Daniels, but Daniels could be the defensive partner that Young needs next to him.</p><h2>Could Zaccharie Risacher make the starting lineup?</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Zaccharie-Risacher_0fc2f9.jpg"><figcaption>Dale Zanine-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>No. 1 draft picks typically start right away, but in Zaccharie Risacher’s situation, he’s coming to a team that has veteran options ahead of them, like Dyson Daniels and Bogdan Bogdanovic. Regardless of how long he’s been in the league, one thing that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-nba-execs-zaccharie-risacher-review-will-hype-up-atlanta-fans">Risacher offers is length and shooting</a>. Those are just a few of the reasons why they drafted him, and at some point, he will be a definite starter for the team. During Media Day, Risacher was asked <a href="https://x.com/JameelahJNBA/status/1840902709555183693" rel="noopener">what it’s been like</a> so far playing with and against Young.</p><p>“It’s pretty nice playing with him. He makes your life easier, makes sure you’re in the right spot so he can pass,” Risacher said. “He’s such a great passer, so for me as a shooting guy, it’s a blessing to be able to play with him. Trying to guard him is tough, but that’s how you improve. During pickups at practices, it was super cool to be on his team and against him.”</p><p>As training camp starts, it will be important for Risacher to build chemistry not just with Young, but with the rest of his teammates as well. This season, the team has some new talent, but the goal remains the same, especially for Trae Young. On Media Day, the Hawks’ point guard was asked what his<a href="https://x.com/langleyatl/status/1840791290155303386" rel="noopener"> goals were for the season</a>, and there should be no surprise to what he said.</p><p>“My goal every year is to win. I don’t play basketball just to play; my goal is to win,” Young said. “Every night I step out there, I feel like we can win. I want to be better than we were last year. We weren’t in the playoffs, we need to be back in the playoffs this year. Regardless of how anybody looks at our team, I feel like we need to be there. It’s my job to do everything I can to be ready and also lift my teammates up as much as I can to make sure we’re all ready each and every night.”</p><p>Young has led the Hawks to the playoffs three straight seasons before missing it last season, but he also had the first serious injury of his career that kept him sidelined for an extended period of time. In all, the Hawks have added more length and shooting around Young, and that should bode well for him and how far the team goes this year.</p><p>There’s no doubt that the Eastern Conference has gotten stronger over the past few months, and the Hawks plan to be right in the middle. Although the Hawks took a step back last season when they lost their play-in tournament game against the Chicago Bulls — Atlanta had been to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons — Young has a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-2024-nba-draft-grade-for-zaccharie-risacher">new running mate in No. 1 overall draft pick Zaccharie Risacher</a>.</p><p>The Hawks were able to select the 6-foot-9 French import after surprisingly winning the draft lottery despite entering with just a 3% chance of emerging with the top overall pick.</p><p>While Young admits that Risacher is <a href="https://rg.org/news/basketball/atlanta-hawks-trae-young-on-being-compared-to-steph-curry-and-his-expectations-for-zaccharie-risacher" rel="noopener">“taller” than his listed height</a>, he mentions that the 19-year-old has shown many great traits during their practices together on the Hawks.</p><p>“He’s shown a lot of a little bit of everything,” says Young in a one-on-one interview with ClutchPoints on behalf of his partnership with BodyArmor. “He shot the ball really well in our workouts so far. He’s showing his athleticism, the way he runs out and dunk. He’s shown his defensive ability, he’s even tried to guard me in a few possessions during pickup. He has a lot of upside.”</p><p>Young is going to need the 19-year-old small forward to bring the skills he’s displaying in practice to actual games as the Hawks look to make it back to the playoffs. The 26-year-old guard stresses that his key objective for the 2024-25 season is to make it back to the postseason.</p><p>Although Young missed a career-high 28 games last season, he still <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-trae-young-breaks-silence-being-named-all-star-replacement">made his third All-Star appearance</a> after posting 25.7 points and a career-high 10.8 assists per game. Had Young played the minimum number of games required to qualify for the assists per game crown — 58 games would have been the minimum — he would have been just 0.1 assists per game short of the assists leader, Tyrese Haliburton, who led the NBA with 10.9 dishes per game.</p><p>As Young prepares for his seventh season, he’s been through all of the ups and downs of an NBA veteran. While his play has always been strong since he entered the league in 2018, that hasn’t always been the case for his team. After making a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Finals during the 2020-21 season, Atlanta barely squeaked into the playoffs in the ensuing two seasons before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.</p><p>“The NBA is a roller coaster,” says Young when asked about the biggest thing he’s learned since entering the league. “As much as it’s game by game, it’s year by year too. As much as they’ll love you one year, they’ll change and then you can get right back to it. That’s one thing I ended up learning about the NBA. You just take it day by day, never get too high or too low in any moment or day. Just try to win each and every day.”</p><p>While Young is one of the most talented offensive players in the NBA — he’s also a deadly 3-point shooter, having ranked in the top six in treys made on two different occasions — he also has his flaws like any other star in the league. The Hawks’ veteran guard has led the league in turnovers twice and has ranked in the top three on five occasions.</p><p>That’s also not mentioning Young’s weaknesses on the defensive end, where he holds <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/worst-defensive-rating-point-guards-in-the-nba" rel="noopener">the highest defensive rating</a> (118.0) of any point guard in the league. He posted a career-high 122.0 defensive rating last year.</p><p>Young makes it clear that he’s always looking to get better — and this offseason was no different.</p><p>“Always trying to continue to get better — even at the areas that I’m good at,” says Young. “For me, the routine never really changes. I get in some runs, I play ones with my boys. We get competitive and they all help me. We always get better and I get better throughout the summer. Same routine, nothing really changes much.”</p><p>The dynamic Hawks point guard mentions how he works out five days a week during the offseason, hitting weights for an hour or an hour-and-a-half per day and then spending the same amount of time in the gym playing basketball.</p><p>“I always have to make sure I get my work in, but at the same time, take care of my body — because that’s the engine,” says Young.</p><p>As Young looks to lead the Hawks back to prominence, it obviously won’t be easy in a stacked Eastern Conference. Atlanta will also have to get through the likes of the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat in their own division alone.</p><p>Young once again doubles down on the biggest thing he’s learned and the best advice he’s received since entering the league — always stay even-keeled.</p><p>“Never get too high or too low,” stresses Young. “There’s so many games in the season. Any of my teammates that know me, they can describe me as being passionate and very competitive and they know how hard I am on myself and how much I expect out of myself. There’s some games where you may not have 30 (points) and 10 (assists) or you have a bad shooting night and a single digit score — it’s tough. Having those vets as a young player such as Vince Carter and Rajon Rondo telling me just to never get too high or too low and helping me with those types of things.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Merely qualifying for the playoffs by the skin of their teeth with a rather poor 15-25 record, the Dream’s hopes of mounting a deep playoff run were rather slim from the get-go. Regardless, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/predicting-every-series-2024-wnba-playoffs">Dream aren’t going down without a fight</a>, as they kept Game 2 close against the Liberty before they lost steam in the end in a 91-82 defeat.</p><p>In particular, Rhyne Howard was doing her best to lift the Dream towards a potential upset. She was a warrior out there, playing all 40 minutes of Atlanta’s heartbreaking defeat that sees their season come to an end, and she even captured the attention of another Atlanta sports star, Trae Young. The Hawks star gave Howard <a href="https://x.com/TheTraeYoung/status/1838740565204078944" rel="noopener">her flowers</a> even though they fell short of the ultimate goal.</p><p>“Rhyne Howard y’all🔥🔥 game is nice!” Young wrote on his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.</p><p>Howard finished the game with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks — a well-rounded stat-line — as she did her best in being the Dream’s rock. It was just <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dream-vs-liberty-wnba-playoffs-game-2-prediction-odds-pick-9-24-2024">way too difficult</a> for the Dream to mount much of a challenge for the Liberty in the end. Not only do they have two of the greatest players in WNBA history in Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, they also have the services of one of the best guards in the league in Sabrina Ionescu.</p><p>On Tuesday night, Ionescu carved up the Dream’s defense to the tune of 36 points on 12-23 shooting from the field. When Ionescu’s shot is falling like that, it’s not easy for any team to overcome the Liberty.</p><p>But just like the Hawks, it’s been difficult for the Dream to crack the upper-echelon of playoff teams over the past few years. Trae Young and Rhyne Howard seem to be in a very similar boat, and the Dream may have to follow their NBA counterpart’s lead in embracing the youth in preparation for building a sustainable contending team.</p><h2>Rhyne Howard’s Dream, Trae Young Hawks’ are in a similar boat</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Rhyne-Howard_c2a2f1.jpg"></figure><p>The past few seasons haven’t exactly been smooth-sailing for the Atlanta professional sports teams. Their basketball teams, in particular, have been stuck in a web of mediocrity and they have found it difficult to return to serious contention.</p><p>In 2018, the Dream were still a serious contender. The following year was when their decline began. Declines to their three best players, as well as an injury to Angel McCoughtry, made the 2019 season one straight out of their nightmares. Since then, the Dream have not finished above .500. In fact, their record this year is worse than last year — not exactly a good sign.</p><p>Rhyne Howard was the first overall pick of the 2022 WNBA Draft, and she looks to be the only <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dream-news-allisha-gray-locked-in-game-liberty">long-term keeper the Dream have alongside Allisha Gray</a>. (Former MVP Tina Charles is as solid as ever, but she’s 35 years of age — not exactly a long-term keeper. Their first-round picks in 2023 haven’t panned out yet, although at least they have time on their hands.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/predicting-hawks-record-after-2024-25-season-schedule-release">Trae Young and the Hawks</a> have been on a slow downfall ever since making it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021. They were first-round fodder in 2022 and 2023, and they missed the playoffs entirely in 2024 after falling short in the play-in tournament. But at the very least, they have quality young players at their disposal, which makes their future outlook look promising.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That confidence has more than translated to the NBA level, as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-trae-young-offers-goat-hypothetical-about-himself">Young has turned himself</a> into one of the most dynamic but also polarizing figures in the league as a member <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-hawks-trae-youngs-trade-value">of the Hawks.</a></p><p>Recently, Young was asked to name his all time starting five throughout NBA history during an appearance on the “Million Dollars Worth of Game” podcast, and his choice for point guard should <a href="https://x.com/LegionHoops/status/1833522526867370213" rel="noopener">surprise no one</a>: Trae Young (via Legion Hoops on X, formerly Twitter).</p><p>Joining him in the starting lineup were the late Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant, GOAT contender LeBron James, two time Finals MVP Kevin Durant, and Shaquille O’Neal. Young also named Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan as his sixth man for the squad.</p><p>The Hawks star’s choices are reflective of perhaps the ideal types of players who would be built to compliment his strengths (and offset his weaknesses), as the lineup is filled with lengthy players who can play both ends of the floor and knock down perimeter jumpers in addition to creating their own shots.</p><h2><b>What are the Hawks doing?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Hawks-news-Trae-Young-lists-himself-on-All-Time-NBA-team-1.jpg"><figcaption>David Banks-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Hawks may not have assembled a roster quite as strong as Young’s ideal all-time starting five this summer, but they did at least show an attempt to create a team that is more suited to complement Young than the one they trotted out for the past two years.</p><p>Dejounte Murray, who showed absolutely zero trace of the solid defensive player he was as a member of the San Antonio Spurs and also zero willingness to move without the basketball, was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for a package that at first glance appeared underwhelming but still netted the Hawks their new best defender in shooting guard Dyson Daniels, who figures to be in the starting lineup when the season gets underway.</p><p>Atlanta also drafted French phenom Zaccharie Risacher with the number one overall pick, giving Young another lengthy wing shooter who, at least in theory, can play both ends of the floor and give the Hawks’ lineup some much-needed versatility.</p><p>Atlanta is still clearly far from being a contender in the Eastern Conference, but it was still refreshing for fans to see the front office show at least some semblance of a coherent roster-building vision this offseason.</p><p>That’s how low the bar has dropped.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
